Newcastle fans unhappy with Slimani selection

Newcastle fans are absolutely furious with Islam Slimani after the striker joined up with the Algeria squad for international duty.

Slimani has not had a particularly successful stint in England; the 29 year-old joined Leicester for a big fee in 2016 but failed to form the partnership many hoped he would form with Jamie Vardy.

Newcastle fans might have been hoping for a similar type of partnership to form between Slimani and Dwight Gayle, but Slimani is yet to kick a ball for Newcastle since his loan move in January.

The 56-cap striker joined in January for the rest of the season, and it could have been a win-win. Slimani scores the goals to revive his Premier League career, and keeps Newcastle up in the process. This hasn’t happened though, as a thigh injury has stopped the Algerian international from getting involved.

After training separately from the group at Newcastle’s warm weather training camp last week, Slimani has joined up with the Algeria squad for their friendlies against Tanzania and Iran, and Rafa Benitez doesn’t sound too pleased about it.

“What we have to do and what we want to do is be sure that he’s fit. If he can play with the national team a little bit, that is a risk, because he’s not playing for us,” Benitez said.

“But if they decide to play him, it is because he will be fit. Hopefully, he won’t have any problems. It is something we know we cannot control.”

Arsenal fans identify Ramsey as new club captain

Jack Wilshere sported the captain’s armband in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Stoke City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The England midfielder is yet to sign a new contract with the Gunners, but was given the armband against the Potters at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger shuffled his pack ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with CSKA Moscow, but Wilshere was included, as was Welshman Aaron Ramsey.

The 27-year-old, who has seven goals and 10 assists to his name this term, is also yet to sign a new contract with the Gunners, and his current deal will expire at the end of next season.

Ramsey is a hugely popular figure with the Arsenal supporters, however, and many have claimed that the Wales international should be appointed club captain for the 2018-19 campaign.

It is promising to be a summer of change at the Emirates Stadium, and Ramsey, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks, has been identified as the player to lead the club into potentially a new era.

Man United may think £50m is too much for Leicester defender Harry Maguire

According to reports in The Sun, Manchester United have been told they must pay £50m if they want to prise 6ft 4in Harry Maguire away from Leicester City this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that the Red Devils are among a number of Premier League clubs – including Arsenal and Tottenham – interested in snapping up the England international at the end of the season, but the Foxes won’t sell him on the cheap.

The 25-year-old centre-back has been one of the club’s standout performers this term following a move from Hull City last summer, establishing himself in the starting XI under Claude Puel as well as breaking into the Three Lions squad under Gareth Southgate.

The Sun adds that Jose Mourinho could be ready to offer Chris Smalling, whom United fans have said they want to leave this summer on Twitter, in part of any deal for Maguire in order to try and reduce the asking price, as he would likely be the one that makes way for any new central defender that arrives at Old Trafford this summer.

How well has Maguire done this season?

He has been brilliant.

The 25-year-old has scored two goals and provided a further three assists in 33 Premier League appearances for Leicester, while he has shown just how influential he can be from a defensive point of view.

According to WhoScored.com, he has won 51 tackles in those top flight outings this term, while he has also made 37 interceptions, 154 clearances and 33 blocks.

Maguire is also decent in possession and loves to bring the ball out from the back, successfully completing 45 of the 53 dribbles he has attempted.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly looks as though he would be, yes.

The 25-year-old has the qualities as a defender and on the ball to make it at the highest level, while his mentality and leadership qualities are two more impressive traits he possesses.

He would probably be an upgrade on the likes of Smalling and Phil Jones at Old Trafford, but the fans would probably expect a more high-profile centre-back to arrive alongside him this summer, too.

Is he really worth £50m?

In this day and age and with four years remaining on his contract he probably is, and United will know that they will have to pay the big bucks to sign a promising English talent.

Whether they are willing to do that remains to be seen.

Man United fans were delighted with Pogba improvement vs Bournemouth

Manchester United bounced back from their weekend defeat with a 2-0 win away to Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

After their shock loss to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, the pressure was on to respond with a victory mid-week, with Jose Mourinho looking for a strong performance from his players ahead of this weekend’s massive FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Portuguese manager made seven changes to his line-up for the visit to the Cherries, but it was one of the better United performances recently with players like Paul Pogba stepping forward to show he be in line to start at Wembley.

Fans were delighted with the Frenchman’s improved display in comparison to Sunday, believing he proved he can be an exceptional talent for the Red Devils.

His powerful run and pass provided the assist for Romelu Lukaku’s second half effort that put the game beyond doubt. It was Pogba’s 10th assist of the season in the Premier League.

Tottenham fans angered by Alderweireld exclusion

Tottenham fans are ruing missed opportunities after Saturday’s FA Cup defeat, and they can’t get over the exclusion of Toby Alderweireld.

It will no doubt be one of the stories of the summer – where will Toby Alderweireld play his football next season? If Saturday was anything to go by, it won’t be in North London.

Spurs were beaten by Manchester United on in the FA Cup Saturday, meaning it will be another season without a trophy for Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino has done an incredible job since moving to North London in 2014, but the optimism around the club seems to have evaporated in the last week, and fans are furious that Alderweireld didn’t play in their biggest game of the season.

The Belgian is stalling on a new contract, and it’s looking more and more likely that he will leave this summer.

However, he is probably the best centre back in the Premier League, so he really should be playing whether he’s staying or not.

Fans were angry before the match when the lineups were announced, and their worst fears were confirmed as the Red Devils cruised through.

Alisson suggests he’s open to transfer, but Liverpool may struggle to strike a deal

Roma goalkeeper Alisson has told Gazzetta Dello Sport that he is unsure where his future lies amid rumours linking him to Liverpool.

What’s the latest?

Loris Karius has shown improvements in between the sticks since he became first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Simon Mignolet at the start of 2018.

However, if the Reds want to compete for top honours on a regular basis, they need a proven world-class stopper that can take them to the next level.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Alisson has been on the Merseyside outfit’s radar, and in February the publication claimed that Roma had slapped a £70m price tag on the shot-stopper’s head.

It is unclear whether Jurgen Klopp will urge Liverpool to make a move in the summer, but the goalkeeper has been suggesting that he would be open to a transfer.

While speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Alisson said:

“I don’t know what will happen [in the summer]. Obviously, it is only logical that the interest makes me happy, but I don’t think it’s a question of needing [to move]. I know what I’m worth, not money-wise, but as a player. I know what I bring to the team, but I only think about the present. What happens next, we leave for later.”

Is a deal likely?

It would be a surprise if Liverpool were the only club keeping tabs on Alisson ahead of the summer window.

The Brazil international has been in fine form this season, but there is a major stumbling block in the Reds’ path.

Roma will not have forgotten the fact that Liverpool snatched their best player last year for a relatively modest figure.

Mohamed Salah moved to Anfield for around £36m, which is a snip compared to the form that he has displayed on the pitch this season.

The Egyptian international has scored 43 goals in all competitions, and has taken home the PFA Player of the Year award, the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year, and is on course to take home the Premier League Golden Boot.

It is safe to say that the attacker’s price has risen; in fact, Transfermarkt has the attacker valued at £72m, less than 12 months after he signed for Liverpool.

With all that in mind, Roma might not be so willing to do business with the Merseyside outfit, and if they are, the price is likely to go up.

Aston Villa fans loved Mile Jedinak’s performance against Middlesbrough

Aston Villa picked up a huge victory away to Middlesbrough on Saturday, their 1-0 win putting them on the verge of progression to the English Championship play-off final at Wembley.

It’s effectively half-time in the tie and Steve Bruce’s side know that one strong performance at home will ensure they head into the Wembley showdown for a place in next season’s English Premier League.

A first half header from Mile Jedinak was enough to secure the win, leaving Villa fans delighted and excited about Tuesday night’s match at home to Tony Pulis’ side.

They were also full of praise for Jedinak’s all-round performance throughout the 90 minutes, with the 33-year-old producing a fine defensive midfield display to protect his back four and restrict Middlesbrough to just a few chances.

Supporters will now be hoping he can hit those heights in the second leg, with another strong defensive performance likely required to keep a determined Boro side out.

Leeds fans react to rumour they would need to pay £6.5m to sign Jack Marriott

According to reports in The Sun, Leeds United target Jack Marriott would cost £6.5m if Peterborough United were to sell him this summer, and Whites fans have been quick to react to the rumour.

The Sun says that the Yorkshire club, along with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday, are all keen on the prolific 23-year-old attacker, but the Posh aren’t willing to let him go on the cheap.

Marriott scored 33 goals in 56 appearances in all competitions for Peterborough this season, and it is no surprise that Paul Heckingbottom could be taking a closer look at him with the likes of Caleb Ekuban, Pawel Cibicki and Jay-Roy Grot proving to be flops following their arrivals at Elland Road last summer.

Leeds supporters, who have urged the club to rescue a £35,000-a-week Premier League star on Twitter, took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said “and we thought Ridsdale was mental”, another said “he’s a £4m player at the most”.

HYS: Should Cahill or Christensen start vs Man United?

Chelsea have the chance to end their disappointing season on a positive note this weekend, when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

It could well prove to be Antonio Conte’s final game in charge of the Blues, that’s the collective inkling anyway, and the Italian will be eager to end his tenure with a strong record of two trophies in two seasons.

In order to overcome this Man United side, however, and halt the netting prowess of striker Romelu Lukaku, Conte must make the right call at the heart of his defence.

Captain Gary Cahill has drawn criticism this season but the 58-cap England man helped Chelsea cling onto a huge clean sheet against Liverpool a few weeks ago.

Andreas Christensen, meanwhile, has been one of the real success stories at Stamford Bridge this term, but has struggled at times against elite opposition and still lacks experience.

Both featured against Newcastle last time out, although it will likely be a choice between the two this Saturday with Antonio Rudiger returning to the starting XI.

West Ham fans heap praise on Loftus-Cheek amidst transfer links

West Ham fans are absolutely loving the latest transfer links, as reports suggest the Hammers will battle it out to sign England wonderkid Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

According to the Sun (29 May, page 52), both Everton and West Ham are keen to sign Loftus-Cheek this summer, with the Chelsea youngster unlikely to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham are in desperate need of reinforcements down the spine of their side, and the powerful but technically gifted Loftus-Cheek would certainly be a wonderful addition.

[ad_pod ]

The 22 year-old grabbed two goals and three assists in 24 Premier League appearances on loan at Crystal Palace this season, and even earned himself a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The report claims teams would have to pay as much as £40m to secure his services on a permanent basis, so another loan for the youngster could be on the cards.

Averaging three dribbles, one shot and over one key pass per game this season, the Chelsea youngster would bring a little bit of everything to Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham.
