Heath Streak, the Zimbabwe coach, will return to the IPL after being appointed bowling coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. Streak joins Simon Katich and Jacques Kallis in KKR’s backroom staff, and replaces Laxmipathy Balaji, who has taken up a similar role with Chennai Super Kings.Streak was previously bowling coach of Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017, the experience of which he feels would come in handy as he teams up with former Lions player and current KKR captain Dinesh Karthik.”DK is a lovely guy and he’s got a very astute cricket brain,” Streak told . “He is a very open-minded guy, and is open to listening. The best thing is he loves the game, loves talking about it and he was a good friend in the two years we had spent at Gujarat Lions.”Streak was also “excited” to work with India’s Under-19 fast bowlers Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi and hoped to ease their transition into the big leagues.”They really look technically sound, so for me, it is about giving them good tactical support and helping them out,” Streak said. “Playing at the U-19 World Cup is very different from playing in the IPL against highly-experienced players.”They have got the skills and resources to be able to do that; it’s just helping them make smart decisions, especially under pressure. That’s what it is all about — playing in the big league.”KKR, however, have other questions to address, like the fitness concerns over Andre Russell and Chris Lynn. Russell left his PSL duties for Islamabad United midway after suffering a hamstring injury, while Lynn’s dislocated right shoulder – suffered while fielding in the T20I tri-series final – ruled him out out the PSL completely.ESPNcricinfo understands that KKR’s management are fully confident of the full availability of these two players come April 7. Another concern for KKR from the PSL was the reporting of Sunil Narine’s bowling action. In the past, Narine has been reported in the IPL as well and his offbreaks were banned by the BCCI in IPL 2015. The latest report, however, does not affect Narine’s bowling in the IPL immediately, unless he is called for a second time in the PSL, or CWI runs tests that find his action to be illegal.

Delhi Daredevils have conceded the most sixes and fours and have the worst economy rate in the Powerplay this IPL season
ESPNcricinfo staff17-Apr-20181:34
‘Delhi’s Powerplay bowling a concern’ – Assistant coach Sriram
Delhi Daredevils began their game against Kolkata Knight Riders with a maiden. Then, they wrapped it up by giving only one run off the 20th over. In between, they conceded 199 and therein lies a significant problem. Glenn Maxwell picked up on it following their 71-run defeat on Monday and called for better execution from the bowlers.”Our lengths were a little bit mixed today, we weren’t really consistent with the ball,” he said in a post-match interview. “I think if you really break the game down, they got 200 off 18 overs with the first over a maiden and the last over going for one. We basically cost ourselves a lot of runs through the middle overs.”There are other issues as well. Daredevils have conceded 30 fours and 14 sixes, which have contributed to an economy rate of 10.75 in the first six overs of an IPL game this season. No team has fared so badly, on all of those counts. They began the season watching KL Rahul wallop the fastest fifty in the IPL – off only 14 balls. Then, they leaked 84 runs in 36 balls to Mumbai Indians’ Evin Lewis and makeshift opener Suryakumar Yadav. At Eden Gardens, despite keeping Chris Lynn in check, and dismissing pinch-hitter Sunil Narine cheaply, things fell apart yet again.”That’s something we need to address, and address very quickly,” assistant coach Sridharan Sriram said. “Against Kings XI, Rahul ran away, playing a blistering innings. Against Rajasthan, we were good. But in the last game we conceded 84 and today they were 19 off four [overs] and finished 50 off six.”Maxwell also rued a dropped catch by Jason Roy when Andre Rusell top-edged his third ball towards deep midwicket and Jason Roy couldn’t complete a low, diving catch. The KKR allrounder took full advantage of the reprieve, scoring 41 runs at an astonishing strike-rate of 341.66.”We probably dropped a tough, crucial chance off Andre Russell, but you’ve got to take those opportunities whenever you get them. He’s a really dangerous player and he made us pay.”All but one of Russell’s runs came off the bowler who almost got rid of him, Mohammed Shami. The contest lasted only nine balls but it was a sensational one, beginning with a dropped catch and ending with six monstrous sixes.”I think he’s got to come up with some sort of strategy,” Sriram said of Shami. “Started well today; his first couple of overs were very good and again that dropped catch was off him. It would have been a completely different day for him had [it been taken]. But that’s what sport is all about and then he got on the wrong side of Russell and I think when that happens, you’ve got to think very quickly and I think he just lost the plot a bit for six or seven balls and that’s enough for you to have a bad game.”
West Ham United are still in with a shot for silverware across all fronts after defeating League One side Lincoln City 1-0 in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night, despite not playing at their best.
David Moyes made ten changes to the side that fell to defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, and while the Imps proved a nuisance with their physicality and long throws – with The Athletic's Roshane Thomas remarking that West Ham were "struggling" in the first half – they got the job done.
That being said, there was certainly cause for concern, especially given veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was forced into making five saves and 12 ball recoveries, also taking 51 touches – with Sofascore bestowing him with a match-high rating of 8.3.
Having covered the contest, Thomas remarked at the "brilliant" performance of the Polish shot-stopper, with, as is so often the case, the lesser team a thorn in a squad of Premier League quality's side.
It was a return to winning ways though and a pleasing one at that, with Thomas Soucek netting the decisive goal in the second half; West Ham have been drawn at home to Arsenal in the fourth round, with the Gunners' £105m man Declan Rice returning home after leaving the Irons in the summer.
Having lost to Jurgen Klopp's Reds last weekend and against champions and title favourites Manchester City the week before – though with victory over Serbian side Backa Topola sandwiched between – Moyes has demonstrated his squad's strength in depth, having made comprehensive changes and prevailed against what could very well have been a banana skin.
Focus will now shift back to top-flight action, where newly-promoted strugglers Sheffield United will make the trip to the London Stadium to attempt to claim their first victory since promotion.
The Hammers' ten goals conceded in the Premier League is the joint-highest of any club in the top 14 thus far, and, as such, perhaps it is high time for Konstantinos Mavropanos to earn his first starting berth in the division since completing a £19m transfer from German outfit Stuttgart in the summer.
How did Konstantinos Mavropanos play vs Lincoln?
The Greek "gladiator" – as he has been described by former boss Pellegrino Matarazzo – did not cut the mustard with Arsenal in previous years and managed only eight appearances before moving on, picking up a red card in that time.
West Ham United managerDavidMoyesbefore the match
Sold for roughly £5m, Mavropanos kickstarted his career in the Bundesliga and forged 89 displays before West Ham came calling, and after making an "impressive" debut last week – as said by journalist Dan Woffenden – in the Europa League, he has now backed up his quality with another assured display.
According to Sofascore, Mavropanos recorded a satisfying score of 7.5 on the night, taking a mammoth 128 touches, completing 91% of his passes and winning all four of his duels.
Also making five clearances and preventing an opposing attacker from dribbling past him – a feat he also accomplished in Europe last week – the 25-year-old looks set for a big future under his Scottish boss' tutelage, and while he has yet to start in the English top-flight, the ingredients are there for sustained success.
As per FBref, the 6 foot 3 titan ranks remarkably among his positional peers, among the top 8% for goals, shot-creating actions and progressive passes, the top 11% for progressive carries, the top 6% for successful take-ons, the top 1% for tackles and the top 5% for aerial wins per 90.
To say that the £50k-per-week star is dynamic would be a disservice to his all-encompassing skill set, and while Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd have performed well at the centre of the Hammers backline over the past year, Mavropanos undoubtedly offers a different flavour.
It's now paramount that he receives his maiden start in the Premier League for West Ham, and against the physical Sheffield United on Saturday, this could well be the perfect opportunity for him to properly integrate into the system.
While this is so, another Irons defender staked their claim for a more prominent role after serving on the fringe for the opening phase of the 2023/24 campaign, and after a confident and positive performance at the LNER Stadium, full-back Ben Johnson has indeed made his presence known to his manager.
How good is Ben Johnson?
Johnson has been on West Ham's books since the age of seven, and while he was a fearsome winger in his formative years, a transformation into an attack-minded full-back has proved fruitful for his journey into the senior set-up.
Irons coach Stuart Pearce has been one to sing the 23-year-old's praises since his ascendancy from the youth ranks, saying: "He's a wonderful professional to deal with and work with. We're very proud to have him out of our academy system as well, which is a real plus for us, especially with the connection to this club with the academy.
"I think he's just developing and getting better and better, and like with all young players, the more game time they have, the better they'll get, so I am delighted for the boy."
Ben Johnson West Ham
He's made 88 appearances since his debut in 2019, but this season had only featured in the Europa League before Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash, benched for the first three Premier League games of the term and not even included in the matchday squad for the past three.
Against Lincoln, though, he took his chance and recorded an exemplary match score of 7.9, winning eight of his 13 duels, succeeding with all four of his dribbles, making three tackles, two clearances and a key pass, also hitting the woodwork.
It's important to remember that the ten-cap England U21 international produced a performance against a side plying their trade two divisions below West Ham, but it was positive nonetheless.
With the club fighting across four fronts this season and looking to achieve success in each one, the squad's overall quality must be aptly maximised and with Johnson galvanised by a pleasing match, he must now be unleashed on the Premier League.

Everton have been very up and down of late in the Premier League.
Overcoming both AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest in December has now been somewhat dampened by a 2-0 defeat on the road at Chelsea, with David Moyes’ men currently sitting in a middle-of-the-road ninth position as a result.
Thankfully, the days of relegation peril are far behind them, as Everton continue to seek out a spot in European competitions come the end of the season.
The Scotsman will surely be boosted in his bid to take the Toffees back to Europe by the January transfer window reopening, as the Merseyside giants already begin to be linked tentatively with some standout names.
Everton looking to seal Richarlison repeat
The Toffees broke the bank in the summer to bring in some new talents, with £42m of the £112m they spent in total forked out on rising star Tyler Dibling, while £25m was also splashed out on the services of ex-Leicester City midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
More millions could be used to land Jens Petter Hauge in January, with reports suggesting that the Premier League outfit has scouted the Bodo/Glimt winger extensively.
For far less money, having once cost just £7m for Botafogo to acquire, Everton could pick up Brazilian defender Vitinho, with Everton-focused journalist Alan Myers revealing recently that the Toffees are keen on the ex-Burnley right-back, as they seek out more depth on the right channel.
It is noted that Everton aren’t alone in their interest, however, with an offer also yet to be put forward.
But, for a modest amount, Moyes’ men could really solve some major issues that keep popping up in the right-back department by landing the 26-year-old, with the Glaswegian perhaps even winning his very own Richarlison in the process.
Why Vitinho could be Richarlison repeat at Everton
Richarlison and Moyes’ paths would never cross in the end at Goodison Park, despite both figures being clearly beloved presences on Merseyside.
Everton were crying out for a dynamic attacker to fill the void left behind by Romelu Lukaku’s departure in 2017, with Richarlison going on to bag a weighty 26 Premier League goals across his first two seasons at the club, leading to former Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti heralding him as a “top striker.”
Vitinho would hope he could come in and be as instantly impactful in the troubled right-back spot at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, having been noted for having an “impeccable” attitude at Turf Moor by Vincent Kompany, for always giving his all donning a Clarets shirt.
Four goals and seven assists came the 5-foot-9 defender’s way in Lancashire, three of which came about in the Premier League even as Burnley struggled against the drop. A goal threat, he is also an adaptable presence, featuring five different positions during his time under Kompany. Richarlison, as well as being Brazilian like Vitinho, was also a versatile presence during his days at Goodison.

Indeed, Richarlison would go on to pick up 30 goals for Everton from down the left or right flank, away from just competently completing his centre-forward duties, with Vitinho also gaining joy from the right wing when he was briefly in England, with four goal contributions collected here, from a minimal 15 appearances.
The right-back spot will be where he’s expected to shine at the Hill Dickinson if a move is finalised in January, though, with Moyes far from impressed with Jake O’Brien’s performance here against Chelsea, when he disastrously gave away possession a high 25 times.
The Botafogo number two has even been handed a Brazil cap in recent times by Richarlison’s former boss in Ancelotti, as another South American gem is set to be unearthed on Merseyside, if everything falls into place across the frantic window to come.

The South Africa head coach also mentioned Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar as possible candidates for the No.4 position at next year’s World Cup

Ottis Gibson addressed his first press conference as South Africa’s new coach•Associated Press
News of AB de Villiers’ retirement came as a “shock” to South Africa’s coach Ottis Gibson, who still believes that he has enough time to plan for the World Cup without the marquee batsman. The tournament is 12 months and 23 ODIs away for South Africa and Gibson has opened the door to all South Africa’s franchise cricketers to try and stake a claim in the national squad.”The announcement came as a shock to me. He called me the morning before he made the announcement to tell me what he was planning to do. We had a long conversation around, ‘are you sure you are doing the right thing?’ He reckons that he is. He has spoken with the people who are close to him and he reckons he is tired,” Gibson said.”Of course, it’s disappointing. He is one of the best players in the world. He could have made a huge difference in the World Cup and he knows that. Yes, it’s disappointing for the country and for world cricket. But it gives an opportunity for somebody to put their hand up. There is a big space somebody can fill. If I was a young cricketer playing franchise cricket in the country and I saw that there was a position at No.4, I would be doing everything I can to make sure that position is mine.”While Gibson did not want to name too many possible candidates, he mentioned Aiden Markram, who captained in five of the six ODIs against India last summer, and Dean Elgar, who has scored three fifties in his last three List A games for Surrey, as possibilities.Elgar is a particularly interesting case because he has only played six ODIs for South Africa, and none since late 2015, but has long insisted he does not want to be boxed in as a long-format player and his time in the UK could put him ahead of the queue. “When it comes to picking a team for the World Cup, we will pick guys that we believe can go and perform in that set of conditions. Dean playing country cricket puts himself in the picture,” Gibson said.Perhaps most importantly, with a player like Elgar, Gibson may not need to see as much of him as with a less experienced player. At least, that is what Gibson explained when he discussed whether Vernon Philander, who has played 30 ODIs and last appeared in coloured clothing mid-2015, may also be considered. “With experienced players like Vern – we know what he can do. If we are widening the pool, we don’t need to see him immediately. Vernon doesn’t need to be playing every game leading up to the World Cup to come into the conversation,” Gibson said.Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar: possible World Cup candidates for South Africa?•AFP
Instead, players like Philander and Elgar and even Dale Steyn, who is aiming to make his comeback from a heel injury for Hampshire next month, may only feature in ODIs early next year, when South Africa play their last 10 matches ahead of the World Cup, according to Gibson.Steyn’s name has popped up again, even though he seemed to have only an outside chance of playing at the World Cup, after Morne Morkel’s retirement. While a Test return might be a higher priority for Steyn, because he only needs three wickets to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading Test wicket-taker, Gibson has brought his name into the white-ball conversation.”Dale Steyn could come into the World Cup, if he gets fit. We don’t need to see him now,” Gibson said. “Dale is very passionate about playing for South Africa. All the conversations I have had with him, he just wants to get back on the park and play for South Africa. When retirement comes, who knows? If he comes back and he plays well for a few games and he thinks I am satisfied – because he has been injured for a long time – therefore he wouldn’t want to retire having been injured. Maybe he wants to play a couple of games, get back on the park so he can get the sort of send-off he deserves.”While there are no current plans for a similar celebration for de Villiers, Gibson also suggested that may happen, though he does not know in what form. “For the country, it being AB, one of the best players in the country, it would have been nice for us to give him the sort of send off that we gave to Morne Morkel when he made his decision. Hopefully that can still happen,” Gibson said. Some hopeful supporters may see that as a suggestion de Villiers would have a last hurrah, even if only for his franchise, Titans.De Villiers said in his retirement video that he would still like to make himself available for domestic cricket but Gibson cannot concern himself further with that. “When you retire, you retire, You don’t still say I might still try and play again here and there. It seems to me like the announcement leaves a few things hanging, like he might still change his mind later on but I can’t really focus on that,” Gibson said.Asked whether he tried to talk de Villiers out of retiring, Gibson revealed that he suggested de Villiers continue playing ODIs only until the World Cup, especially as he appeared to be on top of his game, but respected that the decision to walk away had already been taken.”It seemed to me and to everybody watching that he was enjoying his cricket when he came back. When I first came, he was on a break. We saw him in the IPL taking Spiderman catches and looking like he is enjoying his cricket. That’s why I said it was a shock. I did sort of say, ‘What about giving away Test cricket and still playing one-day cricket with the World Cup coming up?’ and he said he spoke about it with all the people he needed to speak to and that is the decision he has come to,” Gibson said. “Once he has made that decision, there is no point in me trying to get him to change his mind. He wouldn’t have made the decision lightly. I don’t think there is anything I could say that would make him change his mind and once that decision is made then I need to try and get the group together and move on. Sport moves on very quickly.”
