Sri Lanka decided not to enforce the follow-on after taking a 214-run first-innings lead, which they stretched to 338 by stumps with both openers scoring fifties again
The Report by Firdose Moonda21-Jul-2018Dilruwan Perera celebrates a wicket•Associated Press
Think Galle, and now think of how things could have become more galling for South Africa. That’s what happened on the second day at the SSC, where Sri Lanka took significant strides towards a series win.South Africa succumbed to their second-lowest total in Sri Lanka, a mere seven days after they had slumped to their lowest on the island, to concede a first-innings lead of 214 runs. Sri Lanka’s spinners ripped through them for a third time, with Akila Dananjaya picking up his second five-wicket haul in his third Test. Akila had a day to remember, after also notching up a career-best undefeated 43 to help Sri Lanka swell their first-innings total to 338.Already that seems like enough, but with three days left in the match, Sri Lanka will look to pile it on, having chosen not to enforce the follow-on, against a wearing attack. Dale Steyn remains a wicket away from overtaking Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading Test bowler, but delivered four overs without success, bowling third change. Lungi Ngidi, who left the field in Sri Lanka’s first innings after being pinged on the shin when he dropped a return catch offered by Akila in his follow-through, returned during the second innings but only bowled fourth change, forcing Faf du Plessis to use part-timers Aiden Markram and Theunis de Bruyn. Kagiso Rabada shared the new ball with Keshav Maharaj, the only bowler to make some incisions.Maharaj’s first innings nine-for surpassed Allan Donald’s 8 for 71 in Harare in 1995 as the best figures by a South African bowler away from home and second-best figures by a South African in an innings, anywhere. He picked up two second-innings wickets, putting him just two behind Makhaya Ntini’s 13 scalps, the most in a match by a South African, but his efforts are unlikely to save South Africa. So far in this series, the visiting batsmen have lasted 54.3, 28.5 and 34.5 overs – a total of 118.1 overs – the equivalent of under four sessions in three innings. They have scored fewer runs in total, 323 in three innings, than Sri Lanka’s top-scorer Dimuth Karunaratne, who is unbeaten on 59, with 329 runs in the series and counting.South Africa’s approach against spin continues to be muddled and they have failed to answer the most pressing questions about batting on the subcontinent. Should they play for the turn, or not? Should they sweep, or not? Should they defend, or not? Some of them, clearly, cannot trust their defence. Like Dean Elgar. He blocked the first three balls he faced, from Dilruwan Perera, and then went forward to dead-bat a fourth but Akila got the ball to dip, spin away and take the edge. Dhananjaya de Silva took a good, low catch at second slip.Others are unsure what the ball is doing out of the hand. Like Theunis de Bruyn, who was included as a seventh specialist batsman and moved to No.3. He played for turn to an Akila ball that went on straight and was caught behind. Or Aiden Markram. He was trapped lbw, also playing for turn against Rangana Herath.Sri Lanka’s veteran only took one wicket in South Africa’s first innings, though he could have had two, Hashim Amla dropped off him when he drove to short cover only for Danushka Gunathilaka to fluff the chance. Instead, Amla became only the third South African to reach 9,000 Test runs. That number will receive its dues in years to come. For now, South Africa need him to play like a man with 9,000 runs to his name and that did not happen.Amla showed some signs of regaining form in a 55-run stand with du Plessis which was also the second-highest partnership South Africa have posted all series, but it was du Plessis who looked in control. The captain showed intent immediately after lunch when he struck five boundaries in six balls, and needed support. Amla could not provide it when he inside-edged onto his pad to offer short leg a catch and start the procession. Then the sweep came into play. Du Plessis prospered and perished by the shot, eventually bottom-edging a Dilruwan delivery that was confirmed to have made contact with the bat on review. Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock were both confident on the sweep, but by then, South Africa’s troubles were too deep.Bavuma chipped a catch to short leg, Maharaj top-edged a sweep to square leg and de Kock was pinned on the front pad to give Akila his fifth. After all that, South Africa had to take the field again and looked as though they wanted to be anywhere but in Colombo. A flat first 18 overs allowed Sri Lanka’s openers to race to 91 without loss, with Gunathilaka scoring a second half-century in the Test before holing out to deep midwicket. In his next over, Maharaj successfully reviewed an lbw appeal against de Silva and the only other wicket fell when Kusal Mendis was run out. Karunaratne remains in control and with Elgar extracting sharp turn in the final over of the day, it seems only one result can be achieved.
Houghton will be assisted by John Wright, who was the club’s specialist Twenty20 coach this summer, who has been appointed in an advisory role supporting recruitment

The former Zimbabwe Test batsman Dave Houghton is returning to Derbyshire as the county’s new head of cricket from the end of the current season.Houghton, 61, who still lives in Derby, has spent two previous spells with the county, the first as director of cricket between 2004 and 2007, the second as batting coach from 2011 to 2013, the role he currently occupies at Middlesex.Houghton will be assisted by John Wright, who was the club’s specialist Twenty20 coach this summer, who has been appointed in an advisory role supporting recruitment, talent identification and cricket strategy.Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman, who has been combining his duties on the field with a de facto position as head of cricket since Kim Barnett stepped down from his consultancy role at the club in July, welcomed the appointment, although he admitted he has yet to learn how Hougton’s arrival will impact on him.”It is a fantastic move by the club,” Godleman said. “Dave is a fantastic guy with excellent cricket experience.”I know he cares deeply about the club. He still lives in the area and we are really fortunate to have the cricket brain and the good man that is Dave Houghton.”I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and we will learn more about what he plans to do when he takes up his role but I’m just feeling that we are fortunate to have him and however the new structure falls I will play my role in supporting the club as best I can.”In statements made through both Middlesex and Derbyshire, Houghton said:”I have really enjoyed my time at Middlesex and I’m grateful for their understanding. It has been a difficult decision, but the opportunity to take up the head of cricket role at Derbyshire was not one I wanted to miss.”I’ve had four outstanding years at Lord’s, working with excellent players in a terrific facility and I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to work at Middlesex and at Lord’s.”One of my lasting memories was being a part of the team that won the 2016 County Championship title.”There is an excellent group at Derbyshire, led by club captain Billy Godleman, who are committed to improving and I am looking forward to working with them.”On a day-to-day basis, we want to make sure we provide greater support to the players and we will put a strong emphasis on development to reinforce the group of experienced and talented guys in the dressing room.”It’s clear that the club has made great progress over the last few years and we want to continue this improvement, develop the squad and ultimately be competing for trophies.”He leaves Middlesex with that county’s blessing. Middlesex’s Managing Director of Cricket Angus Fraser said: “David came to me a week ago to tell me that he’d been offered the position of head of cricket at Derbyshire and that he’d like to take up the opportunity.”David’s home is in Derby, he does a lot of travelling, and this opportunity is a promotion for him – with these factors in mind I was more than happy for him to take up the position.”He is a top man who will be sorely missed, and he has done an enormous amount of good work with the players at the club. He leaves us on very good terms, is thankful for “the happiest four years he’s had coaching” and all of us at Middlesex Cricket wish him the very best of luck in this new challenge.”Houghton’s appointment ends a lengthy period of uncertainty at Derbyshire, who have not had a full coaching structure in place since Graeme Welch resigned as elite performance director in June 2016.Although Barnett spent a season and a half working for the club in an advisory position alongside Godleman and first XI coach Steve Stubbings, it was never seen as a long-term arrangement.Although he is a popular and respected person in the game, Houghton’s record in his previous period as head coach at the County Ground was not outstanding in terms of results. He was commended for having improved the quality of the squad his contract was ended by mutual agreement in 2007 after a couple of poor seasons for the team in both red and white ball cricket.Regarded as one of the world’s best batting coaches, Derbyshire won promotion when he returned to the county in that position but after relegation from Division One the following year prompted a management review and the replacement of Karl Krikken in the main coaching role, Houghton went as well.Since then he has had a stint as batting coach with Somerset and was part of the coaching team at Lord’s when Middlesex won the Championship in 2016. He will complete the season at Lord’s before joining Derbyshire in October.Derbyshire’s cricket advisory director, Colin Tunnicliffe, who led a recruitment panel that included chairman Ian Morgan and chief executive Simon Storey, said: “David is highly-respected within the game and brings a wealth of experience to the role.”During the recruitment process, he impressed us with his vision for the club and made it clear that he wants to continue and build on the progress shown over the last couple of years.”As a club, we want to put a strong emphasis on developing young and home-grown cricketers, and David is also passionate about this as we build for the future.”We are equally pleased that John Wright has agreed to remain with the club as an advisor. Under his leadership, we have seen great progress in the Vitality Blast and having access to his experience and global network will support David in his role.”

Manchester United have had a week to forget so far, with an update claiming the Red Devils squad aren’t happy with one thing at Old Trafford.
Man Utd kit problems
Erik ten Hag has had to watch back-to-back 3-0 home defeats in the space of four days against Manchester City in the Premier League and Newcastle United in the EFL Cup. As a result, he has come under plenty of pressure regarding his future in charge, although the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe seemingly view his position as safe for now.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that some of the Man Utd squad aren’t happy with the kit this season. Goalkeeper Andre Onana is thought to be wearing a replica top and some outfield players using different socks after complaining they are too tight. Talking to Football Insider regarding the Man Utd kit issue, finance expert Kieran Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, said it looks like the players are making excuses which is making the club “look a bit of a laughing stock”.
“I think Adidas will be absolutely furious about this. It looks like excuse-making from the players. We’re at a time when I think Manchester United fans are looking for somebody to stand up and represent what they feel about their love of the club.
“But it’s making Manchester United look a bit of a laughing stock if you’re blaming it on socks being too tight. I don’t see what that’s got to do with the complete lack of effort and players throwing in the towel during the match.
“So you can understand that Adidas will be pretty furious given that they do have this £900million deal with Man United. I don’t think it will have a negative impact on sales but the optics look really poor, where there are clearly issues at the club in terms of its culture.”
Jadon Sancho
Man Utd kit sales
Maguire believes that Adidas won’t be happy with the complaints from Old Trafford, and you can see why, especially with the huge deal they have with the Red Devils. It isn’t the first time we have seen something like this during the campaign, with Aston Villa’s squad also not happy with Castore with their shirts.
However, Man Utd sold around 1.75m shirts last season, more than Man City and just behind Liverpool at the top, so if supporters hear about the first-team squad being unhappy with the kit, then perhaps it could have a knock-on effect when it comes to sales.
Hopefully, that isn’t the case and United can find a solution to their kit issues and get back to winning ways on the pitch, but at this moment in time, there seems to be problems everywhere you look at Old Trafford.

Desde então, o Braga somou duas vitórias e três empates, a maior do time na competição nacional.
Durante o período invicto, o Massa Bruta marcou sete gols e sofreu apenas dois. Sendo que nos últimos três jogos, o time não foi vazado.
Leeds United could be set to lose another one of their rising stars next year alongside Finley Gorman, according to a new report that has recently emerged.
Man City agree deal for Finley Gorman
The Whites have a history of developing younger players with the aim of bringing them through the academy to integrate them into the first-team later in their career, with the likes of Sam Byram and Jamie Shackleton being prime examples under Daniel Farke. Gorman is another hugely promising product who has been working his way up the ladder through the club's system, but his impressive performances have caught the eye of Man City, who have already started completing the necessary steps towards a switch.
According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Premier League giants Man City have agreed a deal to sign the 15-year-old for a seven-figure fee, which is a British transfer record for a player his age, though if the following update is to be believed, he might not be the only one heading for the exit door in the near future.

In West Yorkshire, Harry Gray is a regular feature of the U18s side and he also represents England internationally at youth level, and whilst Pep Guardiola’s side are set to secure the services of Gorman, it’s believed that they are also looking to make a separate swoop for the teenage attacker who is his teammate.
Leeds facing battle to keep Harry Gray
According to TEAMtalk, Man City are plotting a move for Gray, but as it stands, it’s highly unlikely that he will leave and follow in the footsteps of Gorman with his family wanting him to remain in the Championship.
“Manchester City are plotting a second raid on Leeds United for teenage sensation Harry Gray after agreeing a deal for Whites youngster Finley Gorman, sources have told TEAMtalk. Despite City’s interest, however, Gray’s family are not in a hurry to see the player move on and would likely advise both Harry – and any forthcoming interest in Archie – be batted away for now. As a result, we understand there is a confidence at Leeds that any approach from City will be rejected.”
Leeds United's home stadium, Elland Road.
Gray is a real star in the making
In the U18s Premier League, Gray has already scored three goals in the same number of games so far this season which shows just how prolific he can be in the final third (Transfermarkt – Gray statistics), therefore, Leeds need to do everything they can to retain his services.
Farke’s up-and-coming prodigy has also already received heaps of praise from club reporter Phil Hay, who previously said: “Harry is another one they’ve been talking about for a long time as [he’s] looking incredibly talented, masses and masses of potential."
Furthermore, Gray is the younger brother of Archie, who has established himself as a first-team regular, recently attracting interest from Liverpool, Everton and Crystal Palace, so it’s vital that the board fend off interest in the siblings and keep them in the building for the foreseeable future.
An unrelenting workload over the last four years has now sparked discussion about the possibility of resting the Pakistan captain for parts of the upcoming home season

Sarfraz Ahmed walks back after another failure with the bat•Getty Images
The pressures of the Pakistan captaincy are beginning to tell on Sarfraz Ahmed. A disappointing Asia Cup campaign ended on Wednesday night in Abu Dhabi with a loss to Bangladesh, leading a frazzled and overworked Sarfraz to admit to sleepless nights during the tournament.Besides, an unrelenting workload over the last four years has now sparked discussion among management and selectors about the possibility of resting him at some stage during the upcoming home season.Pakistan won just two games in the tournament, were thumped twice by India and decisively beaten by Bangladesh in the Super Four stage. Sarfraz’s own showing with the bat was a continuation of the patchy form of the last two years.Since the high-water mark of his ODI batting in the summer of 2016 in England, he has tapered off and is now in a bona fide slump: since his match-winning fifty against Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy, he has averaged 17.2 with the bat. His position in the order is not settled – that summer in England he batted at No. 5, a position he has batted at just once since then. In the Asia Cup, he batted at Nos. 4, 5 and 6.His captaincy, in some selections and on the field, has suffered and though his glovework was mostly tidy, it has been affected in the past.”Look, the pressures of captaincy are always there,” he admitted after Pakistan’s defeat on Wednesday night, in what was an unusually – for him – testy press conference. “Pakistani captains, whoever they are, always have pressure. Obviously, when you aren’t performing and the team is losing then there is more pressure.”The truth is that if I say I haven’t slept for the last six nights nobody will believe me but… this is part of life and it will go on. I will say again we don’t need to press the panic button.”The results, and probably Sarfraz’s workload, have contributed to the sleeplessness no doubt. Since September 2014, around the time he was becoming a permanent fixture in all three formats, only Joe Root and Virat Kohli have played more international games than him. He has missed only one series – the ODIs in Australia in early 2017 – in that time and that too because his mother was ill.Since he became captain, Pakistan have also not been picking a replacement wicketkeeper in their squads, meaning Sarfraz has had to play even warm-up matches. That may now change. ESPNcricinfo understands that Sarfraz could be rested at some point during the two home series against Australia and New Zealand – possibly in the T20Is.To that end, Mohammad Rizwan, who is in the Pakistan A team to face Australia next week, will likely stay on as a back-up through the season. Mohammad Hasan, another wicketkeeper, could also be called up as cover for Rizwan for the Pakistan A games later in the season.Asked after the Bangladesh game whether he needed a rest, Sarfraz snapped back: “This is not my job, this is the job of the selection committee and the PCB. Let them decide. I gave you an answer, it is not my job. My job is to play, I will play. I will keep playing.”
