Pundit tells Sunderland to sign former player in "unbelievable" transfer

TalkSPORT pundit Carlton Palmer has urged Sunderland to re-sign a former player in January, according to a recent report.

The Black Cats head into this October international break in an excellent position, as they sit top of the Championship table after nine games, losing just two matches under Regis Le Bris.

Biggest coup since Defoe: Le Bris could land a 'lifelong Sunderland fan'

Sunderland are now able to have a much-needed rest during this break and reflect on their intense 2-2 draw against Leeds United on Friday night. This break could give the Championship side a chance to get some players back from injury, but one individual who will not be returning soon is Ian Poveda.

Poveda has just played 44 minutes of Championship football this season, and he will have to wait a little longer to add to those minutes. The attacker was originally set to be out for two weeks with the injury he picked up, but Le Bris has since confirmed that Poveda could now be out injured for six weeks. It has been a frustrating start to life at the Stadium of Light for Poveda, and in the short term, it doesn’t appear to be getting any better.

Ian Poveda

Meanwhile, on a positive front for Sunderland, striker Wilson Isidor has revealed that he would like to join the Black Cats on a permanent basis. Sunderland have the option to buy Isidor from Zenit St. Petersburg at the end of the season, and the player seemingly wants to continue at the Stadium of Light beyond this 2024/25 campaign.

Pundit tells Sunderland to re-sign "athlete" as Black Cats eye deal

TalkSPORT pundit Carlton Palmer has urged Sunderland to re-sign Jordan Henderson in the January transfer window. This comes as the former Liverpool and Black Cats midfielder was linked with a move back to England over the weekend, as teams from the Premier League and the Championship eye a potential loan deal. Henderson is currently at Dutch side Ajax, but his lack of game time has caught the attention of teams ahead of January.

Jordan Henderson

Henderson obviously has previous experience with the Black Cats, as he started out at the club and continues to be a big fan of the Wearsiders. Palmer believes Henderson, who he labelled as an “athlete,” would be a “fantastic” and “unbelievable bit of business” for the Black Cats, but tax implications could prevent a deal from happening.

Palmer told Football League World: “It’s such a shame what has happened to Jordan Henderson. This is what happens when you make the wrong decision – the wheels come off.

It was the wrong decision for Henderson to leave Liverpool to go to Al-Ettifaq. It didn’t work out in the Saudi Pro League, so he decided to go to Ajax. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, but it’s still gone wrong for him. He failed to make the Euro 2024 squad, and he is not featuring regularly.

The same tax issues that prevented him from returning to England in January could be an issue again. He’s a very, very good player, a very good athlete, a great leader, and great to have around the dressing room.

What a return that would be if he could go back to Sunderland. They’re flying high at the top of the Championship, and signing someone like Henderson could be the catalyst that sees them get back to the Premier League. That would be an unbelievable bit of business from Sunderland. It would be great for the supporters.

But we will have to watch this space because if he is under the same restrictions with the tax, I can’t see him leaving Ajax now. But it would be fantastic to see him back at Sunderland; that could well see them promoted.”

"Talented" Sunderland ace now in line to return after missing last 7 months

As they prepare for the return of Championship action against Hull City this Sunday, Sunderland have been handed a welcome boost on the injury front with one star now back in training after seven months out.

Sunderland injury news

Sitting top of the Championship, Sunderland will be desperate to pick up where they left off before the international break and turn their early push for promotion into serious title contention. Last time out, Regis Le Bris’ side certainly proved that they can cut it against the very best that England’s second tier has to offer, earning a point courtesy of Illan Meslier’s moment to forget against Leeds United.

The international break has only offered the Black Cats further positives too, as they prepare to square off against Hull City in pursuit of yet another impressive performance under Le Bris, who has proved to be an instant hit at the Stadium of Light.

As reported by the Sunderland Echo, Jenson Seelt is now back in Sunderland training and in line to make his return to action for the first time since suffering a knee injury against Southampton all the way back in March.

Missing seven months as a result of that injury, Seelt will be raring to go and desperate to get back involved. This weekend’s meeting with Hull will likely be a step too soon, however, given the amount of time that the centre-back has been sidelined for.

Sunderland fans will be intrigued to see how well this former player is now doing.

What’s more, when he is ready to feature, the Dutchman will have a battle on his hands to jump ahead of Chris Mepham and the ever-versatile Luke O’Nien in Le Bris’ pecking order.

"Talented" Seelt's return will be key

Whilst O’Nien has adjusted to life as a centre-back incredibly well in the last year or so, Seelt’s return should hand Le Bris a fresh option to turn to if he wants to move his utility man back into the heart of midfield. Still just 21 years old, the Dutchman can slot straight into O’Nien’s role and, in doing so, finally make his mark at the Stadium of Light after just 11 starts in the Championship last season.

Among those who have praised Seelt during his time in Wearside is former manager Tony Mowbray, who dubbed the defender “so talented” on the ball after victory over Birmingham City, telling reporters via Sunderland AFC News: “I thought Jenson was good.

“In our minds, we’ve been wanting to get him on the pitch but it’s difficult [with Ballard and O’Nien’s form]. Really, he was going to come on and play.. he can play holding midfield and we thought he would come on and roll into midfield like we do with Trai Hume often. Jenson can do that because he’s so talented with the ball at his feet.

“Today he stood up to the test, you could see at times that it was a bit quick when they really jumped on us and pressed, there were times when it was a fraction of a second away from us being caught on the ball.”

Crystal Palace’s recruitment team eyeing exciting £25m midfield signing

Crystal Palace’s recruitment team are among the Premier League scouts plotting a transfer swoop on a £25 million midfielder, according to a recent report. Palace’s long wait for a Premier League win ended on Sunday as they claimed a surprise 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park. Pressure was mounting on manager Oliver Glasner, but he will hope that can ease as they claim their first league win of the season.

£17m Crystal Palace gem unlikely to play again in 2024 after injury update

It’s a blow for Oliver Glasner.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 27, 2024 Crystal Palace news and updates

The run of poor results has left Glasner fighting for his job despite the positive impact he made last season, so much so that new managers were being linked with the role.

Gareth Southgate was someone who emerged as an option for the Eagles last week, but the chances of Palace securing the former England manager are very slim, as he wants to take a break from football. Former West Ham manager David Moyes was also mentioned as an option, with the Scot interested in the possible vacancy. But Glasner has picked up his first league win this season, and he will be hoping it gives him time to turn around the poor form.

Away from manager news, Palace already have their eye on a potential January or next summer signing despite the club’s poor form in the league. The South Londoners are monitoring Trabzonspor midfielder Batista Mendy, as the Turkish side are open to selling the player for £16.5 million, but not in January, as they would want to keep him until the end of the current campaign.

The transfer news doesn’t stop there for Palace fans, as the club also have their eye on another midfielder, who will cost more than Mendy.

Crystal Palace's recruitment team plotting £25m signing

According to Voetbal24, relayed by Tribal Football, Crystal Palace are one of several Premier League clubs scouting midfielder Raphael Onyedika. The 23-year-old midfielder currently plays for Belgian side Club Brugge and has done so since 2022, when he joined from Midtjylland.

Onyedika has become an important player for Brugge, helping them compete at the top in Belgium as well as in Europe, where he has grabbed one assist in three Champions League games this season, and the form he’s shown has earned him nine caps for Nigeria so far.

Now, according to this report, Palace are among the English clubs keeping an eye on him during this campaign. Brugge are said to be open to selling the midfielder when the January transfer window comes around, with their starting price being 30 million euros, which is roughly £25 million.

Onyedika has had some disciplinary issues on the pitch this season for Brugge, but among the scouts who have watched him, there is no doubt about his talent and potential. The 23-year-old emerged on the radar of Galatasaray during the summer, but their efforts to sign the midfielder were rejected, leaving the door open for a move to the Premier League.

West Brom’s "relentless" loan star has seen value soar £31m since leaving

In truth, it has been a pretty dire October for fans of West Bromwich Albion.

Carlos Corberan’s Baggies have forgotten what the sweet taste of victory feels like this month, with zero wins coming their way, and only one meagre goal has found the back of the net for the West Midlands side across this patch of disappointing results too.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Corberan will be hopeful still that he can turn the tide from the dug-out, however, with the potential there for the Spaniard to get more out of the loan players at his disposal currently to lift spirits at the Hawthorns.

West Brom's current loan players

West Brom recruited a whole host of fresh loanees this summer to bolster their squad, which included the likes of Uros Racic joining the building from Sassuolo to improve the holding midfield spots at the second tier club.

Racic has impressed in glimpses for the Baggies, with two assists next to his name from eight Championship appearances, and more will be expected of the Serbian as the season drags on and Corberan needs to make full use of his camp.

Other faces have also joined the West Midlands club temporarily in the form of Lewis Dobbin, Mason Holgate and Paddy McNair, who will all be expected to play their part in West Brom’s attempt to win promotion.

All three new players have found minutes hard to come by since they arrived onto the scene though, with Dobbin only used off the bench sparingly whilst McNair only made his debut for the Baggies recently, but the ex-Manchester United man did at least keep a clean sheet during his first Championship outing for the second tier outfit.

Unfortunately, he did pick up an injury knock in the match after that promising league debut, but he will hope he can go on to be remembered fondly away from this unfortunate development, much like this ex-loan star who very much used his loan stint at West Brom as a stepping stone to stardom.

Conor Gallagher's time at West Brom

Before winning himself a move to Atletico Madrid this summer away from Chelsea, Conor Gallagher first began to properly make a name for himself in the men’s game during an impressive spell with West Brom back in 2020.

The 24-year-old had excelled in the EFL with the likes of Charlton Athletic and Swansea City, but this switch saw him acclimatise to the demands of the top-flight well, even if his new team fell back down to the Championship by the end of his time at the Hawthorns.

Gallagher would pick up two goals and two assists from 30 Premier League contests when on the books of the relegated side, with his value during this loan switch peaking at £9.9m when looking at the table above.

Yet, just a year on, the midfielder’s value would skyrocket up to £20m, with the Chelsea youth product starring away from Stamford Bridge once more at Crystal Palace, where he would pick up 13 goal contributions in all competitions before finally breaking into the first team at the Blues.

One of those strikes for Palace would see Gallagher thunder home this effort to gift the Eagles a memorable 2-1 away win at Manchester City, with the 24-year-old going on to win 18 senior England caps off the back of his electric Selhurst Park stay.

Amassing 95 first team appearances at Chelsea too, Gallagher – who was described as a “relentless” talent at the peak of his powers in West London by football content creator Mike Stavrou – would see his value rise all the way up to £41m, as of May this year, before he parted ways with his boyhood employers to move on to Spain.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

That’s around £31m more than the value next to his name when playing for West Brom just three years prior, as the Baggies hope they can play a formative role in more top loanees succeeding at the club moving forward.
