Dasgupta must be replaced with Ratra

Events in the first Test, which the Indians managed todraw after being in danger of following on, have driven home somepoints which the team management would do well to ponder over. One isthat Deep Dasgupta has no place in the side. I have said this beforebut the selectors’ baffling policy of continuing to pick him forces meto repeat myself. Dasgupta is lucky to even be in the squad and it istime he is given the status of a tourist.

The first inescapable conclusion to be drawn from the first Testbetween India and the West Indies is that the series is a contestbetween two mediocre, evenly matched sides, fairly strong in battingbut short in bowling. One serious mistake by either team could wellcost them the series. The first Test at Guyana offered shades of thelast rubber in the Caribbean five years ago and more particularly ofBridgetown where one shocking batting collapse – three hours ofmadness as it was rightly called – cost India the series.Bourda in Georgetown with its inclement weather and batting friendlypitches is not exactly representative of cricketing conditions in theWest Indies. And that is one thing the Indians would do well toremember. The fact that all six matches between the two countriesplayed at this venue over half a century have ended in draws goesagainst the overall record of the Indians in the Caribbean whichboasts of only two victories against 14 losses. It is the faster and bouncier pitches as Bridgetown, Kingston andAntigua that have time and again proved to be the bane of Indian teamsin the past and the encounters at these venues are still ahead. Thecrumb of comfort for the visitors is that at Port of Spain, the venueof the second Test, they have given as good as they have got, registering their only two victories in the West Indies.Events in the first Test, which the Indians managed to draw afterbeing in danger of following on, have driven home some points whichthe team management would do well to ponder over. One is that DeepDasgupta has no place in the side. I have said this before but theselectors’ baffling policy of continuing to pick him forces me torepeat myself. Dasgupta is lucky to even be in the squad and it istime he is given the status of a tourist.Ajay Ratra has waited long enough for his Test cap and he should notbe asked to wait any longer. Sanjay Bangar, an opening bat for RanjiTrophy champions Railways, should be asked to go in first with ShivSundar Das, who proved that while he is not a commanding type ofbatsman, he still remains one whose wicket has to be prised out.The mindless shuffling of Rahul Dravid in the batting order shouldstop forthwith. The gallant warrior has been treated like a yo-yo fortoo long and the No 3 slot should be his by right from now on. WithSachin Tendulkar and Venkatsai Laxman to follow, Sourav Ganguly shouldbe demoted to No 6, at least till he gains in confidence and till hisbatting average starts climbing up to the mid-forties again.Ratra should come in at No 7 and this brings us nicely to the bowlingthat posed the bigger problem at Georgetown. Queries are bound to beraised when the opposition is allowed to recover from 44 for three toa total of 501. Javagal Srinath was a shade fortunate in getting thosethree wickets in his opening spell but there is no doubt that he is askilled bowler who makes the most of his vast experience. On theevidence of the first Test, is Zaheer Khan though the right partnerfor him? The answer must be in the negative and fortunately there is aready replacement in Ashish Nehra. The spin bowling, traditionally Indian cricket’s strength, was thecause of a bigger worry. That there is a day-and-night differencebetween the home and away record of Anil Kumble is painfully wellknown. But even going by this record, that has him averaging a littleover 21 at home and around 40 away, the bowling of this experiencedcampaigner was a major disappointment. It is amazing how the country’sNo 1 strike bowler in the last decade with over 300 wickets in the bagis not able to improve on his record abroad. But he keeps his place onreputation if not on form and it can only he hoped that the return ofHarbhjan Singh will inspire Kumble to bowl better. The off-spinner will have, no doubt, recovered from the injury thatkept him out of the first Test and he should take the place ofSarandeep Singh, who seemed quite overawed at being thrust all toosuddenly into the thick of the action, though it must be said that hisbatting came as an unexpected bonus. Unfortunately, Sarandeep’sprimary role is that of a bowler and not that of a batsman. The home team too could not have been totally satisfied with theshowing at Bourda. The batting obviously hinges too much on BrianLara, Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with Ramnaresh Sarwandisplaying the promise of a couple of valuable knocks. For them too,the main worry is the bowling, but then it was always on the cardsthat their current pace trio would find it tough to bowl out theformidable Indian batting line up even once, let alone twice. There were spells when Adam Sanford, Mervyn Dillon and Cameron Cuffywere hostile or when Nagamatoo needed watching. But this is not aquartet that the Indian batsmen would worry too much about. That said,of course, the bowlers were not helped by Hooper’s overcautiousapproach that was quite puzzling given the fact that he had a total of501 behind him.Speaking of defensive tactics, Ganguly too was guilty of this. Thecaptains adopting a 7-2 or 8-1 off side field ruined the game as aspectacle. If there was need for legislation to curb such restrictiveor negative fields on the leg side, should there not be similar actiontaken to come down on such obnoxious tactics in the ostensible nameof strategy – on the other side of the field?

Pochettino return would split Spurs players

Former Leeds United midfielder David Norris believes that the Tottenham camp will be split should Mauricio Pochettino return to the club.

There have been whispers about the Argentine making a sensational return to Spurs in recent days, with a report from The Athletic suggesting that the two parties are currently in talks.

Pochettino was only sacked and then replaced by Jose Mourinho 18 months ago but has struggled to make an impact during his short spell with PSG, despite winning two domestic French trophies, and would be open to coming back to north London.

The Argentine did reach the Champions League semi finals and only lost out on winning the Ligue 1 title on the final day of the campaign, but is reportedly unhappy in Paris.

Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen have both departed, but the current Tottenham squad remains almost identical to the one that Pochettino left, albeit with a few additions in the shape of Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Rodon and Matt Doherty.

Pochettino returning would be a major boost to the likes of Harry Winks and Dele Alli, who lost their way under Jose Mourinho.

But Norris exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that not everyone in the squad would be left happy should he get reappointed:

“I think he’s going to have a relationship with certain players he’s closer to – Alli did well for periods under him.

“Certain players will be happy with that and probably disappointed he left. There will be others that he might not be close to that won’t be looking forward to him coming back.

“It’s an interesting one with him having not been gone that long, so it will be interesting how that one plays out.”

SPCL 1 – A Burridge test of character for BAT

BAT Sports face a test of character as they bid to reboot their ECB Southern Electric Premier League leadership challenge against Burridge at Botley Road, 1pm

Mike Vimpany17-May-2002BAT Sports face a test of character as they bid to reboot their ECB Southern Electric Premier League leadership challenge against Burridge at Botley Road, 1pm.Last season’s champions suffered their first defeat in 12 attempts, losing by 12 runs to Havant last week.”Now we must pick up the pieces and start again,” says BAT skipper Dave Banks.Havant, whose two wins from two games start is shared by Andover, face off-colour Bashley (Rydal), who have lost both of their openers.Andover have an intriguing visit to Liphook & Ripsley, who beat Bashley last weekend.”We didn’t play anywhere near our potential against Havant and there’s a lot of room for improvement, particularly in the bowling department,” Banks stressed. “The extras we conceded against Havant had a major effect on the outcome.”BAT are expected to take an unchanged side to Burridge, where they won by ten wickets late last season.Burridge, who have won their only game so far against Portsmouth, have a major doubt over opener Paul Hawkins, who may be operating his revolutionary ‘Hawkie’ cricket ball tracking system at the Lord’s Test.Andover have made a flying start by beating South Wilts and Calmore Sports. But new skipper Roger Miller will be cautious at Liphook, particularly after their East Hampshire side hosts won at Bashley last week.”That was a fair win,” said Miller. “But it’s how we play that counts – and we’ve played pretty well so far.”Havant are forced to make a number of changes for Bashley’s visit. MCC Young Professional Stephen Snell is on covers duty at the Sri Lanka Test match, so skipper Dominic Carson dons the gloves.Richard Lewis comes in to boost the pace attack, which is weakened by the absence of Mackie Hobson and Bevis Moynhan, both all-rounders.Bashey, still shell shocked after two straight defeats, prefer Ross Grierson’s spin to the medium-pace of hamstring-troubled John Whiting. The Foresters need a big innings from Western Australian prodigy Luke Ronchi if they are to dent Havant’s bright start. It will be an emotional day for former Calmore Sports all-rounder Paul Draper, who returns to play for his new club South Wilts at Loperwood Park.”Drapes is sure of a good reception. He did a magnificent amount of good work here,” said in-form Calmore all-rounder James Hibberd.”But he won’t be getting one run off the mark – and I, for one, am aiming to bowl him out.”Draper spent his entire career at Calmore prior to switching to South Wilts, whose captain Russell Rowe is again bang in form, having hit a match-winning century at Bournemouth last week.Mark Boston returns for Calmore Sports, who are at full strength for the first time this season.Newly promoted Portsmouth are hit by unavailabity at Bournemouth, where former Hampshire all-rounder Lee Savident and opener Geoff Pike will be two significant absentees.Raj Maru’s side have lost both their opening matchesto Havant and Burridge – and will do well to win at Chapel Gate, even though Richard Scott is absent from the Bournemouth team. Alex Allum comes in.

Sheffield United holding firm on Berge

Sheffield United will not be forced into selling Sander Berge for a reduced price this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Sheffield Star, who claimed that the Blades will demand a fee of around £35m in order to part with the defensive midfielder in the upcoming transfer window, despite suffering relegation to the Championship this season.

The report added that Arsenal are thought to be monitoring the Norway international’s situation ahead of a potential move in the coming months, but, Sheffield United’s firm stance over the 23-year-old’s valuation could deter Mikel Arteta’s side from making a move.

Fans will be buzzing

While Berge – whom Chris Wilder dubbed an “outstanding” player – was by no means in the best form of his life this season, something which was most probably a result of spending a long spell on the sidelines due to injury, that the Blades appear to be standing strong over the midfielder’s potential sale this summer is likely to have fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, after joining Sheffield United from Genk in a £19.8m deal back in January of 2020, Berge impressed over his 14 Premier League appearances in the club’s 2019/20 campaign, scoring one goal, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to averaging 0.7 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and winning 5.5 duels per game – with these metrics culminating in a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.90.

As such, if Berge can rediscover such form for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side in their Championship campaign next season, it should considerably boost the Blades’ chances of making an immediate return to the Premier League under their new manager.

With the £16.2m-rated man’s asking price appearing likely to deter a number of clubs from making a move for the £38,000-per-week 23-year-old this summer, which subsequently increases the chances of him remaining at Bramall Lane ahead of next season, this would appear to be very good news indeed for both Jokanovic and fans of the club.

Somerset patron delighted with Sri Lanka match

It was fitting that Somerset was chosen to host Sri Lanka’s first warm-up match prior to the upcoming one-day tournament between England, Sri Lanka and India

John Collis23-Jun-2002It was fitting that Somerset was chosen to host Sri Lanka’s first warm-up match prior to the upcoming one-day tournament between England, Sri Lanka and India. The county’s chief benefactor is Sri-Lankan born Chris Ondaatje, retired financier and author, whose generosity and devotion to the West Country club has helped establish their thriving School of Excellence, housed beneath the Ondaajte Pavilion. This academy has been granted regional status by the England and Wales Cricket Board, and makes Somerset County Cricket Club responsible for the development of cricket throughout the South-West region.

Mr Ondaatje has sponsored the clash between Somerset and their visitors, which was dubbed The Patron’s Salver Challenge Match. Before the game an engraved silver salver and three silver goblets were presented to Sri Lanka team manager Chandra Schaffter, and a similar presentation was made to Somerset President Michael Hill. The Somerset silverware will be housed permanently in the Somerset Cricket Museum, housed in an award-winning restored medieval barn behind the ground.Mr Ondaatje said: `It is really fantastic to be here on this wonderful day and to have had the opportunity to sponsor this first Patron’s Trophy match between Sri Lanka and Somerset. I am certain that this will mark the start of a thrilling one-day series in England.’After an excellent day’s cricket, with the threatened rain thankfully staying away, Somerset beat Sri Lanka by 63 runs.

Celtic close in on Ange Postecoglou

Celtic have agreed a compensation fee with Yokohama F Marinos for their manager Ange Postecoglou.

What’s the story?

The Premiership giants have applied for an exemption with UEFA for the 55-year-old tactician to be allowed to take a job in Europe. Postecoglou doesn’t currently hold the required UEFA Pro Licence, but it’s possible to apply for a “recognition of competence procedure” to bypass the issue.

According to Sky Sports, the Hoops are confident that the former Australia national team manager’s extensive career at club and international level will see him granted an exemption and have reportedly agreed a compensation fee with the Japanese club to pave the way for his move to Parkhead.

“Mr Postecoglou does not currently hold the UEFA Pro Licence,” said a UEFA spokesperson.

“A recognition of competence procedure has been initiated. The process could take several weeks. We don’t have any further information to provide at this stage.”

Fans will be buzzing

Celtic have been without a permanent manager since Neil Lennon resigned back in February following a horrendous run of form. The Glasgow side were hoping to win a record-breaking 10th league title in a row last season, but an awful campaign saw them finish 25 points behind fierce rivals Rangers.

Several first team stars are expected to depart Parkhead over the coming months, with the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Kristoffer Ajer approaching the final 12 months of their current contracts and linked with moves away, meaning a major squad rebuild could be needed over the summer.

It’s a daunting task for Postecoglou, although his 25 years of managerial experience should stand him in good stead.

The proposed appointment of the 55-year-old came as somewhat of a shock after many household names were originally linked with succeeding Lennon, including Rafael Benitez, Roy Keane and Roberto Martinez.

Eddie Howe came closest to filling the vacant hot seat before talks collapsed, and although Postecoglou’s arrival may not please some supporters, many will surely be happy to see a new manager finally installed as Celtic aim to wrestle back their Premiership crown.

Derby rival Ipswich for Crooks

A major update has emerged on £1.9k-p/w ace Matt Crooks, it could lead to Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton facing a disaster in the transfer window.

What’s the talk?

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Championship side Derby County are seriously interested in a swoop for Rotherham attacking midfielder Matt Crooks this summer. Wayne Rooney has identified Crooks as a target as he looks to rebuild his Derby squad and as such, he could sanction a bid for the Englishman soon.

The report claims that Ipswich are also looking at Crooks as a potential target. Ipswich are attempting to build a squad capable of securing promotion from League One and Paul Cook believes that Crooks could improve his current team.

Earlier this year, Crooks won the Championship Player of the Month award and pundit Don Goodman claimed that he was “flourishing” at a higher level. He told the Rotherham Advertiser:

“Crooks might not be the most well-known player in the Championship but there’s simply no doubting his effectiveness. Having made his way from the lower leagues, he is now flourishing at a higher level.

“There are fewer better sights in football than an attacking midfielder charging through on his way to scoring. Crooks made a habit of this in January.”

Fans will be gutted

Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton could be facing a disaster with this update. Derby joining the race for Crooks could be a massive blow to the Blues by dampening their chances of being able to land the forward.

This news should be gutting to Ipswich fans, as they could be about to miss out on a talented player who could be an excellent addition to their squad. Ashton would then need to scour the market in search of alternative targets, which could slow down their recruitment process.

Derby are in the Championship and this means that they can offer Crooks an immediate return to the second tier. Ipswich, meanwhile, can only offer him League One football and the prospect of a promotion push. Derby also have Rooney in charge and that could be a draw for English players due to his legendary status in this country, being the top-scorer in the national team’s history. This means that Derby could be a more attractive proposition for Crooks, which is why this news could leave Ashton facing disaster as he looks to secure such a good player.

The £1.9k-per-week ace produced seven goals and three assists in all competitions for a struggling Rotherham side in the season just gone. Crooks averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.75 in 12 starts as an attacking midfielder as Rotherham were relegated from the Championship, which shows that he is a solid performer at that level and that he could have been influential at a step down in League One. Therefore, Ipswich fans will be gutted if they miss out on him due to Derby’s interest.

Leicestershire fight back at Grace Road

From a position of difficulty at the end of the second day, Leicestershire fought back to finish the third day with a slight edge over Hampshire at Grace Road.

Vic Isaacs12-Jul-2002From a position of difficulty at the end of the second day, Leicestershire fought back to finish the third day with a slight edge over Hampshire at Grace Road.Michael Bevan and Neil Burns held the Hampshire bowlers at bay, after a throw by John Francis just failed to run out the Aussie star in the second over of the day. The pair batted through to lunch, upping the abysmal scoring rate of the previous day. After posting the century partnership Bevan received a superb ball from Chris Tremlett, but this only brought in the veteran Philip deFreitas and with his new partner began to play the now tired Hampshire attack to all parts.Burns reached a creditable century with his 13th boundary, but on his dismissal to a slip catch off Mullally, the innings folded, and on reaching 300 with two tail enders at the crease, stand in captain Ian Sutcliffe declared 11 runs behind. Will Kendall received a corker from deFreitas, and was soon followed by John Crawley for a rare duck, as Hampshire began their 2nd Innings badly. After some fine strokes particularly off his legs, Giles White was given out lbw, giving deFreitas 3 early wickets.Robin Smith and Neil Johnson rallied and shared a half century stand, but with rain falling Johnson was adjudged to have been caught by the wicket-keeper down the leg side off Crowe, a decision that was treated with dismay, especially as the teams then followed the disgruntled batsman off the field for the same shower of rain. After a 20 minute stoppage, Smith and John Francis survived with any further scare to leave Hampshire 113 ahead with 6 wickets in hand.

Everton eye Marcelo swoop

Everton are closing in on the appointment of Nuno Santo as their new manager and with that in mind, they can finally begin thinking about recruitment.

The Toffees’ plans were thrown into disarray after Carlo Ancelotti left the club so a new list of targets may well have to be drafted in order to suit the incoming manager.

What’s the word?

According to The Mirror, Everton are locked in a battle to sign Real Madrid’s Marcelo.

The Brazilian’s contract expires in the summer of 2022 so could be available at a cut-price over the next few months.

The defender’s asking price is around the £5m mark with Leeds thought to be interested in the Madrid legend as well.

That being said, it’s the Toffees who are believed to be in pole position to sign Marcelo.

A massive coup

The left-back is now 33 years of age but there is no denying the incredible accomplishments of his career and indeed his talent.

Marcelo is a genuine legend at Real Madrid and has racked up over 500 appearances for the Spanish giants.

In the process, he’s won an impressive haul of trophies; including five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues. Clearly, luring him to Goodison Park would be a massive coup.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-and-transfer-news-ancelotti-moshiri-fonseca-howe-moyes” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

A flair player, the 58-cap Brazil international is not only a ruthless tackler but he’s also a rampant force when he goes forward.

He won 1.6 tackles per game in La Liga this term while he produced 2.5 challenges per match. Capable of beating players for fun, at his peak Marcelo completed 2.6 successful dribbles an outing.

Given his age, the defender would be a fantastic mentor for Lucas Digne and would be able to step in reliably for the Frenchman should he require resting or be injured.

He would also arrive in Merseyside with a high dose of praise from a certain Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian commented in 2014: “Since the World Cup, Marcelo has been the best full-back in the world without a doubt.”

A canny operator, this would be a sign of the ambition Everton have. They want to get back in the Champions League and by adding characters like him to their squad, they will have a greater chance.

AND in other news, Everton add “exceptional” 57 y/o to manager shortlist, he’s better than Nuno Santo…
