Tottenham fans react as Christian Eriksen’s future takes another twist

[ad_pod ]

According to BBC Sport, Manchester United are unlikely to sign Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspur in the latter stages of the transfer window.

The report claims that United have held talks with the Denmark international ahead of a potential switch to Old Trafford before the window slams shut.

However, the piece from Simon Stone explains that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are of the opinion that Eriksen wants to move to Spain.

Real Madrid – who have previously been linked with Eriksen – are not in the race against the clock to complete a deal for the 27-year-old as their transfer window will be open until the start of September, should they wish to pursue his services.

However, Tottenham can only sign players before Thursday’s deadline and therefore Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in a tough spot.

As expected, a number of the London club’s fans have been on social media offering their views on the latest developments surrounding the playmaker.

Romaine Sawyers has helped bolster West Brom’s passing game under Slaven Bilic

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

It’s been hard to gauge whether West Brom are genuine playoff contenders this season, which isn’t a surprise considering we’re only three games in.

In those opening matches, the Baggies are currently unbeaten in the league after claiming two wins and a draw.

Slaven Bilic deserves appreciation as the team are looking much more attractive on the eye due to their style of football.

As we’ve mentioned on Football FanCast already this week, their issue could lie in scoring goals.

Last season, Dwight Gayle, Jay Rodriguez and Harvey Barnes bagged 55 of West Brom’s 87 goals in the Championship – on their way to helping the Baggies average 1.9 goals per game.

So far this season, they remain short of that number at a slightly lower 1.6 goals per game.

Bilic brought in four new arrivals on deadline day to try resolve that problem – a trio of wingers and a proven goalscorer at this level in Charlie Austin, who has bagged 66 in 130 appearances.

And they have improved substantially in one area of the pitch – in part down to the change in system and also by virtue of the arrival of one key man this summer.

On the Chalkboard

Romaine Sawyers rejoined the club in July having come through West Brom’s academy ranks as a youngster.

He was unable to break into the senior squad and went out to find game time elsewhere beginning with Walsall and then Brentford before sealing a £3m return to the Hawthorns.

His presence in the heart of Bilic’s midfield has been instrumental in their short season so far, as he’s often been the metronome making things tick.

Last season, the Baggies only managed a passing success rate of 76.7%, with them averaging 347 short passes per game.

Darren Moore was sacked before the Croatian eventually replaced him in June on a two-year contract, with James Shan failing to sufficiently impress to take the job on a permanent basis during his temporary stint in charge.

Under Bilic West Brom have managed a higher passing success rate of 85.5%, averaging 459 short passes per game – quite the improvement.

Sawyers has helped contribute to those numbers by being the key orchestrator linking the defence to the attack – he has improved game-by-game with his passing success rate so far this campaign, resulting in an impressive 98.4% against Luton Town on Saturday afternoon.

The 5ft 8 maestro is currently second in the league for that statistic when looking at players who have featured in each of the three Championship games this season.

Whilst the only midfielder averaging more passes per game in the league is Kalvin Phillips with 70.3,  just two more than Sawyers has managed per WhoScored.

Gary Neville, Graeme Souness & Sky Sports have to take some responsibility for racial abuse aimed at Paul Pogba

[ad_pod ]

It is unclear exactly when Graeme Souness was first openly critical of Paul Pogba but such has been the volume and variety of barbs since it has been labelled by some as an ‘obsession’.

In September of 2016 – just a matter of weeks after Pogba re-signed for Manchester United from Juventus – the former Liverpool heavyweight was questioning the midfielder’s footballing intelligence: “Does he have a football brain? He has still to develop his football brain.”

Soon after, he continued on this theme saying: “I don’t see him having a great understanding of the game.”

It should be stated at this juncture that this article is absolutely not about how good or bad a footballer Paul Pogba is. There is ample evidence out there to suggest he is far more high-yielding than he is given credit for just as some of the fault-finding flung his way is justified too. Let’s leave it there.

Returning to the topic at hand, further criticism courtesy of Souness of Pogba’s ability and impact at Old Trafford duly followed and trust us when we say that there isn’t time or room to highlight each and every one plentiful as they are in number.

At least here though – if looking for small mercies – the famously surly pundit was concentrating his ire at the French star’s performances. Granted at times he went for the man instead of the ball such as when he described the World Cup winner as ‘a YouTuber’ or when he insisted it was a ‘bonus’ that United’s most talented player was suspended for the Manchester derby. By and large though, in Pogba’s first full Premier League season Souness was mainly disparaging of the end product rather than the man responsible for it.

Last term however it all seemed to get a little personal, not to mention a touch strange.

In September 2018 he used his Times column to spew out a series of unsubstantiated castigations. “Pogba plays for himself, it’s all about how cool he looks, showing us how clever he isâ€. “Perhaps we’re now seeing the selfish player Fergie didn’t fancy the first time round?†he concluded.

Around the same time as this sharpened studs-up challenge the opinionated Scot was also wondering aloud whether “he treats football as a bit of a joke” and speculating too “if he trains properly every day. That is a stab at the dark at something that could improve.”

Two months later he was at it again, laying into the 25-year-old following a 3-1 defeat at Anfield where United were abysmal. With this being the last days of Mourinho’s reign there was plenty to get stuck into yet Souey concentrated his aim squarely on Pogba despite the rather pertinent fact that the player had not played any part in the mismatch, residing on the bench throughout: “Pogba must be thinking: ‘Surely I’m better than Marouane Fellaini? Surely better than Nemanja Matic? But if he had a better attitude he’d be better than any midfielder in the Premier League.”

The Liverpool loss proved to be Mourinho’s coda so again there was much to discuss in the days that followed. Souness though, now true to type, only had one person on his mind. “He really needs to have a close look at himself,†he chided with an overt insinuation that the player was to blame for the Portuguese coach’s exit. “”I never see him come off and think, he has put a shift in today. I see a player come off a football pitch that has done nice things, but as many good things as he has done, he has done equally as many bad things by giving the ball away, not tracking players, not doing the things proper players do.”

So in summary: Paul Pogba is ‘not a proper player’. He has a bad attitude. He is selfish. He lacks intelligence. He doesn’t train properly (there is precisely no evidence of this).

This is not a character assassination. This is closer to a vendetta.

What is more, it is an increasingly predictable one-sided feud that has not gone unnoticed by Souness’ Sky Sports colleagues. Last October, Jamie Redknapp essentially called out his punditry pal saying his regular reproval of the player was ‘unfair’ adding, “I think we talk about him too much at times.â€

‘We’ being the operative word because it is not just Souness at Sky who appears to have a significant problem with the player in question. In December when Pogba put up an admittedly cheeky dig at his former boss Mourinho’s departure (or at least it was widely perceived as such) an enraged Gary Neville responded by tweeting ‘You do one as well’. ‘Do one’ in Mancunian vernacular means ‘get lost’. It’s fair to say that Neville was in a wholly negative mood when he tweeted that.

This week meanwhile a missed penalty against Wolves prompted a lengthy on-air diatribe that was so fierce it bemused even his friends. Andy Cole said of it: “I get on well with Gary Neville, but when people start talking about treachery and all that… come on, this is a sport. Let’s get real. We love football but when we start talking on those levels, he left me scratching my head a little bit.â€

Neville was not alone incidentally in condemning an errant spot-kick in over-the-top fashion as illustrated by the tweet below.

There is much more too – of course there is – when it comes to Sky Sports personnel getting personal, only like with Souness’ 2016/17 treatment of United’s record signing there simply isn’t room or time to highlight them all. What we can state in a general sense is that whenever Manchester United are involved in a live game it feels like Sky purposely make it ‘The Paul Pogba Show’. They speak about him prior to kick-off and they discuss him after, even when, like the Liverpool game, he isn’t playing that day.

Check out which team have “the best defence in the Premier Legaue” in the video below…

As we have witnessed before and as we have witnessed again this week this sustained and unedifying isolating of an individual can lead us down some truly abhorrent paths. It feels extremely unjust to claim that Souness or Neville’s constant barracking of Pogba was in any way responsible for the disgusting racial abuse the player received after the Wolves game.

But then we think back to the media witch-hunt of Raheem Sterling that first began when he moved from Liverpool to Manchester City. Like Pogba, Sterling was isolated from his colleagues. He was held up as the personification of modern football’s ills. Then we think back to when Sterling was assaulted outside his club’s training campus by a man who kicked him on four occasions and then unleashed a particularly sinister racial slur. We think back too to the Chelsea supporter accused of racially abusing the winger at Stamford Bridge last season.

Would these hateful instances have occurred if Sterling had received the same impartial media treatment that so many of his peers enjoy? We don’t know for sure. And yet in our heart of hearts we do. The media has an influence on the public and a direct bearing on broadly held opinion. That is undeniable.

Just as we know in our heart of hearts what motivates Souness and Neville to lambast Paul Pogba with such regularity. It is little short of absurd to suggest there is any racial element anchoring their views. For the former Pogba has come to epitomise – rightly or wrongly – the modern mores of a 21st century footballer whereas Souness epitomises the old-school with the values inherent within. As for Neville his passionate opinions are grounded in a passion for his club.

Yet still they must take some responsibility for what took place this week. Because when you negatively and regularly caricature a person in front of millions of people you make them a target. And it’s common sense to acknowledge that not all of those millions of people will be free-minded or non-prejudicial.

Sky need to readdress their ‘obsession’ with Paul Pogba. Because right now it is beginning to edge towards a decidedly uncomfortable ethical line.

West Brom fans delighted with Jake Livermore’s performance in 3-2 win over Blackburn

[ad_pod ]

Some West Brom fans have taken to Twitter to praise Jake Livermore for his performance in the 3-2 win over Blackburn on Saturday.

The England international scored an outstanding goal, a curled effort into the top right corner, whilst also delivering an all-round solid performance in front of the Hawthorns faithful.

The 29-year-old recorded a key pass, made three tackles and also completed one interception to help the Baggies come out on top in what was a close game.

Livermore has started all six of the Midlands-based side’s Championship games this term, and is without doubt a vital player for Slaven Bilic in the middle of the park.

Watch the video below to find out how CR7 achieves some his best skills…

One fan below said that the former Tottenham man has been his Player of the Year so far this season, whilst another thinks that Livermore may be the best midfielder in the Championship – lofty praise, to say the least.

Let’s take a look at what the West Brom fans on Twitter have been saying…

Ex-Man Utd star Romelu Lukaku has never been happier, says Roberto Martinez

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by Sky Sports, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has revealed Romelu Lukaku has never looked happier.

What did he say?

The former Manchester United star was the subject of heavy transfer scrutiny this summer, before finally completing a move to Serie A giants Inter on deadline day.

Lukaku has scored two goals in two games for the Italian side, and Martinez has now admitted he has never seen the forward look more at ease with his career.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “This is the first time I have seen him free and happy. Going back to many camps I have not seen Rom so focused, so happy, so refreshed by the new challenge.

“I think he is now ready to face one of the biggest footballing chapters in his career with the Inter Milan move. And he is very driven to be as good as he can for the national team, so I have been very impressed with his happiness and the way he is looking forward to the football ahead.

“He was in a team with expectations to win at Anderlecht with Champions League participation (on top of that). Then he had a big transfer to Chelsea. As you know he had his time at West Brom, then a big transfer fee to Everton, another big transfer fee to Manchester United and now to Inter. Romelu does not get affected, he is one of the most driven boys you are going to see.”

Happiness is key

A multi-million pound earning footballer described as being “free and happy” for the first time in a long time. It really does feel a bit nauseating doesn’t it? Nevertheless, Martinez’s words on Lukaku provide a major explanation behind why the Belgian struggled at United.

Ensuring that a player is happy and in tune with the rest of the squad goes a long way to bringing the best out of them. After an impressive first season, the forward simply couldn’t hit top gear last year, and his revelations on NBA player Josh Hart’s podcast said it all. This was a man who didn’t feel appreciated at Old Trafford.

At Inter, Antonio Conte has laid out the red carpet for him and showered him with praise from day one. Everything is in place for him to succeed, and that’s something United could seriously have taken pointers from.

Wolves fans drool over Joao Moutinho on his birthday

[ad_pod ]

Joao Moutinho turned 33 on Sunday, and as expected, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ official Twitter account was on hand with a birthday message.

The midfielder, who joined Wolves from Monaco in the summer of 2018, has made 54 appearances for his English club in all competitions.

The Portugal international will see his current deal expire at the end of the season, though, and there are no signs of a fresh contract for the moment.

In response to Wolves’ official post, a number of the fans called for their club to sort out an extension for Moutinho as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, others simply took the chance to lavish praise on the experienced professional – some calling him the best player to ever play for the club.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with the midfielder’s future as he is very much a key player at Molineux.

Sunderland: These fans are not impressed with Benji Kimpioka

Benji Kimpioka’s contract at Sunderland comes to an end in the summer of 2020, as per Transfermarkt.

However, there has been no agreement reached on that being extended, with the 19-year-old wanting to become a first-team player and to get terms which reflect that, as reported by Roker Report, who interviewed his agent Martin Klette:

While insisting that his client is happy to be at Sunderland, Klette suggested that Kimpioka won’t sign terms to merely be sent out on loan, claiming that he wants to be in the first-team plans.

This seems like a big demand though, as he has only ever played nine times for Sunderland, with five of those appearances coming in the EFL Trophy.

In addition, his four league appearances total just 27 minutes, while he has only made the bench once this campaign, in the Carabao Cup against Burnley, though even then he didn’t come on.

With all of this in mind, there are not many Sunderland fans who are impressed by the 19-year-old’s demands.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the interview, including posts from dismissive Sunderland fans, can be seen below:

Profit Players: Chelsea and Oscar

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Chelsea paid around £25m to sign Oscar back in 2012 from Internacional in a deal that had then-boss Roberto Di Matteo appearing to jump for joy regarding the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge (BBC).

Indeed, the former Brazil international appeared to take to life rather well in SW6 as he managed to record some rather remarkable figures in his debut campaign. Having signed as a 20-year-old, the midfielder managed to net 12 goals and provide a further 12 assists for his team-mates in his 64 appearances (Guardian).

However, that was, perhaps, as good as it got for the South American, as he saw his contributions (and appearances) dwindle as each year passed by.

Oscar made 41 times the following season (with a contribution of seven goals and nine assists).

He played another 11 more appearances (with one assist) before deciding to leave Chelsea for the Chinese Super League.

That meant he would end his time at Stamford Bridge with a respectable record of 38 goals and 37 assists in 203 appearances (Transfermarkt), although it might not have been one that was worthy of the fee that was understood to have been paid for him.

It was reported that Shanghai SIPG had decided to splash an alleged £52m on signing the now-28-year-old, therefore handing the Blues a profit of just over 100% on the original figure they spent on him.

Oscar, though, appears to have repaid that huge transfer fee back with his performances for the Chinese outfit, as he has totalled 117 appearances that has seen him contribute with 36 goals and 60 assists.

Having moved to the Far East after thinking about the future security of his family (Guardian), it would appear Chelsea managed to cash in on him at the right time, as his figures were starting to be on the decline in the high-intensity style of football that the Premier League brings.

Chelsea fans, what did you make of Oscar during his time at the club? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them below!

Jamie Carragher names Thierry Henry as the toughest opponent he’s faced

[ad_pod ]

Jamie Carragher appeared on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel after Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

He was asked to talk about some of his best away day stories and seeing as the interview was taking place at Stamford Bridge, some tales of Liverpool’s famous clashes against Chelsea came up, specifically the subject of striker Didier Drogba.

Carragher, subsequently, was asked who his toughest ever opponent was.

The former England international was quick to confirm that Thierry Henry was, in fact, the toughest opponent he had ever faced.

The Arsenal legend scored 176 goals in 258 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal and netted nine times in 18 games against the Reds.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He was quick to remind viewers that Drogba didn’t actually score that often against Liverpool – he scored 11 goals in a total of 30 games – but he claimed that he had to be on top of his game to keep the Ivorian out whenever their paths crossed.

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone silences his critics in Leeds defeat

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…Â

West Brom’s unbeaten run to life in the Championship under Slaven Bilic finally came to a halt as Leeds United were victorious at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

Left-back Ezgjan Alioski bagged the only goal in the 1-0 win as he rifled an effort home via a Kyle Bartley deflection less than ten minutes before half-time.

The home side were made to work for their three points as the Baggies mounted an onslaught of serious pressure throughout the second half, recording 67.3% possession.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But their dominance came to no avail as Marcelo Bielsa’s side leapfrogged them to take sole possession of the league’s lead.

For the most part, Bilic named an expected starting XI though there was the surprise inclusion of Hal Robson-Kanu, a player Football FanCast tipped to start this very match earlier in this week.

It’s fair to say that experiment didn’t work out as the veteran forward managed just one shot at goal before he was replaced after an hour.

West Brom could also count themselves lucky that they didn’t lose the match by a wider margin – even despite being on top for large spells as Leeds still had their chances.

Sam Johnstone, the man between the sticks, was their saviour at times on Tuesday night.

Per SofaScore, the 26-year-old made eight saves, five of which were inside the penalty area – including this outstanding double stop…

He also managed one punch and one high claim as he asserted his authority in the Baggies’ box.

The former Manchester United shot-stopper has received flack for his performances on Twitter over the course of the season while some have even called for Jonathan Bond to replace him. However, this latest showing is sure to silence his critics.

Bilic brought in a third keeper early last month in Ali Al-Habsi, but Johnstone has managed to keep hold of his number one spot, and with matches like this one, that’s no surprise to see.

It could well have been a different, and far greater scoreline had the shot-stopper not been on the top of his game.
