Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier was slammed by members of the media for his performance against Bournemouth in the Premier League this afternoon.

Leeds suffered a real blow in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League today, falling to a 4-1 defeat away against Bournemouth, which leaves them just one point above the relegation zone, having played one more game than Everton and Leicester.

The Cherries raced into a 2-0 lead inside 24 minutes, with Jefferson Lerma scoring a quick-fire double, and Meslier was accountable for the Colombian's second, after flapping at a corner.

Should Meslier be dropped against Manchester City?

It is not the first time this season the Frenchman has been criticised this season, with Jamie Carragher claiming he has "never been convinced" by the Leeds shot-stopper as he has "no presence" between the sticks.

Although he cannot be held solely accountable for the Whites' very poor defensive record, it is alarming that the £30k-per-week keeper is now ten Premier League games without a clean sheet after today's result, and his performance was very concerning.

The 23-year-old received a Sofascore match rating of just 4.5 – the lowest of any player on the pitch – having made two errors leading to goals, leaving Javi Gracia with a big decision to make before the trip to the Etihad Stadium.

It would be a very bold move for the manager to drop Meslier heading into such a difficult match, particularly considering backup option Joel Robles is yet to feature for Leeds in the Premier League season.

If he does stick by his first-choice keeper, Gracia will need a much-improved performance, after his involvement in the "complete and utter disaster" down at Bournemouth today.

Aged 41, it is time for the Ibrox side to move him on, and although he has been an excellent stalwart for the club, the previous few years haven’t been his finest and Beale must turn towards someone else to take on the mantle as the number one next term.

Robby McCrorie could be in with an excellent chance, however there is a youngster who is shining out on loan that could emerge as the next McGregor if he is nurtured correctly – Jay Hogarth.

Who is Rangers’ Jay Hogarth?

The 19-year-old is looking to follow in McGregor’s footsteps by gaining plenty as much experience out on loan during his formative years as he can.

The 41-year-old enjoyed a loan spell at Dunfermline which prepared him for the rigours of senior football and Hogarth has certainly impressed at Alloa Athletic this term.

Across 40 matches in all competitions for the Wasps, he has conceded 53 goals while keeping 11 clean sheets (all in the league) and the club have secured a playoff spot thanks to these wonderful performances.

Alloa boss Brian Rice praised Hogarth a few months ago, saying: “Jay has done brilliantly for us this season and has only missed one game.”

And it looks as though he has thrived at this level, gaining plenty of game time and could be set to take the next step up in 2023/2024.

The ‘keeper has also made progress through the youth groups at international level too, being called up for the Scotland U16s, U17s and U19s, although he has yet to make an appearance and the player has even been included in the Rangers’ matchday squad on several occasions, most notably for the tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, underlining how talented he is.

The youngster still has a long way to go, but if he continues this rich vein of form, there is no doubt the Gers may have another McGregor on their hands.

Italian publication Il Mattino, via Sport Witness, reports that there is doubt surrounding whether Kim will remain at Napoli, although the expectation is that he will leave. His contract contains a release clause which is set somewhere between €50m and €60m – the media aren't sure on the specifics, but depending on the location of the suitor, Napoli will quote a different price.

Chelsea are "ready to offer" whatever it will take to sign Kim this summer. He has earned rave reviews with his dominant and simple defending, giving the likes of Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratshkelia a basis upon which to attack from.

He ranks in the 99th percentile for the percentage of 'Dribblers Tackled' and 'Challenges Lost'. In short, he's a ball-winning animal and would safeguard Chelsea's defence for years to come if they can complete a deal to sign him this summer.

Northants, after a fourth-straight draw at home this season and sixth stalemate in seven matches, took 11 points.The final day began on time under leaden skies and a howling wind with Northamptonshire resuming 56 for 4 in their second innings, still trailing by 140. They lost nightwatchman Ben Sanderson in the fifth over of the morning – giving Ravi Bopara a seventh wicket in the match, one scalp short of a first-class best match haul.But only one more over was possible before heavy rain arrived and conditions did not improve throughout the afternoon.

Glasgow Rangers will head into the summer transfer window with plenty of work to do in order to build a team good enough to claim trophies next season.

Michael Beale will be given the time and funds to do this, however, business will need to be spot on, otherwise Celtic could motor on to new levels and leave the Ibrox outfit trailing behind.

Alfredo Morelos has already been confirmed as leaving, while Ryan Kent’s future also appears to lie away from Glasgow and this means Beale must strengthen his attacking options during the summer.

With recent reports suggesting that the Gers have scouted winger Luis Palma, Beale may be thinking that he could form a formidable attacking duo with him and Todd Cantwell.

Journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos has since claimed that the Light Blues are keen on signing him, yet no official bid has been made yet, with Aris Thessaloniki demanding €5m (£4.3m) for his services.

Who is Luis Palma?

Palma is similar to Kent in that he is a winger who can both score and generate assists regularly, having netted 13 times and registered eight assists across 36 games this term, proving himself to be a reliable threat for the Greek side.

Although Kent hasn’t quite been at the races this term with regard to goal contributions, registering just 13 goals and assists this term, the lowest of out of his four full seasons with the Light Blues, he still offered a threat from a wide position and since 2018, the Englishman has scored 33 goals and grabbed 57 assists.

That output will be missed but could well be replaced by the "outstanding" Palma – as dubbed by Honduran journalist Gustavo Roca.

One of his greatest strengths is his positional versatility, as the 23-year-old can operate on the opposite flank or as a centre forward, while even being known to drop deeper into an attacking midfield slot, with his career goals having been spread among these four positions.

The potential link up between Palma and attacking midfielder Cantwell, therefore, is a mouthwatering one and could cause havoc to opposition defences next season.

Indeed, the former Norwich City starlet has performed brilliantly since joining the club in January and will be a key cog in any success Rangers have moving forward.

Beale has deployed the Englishman on the right wing, and he is already the fourth-best rated player in the squad due to his Premiership performances – as per Sofascore – netting four goals and grabbing four assists in just 13 games, suggesting that after a full pre-season, he could be even better.

With Palma on the left, using his pace and eye for goal to devastating effect along with Cantwell utilising his creative talents on the right flank, Beale could set up two wingers who not only score but also generate plenty of chances for their teammates and whoever leads the line for the Light Blues next term should have an ideal opportunity to score plenty.

With six caps for Honduras and counting, Palma has international experience which will stand him in good stead should he make the move to Scotland and there is no reason to suggest he couldn’t shine in the Premiership.

The winger has scored twice against Greek giants Olympiacos this term, suggesting that playing the likes of St Mirren and Ross County shouldn’t pose a significant problem and his appetite for goal could give Beale another useful addition to his Rangers squad.

The dazzling talent may well require time to settle, but judging by his statistics over the course of this season, the £4.3m fee would be well worth it.
