Guyana Amazon Warriors registered their second straight win with a dominant performance against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. With a strong start with the ball courtesy of spinners Chris Green and Shadab Khan, Warriors were able to control the Patriots’ batting through the middle overs in damp conditions, and restrict them to a total – 153 – that they chased down with seven balls to spare on the back of two half-century stands. Shimron Hetmyer’s 70 not-out off 47 led the way after Chandrapaul Hemraj’s 24-ball 39 had given them a brisk start. Patriots have now lost both their games.Guyana keep it tight at the startChris Green began well for Warriors after they elected to bowl. But in the second over, having kept the first five balls to six runs, Keemo Paul overstepped as he bowled Kjorn Ottley. The free-hit that followed was a four and also a no-ball. What should have been 9 for 1 at the end of the second over, ended up being 19 for 0 as the second free-hit went for four as well. But Ottley ran out of luck in the next over, as he took off for a run when Evin Lewis deflected the ball into the leg side and did not respond. Wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran put in the throw at the non-striker’s end to run him out.Keemo was out of the attack and spinners Green and Shadab Khan bowled five of the six Powerplay overs, giving barely anything to the batsmen. Lewis hit Green over his head off the back foot, but holed out to deep square off Shadab. Only 31 came from the Powerplay.A lot of fortune, a lot of dewDevon Thomas and Mohammad Hafeez had the task of rebuilding, and they managed to do that with a 54-run stand before Hafeez holed out to long-off against Shadab. There was little control during the partnership, despite its importance. Until the 16th over, almost all of Thomas’ boundaries came off the outside edge down at third man. Hafeez was also dropped at sweeper cover on an evening where despite keeping things quiet, the Warriors fielders were circumspect because of the dew.Keemo continued to have poor luck, edges off his bowling helping Thomas along before he clubbed Shadab for two sixes in a row,in the 16th over, to get past 50, his second in CPL. Keemo did, however, have Brathwaite caught at short midwicket for a second-ball duck – the dew going in the bowler’s favour this time, imparting extra skid as Brathwaite tried to pull. He could have had Fabian Allen caught at fine leg too, but the top edge didn’t quite carry and that ball also rolled into the boundary, another one of the nine fours that came behind the wicket.Thomas made 62 and was eventually caught at the midwickwet boundary in the 18th over, brilliantly by Shadab tearing to his left. In the last 14 balls from that point, Allen hit two delightful sixes, one carved over deep cover and one smacked wide of deep midwicket. His 33 of 19 and Alzarri Joseph’s unbeaten 10 off the last two balls helped Patriots to 153.Warriors start well againThe second innings began differently. Off the first ball, Brandon King drove Sheldon Cottrell past the stumps to pick up four. Chandrapaul Hemraj was equally dominant in front of the wicket, starting with an expert cut over cover off a short ball. He chipped Mohammad Hafeez neatly over extra over soon after, and then hit short bowling from legspinner Usama Mir over and wide of long-on in the space of three balls. Where Green and Shadab had turned the screws in the Powerplay, Hafeez and Usama were dismantled – their two overs went for a combined 28. Warriors made 55 in the Powerplay without losing a wicket. Usama didn’t bowl another over on the night. Some hiccups, but Hetmyer takes them throughAllen took a stunning catch flying to his right at point to dismiss Hemraj off Brathwaite, but Patriots didn’t take their other chances. As Thomas had earlier, Hetmyer, too, struggled for rhythm, missing a lot but also offering more chances than the former. He was involved in three mix-ups, two of them with King where either of them could have been dismissed at the non-striker’s end with plenty of time for the fielders at midwicket to get their throws in. Both opportunities were squandered.Shortly after he survived a third run-out chance, Hetmyer turned the tables on Joseph, who had caused him most trouble early in the innings. He lifted the fast bowler over mid-off, drove a full ball wide of long-on, and clobbered a short ball over the midwicket boundary to come close to his fifty. By the time he got it, captain Shoaib Malik was at the crease with him and the pair saw them through with an unbroken 64-run stand.

"Very talented" manager is Liverpool’s top target if Alonso chooses Bayern

Whilst those on the pitch attempt to hand Jurgen Klopp a fitting farewell in the form of a Premier League title, FSG's search for the next Liverpool manager is already underway. It's hardly a secret that Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso tops their current shortlist, but with Bayern Munich also interested in the Spaniard, the Reds have now reportedly identified a backup plan.

Next Liverpool manager

Liverpool have reportedly made contact for Alonso and are set to make the Bundesliga leaders an offer for their impressive manager. Things have recently become slightly more complicated, of course, due to the nterest of Bayern Munich. The European giants confirmed the news that they will be parting ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season and all directions have been pointing towards Alonso ever since.

It would be quite the move from Bayern if they were to lure the man potentially responsible for ending their reign of dominance in Germany's top flight into a summer switch. If that does turn out to be the case, then they could start a knock-on effect of managerial changes, with Liverpool likely turning to their next top target.

Liverpool's "special" £4m star is now worth 1175% more

Jurgen Klopp has shaped this rising talent into one of the Premier League’s most exciting prospects.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 23, 2024

According to The Independent's chief football reporter, Miguel Delaney, Liverpool's top Alonso alternative is Ruben Amorim, who has impressed at Sporting since 2020.

Ruben Amorim encourages his Sporting CP side from the sidelines.

The 39-year-old is one of the best young managers around and has restored Sporting's place competing at the top of Portuguese football in recent times, with his side currently sitting level on points with Benfica at the top of Liga Portugal.

With that said, whilst Alonso remains their top choice, Liverpool would be doing no harm in turning to Amorim if they fail to land their former midfielder this summer.

"Very talented" Amorim could bring Inacio with him

Whilst Amorim's preferred formation is a 3-4-3 and Klopp's is a 4-3-3, which has worked wonders at Anfield over the years, the Sporting boss likes to use a similar interchangeable front three threat as the current Liverpool boss. And this has seen the likes of Victor Gyokeres thrive. In fact, no player has managed more goal involvements in Europe's top seven leagues than the former Coventry City man so far this season.

Described as "very talented" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Amorim could also lure Liverpool target Goncalo Inacio to Anfield with him in what would be an ideal double swoop for the Reds. A player that they're reportedly targeting either way, the Sporting defender could slot straight into an Amorim system at Liverpool if both completed summer moves.

The 10 Tallest Football Players in the World in 2024 (Ranked)

For all their athletic ability and untold riches, football players tend to be pretty average when it comes to height, for sports stars at least. You don't tend to see many players exceeding 1.92m – or 6 foot 3 – and it usually becomes a talking point when they do.

For example, Peter Crouch was a great player in his own right, but he is remembered for being one of the tallest players we have ever seen. Put him up against a basketball player, however, and he is distinctly average – height-wise, that is.

So how tall can professional players get, and who are the tallest professional players in world football today?

With that in mind, we have created a list of the 10 tallest football players still playing the game today in 2024 using data from Transfermarkt.

10 Carlos Miguel (Corinthians) 2.04m (6 foot 7) – Goalkeeper

We're kicking off our list with a goalkeeper – there is going to be plenty of those – from South America, Brazil to be exact.

Carlos Miguel comes in at a massive 2.04m, or just about 6 foot 7, and we say massive regarding the rest of us. Compared to the rest of the players on this list, he's a good one to two inches shorter.

Miguel began his career in Internacional's reserve side before spending a couple of seasons on loan with Santa Cruz and Boa Esporte before making a permanent move to Brazilian giants Corinthians in August 2021.

He isn't the side's number-one keeper, but he has made eight first-team appearances this year and kept six clean sheets in the process, which is pretty good going for a backup.

9 Armin Spahic (TOSK Tesanj) 2.05m (6 foot 8) – Centre-back

The second man to make it onto our list is Austrian centre-back Armin Spahic, who is the first of three players to come in at 2.05m, or about 6 foot 8.

The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade in Bosnia-Herzegovina for second-tier side TOSK Tesanj, who he only joined in September of last year from fellow Bosnian second-tier side OFK Gradina Srebrenik.

The Austrian looks to be enjoying a relatively successful first season with his new club as he has featured in the starting XI 11 times so far this season and has even found himself on the scoresheet on one occasion – not bad for a new defender.

8 Milan Ziric (Vorwarts Steyr) 2.05m (6 foot 8) – Centre-back

We've got another Austrian centre-back measuring 6 foot 8 inches coming in next, although instead of playing in the Bosnian second division, he has stayed closer to home.

Milan Ziric plays for Austrian third-tier side Vorwarts Steyr, joining them in July last year from fourth-tier side SPG Wels II.

Like his compatriot in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ziric is having a great season with his new side, starting 12 games so far this season and helping them climb to fourth in the table – as things stand.

7 Lucas Bergstrom (Chelsea) 2.05m (6 foot 8) – Goalkeeper

Chelsea goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom.

The last 6 foot 8 player on the list is our second goalkeeper and the first player to ply his trade on these shores, in the Premier League, no less.

Lucas Berstrom is currently a Chelsea player and has been ever since his move from Finnish side Turun Palloseura during the 2018/19 season.

He spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Peterborough United and made 28 first-team appearances for the posh, in which he kept nine clean sheets.

He hasn't made a first-team appearance for the Blues yet, but he was on the team's preseason tour of America and has one international cap to his name.

6 Kevin Gadella (FC Utrecht II) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

We have reached the players on this list who tower above pretty much everyone else on a football pitch and probably wouldn't look amiss on a basketball court.

Kevin Gadella plys his trade in his home country of the Netherlands with FC Utrecht II – their under 21 team – and he has been having a mixed season so far this year.

He has featured in 13 games for the club, and he has let in 24 goals and kept five clean sheets so far, and with the team down in 19th place, he'll surely be looking to improve as the campaign continues.

5 Kjell Scherpen (SK Sturm Graz) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

We're back in the Premier League for the next one, well, sort of.

Kjell Scherpen is currently on loan to Austrian first-tier side Sturm Graz, but his parent club are Brighton & Hove Albion, back in the English top-flight.

The young Dutchman joined the Seagulls from Eredivisie giants Ajax in the summer of 2021 for an undisclosed fee before spending time in Belgium and the Netherlands on loan before ending up in Austria this season.

He's been having a cracking season this year, having conceded just 32 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, as well as keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

It would be great to see him make it in the Premier League one day, just to see how some of the shorter strikers cope with him.

Ranking the 10 tallest Premier League players for 2023/2024 season

FFC takes a detailed look at the tallest players to ever ply their trade in the Premier League.

BySean Markus Clifford Oct 4, 2023 4 Denys Tvardovskyi (Shakhtar Donetsk) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

The fourth spot gives us our fourth goalkeeper on the bounce – we did say there were a lot of them on this list – and it's Shakhtar Donetsk's backup, Denys Tvardovskyi.

The 20-year-old has been with the Ukrainian giants for his entire professional career but has yet to be given the opportunity to start a game for the first team, let alone an appearance off the bench.

However, he has started eight games in the UEFA Youth League for the U19s, conceding 12 goals but keeping three clean sheets. He has also earned three caps for the Ukrainian U19 side and one for the U21s.

We reckon it won't be long until we see him in the starting XI for Shakhtar.

3 Isaak Toure (FC Lorient) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Centre-back

The third spot on the list gives us a much-needed break from the wall-to-wall goalkeepers of the last four entries – my apologies to the union – with 20-year-old centre-back Isaak Toure claiming the bronze.

The Gonesse-born titan stands at 2.06m – 6 foot 9 – and currently plys his trade for Ligue 1 side FC Lorient after completing a move from French giants Marseille earlier this summer.

He's having a reasonably successful season with the men in orange this year, appearing in 18 games and helping his team stay out of the relegation zone, for now at least.

2 Tomas Holy (Carlisle United) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

The penultimate player on our list is another goalkeeper who makes his living in the English leagues, Carlisle United's Tomas Holy.

Like the four players before him, the six-cap Czech international comes in at a whopping 6 foot 9 and has been a regular in the EFL ever since his 2017 move to Gillingham from Prague outfit Sparta Prague.

He would make over 100 appearances for the Gills before moving to Ipswich Town in 2019. A couple of loan moves to Cambridge United and Port Vale followed before he joined Carlisle on a permanent contract in the summer of 2022.

Since moving north, Holy has become one of the most important members of the first team and has made 73 appearances to date.

1 Kyle Hudlin (Huddersfield Town) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Striker

Right, here we are, number one, and we have saved the best until last, a 6 foot 9 striker, yes, a striker.

Just think back to how big Peter Crouch used to look against regular defenders, and then add another two inches. That is how tall Huddersfield Town striker Kyle Hudlin is.

The 23-year-old forward started his career with Solihull before moving to Solihull Moors and finally to Huddersfield Town in July 2022. Since then, he has spent six months on loan with AFC Wimbledon before returning to the Terriers, where he still is this season.

However, he hasn't exactly proved his worth since joining as he's currently on loan at League One side Burton Albion.

However, the talent is undoubtedly there, as he was a real handful at Solihull Moors. Just have a look for yourselves.

BCB makes it mandatory for BPL teams to field a 140-plus quick and a legspinner

There is no official word on the salaries for domestic cricketers yet

Mohammad Isam11-Oct-2019

BCB

Each of the seven Bangladesh Premier League teams for the upcoming season of the T20 tournament must have an overseas quick bowler who bowls above 140kph and a legspinner, who has to bowl four overs in each game, the Bangladesh Cricket Board director Mahbubul Anam has announced. But he didn’t provide any clarity on how much the domestic cricketers would be paid. Khaled Mahmud, another BCB director, had recently said that the board, which has taken over the running of the BPL from the franchises, would try to match what the players receive as match fees for T20Is, but there has been no official confirmation of that. It’s important to remember that if a top domestic player takes part in all the BPL matches, the amount he makes will still be well short of what he would have made in the BPL previously.”The players shouldn’t be worried about money,” Anam said. “We are holding this tournament by keeping them in mind. Salary isn’t very important, but it will definitely be respectable.”Each team must also have an overseas coach, physiotherapist and trainer, while local coaches can only work as assistants to the head coaches. Anam also said that each team must appoint a BCB director as the team director.ESPNcricinfo understands that the order about the 140kph quick bowler and legspinner has come from the Bangladesh team management, which, Anam said, has been concerned about the side’s ability against the two kinds of bowlers when playing internationally.”BCB wants this BPL to be about improving Bangladesh’s cricketers in T20s, so we want to make sure that our batsmen and bowlers get enough opportunities [against quicks and legspinners], something that was not possible when it was a franchise-based BPL,” Anam said. The BCB has reportedly received 390-plus registrations from players to be included in the draft, and there have also been requests put in by several coaches. With the BCB stipulating a sponsor for each team, they can bring overseas players from outside the draft too. Paying foreigners high salaries, however, might not sit well with domestic players, especially as the BCB’s message for the 2019-20 BPL is to be fully focused on the local talent. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the next edition of the BPL will not be a franchise-run affair and, instead, be owned by the BCB following a clash between the board and six of the seven existing team owners, Dhaka Dynamites the only exception.

Clement must replace Dessers with Rangers star in different role

Glasgow Rangers are back in action in the Scottish Premiership this weekend as they travel away to face Dundee on Sunday with the chance to remain top of the table.

The Light Blues are currently two points ahead of Celtic, who play against St. Johnstone on Saturday, in the division and a win would ensure that they remain first, irrespective of how their rivals get on.

Philippe Clement's side do come into this match, however, off the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Benfica in the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday night.

Rafa Silva, who was onside by the tightest of margins, scored the only goal of the game for the away side, who progressed through to the quarter-finals with a 3-2 win on aggregate.

The Belgian head coach could now look to make some changes from his starting XI for that match after the Gers struggled to create chances and cause problems for the Portuguese outfit at Ibrox.

Cyriel Dessers had a howler up front with a poor display for the Light Blues and Clement must now relocate Fabio Silva into a centre-forward position to replace him against Dundee.

Cyriel Dessers' stats against Benfica at Ibrox

The experienced striker was selected to lead the line for the Gers in a huge European match under the lights at Ibrox but failed to provide the energy or quality needed to match the occasion.

Dessers cut an isolated figure at the top end of the pitch as his lack of mobility meant that he was not able to hold onto the ball or cause problems for the Benfica defence with runs in behind or down the channels to create room for his teammates.

The 29-year-old marksman only had 18 touches of the ball in 77 minutes of the game, despite Rangers having 65% of the possession, which suggests that he did not do enough to get involved in the match, by either making runs to create options to pass to or dropping deep to get on the ball.

Cyriel Dessers

His teammates did, however, create 0.28 xG (Expected Goals) worth of chances for him in front of goal but both of his efforts were blocked by defenders. His best opportunity came when Scott Wright played him through in the box during the first half but the striker was too slow to get the shot away, and it was blocked relatively easily.

The 6 foot 1 forward also struggled in the air as Benfica's players beat him in five of their six aerial duels throughout the match, which shows that he did not do enough to win flicks-ons or knock the ball down to his fellow attackers to retain possession for the team.

His howler at Ibrox against the Portuguese giants was not a one-off, either, as the former Cremonese forward also struggled in the first leg earlier this month.

Cyriel Dessers' stats in the first leg against Benfica

The Nigeria international also started the first leg against Benfica and struggled to make an impact in or out of possession for the Scottish giants.

Rangers secured a fantastic 2-2 draw in Portugal, thanks to goals from Tom Lawrence and Dujon Sterling, but Dessers' display at the top end of the pitch was less-than-memorable.

As you can see in the table above, the wasteful centre-forward was dominated by Benfica's defenders as they won six of their eight duels against him.

Dessers also offered virtually nothing at the top end of the pitch as he did not create a single chance, did not register a single effort on goal, or complete any of his attempted dribbles.

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers.

These statistics show that the former Serie A dud did not make an impact in either leg against Benfica, as the Light Blues were knocked out of Europe.

The Rangers number nine has zero goals and zero assists in his last five appearances in all competitions, which includes his last two outings in the Premiership, and should now be ditched from the starting XI.

Why Fabio Silva should play through the middle

With Kemar Roofe's last start having been in October 2023, Silva may be the only viable first-team alternative to Dessers in the centre-forward position.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee, whose work rate has been dubbed "infectious" by Connor Goldson, has been deployed on the left flank in recent weeks, including as a starter against Benfica on Thursday, but should now be relocated to striker to replace the Nigerian lightweight.

Todd Cantwell and Rabbi Matondo's respective returns from injury mean that the Light Blues boss does have options to call upon in the wide areas, as one of them – or Ross McCausland – could take Silva's place on the wing, which would free the 6 foot 1 ace up to play through the middle.

Fabio Silva

Whilst Dessers has zero goals and assists combined in his last five games, the Portuguese youngster has produced one goal in his last two outings, and two goals and one penalty won in his last six.

He also, rather harshly, did not get credited with the assist for Sterling's goal against Benfica in Portugal, when his ball across the box took a slight deflection off a defender and dropped for the midfielder to find the back of the net from close range.

Had that counted as an assist, Silva would have four goals, one assist, and one penalty won, in his last 11 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants.

His most recent strike came against Hibernian in the SFA Cup last weekend as he, as you can see in the clip above, brilliantly worked room to find the bottom corner.

The 21-year-old loanee has been in impressive form in front of goal, whilst Dessers has struggled badly of late, and that is why Clement should unleash him as the starting number nine against Dundee.

Sunday's opponents have conceded the joint-most goals in the league (50) and their struggles defensively could present Silva with an opportunity to continue his goalscoring run if the manager relocates him to the striker position.

Aaron Finch not happy with 20-minute innings break in rain-hit game

The match was abandoned 11 balls before the second innings constituted a game, with Australia well ahead in the chase

Andrew McGlashan03-Nov-2019Australia captain Aaron Finch has questioned the need for a 20-minute interval during the rain-ruined T20I against Pakistan at the SCG. The match was abandoned 11 balls before the second innings constituted a game, with Australia well ahead in the chase.Australia were 0 for 41 after 3.1 overs when rain returned and there was no chance for the match to resume before the cut-off time. Pakistan’s innings had been interrupted by a lengthy stoppage after 12.4 overs and then resumed for 14 deliveries before the standard break between innings was taken.”If you’re cutting overs off the game and you still have a 20-minute break, it doesn’t make much sense to me,” Finch said in his post-match TV interview. “When you lose a few overs and then you still have a 20-minute break… I thought that was really interesting. But it’s part of the rules and you can’t do much about it.”Getty Images

The ICC playing conditions give the match referee – in this case Javagal Srinath – the discretion to reduce the interval to 10 minutes but that was not exercised.Clause 11.4.2 of the playing conditions states: “… following a lengthy delay or interruption prior to the completion of the innings of the team batting first, the Match Referee may, at his discretion, reduce the interval between innings from 20 minutes to not less than 10 minutes.”Vice-captain Alex Carey said that Australia had approached the match officials about what the length of the interval would be and were told that standard break would remain.”We asked the question, what the changeover would have been, and it remains the same so we were aware of that and can’t change it,” Carey said. “The boys did a great job getting the start, just a shame it was probably five minutes too late.”It’s disappointing to be so close, but it’s part of the game. It’s one of things we can’t change. The spectators would have liked a result, but we understand it. Good or bad, it’s part of it.”Had there been time to resume the game for 11 more deliveries to make it a match, the five-over target would have been 39 so Australia were already ahead of that mark. Had the rain not arrived, Pakistan could have fought back with wickets but this was certainly a case of them escaping what was shaping up as a defeat following Finch’s onslaught against Mohammad Irfan – his second over cost 26.Other than captain Babar Azam they couldn’t find much impetus with the bat, although the stoppage after 12.4 overs worked against them as they had to restart for just 14 more deliveries.”If the match had continued for 20 overs, we should have come up with 160-170. It really effected our team plan,” Mohammad Rizwan said. “We lost early wickets but we had wickets in hand for the last few overs, then the rain came.”
