Liverpool reject Nat Phillips offer as Edwards demands 100% bid increase

Sky Sports have shared a key update regarding the future of Liverpool defender Nat Phillips, following a rejected bid on Monday.

Phillips has no future at Liverpool

It is easy to forget that the 27-year-old is still on the books at Anfield, considering how little he has featured for the Merseysiders of late. In fact, his last appearance came against Wolves in the FA Cup in January 2023, with Jurgen Klopp not considering him an important player.

Last season, Phillips had stints on loan at both Celtic and Cardiff City – Leeds also wanted him at one point – and with only one year remaining on his current Liverpool deal, the club have a big decision to make this summer. If they don't sell him now, they will essentially lose him on a free transfer next year, so cashing in at this point makes total sense.

Nat Phillips in action for Celtic.

The Reds will want to ensure that the Englishman goes for the right amount of money, however, with losing him on the cheap a clear negative, especially as Klopp once described him as "absolutely insane" after some sterling performances towards the end of the 2020/21 season.

Phillips performed admirably in the absence of the likes of injured trio Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, helping Liverpool secure a third-place finish in the Premier League, which earned the 'Bolton Baresi' an almost cult hero status in the process.

Liverpool reject bid for Nat Phillips

Now, Sky Sports have claimed that Liverpool have turned down a £4m offer for Phillips from Turkish side Trabzonspor, as numerous Championship sides also circle for his signature. The Reds want double that amount, as Michael Edwards demands an increase to £8m.

"Liverpool have been busy, rejecting a £4m offer from Trabzonspor for the services of Nat Phillips. They value him at around £8m and appear to be sticking to that. There's also a lot of interest from a number of Championship clubs."

This summer really does feel like the right time for Phillips to leave Liverpool, considering Arne Slot surely doesn't consider him a key part of his plans at Anfield. In Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah, the Dutchman already has three strong centre-back options, and it would be a huge surprise if at least one new player in that area didn't arrive to bolster the squad depth this summer, too.

At 27, it is time for the £65,000-a-week Liverpool man to settle at another club, rather than have a nomadic career jumping between clubs on loan, and there is no reason why he can't be a solid signing for a lower-ranked Premier League side, or perhaps a team pushing for promotion from the Championship.

Liverpool now interested in "great" ace dumped out of Copa America by Nunez

The Reds have reportedly joined the race.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 7, 2024

Phillips will depart as a popular figure when he does leave, with superior players loved far less than him in the past, and some memorable moments have come his way, not least the brilliant Cruyff turn that bamboozled Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a Champions League clash back in 2021.

South Africa vs England: Will ODI series still go ahead after Covid-19 outbreak?

Uncertainty reigns after Paarl cancellation with possibility England party could face 10 days in quarantine

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2020

It remains to be seen whether the teams take the field again at Newlands•Getty Images

What is the current state of the tour?
Having completed the three-match T20I series with relatively little drama, issues surfaced ahead of the first ODI, scheduled for Friday in Cape Town. The game was initially postponed, after a positive Covid-19 test in the South Africa squad, and the Newlands fixture pushed back. However, two more positive tests among staff at the Vineyard Hotel, where both teams are staying, led to Sunday’s ODI in Paarl being delayed and then cancelled.Have there been any further positive tests?
The England camp subsequently revealed that they had returned two “unconfirmed” positives after a round of retesting on Saturday evening. These are awaiting independent ratification, after which the ECB will consult with CSA about the fate of the tour – although no decisions are expected until Monday.Could the remaining ODIs still be played?
In theory, yes. The rearranged fixture at Newlands has already been moved again, and won’t now be played on Monday. But should England’s two unconfirmed positives come back negative, then it is possible the ODIs could be played as back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday. What happens if England’s two positive cases are confirmed?
The England players and staff are currently self-isolating in accordance with South African guidelines. Should the presence of Covid-19 be confirmed, those who tested positive would be required to remain quarantined at the hotel for a 10-day period, along with anyone deemed to have come into close contact with them. That would in turn mean missing the chartered flight that is due to take England home on Thursday.Would that have any knock-on effects?
Aside from unwanted stress and missing out on family time in the run-up to Christmas, some players might find deals to play in the Big Bash League at risk. Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Lewis Gregory, Liam Livingstone and Jason Roy are due to fly to Australia at the end of the series, but already face serving a 14-day quarantine period on arrival. With the BBL starting on Thursday and running through until early February, delays to their departure from South Africa could curtail availability for the tournament. For those players who are also likely to be in the England Test squad, there is also the looming prospect of a tour to Sri Lanka at the start of next year, scheduled to depart on January 2. If their return to the UK was put back until December 17, they would have little more than two weeks at home before being asked to travel to another bio-bubble for the two-Test series. How did individuals contract Covid-19 in a bio-secure environment?
This remains unclear. Although South Africa produced two positive tests ahead of the T20I series, those infections likely occurred before the squad came together. Thursday’s positive was “a more recent case that occurred within the bio-secure environment,” according to CSA medical officer, Dr Shuaib Manjra. CSA said subsequently it had investigated and discounted the possibility of a breach of protocol by the players. However, it is understood that not all of the hotel staff have been staying on site. What might be the implications for South Africa’s summer?
The whole tour was worth around US$4.2m in broadcasting money to CSA, and the loss of half of the fixtures would mean a significant financial hit. Equally damaging, confirmation of a bio-security breach could cast doubt on whether upcoming tours by Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia will go ahead as planned. Will there be any impact on the World Cup Super League?
If the series is cancelled due to the coronavirus, there is the potential for the three fixtures – worth 10 points each – to be rearranged (although few windows in which to squeeze another tour). In the case that the games go down as abandonments, then points would be shared, with South Africa and England taking 15 each.

Niroshan Dickwella happy to 'play situation' for Sri Lanka as wait for Test hundred goes on

Wicketkeeper-batsman says Sri Lanka have a better chance of success against England than in 2018-19

Andrew Fidel Fernando11-Jan-2021

Niroshan Dickwella has yet to reach three figures despite making 15 Test half-centuries•AFP

Seventy Test innings in, Niroshan Dickwella is still hunting for that big one.Way back in 2014, when he had barely graduated from the Under-19 team, Dickwella began his Test career with a sparkling 72 off 116 balls, against a South Africa attack featuring Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander. But there have been only 15 half-centuries so far – reflected in an overall average of 30.65, and third place on the list of most runs in Tests without reaching three figures.Following several years of improvement with the gloves, Dickwella is now considered by many to be the best wicketkeeper in the country. With Sri Lanka recently having batted him at No. 6 instead of No. 7, Dickwella hopes improvements in batting output are on the horizon too.”I sometimes get 30 or 40, or get past that and get 60 or 70, but haven’t been able to hit a hundred yet,” he said, three days out from the first Test of the series against England. “A lot of times, I’m batting with the tail. In the previous series that changed – Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga were batting below. But I wasn’t able to get many runs there.”But what I’m thinking of is what kinds of runs the team needs from me in any situation. There have been occasions where I’ve had the chance to hit a 80 or 90, or even get to 100. But there are other times the 40 that I’ve scored helps us win. I will keep playing to those situations.”Related

Dickwella has often copped criticism for his unconventional strokes – the reverse sweeps, scoops, and ramps that are his strength in limited-overs cricket. He doesn’t think the road to being a better batsman includes him shelving these shots. But he does want to get better at playing them.”The shots that I get out playing are the same ones that help me score runs,” he said. “It’s the execution that’s the problem sometimes. But I’m working on how to change gears in the innings, to start scoring more quickly or slowly as the situation demands. And also on how to target specific bowlers instead of going after everyone. I’ve been working with the batting coach on that, and I hope I can get a big score soon.”On the subject of the team England have brought this time, Dickwella felt Sri Lanka probably had a better chance on this occasion than they did the last time England toured, in late 2018. On that occasion, England trounced Sri Lanka 3-0, so it’s not much to say that the home side could possibly improve on that scoreline. But Dickwella nevertheless thought an England side missing some key players seemed a more manageable prospect.”Compared to the 2018 series we have a better chance this time, because there’s no Jofra Archer or Ben Stokes and they are missing a few other players. We just have to play our normal game and do what we usually do in Galle.”

£100k-per-week Arsenal ace agrees to join new club as they chase quick deal

A member of Mikel Arteta's squad at Arsenal is said to have already agreed to join West Ham, and they're pushing to completely seal a deal by the end of this week.

Players who could be sold or loaned out by Arsenal

A quartet of senior first team squad players in Cedric Soares, Mohamed Elneny, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares have already departed the Emirates Stadium, but many more could well follow them.

Arteta sees £51k-per-week ace as a potential bargain signing for Arsenal

The Spaniard thinks he represents good market value.

Soares and Elneny waved goodbye to London Colney after their contracts expired on June 30, with both men yet to find a new club. Meanwhile, Arsenal agreed a deal with Sevilla to loan them Lokonga for a season, which includes a £10 million option to buy him outright next summer.

Tavares joined Lazio on an initial loan deal as well, but the Portuguese has already put pen to paper on a five-year deal due to the fact his purchase will become mandatory next year for around £7.5 million.

These transfers have freed up more space in Arteta's squad and provided some relief for the wage bill, though it remains the case that Arsenal could offload a few more interesting names before summer deadline day on August 30.

Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah, Thomas Partey, Aaron Ramsdale and Kieran Tierney are all being regularly tipped to leave the club as well, with Arsenal reportedly open to selling for the right offers.

Aston Villa transfer target Emile Smith-Rowe in action for Arsenal.

Partey has entered the final 11 months of his contract and played just 14 Premier League games last season, while Arteta has decided Tierney is not in his plans after the Scotsman spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad.

Another player attracting interest, and who finds himself on the fringes of Arteta's squad, is Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson. The 24-year-old started just one top flight match last season, making 14 out of his 15 league appearances off the bench.

Nelson agrees to join West Ham as they chase imminent Arsenal deal

The £100,000-per-week ace will find it difficult to secure regular game time ahead of the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and any potential new forward signings – so perhaps the time is right for him to find a new home.

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

According to TEAMtalk, that landing spot could well be across London at West Ham. Julen Lopetegui's side are believed to be pursuing the forward with real intent, and have made the best offer to him out of any other interested side.

They add that Nelson has agreed to join West Ham from Arsenal, and the Hammers are pushing to seal a deal for him by the end of this week. There is no mention of a price tag in the report, but other media sources have claimed Nelson could cost around £25-30 million.

Arteta has called Nelson a "special" player before, and he's seriously impressed in flashes. However, given the competition for minutes at Arsenal, a move to West Ham could be ideal given the player gets to remain in the English capital.

Alongside Osula: Newcastle could sign Isak 2.0 in "frightening" £45m talent

After weeks of no activity in the transfer market, it appears as though Newcastle United could be edging closer to another signing to help bolster Eddie Howe’s squad.

Over the last 24 hours, there has been movement in a deal to bring Sheffield United striker Will Osula to St James’ Park, in a move to add more depth to the centre-forward position.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Magpies have agreed a £10m deal with £5m in potential add-ons, with the final details to be sorted before the deal is complete.

On the face of the transfer, it seems like a strange move after he failed to find the back of the net in any of his 21 Premier League appearances last season, but the Danish forward is a talent with huge potential.

The young striker could be joined on Tyneside by another forward before the end of the transfer window, with Newcastle needing to reignite interest in one player they’ve previously expressed a desire to sign.

Newcastle could move for £45m ace this summer

In a window where they’ve been linked with a whole host of attacking talents, Howe’s side are yet to complete a deal for any forward-thinking players, with Osula set to be the first in that area of the pitch.

Noni Madueke has looked the most likely to join the club in recent weeks, with it reported that the Englishman has already agreed personal terms to join the Magpies.

Noni Madueke.

However, with no official agreement yet to be confirmed, the club could reignite a move to sign Nottingham Forest right-winger Anthony Elanga this summer.

The Magpies previously registered interest in the 22-year-old at the end of June, with both clubs needing to raise funds to avoid an FFP punishment, but instead secured a move for goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have placed a £45m valuation on the Swedish international’s head this summer, with Elanga potentially able to replicate a deal for a current Newcastle star.

Why Elanga could be Isak 2.0 for Newcastle

Fellow Swede Alexander Isak was an unknown quantity to many Newcastle fans upon his £60m move to Tyneside back in 2022, but two years on, he’s cemented himself as one of the club’s most talented players in the modern era.

He’s added needed goals to Howe’s frontline, scoring 35 goals in his 67 appearances for the club – an average of a goal every 1.9 games he features in.

Alexander Isak for Newcastle

With the current Forest attacker an international teammate of Isak, he has the potential to repeat the masterclass the club produced a couple of years ago, with his stats also benefiting soon-to-be new addition Osula.

The “frightening” Elanga, as described by journalist Laurie Whitwell, registered 14 goals or assists last season, whilst averaging 3.6 progressive carries per 90 – showcasing his desire to get the ball into the final third, handing Osula frequent opportunities.

He’s also averaged 4.5 touches per 90 in the opposition’s penalty area, demonstrating his ability to cause problems in attacking areas – handing Newcastle a greater opportunity to improve their already impressive tally in front of goal.

Although he could cost the club a hefty sum, he would be a brilliant addition and one that could form an excellent partnership with his compatriot.

Elanga could also be perfect for the incoming Osula, who will need more frequent opportunities in front of goal given his lack of impact in the final third last season – potentially helping him settle into life on Tyneside.
