The Abu Dhabi Cricket Council has offered to step in as host for Pakistan’s home series against India scheduled early next year, if concerns over security in Pakistan persisted. Dilawar Mani, the council’s chief executive, said the council was ready to stage the matches if the situation arose. His statement comes in the wake of the Indian Government recently calling off its five-match junior hockey series away to Pakistan at the eleventh hour citing security concerns. The 2008 Champions Trophy originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan this September, was also deferred to September-October 2009 after a number of participating teams refused to visit the country due to similar reasons.”If Pakistan is not able to host the Indians for some reasons at home we would be willing to stage the matches free of cost,” Mani told Pakistan news channel .PCB CEO Saleem Altaf confirmed the offer from Abu Dhabi but was more in favour of holding the series at home. Pakistan’s chances of hosting the postponed Champions Trophy next year will be in jeopardy if India refuse to tour in January.”The ICC has kept the Indian tour to Pakistan as a benchmark for deciding on the relocation of the Champions Trophy because of the security situation in the country,” Altaf said. A neutral venue, Altaf said, will be the worst-case scenario. “When there is no other option available, we will switch over a home series to a neutral venue. To earn sufficient income through an alternative venue the PCB will discuss venues like Abu Dhabi, England or Sharjah. The venue which gives more money to the PCB will be selected.”However Altaf said security arrangements for India’s tour were already underway in Pakistan. “The publishing of [match] tickets is also set to start. Today, the PCB also received an email from the ICC President David Morgan asking to make arrangements for his visa as he is willing to watch the first [Pakistan-India] Test.”Our first priority remains to convince India and other foreign teams to fulfil their obligation of touring Pakistan and supporting Pakistan cricket. The Pakistan board as a policy wants teams to tour Pakistan but at same time needs to generate funds and can’t afford to become an isolated cricket nation,” he saidIndia are scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international on the tour beginning January 6. However, Mani did not specify whether the council will be willing to host both the Tests and one-dayers.Mani also mentioned Dubai and Sharjah, apart from Abu Dhabi, as alternative venues for the series as they have grounds that match up to international standards. “The Dubai Sports City ground is also ready to be launched soon, so we have three venues right now,” he said. While the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi is currently playing host to the three-match ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies, the last match at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium was a one-dayer between Pakistan and Zimbabwe back in April 2003.

O'Brien's 'best day' of cricket

Iain O’Brien said he enjoyed watching Tim McIntosh and Daniel Flynn occupy vital time at the crease and consolidate New Zealand’s position after his career-best figures of 6 for 75 had kept West Indies to 305

Iain O’Brien said his ‘best day’ of cricket was perfectly rounded off by Tim McIntosh and Daniel Flynn’s occupation of the crease, consolidating New Zealand’s position after his career-best figures of 6 for 75 had kept West Indies to 305.New Zealand’s batting has been erratic of late, but O’Brien was delighted with the century stand between McIntosh, who ended the day unbeaten on 62, and Flynn (57). “To watch two guys play Test cricket, to watch two guys play genuine, proper, Test cricket, I really enjoy that stuff. There was nothing flashy, everything was just solid, it was good to watch.”O’Brien said the benefit of rest for bowlers was “huge”. “In South Africa last year we had only three hours off the park in one of the Test matches. That’s just not long enough.”We’ve had most of today off and we’ll sleep on it overnight and have most of tomorrow off as well. There’s nothing better than time off the park to recharge the batteries. If you go back out there straight away and you’re still fatigued, things start happening that are not the the right things and that’s how you get injuries as well.”New Zealand coach Andy Moles was also pleased with his two batsmen. “Those two set a base that our middle and lower order should be able to launch from,” Moles said. “There job is not finished yet as [McIntosh] needs to push on to a bigger score but he is well on the journey.”McIntosh, in his second Test, has shown the mental approach needed for this position and was starting to flourish towards the end of the day, while Flynn continued to impress in the way he is handling the all-important No. 3 role.”O’Brien was chuffed with his bowling after being in a “dark place” following the first Test in Dunedin. “That’s as consistent as I’ve ever been out in the middle, pace-wise as well. And to hit areas I was wanting, it was pretty rewarding, pretty pleasing to do that.”I spent a bit of time in a dark place after Dunedin and looked back to when I bowled well. I remembered bowling to Michael Clarke in Australia and thinking ‘this is going well’, so I went back into the nets to explore that and I found one thing I wasn’t doing in Dunedin and brought that back into my action.”O’Brien felt he had to keep performing to hold his place in the side, with players like Chris Martin on the sidelines. “The demons are always there and you’re only one, two or three bad spells away [from being dropped].”

Celtic: Romano shares Edouard update

Fabrizio Romano has insisted that Crystal Palace are yet to make a bid for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

The Lowdown: Romano on the ball with Celtic

The transfer expert has been an in-the-know source when it comes to a number of the Hoops’ moves this summer.

He shared numerous updates in the club’s pursuits of Carl Starfelt and Joe Hart, while also posting about Celtic’s interest in right-backs Brandon Soppy and Aurelio Buta.

Romano was one of the first to reveal details of Edouard’s proposed move to Leicester City falling through earlier in the window and has now shared another update on the Frenchman.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-12/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Edouard post

Edouard has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace in recent days, with one reporter believing that Selhurst Park is the most likely destination in a potential £15m deal.

Romano, who has 4.3 million Twitter followers, was asked by a Palace fan for an update on any transfer late on Saturday evening, to which he responded at 9:39pm on Saturday night: “Fake. No bid from Crystal Palace for Edouard as of now.”

As Romano’s reply was directly to a Palace fan, it appeared to go under the radar, with fewer than 200 likes as of Sunday lunchtime.

The Verdict: A busy 10 days ahead

With the transfer window shutting in nine days’ time, it could well be a busy period for Dominic McKay and co at Parkhead.

The Hoops have already made eight signings this summer, but with Edouard’s contract up in less than 12 months, they could be keen to cash in on him now, providing they add a forward to their ranks.

Thomas Henry, Georgios Giakoumakis and Kevin Nisbet have all been linked in recent weeks, so if Celtic get one of those through the door, they may well look to grant Edouard his wish and sell.

Of course, a club would need to be open to striking a deal with Celtic for the 23-year-old, and as of now, that isn’t Palace.

Cristian Romero: Spurs get injury boost

Tottenham Hotspur have received a huge injury boost ahead of their two games this week…

What’s the latest?

Nuno Santo and his side need to overturn a one-goal deficit against Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday evening to keep their European hopes alive, whilst they face newly-promoted Watford in the Premier League on Sunday in a bid to maintain their 100% start.

And the Portuguese head coach has been handed some encouragement after one of his injured stars made a return to training this week.

Cristian Romero made his debut from the bench in Spurs’ opening day clash against Manchester City and played the full 90 minutes against in Portugal last Thursday, but was not in the matchday squad for the win over Wolves at the weekend.

The 23-year-old, signed from Atalanta this summer, was pictured in first-team training, via football.london reporter Alasdair Gold.

Big boost

Spurs were stunned last week as they were defeated 1-0 against Pacos in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League clash and must win to remain in the competition later this week.

Not only will the encounter hand Romero more valuable minutes but it’ll give Nuno another chance to take a look at his new summer signing, who has undoubtedly been brought in with the intentions to become the first-choice.

The current partnership of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier may have kept impressive clean sheets against the defending Premier League champions and Wolves but they were two members of last season’s problematic backline.

Spurs conceded more goals than any of the other ‘big six’ in 2020/21 and that was largely due to individual errors and a lack of cohesion, in which the aforementioned duo played a major part.

Romero, who won Serie A’s ‘Defender of the Year’ award last term, was surely brought in to fix that but he needs game time after an injury in the Copa America saw his start to training initially delayed.

The Argentina international also led the league for interceptions (3.1 per game), which goes to show his intelligence and ability to read the game, and perhaps, suggests he’s far less error-prone.

Having him available for the clash against Pacos on Thursday and Watford on Sunday should leave Nuno absolutely delighted.

Big wins for SNGPL and Abbottabad

A round-up of the third day of the seventh round Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches

Group ASui Southern Gas Corporation collapsed to a massive innings defeat against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines in Sheikhpura. Misbah-ul-Haq failed to add to his overnight score of 247, but his team had stamped its authority over the match as a win looked imminent at the end of the second day. SNGPL declared on 494 for 6 – a lead of 361 – and bowled out SSGC for a paltry 160, crushing any hopes they may have had of making the opposition bat again. SSGC struggled from the outset, losing their first wicket for no score, and although Asif Zakir and Imran Abbas added 52 for the second wicket, there was little show of support from the rest. Only wicketkeeper Ahmed Zeeshan resisted with 52, but legspinner Yasir Shah – 3 for 63 – and fast bowler Imran Ali, who took 2 for 44, hastened the slide to conclude a resounding win for SNGPL.Salman Butt’s aggressive 202, and Mohammad Talha’s four-wicket burst put National Bank of Pakistan in a commanding position against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the Gaddafi Stadium. Butt consolidated his team’s dominance, scoring at a strike rate of almost 90 to put the match completely out of ZTBL’s reach as NBP declared on 358 for 6, setting an improbable target of 437. ZTBL’s task was made even more difficult as fast bowler Mohammad Talha had them reeling at 12 for 3. Wahab Riaz then dismissed Aamer Bashir with the score on 49 before Talha broke a 38-run fourth-wicket partnership between Umar Javed – who remained unbeaten on 29 – and wicketkeeper Shakeel Ansar, leaving ZTBL at 87 for 5 and staring at a massive defeat.Yasir Hussain, the offspinner, took 7 for 91 to help Pakistan Customs bowl out Lahore Shalimar for 360, limiting their first innings lead to 35. Mohammad Hussain then made an important, unbeaten half-century to take Pakistan Customs to 167 for 3 at stumps – a lead of 132 – and provide them a slight advantage at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Overnight batsmen Abid Ali, who made 114, and Raza Ali Dar added 116 for the fourth wicket to take Lahore Shalimar to a comfortable position at 288 for 3. But the Pakistan Customs bowlers then triggered a collapse, taking the remaining seven wickets for just 52 runs as the batsmen who followed failed to resist. In their second innings, Pakistan Customs lost each of the three wickets after their batsmen had got starts, but Hussain and Zahoor Elahi added an unbeaten 65 for the fourth wicket, scoring at a healthy rate, to hand their team the edge.Sohail Tanvir took 7 for 120 – and 15 wickets in the match – to set up what should be a comfortable win for Khan Research Laboratories against Pakistan International Airlines in Mirpur. A 72-run third-wicket partnership between Khurram Manzoor and Fahad Iqbal had helped PIA recover to 118 for 3. However, frequent breakthroughs from Tanvir and fast bowler Yasir Ali pegged them back, and although the last two wickets added 56 to take them to 248, a target of 127 has proved a touch too little to seriously test the KRL batsmen. KRL ended the day on 73 for 2 – just 54 runs short of victory – after openers Saeed Anwar jnr and Bazid Khan gave them a brisk start.Water and Power Development Authority’s hopes rest entirely on Bilal Khilji – unbeaten on 41 – as they struggled to 99 for 7 against Karachi Whites in pursuit of 170 for victory at the National Stadium. Karachi Whites recovered to 262 after finding themselves in a much precarious situation at 102 for 5. Fast bowler Azharullah took 4 for 83 to give his team a shot at chasing a much lower target but a lower-order resistance, led by Karachi Whites’ captain Khalid Latif, who made 81, provided his team a fighting chance of pulling off an unlikely win. The last three Karachi Whites wickets yielded 114 runs that could prove decisive in the outcome. In response, the WAPDA batsmen faltered from the outset, collapsing to the pace of Tanvir Ahmed and Malik Aftab – who took three wickets each – to find themselves reeling at 73 for 7. Khilji held firm amid wickets falling at the other end, and took his team to win 71 runs of the target with Azharullah batting on 11.Group BNoor-ul-Amin and Akmal Khan – both spinners – took seven wickets between them to help Abbottabad defeat Quetta comprehensively by ten wickets in Islamabad. Quetta began the third day 84 runs adrift of Abbottabad’s first innings lead of 91, and did well at the start as openers Shahzad Tareen and Taimur Ali added 66. Their partnership marked the only highlight for Quetta as they were bowled out for 173, with Noor-ul-Amin following up his impressive display in the first innings with 4 for 56 in the second. The highest subsequent stand was worth just 22 as Akmal Khan ably supported his fellow spinner, capturing three middle-order wickets. Set a target of 83, the Abbottabad openers Hammad Ali and Fahad Khan raced to a victory, taking just ten overs to complete the job.Three wickets within a space of 30 runs put Islamabad on top against Hyderabad, who were set a daunting target of 418 at the Niaz Stadium. Islamabad were 113 for 2 overnight – after gaining a lead of 85 in the first innings – and consolidated their dominant position despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Fast bowler Lal Kumar took 4 for 83, and was well supported by offspinner Shoaib Laghari – who took 3 for 77 – as Hyderabad limited the opposition to 206 for 7 at one stage. But an unbeaten eighth-wicket stand of 123 between Rauf Akbar, who top-scored with 77, and half-centurion Imad Wasim put the game firmly in Islamabad’s grasp. Hyderabad faltered in their run-chase, losing opener Aqeel Anjum for 43, before Saad Altaf took two wickets to leave them staring at a possible defeat.Centuries from Usman Tariq and Naved Yasin put Multan firmly in control against Peshwar at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The two were involved in a mammoth 283-run partnership for the fourth wicket, and although their team lost five wickets for 73 runs, the lower-order batted well with wicketkeeper Gulraiz Sadaf to stretch their team’s lead to 110. Afaq Ahmed was Peshawar’s top performer with 3 for 92. However, his team struggled in the second innings, losing opener Israrullah, caught off Ansar Javed, with the score on 2, and Mohammad Idress, bowled by Abdur Rauf, on 29. Naved Khan made an unbeaten 20, and with his team still 69 runs short of overhauling the lead, Peshwar’s hopes for a recovery will rest on him.At the Khan Research Laboratory Ground, Rawalpindi ended a tough, yet satisfactory day against Karachi Blues, limiting them to 297 for 6 after enforcing the follow-on. Karachi Blues, who began 155 short, were given an excellent start by openers Atif Ali and Shahzaib Hasan, who top-scored with 95. However, frequent breakthroughs following their separation undermined their 129-run stand as the middle-order batsmen, with the exception of Sheharyar Ghani who made 74, failed to build on starts. Fast bowlers Mohammad Rameez and Mohammad Ayaz took two wickets each to prevent any threatening partnership from taking root and helping their team retain the advantage with Karachi Blues 142 ahead and six down.A 93-run sixth-wicket stand between Ayaz Tassawar, who top-scored with 93, and Nadeem Javed, coupled with useful contributions from the lower order, helped Sialkot seize the initiative against Lahore Ravi at the Jinnah Stadium. The day began with both teams on an even keel but Tassawar’s innings, and a further 115 runs for the last four Sialkot wickets, including an unbeaten 41 by wicketkeeper Kaleem Ahmed, helped their team gain a crucial 98-run first innings lead. Sohail Ahmed, who bowls left-arm spin, starred with the ball, taking 4 for 67. In their second innings, Lahore Ravi started well with openers Sohail and Babar Manzoor adding 52, but a timely the latter’s timely wicket at the death provided a satisfying end to the day for Sialkot.

Midlands journo drops major Cantwell to Villa claim

Midlands journalist Luke Hatfield can understand why Norwich City have slapped a £40m asking price on Todd Cantwell amid interest from Aston Villa.

Villa have been linked with another raid on Norwich after previously signing Emiliano Buendia from the club.

Cantwell is reportedly seen as a potential replacement for Jack Grealish, who has become the most expensive player in British history by moving to Manchester City for a fee of £100m.

Cantwell enjoyed a superb season in the Championship last term as Norwich won promotion back to the Premier League.

He made 34 appearances in all competitions and scored six goals, while also registering eight assists.

In the top-flight, he has yet to score or register an assist, which could be partly down to the opposition they have faced, having played both Liverpool and Manchester City.

Hatfield does not think that such a fee is overpriced, especially if Villa are willing to pay up, although he has doubts over whether he will end up joining Dean Smith’s side.

He said: “Is it overpriced? I suppose the price or the value for a player is whatever a club is really willing to pay for him.

“But for someone of Todd Cantwell’s quality and potential already, you can understand why Norwich are asking for £40 million.

“I don’t see him going to Villa this summer.”

Phil Hay drops Leeds United transfer claim

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered some insight into why Leeds United opted against signing Club Brugge starlet Noa Lang in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Telegraph had claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been been watching the 21-year-old ahead of a potential move, before Sport/Voetbalmagazine (via Sport Witness) revealed that the Whites remained interested in signing Lang before deadline day.

But, in the end, the Yorkshire club decided to land Dan James from Manchester United, and Hay has now revealed why despite Victor Orta’s liking of Lang, Bielsa himself wasn’t too keen on him.

He said: “People will have seen Noa Lang linked all the way through the window, and the reality with Lang is that (Victor) Orta thinks a lot of him, and Orta thinks he could be very good value and he tends to have a good eye for a player – particularly a prospect – and he felt that that was worth investigating, worth setting up potentially for Bielsa to sign if Bielsa liked him.

“There were things about Lang’s game that Bielsa wasn’t totally sold on – he wasn’t saying that Lang in any way was a poor player, but I think defensively and tracking back wasn’t quite right, and you know that that matters to Bielsa.”

Mistake from Bielsa?

Able to play anywhere across the frontline, Lang showed he has a real eye for goal in his loan spell at Brugge last season, bagging 17 goals and providing a further 11 assists in just 37 games, including netting in the Champions League.

With the volume of goals and assists that Lang delivered last season, and with him still being very much in the infancy of his career, a move for the youngster would surely have been the kind of exciting one that would have had fans buzzing, not just this season, but in the years to come too.

The £19.8m-rated Lang looks to be the kind of player who makes a real impact in the final third and is someone who produces a genuine end product, rather than just flashes of promise.

Given that he only recently turned 22, Lang could have been the kind of long-term project who thrived under Bielsa and blossomed into a real star at both club and international level.

Compare that to James, who despite playing 74 games for United, has only managed to score nine goals and provide another nine assists. That is a measly record for someone who plays in a very offensive role for a side as good as the Red Devils, and while some of those appearances of course were off the bench, his end product and consistency is something that is very lacking.

Given his Premier League experience, Bielsa went with the more known quantity in James, and while that may be the safer option, it may not be the right one.

Lang looks to just have a higher ceiling than James, and this is a moment where Bielsa could have just taken a little bit of a gamble and gone with the more exciting player to see if he could have worked his magic to iron out the issues that he supposedly wasn’t a fan of.

Meanwhile, this Leeds ace has seen his market value decrease dramatically…

Former captains back Younis appointment

Former Pakistan captains have hailed the PCB’s decision to appoint Younis Khan as captain after a string of disappointing results under Shoaib Malik

Former Pakistan captains have hailed the PCB’s decision to appoint Younis Khan as captain after a string of disappointing results under Shoaib Malik.Malik was replaced as captain on Tuesday, two days after Pakistan’s embarrassing 234-run loss to Sri Lanka in Lahore, which resulted in a 2-1 defeat in the three-ODI series. Imran Khan, one of Pakistan’s greatest captains, welcomed the move to put Younis in charge.”Younis has one big advantage over others in that he is the best batsman in the team and is respected by fellow players because he gives his best and can demand the same from others,” Imran told .Inzamam-ul-Haq, whom Malik succeeded as captain, said his successor had failed to live up to expectations. “Malik failed to handle the players in the team,” he said. “A good captain is not about winning and losing, it’s also proper handling of the players.”I hope Younis leads the team for a longer period because frequent changes are not good for the team. Younis must perform well, as he has done, so that he can command respect and can ask others to perform well.”Zaheer Abbas is hoping the change at the top brings about a change in the team’s fortunes as well. “We didn’t have desirable results under Malik,” he said. “At times, a change at the top changes luck and we can only hope that the team produces good results under Younis.”Younis himself has said all of the players will need to “wave their magic wands”, a sentiment echoed by Abbas. “Not just the captain, but the other ten players in the team need to show their best so it looks like a unit.”Another former captain, Ramiz Raja, believed it would be a testing time for Pakistan cricket, but felt Younis, who had rejected captaincy offers in the past, would show more respect to the position.Yawar Saeed, who was involved as Pakistan’s team manager in the decision to appoint Younis captain, said: “It wasn’t easy taking the decision but we had to better the team. I hope Malik emerges stronger from this and does his best for the team in future.”

Pukki has become a menace since leaving Celtic

If you look down the squad list of a club in the English top-flight, it’s more than likely that you’d find a player who plied their trade at Parkhead and donned the famous Celtic shirt.

A plethora of the Bhoys’ top talents have walked out on the club in search of better pay and a higher standard of football.

You only need to look at the recent transfer window, where Celtic lost Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie to south of the border. They even lost one of their finest academy players to England in Leo Hjelde.

Virgil van Dijk is the most famous example from years gone by, while Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong and Fraser Forster have all forged good careers elsewhere. However, one player who didn’t set the world alight in Glasgow has also been incredibly successful in England.

That happens to be Teemu Pukki. The Finnish striker didn’t impress hugely during his time at Celtic, scoring just nine times in 38 appearances.

That tally might not be in the same measly ballpark as Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala, but you can see why Ronny Deila decided to let him go in 2015.

However, on reflection, both the manager and fans alike will be happy to admit that it was a mistake to let him depart.

Deila himself revealed his regrets in 2019 over selling Pukki, saying: “He played my first matches at Celtic, but it seemed like the club was a little too big for him at the time. It may have been a mistake [letting him go out on loan to Brondby], as seen in retrospect.”

That came amid Pukki’s rather incredible form for Norwich. After leaving the Hoops behind for just £608,000, he is now valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

The Finn has been sensational after swapping Brondby for the Canaries and has racked up a grand haul of 68 goals in 129 outings at Carrow Road. His best season was undoubtedly in the 2018/19 campaign, when he was named the Championship’s Player of the Season after scoring 29 goals in 43 league games.

Commenting during a rich vein of form for the 31-year-old, Norwich manager Daniel Farke remarked: “I think he was unplayable during the whole game [vs Birmingham]. They had problems controlling his movement and he created a lot.”

Celtic would go on to bring Moussa Dembele and then Edouard to the club but it was evidently a mistake to sell a clinical attacker like Pukki as cheaply as they did.
