Tottenham eyeing January move for Kalvin Phillips as loan fee shared

After securing deals to sign Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, Tottenham Hotspur's transfer business may not be done this month, with reports suggesting they could yet move to sign a Champions League-winning midfielder for Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham transfer news

Looking to replace Heung-min Son whilst he's on international duty at the Asian Cup with South Korea, Spurs welcomed former Chelsea striker Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. As he seeks Premier League redemption, the German could make his debut against Manchester United. Speaking on Werner's arrival, Postecoglou said:

"I had a good chat to [Technical Director] Johan Lange about it and thought Timo would be a really good fit for us stylistically. He certainly has the kind of attributes we look for. A player in that space – he can play in all three positions so that’s some real depth and quality for us in the front third."

The Lilywhites then followed up Werner's arrival by signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin for a reported £25m, beating Bayern Munich to his signature. Like Werner, the defender could make his debut at Old Trafford in what could be looked back on as an important game in the battle for a European place. A third arrival could really hand Postecoglou's squad a boost and they may yet get that after Kalvin Phillips' loan fee price tag was revealed.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Spurs will have to pay between £5m and £6m to sign Phillips on loan this month and the North London club could yet make their move ahead of the likes of Juventus, with the player on their list of targets.

Former Spurs scout Bryan King reported the news on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, saying: "Personally, if they are looking for a central midfielder, and there has been a lot of talk, I’d be looking at Phillips at Man City. I mean £5million or £6million for a loan – I’d certainly be looking at that. He has the kind of energy that Ange [Postecoglou] likes.”

"Excellent" Phillips can revive career with Spurs move

It may well turn out to be a month centred around reviving careers at Spurs, with Werner looking to get back on track in North London and Phillips potentially hoping to do the same. The Manchester City midfielder has never really been handed a consistent opportunity at the Etihad and appears to need a move. This season, Phillips' game time hasn't increased even in the absence of Rodri at times, playing just 318 minutes in all competitions and starting just two games.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

At his best, Phillips could still perform to the levels that saw him earn the praise of England manager Gareth Southgate, who said:

“He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team. We felt he could play an important role with us.

“To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him. He’s a very, very good player and he’s been a really important part of this – we’re 16 games unbeaten [in regulation time] now and he’s been a huge part of that.”

Injured Alzarri Joseph likely to miss remainder of IPL

Mumbai Indians’ fast bowler dislocated his right arm while fielding in Saturday’s fixture against Rajasthan Royals

Alzarri Joseph is unlikely to be seen in action for Mumbai Indians for the foreseeable future after picking up an injury during Saturday’s game against Rajasthan Royals. ESPNcricinfo understands that Joseph has a tear in his right arm, which he dislocated while diving on the field, and will miss the remainder of the tournament.Joseph came into the IPL as a replacement for New Zealand’s Adam Milne, who didn’t arrive in India at all because of a swollen heel. Milne had been bought at the December auction for for INR 75 lakh ($104,000 approx), and Joseph was brought in for the same amount in accordance with IPL rules. This has been a difficult year for Joseph already. Vettori: CSK have an aura in the big games

Big pictureAt its core, good sport is meant to shock us. To move us. To sweep us up in its awesomeness. Delhi Capitals weren’t supposed to come this far – they had never even won an IPL playoff match before last night. But here they are as cricket tries its hardest not to lag behind football, which is putting on such a wondrous spectacle in Europe.”I think we have an affinity to make things interesting,” Prithvi Shaw said after the breakneck finish on Wednesday. Capitals have this odd little habit of putting pressure on themselves even when the game seems done and dusted. Their opponents, meanwhile, have made it their business to be immune to pressure. To follow their captain’s lead and become high-functioning sportsiopaths. This is a lovely clash. It’s youth v experience. It’s a team learning to revel under pressure v a team that repels it. It has fun written all over it. So let’s just sit back, relax and enjoy what should be another wild night.Oh, and while we do that, maybe we could also think about the ones who couldn’t make it. Previous meetingCapitals came off quite the worse for wear, all out for 99 chasing 179 courtesy the CSK spinners.Strategy punt MS Dhoni is master of the endgame: 213 of his 405 runs this season have come from overs 18 to 20. Chris Morris is good at the death too: ten of his 13 wickets this IPL have come in overs 16 to 20. That match-up should get the South African in the XI. That and the fact that Dhoni hits every other Capitals bowler at a strike rate of 170 or more. Rishabh Pant always had the big-hitting thing down but now he’s starting to finish games. But for some reason, he hadn’t hit a six on the off side against fast bowling until last night. Maybe Dwayne Bravo, who has a favourable T20 head-to-head against the left-hander (25 off 20, one dismissal), could run with that; bowl wide of off stump to see what happens. Stats that matter CSK’s spinners have taken 55 wickets this IPL, the most by a team in a single season. And it hasn’t been a one-man show either: Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja have all picked up 12-plus wickets. They will be very keen to have a go at the Capitals middle-order. The Nos. 4 to 7 have averaged only 20.5, third-worst among all teams this year. CSK have batting issues as well, in their top order. Shane Watson’s average of 14.6 in the Powerplay is the second-lowest for an opener in the history of the IPL. And, as a result of that, the team has rarely had a solid foundation to build an innings. Trent Boult is genius. But it’s not always been apparent in the IPL, where he averages 53.7 runs per wicket in Powerplay and concedes at 10.7 runs per over at the death, two phases where a fast bowler is expected to deliver for the team. The average score in Vizag in T20Is and IPL matches since 2013 is 148. And based on the Eliminator, spin could play a big part: economy rate of 6 as opposed to 9.6 for fast bowling

Everton in the mix to seal Ramazani transfer swoop – report

Everton are one of a number of top clubs battling to sign an "explosive" attacking player who they have already contacted in the past, according to a fresh transfer update.

Everton takeover & transfer news

The Blues have so much to tackle at the moment both on and off the pitch, with Sean Dyche no doubt desperate to be able to simply focus on performances and results. The ten-point deduction has been handled well so far, with Everton getting themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone, but further punishments could still be coming their way, according to recent updates.

There are also issues surrounding the takeover of the club by 777 Partners, with doubts continuing to emerge over their credentials, so there is understandable reason for unease within the fanbase.

One thing that could create some much-needed positivity is new signings in the January transfer window, and Everton have been linked with plenty of players in recent weeks. Kalvin Phillips is a wanted man ahead of a likely loan move away from Manchester City this month, and the Merseysiders are seen as one of the clubs who could snap him up.

Brentford's Frank Onyeka is another possible target for Everton before January reaches its conclusion, while West Brom youngster Tom Fellows is also a name who has been thrown into the hat.

Everton want to sign Largie Ramazani

According to a new update from Spanish media (via Sport Witness), Everton are fighting other clubs for the signing of Largie Ramazani, with the 22-year-old potentially leaving Almeria in the near future.

UD Almeria forward Largie Ramazani.

Only earlier this month, the Blues were reported to have made contact with the Belgian over a move to Goodison Park, and it doesn't look as though their interest has gone away. This latest rumour suggests that Almeria "could be satisfied by closing his sale in the coming days", as long as a bid of €8m (£6.8m) comes their way.

Ramazani could be a strong January addition for Everton, adding quality in attacking areas and invariably taking up a left-sided role, allowing him to battle with the likes of Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil for playing time. This season, he has six goal contributions (two goals and four assists) in 11 La Liga starts, as well as an overall tally of 20 goals and eight assists in 118 appearances for his current club.

Meanwhile, football talent scout Jacek Kulig is someone who rates the youngster highly as a player, saying of him recently:

"Explosive winger, electric pace & acceleration, superb dribbling skills & close control. Likes to play a direct style, dynamic & very positive with the ball, likes to make effective off-the-shoulder runs, counter-attacking weapon. 'The Mini-Vinicius'."

Report now shares new update out of Everton on points deduction

This could be big news for Sean Dyche.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 19, 2024

This really highlights the weapons that Ramazani has in his armoury, and if Everton could beat others to his signature, he could be an inspired signing who improves with age for some time to come.

Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of World Cup, Rishabh Pant confirmed as replacement

The hairline fracture the India opener suffered on his left thumb while batting against Australia hasn’t healed as well as expected

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Jun-2019Shikhar Dhawan’s World Cup has come to end midway through India’s campaign. The opening batsman suffered a hairline fracture to his left thumb during his century against Australia on June 9 and hasn’t recovered well enough to play the tournament.Rishabh Pant, who was rushed in as a cover by the BCCI on June 11, two days after Dhawan suffered the blow, and trained with the Indian squad in Manchester ahead of the Pakistan match, has been approved by the ICC as Dhawan’s replacement following a formal request by the BCCI.Dhawan was present in Southampton today during the Indian training session, with his left hand wrapped in bandage. According to the BCCI, Dhawan’s hand is expected to be in cast beyond the World Cup, which ends on July 14.Speaking at a media briefing, India team manager Sunil Subramaniam read from a note: “Shikhar has a fracture at the base of his first metacarpal on his left hand [thumb]. Following several specialist opinions, he will remain in a cast until July, mid-July, which rules him out of the ICC World Cup 2019.””I feel emotional to announce that I will no longer be a part of #CWC19. Unfortunately, the thumb won’t recover on time. But the show must go on,” Dhawan tweeted a while after the announcement. It was an unfortunate blow for Dhawan, and the team, considering it was only their second group match after winning the opening fixture against South Africa. The injury took place while Dhawan was hit in his gloves by a short Pat Cummins delivery. Dhawan carried on batting and scored a century, which earned him the Man of the Match award as India won by 36 runs. However, he did not field during the Australia innings. He travelled to Leeds to meet a surgeon after that, where the fracture was diagnosed. The Indian selectors opted to take time on the matter and not name a replacement immediately following a positive appraisal from the team’s medical staff led by physio Patrick Farhart.Another significant factor behind the reluctance of the selectors and the team management to name a replacement in a hurry was Dhawan’s record at various global tournaments. Dhawan was the highest scorer in each of the last five multi-team (five-plus teams) ODI tournaments for India: Champions Trophy 2013, Asia Cup 2014, World Cup 2015, Champions Trophy 2017 and Asia Cup 2018.Against Australia, where he batted deep into the innings, the left-handed Dhawan had blunted the Australian slow bowlers, including legspinner Adam Zampa. After the washout against New Zealand in Nottingham in the third match, Indian captain Virat Kohli underlined Dhawan’s importance to the team. “We want to hold him back, keep him here, because he wants to play. I think that kind of mindset will help in healing the injury as well as he really wants to play,” Kohli had told the host broadcaster on June 14 while discussing the team’s plans vis-à-vis Dhawan.Pant’s inclusion, meanwhile, didn’t come as a surprise. A debate had erupted when Pant did not figure in the original 15-man World Cup squad. Eminent cricketing minds like Ricky Ponting, Pant’s coach at Delhi Capitals in the IPL, felt the Indian selectors might have missed out on an X-factor player by ignoring the 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman. Instead, Vijay Shankar and Dinesh Karthik had been picked ahead of Pant and Ambati Rayudu, who was part of the squad in the last series India had played before the World Cup.Pant, who has only played five ODIs (93 runs in four innings, at an average of 23.25 and strike rate of 130.08), was, however, named as one of the five stand-by players by the selectors. Being a left-hander, a very explosive one at that, the selectors felt Pant was a good replacement for Dhawan and could be fitted into the middle-order with KL Rahul now being pushed up as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner.

Deadline Day signing at Rangers could see Dessers replacement arrive

Glasgow Rangers face their busiest January deadline day for quite some time as the clock ticks down in what is the final chance for Philippe Clement to bolster his squad ahead of a hectic few months.

Fabio Silva and Mohammed Diomande have already joined the Gers, while Oscar Cortes looks set to be the third signing made by the club and things are looking promising.

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

Could there perhaps be some outgoings too? As the Ibrox side may have to balance the books if they hope to spring a surprise or two before the window slams shut this evening.

Rangers deadline day activity

While most of the recent talk has been about bringing a few new players to Rangers, there have been rumours linking players with a move away from the club.

Jose Cifuentes looks set to join Brazilian outfit Cruzeiro having turned down a move to Turkey and the move makes sense after the midfielder has failed to shine in Scotland since joining last summer.

The latest exit rumour is even more surprising than that of Cifuentes leaving, as Cyriel Dessers has now been linked with a move abroad.

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.

The striker cost £4.5m just a few months ago, but according to prominent Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, two Serie A clubs are looking to bring the player back to Italy before the window closes.

The two clubs are Hellas Verona and Torino, who are both eyeing up a swoop for the former Feyenoord frontman, and the links have certainly come out of the blue.

The 29-year-old has scored in his last three competitive matches, and it looks as though he is gaining some momentum which could finally see him shine in Glasgow following a difficult start.

Clement will surely only consider selling Dessers if two conditions are met. Firstly, he will be looking to recoup the majority, if not all, of the £4.5m the Gers shelled out on him.

Secondly, he will only depart if the Belgian manager has a replacement lined up, as this could leave just Silva as the only fully fit centre-forward.

Could these exit links for Dessers perhaps indicate that the Light Blues are close to securing a deal for another striker? With Lawrence Shankland high on the priority list, he could make an ideal replacement for the former Cremonese forward.

Rangers search for a new striker

Shankland has been perennially linked with a move to Glasgow since the window first opened and Clement is clearly hoping to take advantage of the fact his contract expires at the end of next season.

Hearts offered him an extension at the start of the month, yet it was reportedly rejected. However, according to Sky Sports (via the Scottish Sun), the Jambos have since offered him fresh terms in the hope that he will accept and extend his stay at Tynecastle.

Lawrence Shankland for Scotland.

If he signs, it will rule out a move to Rangers, but the longer he leaves Hearts waiting, it gives the Light Blues an ideal chance to make their approach and perhaps land him for a cheaper price than previously mentioned.

The stats that show why Lawrence Shankland would be a good signing for Rangers

It is no secret that Shankland is a supporter of Rangers and this will likely prove to be a key aspect regarding if any deal is to go through before the winter window deadline.

A move to the League Cup holders has even been endorsed by former Gers icon and captain Barry Ferguson, who said:

“Let’s start with Lawrence Shankland who catches my eye every time I see him play for Hearts.

Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland.

“This guy has improved his game to such an extent over the last couple of years that I’m surprised he’s not been snapped up already but, watching him on Wednesday, I saw a ready made Rangers centre forward.”

High praise indeed, and if anyone knows about what it takes to make it at Rangers, it is Ferguson.

Since arriving back in Scotland last summer, Shankland has netted 47 goals in just 77 matches, working out at a goal every 1.75 matches, quite a stunning return and proving that he could be a solid acquisition for the Gers.

The 28-year-old has also shone among his teammates at the Gorgie outfit this term, currently ranking first for goals and assists (14) in the top flight, while also leading the way for shots on target per game (1.4) and scoring frequency (a goal every 148 minutes) and this is for a team that do not have as many creative talents as Rangers.

With the likes of potential new signing Cortes, Todd Cantwell and Ross McCausland providing him with plenty of chances during matches, he could maintain or even surpass his current strike rate.

The 6 foot 1 striker was praised by former Gers goal machine Kris Boyd following his late effort which won the Edinburgh derby for Hearts late last year, lauding him as “unbelievable” and there is no doubt he could be a major success at the Ibrox side.

With Abdallah Sima and Danilo out with long-term injuries, it is clear that Clement needs another centre-forward heading into the final few months of the season and Shankland would fit the bill perfectly.

The fresh links regarding Dessers and a move away throw a spanner in the works, but I doubt there is a supporter who would not swap the Nigerian for Shankland before the window closes.

It remains to be seen what will occur throughout the final day of the winter transfer window, but there could potentially be a surprise or two along the way.

With Silva, Diomande and Cortes bolstering the first-team squad, Clement is certainly prioritising young talent as opposed to signing washed-up players looking to claim one final payday by signing for the club on a short-term deal.

This strategy may prove to be a big risk, but nobody ever wins anything by playing it safe and full trust will be placed in Clement ahead of the rest of the season.
