Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has backed the selection of Soumya Sarkar and Shuvagata Hom, saying the decisions were taken based on Sarkar’s ability as a match-winner and to maintain stability in the side with consistent selections

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha defended the selections of Soumya Sarkar and Shuvagata Hom in the squad for the first T20I against New Zealand, which will be played on January 3. He also backed the decision to play Tanbir Hayder in the ODIs, saying the side was looking for a legspinner before the Champions Trophy in England later this year.Tanbir played the second and third ODIs, finishing wicketless in both matches and scoring five runs. Hathurusingha said it was harsh to judge a player on the basis of two matches.”Tanbir bowled well in [the training camp in] Sydney and then here also in the nets, and we were probably looking at the bigger picture,” Hathurusingha said. “We wanted to see a legspinner going for the Champions Trophy and the World Cup in England. So that’s another reason to play him as well. If you are expecting someone to come in and do well in two matches and establish himself, it won’t happen.”Tanbir bowled well in the first game, and then in the second game he didn’t bowl as well as we would have liked and neither did the other spinners in our team. So, in that case we are disappointed. But I don’t judge a player in one or two games because we picked him seeing something in him and he has done well in practice.”While Tanbir was not included for the first T20, the selectors showed faith with Soumya Sarkar despite his poor form in 2016. In 16 T20Is, he scored 287 runs at an average of 14.35 with a top score of 48. He scored 1 in the first ODI against New Zealand and was subsequently dropped from the remaining matches. Hathurusingha said Soumya was a proven match-winner and hence it was important to be patient with him.”When he [Soumya] scores runs we win matches. That’s why we are still banking on him,” Hathurusingha said. “Someone who has got a batting average of 40-odd and strike-rate over hundred, we don’t have many in Bangladesh or even in world cricket.”That kid can play international cricket. If you look at history, every good player – [Steven] Smith, [Joe] Root – all these guys got on to the international stage and then had a blip and then came back. I’m hoping that he will come back sooner than later.”Shuvagata took two wickets for Khulna Titans and averaged 9.58 with the bat in this season’s Bangladesh Premier League. Hathurusingha said that Shuvagata was picked to maintain consistency in selection process, since he played in Bangladesh’s last outing in the format, the World T20 in March 2016.”If you remember in the last T20, he played. We have to be very consistent in our selection,” he said. “We just can’t go by hearsay selection. What I am trying to do is bring stability to the team. The only way we can bring stability to the team is by how we act.”He played the World T20 and he bowled well in the last two games. He is in the squad because of that. The other person, I think, competing with him is Mosaddek [Hossain], who is a similar player as well.”
Chelsea are set to “discuss internally” the possibility of a deal to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Is Gabri Veiga leaving Celta Vigo?
The Spaniard has become a regular feature of Rafael Benitez’s new side since graduating from their academy last summer as he clocked up 55 senior appearances during his debut season. Having impressed on the big stage, his performances have alerted Mauricio Pochettino in the Premier League.
The La Liga starlet emerged as his side’s second best-performing offensive player and the third overall with a WhoScored match rating of 6.82 last term, and despite his contract still having another three years to run, it does have a €40m (£34m) release clause included.
Earlier in June, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg claimed that the 21-year-old is “ready for the next step” and “will leave” his boyhood club this window, where he name-checked the Blues as one of several suitors to have held initial “talks”, and the board must have liked what they discovered as they are now weighing up an official approach.
Are Chelsea signing Veiga?
Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that Chelsea have indeed been in discussions for Veiga and are set to hold in-house conversations as to whether they want to make a move for him. He wrote:
“Liverpool are informed on Gabri Veiga but they have submitted NO bid — and it’s not something imminent, again. Veiga remains in Chelsea list, they had direct contacts and will discuss internally [and] think about it.”

Should Todd Boehly go for Veiga?
Chelsea are reportedly set to submit a second bid for Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo, and whilst he’s naturally a defensive midfielder, he's also played in central midfield several times. With Veiga being available for just £34m, the Blues could totally transform their central ranks for years to come with a double swoop this summer.
The Spain U21s international is stronger in the offensive aspect of his game having registered 15 goal contributions (11 goals and four assists) in 36 La Liga outings last season which saw him hailed “dangerous” by journalist Zach Lowy, and he’s even a threat when the ball doesn’t hit the back of the net.
Veiga ranked in the 98th percentile for number of shots by midfielders, 62 to be precise, which was the second-highest total throughout his squad, as per FBRef.
With his versatility to operate in five different roles across the pitch, he would be a hugely exciting recruit for Todd Boehly and Pochettino.

Jamaica jumped from fourth to second place on the Group B table with a 67-run win (Duckworth-Lewis method) in a rain-affected match against ICC Americas on Wednesday. With the game reduced to 46 overs a side, Jamaica recovered from a shaky 53 for 3 to post 251 for 5, after fifties from Andre McCarthy (63 off 87 balls), John Campbell (66 not out off 42 balls) and Rovman Powell (52 not out off 38 balls). Campbell and Powell put together an unbroken 101-run partnership for the sixth wicket, which came at a scoring rate of 9.04. This was Powell’s second successive fifty in the tournament.Set a revised target of 254, ICC Americas were anchored by opener Kamau Leverock, who struck 75 off 83 balls. The rest of the batting, however, failed. ICC Americas lost seven wickets for 57 runs, folding for 187 in the 45th over. Legspinner Damion Jacobs took 5 for 24, his second five-for in List A cricket, to aid his side’s bonus-point victory.Barbados steamrolled Combined Campuses and Colleges by 200 runs for their fourth consecutive win in the tournament. Having compiled 294 after opting to bat, Barbados bowled CCC out for a mere 94 runs in an innings that lasted 36.2 overs. CCC gave up their last seven wickets for 50 runs, with the only notable contributions coming from Vikash Mohan (29) and Amir Jangoo (23). Sulieman Benn was the best bowler for Barbados with 3 for 25, while Jason Holder and Ashley Nurse took two wickets each.Earlier, strong performances from the batsmen took Barbados to a strong total, despite a late slump that saw them lose six for 36 in three overs. Of the top six batsmen, only one failed to score more than 30, with the top score coming from Roston Chase, who struck a 55-ball 76.
Tottenham Hotspur are now hopeful they will be able to hijack Barcelona's move for Athletico Paranaense forward Vitor Roque, having recently made contact with the player's entourage, according to reports from Spain.
Who is Vitor Roque signing for?
Reports have indicated that Roque is on the verge of a move to Barcelona, with the La Liga club agreeing a deal worth €45m (£39m) for the forward, despite the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain making late attempts to hijack the move.
The 18-year-old is likely to be announced as a Barca player later this week, however that has not deterred Tottenham from making a late swoop for the youngster, as reported by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness).
The Blaugrana are in very advanced talks to sign the Athletico Paranaense star, having already reached a "pre-agreement", but Spurs are now hopeful they will be able to hijack the deal, and they have already made their first move.
Tottenham are one of the clubs who have called the player's entourage in an attempt to make him change his mind, however it does not appear as though they stand much chance of turning his head.
The Brazilian is focused on his switch to Barcelona, and only the final documents need to be sorted before his switch to the Camp Nou will be confirmed.
Who is Vitor Roque?
After making his initial breakthrough with Cruzeiro, the starlet has since gone on to establish himself as an important first-team player for Athletico Paranaense, recording seven goals and two assists in 13 Brazilian Serie A games last season.
Football Scout Jacek Kulig has spoken about the youngster very highly, hailing him as a "top talent" due to his fantastic goal return last season, while he has also described him as "unstoppable."
Athletico Paranaense's Vitor Roque reacts.
It is no wonder so many top clubs are queuing up to sign the versatile forward, who is also able to play on the right-wing, but it appears as though Tottenham have very little chance of winning the race for his signature, with a move to Barca now very close.
As such, Ange Postecoglou should continue to focus on his other targets in attacking areas, having recently been linked with the likes of Beto and Ollie Watkins, with the latter viewed as a potential replacement for Harry Kane, amid the Englishman's uncertain future.

Leeds United have finally appointed their new head coach at Elland Road with Daniel Farke tasked with the challenge of achieving an instant bounce-back to the Premier League next season.
The Whites suffered relegation from the top-flight over a tight relegation scrap that saw Southampton and Leicester City drop into the Championship too, so for the three teams – who had all become established Premier League clubs in their own right – it will likely be a tough fight for the automatic promotion spots in the second tier.
In terms of recruitment, Leeds will need to get the ball rolling to make sure they can comfortably compete next season and, as it stands, the club have failed to confirm any incomings during a transformative summer so far.
Bolstering key positions on the pitch and being prepared for potential exits by some of their Premier League-proven talent will be essential in the West Yorkshire club's ability to dominate in Championship football.
One player who has now been linked with a move to the Whites is Liverpool centre-back Nathaniel Phillips, who despite limited game-time at Anfield – where he featured just five times last term – has shown glimpses of his ability to dominate and trouble opponents on many occasions both for Liverpool and in the second tier with Bournemouth.
The Athletic's Leeds reporter Phil Hay claimed this week that Leeds hold an interest in the defender who will cost £10m to sign this summer and revealed that he is a player that Farke has been interested in the past during his time at Norwich City.
Will Leeds sign Nathaniel Phillips this summer?
There is no doubt that improvements need to be made at Elland Road this summer following a real struggle to compete in the Premier League last season and one of the most important areas to repair is the defensive presence in the squad.
No other team in the entire top-flight conceded more goals than Leeds last season (78) despite the side scoring the second-highest amount of goals in the bottom half of the table (48), which is a testament to the troubles their defensive players found themselves in during the fight against relegation.
As a result, the signing of Phillips could be a great opportunity to strengthen and improve the back-line this summer and with the exit of Robin Koch confirmed would be a welcomed new addition.
Whilst Phillips' sporadic appearances at Liverpool make it hard to measure his impact in the Premier League, his six-month loan spell at Bournemouth in their Championship-winning season gives a glimpse of what Leeds can expect from his huge presence in his centre-back role.
Over 17 appearances during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, the 26-year-old tallied up an 82% pass completion rate, kept eight clean sheets and successfully completed 50% of his dribbles, as well as averaging 4.1 clearances, 1.5 interceptions, 76.1 touches and 5.9 duels won per game, proving that he is a dominant and solid defender when given consistent game-time.
Not only that, the Bolton-born titan has earned high praise from Jurgen Klopp, with the Liverpool manager full of compliments for his out-of-favour centre-back after his display against West Ham United a few seasons ago, stating:
"In the air, he's a monster! He was incredible."
With that being said, it would be a great piece of business for Leeds if they could secure the services of Phillips and with consistent minutes at Elland Road could play a vital role in improving the defensive performances next season.
Nepal completed a comfortable win against Kenya in Kirtipur after their batsmen chased down the paltry target of 156 with 118 balls and seven wickets to spare
ESPNcricinfo staff13-Mar-2017 ScorecardFile photo – Sharad Vesawkar struck 24 off 11 balls after taking four wickets•Kaushal Adhikari
Four wickets from Sharad Vesawkar – his best List A bowling effort – and half centuries from stand-in captain Gyanendra Malla and Dipendra Singh Airee took Nepal to a comfortable seven-wicket win against Kenya in the ICC World Cricket League match in Kirtipur. Nepal’s bowlers, led by Vesawkar’s four-for, choked Kenya’s batting with some economical bowling before the hosts overcame an early stutter – courtesy two early wickets from Elijah Otieno – to eventually canter home with 118 balls to spare. After being sent in to bat, Kenya lost opener Alex Obanda and Dhiren Gondaria in the fourth over before a 79-run third wicket-stand between Irfan Karim (38) and Collins Obuya (48) took them close to the 100-run mark. While the duo stemmed the fall of wickets, their partnership also took up 140 balls. Both batsmen fell in quick succession, following which tight bowling from Mahaboob Alam (7-5-11-2), Sagar Pun (7-0-19-1) and Vesawkar saw Kenya fall from 151 for 6 to 155 all out in the 47th over. Prior to Monday’s win, Vesawkar had bowled just two overs in 21 List A matches but helped to fill a void with both bat and ball created by the absence of captain Paras Khadka, who missed his second match of the series as he recovers from surgery for appendicitis.Otieno gave Kenya hope, removing Nepal opener Sunil Dhamala and Sagar Pun in his first spell. Malla was joined by Airee at 14 for 2 and stitched together a 111-run partnership to take Nepal to the brink of a win. Airee fell for 62 with Nepal needing another 31 runs to win, and Vesawkar then shone with the bat, scoring an 11-ball 24 and dispatching the last two balls for a four and a six to seal the match in the 31st over.
