Imagine him & Merino: Arsenal holds talks over signing £86m goal machine

We are just a couple of days away from Arsenal kickstarting their Premier League campaign with what could be a tough opening fixture at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mikel Arteta's side will be hoping to go one better than last year and finally end their two-decade title drought, but to make that objective more attainable, Edu Gaspar and Co must bring in some more quality reinforcements.

Riccardo Calafiori is the only new addition to the first team thus far, although it does appear that some progress is being made regarding the signing of Mikel Merino.

The Spaniard would be a brilliant addition to the midfield, and based on recent reports, the North Londoners could also be looking to sign a new attacker who'd work brilliantly with him.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a report from yesterday's print edition of the Portuguese newspaper Record, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The report claims that the Gunners have recently held 'informal' talks with the Lisbon outfit about the superstar forward.

However, the bad news is that while a transfer is undoubtedly possible, Sporting are resilient in their valuation of the Swedish international, which stands at a massive £86m.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-news-leeds-united-championship

Now, while it would require a herculean financial effort from Arsenal to complete this deal, they have shown a willingness to spend big before, and with so much on the line this season, they must do so again. Moreover, Gyokeres could form a brilliant partnership with Merino at the Emirates.

Why Gyokeres would be a great signing for Arsenal and Merino

Okay, so the first thing to say is that if Merino does end up joining Arsenal in the coming weeks, as it looks like he will, he'd almost certainly be able to form effective partnerships with the team's current striking options, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

However, there is one fundamental reason a partnership with Gyokeres would be more fruitful: his output.

For example, in his 50 appearances for Sporting last season, the "outstanding" number nine, as dubbed by analyst and former player Adrian Clarke, scored a mammoth 43 goals and provided 15 assists for good measure, meaning he maintained a world-class average of a goal involvement every 0.86 games or 1.16 per game.

In contrast, Havertz racked up 21 goals and assists in 51 appearances, while Jesus managed 16 in 36, meaning the German averaged a goal involvement every 2.42 games, and the Brazilian averaged one every 2.25 matches.

However, this potential partnership would be built on more than just the Swede's impressive record. The Sociedad ace has a few attributes that would make him a dream to play with for a poacher like the former Coventry City ace, notably his ability to win duels.

For example, according to Squawka, the 6 foot 2 "monster", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, won a staggering 326 duels last season and was the only player in Europe's top seven leagues to win over 300.

Moreover, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the 28-year-old unsurprisingly sits in the top 1% of midfielders for aerial duels won, winning on average 5.99 per 90.

Now, the reason this would be so beneficial for the Sporting star is that these duels are not all defensive; many of them will be the Spaniard getting to a ball from a teammate first and heading it on to his attackers, meaning that if Arsenal decided to go long from David Raya during a game, there would be a very good chance that Merino would get to it first and then quickly get it up the pitch into the path of the Stockholm-born marksman to bury in the back of the net.

Ultimately, signing Gyokeres will cost the North Londoners a king's ransom, but given his incredible form last season and what's on the line this season, he's worth spending the money on, and he could be unreal alongside Merino.

Covid-19 fears force BCCI to suspend men's Under-19 tournament

“We will continue exploring a window for organising the age-group tournaments post the IPL 2021,” secretary Jay Shah said

A fresh surge in the number of Covid-19 cases around the country has led to the BCCI suspending the proposed 50-over inter-state Vinoo Mankad Trophy for Under-19 men at least till the end of IPL 2021, which is scheduled to get over on May 30.”While our endeavour was to get in as many matches as was practicable across different age groups in the season, prevailing circumstances have now forced us to suspend all age-group tournaments,” Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, said in an email sent to the various state associations on Tuesday. “This is on account of the fact that active COVID cases are on the rise and organising tournaments requires intercity travel, strict quarantine measures and the creation and maintenance of bio-secure bubbles for the participants. Moreover, the situation is presently not conducive in some states.”Related

IPL 2021 to kick off on April 9; will be played across six cities

On January 30 this year, the BCCI had announced its plans of hosting the domestic 50-over competitions for men, women and Under-19 men despite the Covid-19 situation. The men’s national T20 tournament, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, was nearing completion at the time. That meant no Ranji Trophy for the first time since its inception in 1934-35, and, along with a number of other cancelled tournaments, no Cooch Behar Trophy for the Under-19 men or any of the boys’ Under-16 or Under-23 competitions. Similarly, there would be no age-group tournaments for women cricketers either. The postponement of these tournaments assumes greater significance than usual because there is the next edition of the men’s Under-19 World Cup scheduled for 2022 in the West Indies, and also the inaugural women’s Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh tentatively slotted for later this year too.”Considering the fact that the 10th and 12th Board Examinations are also around the corner across India, it is prudent that our young athletes have the opportunity to prepare and focus on these crucial examinations. Furthermore, our players’ health, safety and well-being are our primary concern,” Shah wrote. “I assure you that we will continue exploring a window for organising the age-group tournaments post the IPL 2021.”The BCCI had earlier asked the state associations to give their suggestions on the domestic calendar, which has had to be curtailed in a major way because of the pandemic and could only start in January this year. The 2020 edition of the IPL was held in the UAE, with the four-match Women’s T20 Challenge held alongside the playoffs of the men’s event, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was played across seven centres in India in January. That was followed by the all-format series between India and England – currently in progress – and the men’s 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, which ended on March 14. The women’s 50-over competition is currently on (final on April 4) and the 2021 edition of the IPL is slated to take place in India – only in Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata – between April 9 and May 30.

Bowen will love him: West Ham close in on another brilliant new signing

West Ham and Julen Lopetegui are undergoing complete squad surgery this summer, already completing seven incomings, whilst sanctioning four sales, and having a few more outgoings on free transfers/end of contracts.

Their challenge for the 2024/25 Premier League season will be to return to a European qualification spot, having missed out last season, finishing ninth with 52 points. This will all be whilst Lopetegui is trying to implement a new system and a change of philosophy.

New West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

Changing from a largely counterattacking side to one who wants to build out from the back, keep possession and imprint themselves on the game, is a big reason the squad has undergone such big change, looking to bring in players who suit their new style.

West Ham close to their next transfer

The Irons have already confirmed the captures of attackers such as Nicklas Fullkrug, Luis Guilherme and Crysencio Summerville this summer.

However, the defence hasn't been ignored either with Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo set to form a new tight-knit centre-back partnership.

Max Kilman West Ham graphic

They could now be joined by another defender with the Hammers close to wrapping up a new move.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aaron Wan-Bissaka will become a West Ham player today, all the documents are already in place, and the medical will be completed today to confirm his move from Manchester United.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Manchester United

The fee will be £15m according to Romano, and this deal will then allow United to sign their replacement, Noussair Mazraoui, which is part of the domino effect of Wan-Bissaka to West Ham.

Wan-Bissaka made 30 appearances in all competitions for United last season, providing three assists, and contributing to five clean sheets in his 2,411 minutes played.

How Wan-Bissaka could improve Jarrod Bowen

Most likely to partner Wan-Bissaka on the right flank, is West Ham's top scorer last season, Jarrod Bowen, who made 44 appearances, scoring 20 goals, providing ten assists, and totaling 3,842 minutes played.

And it's the defensive qualities of Wan-Bissaka that could fully unlock Bowen, giving him less defensive responsibility, allowing him to stay higher as an outlet, and be dangerous closer to goal on a regular basis.

The increase in defensive actions from Wan-Bissaka would limit the workload defensively of Bowen. It wouldn't completely negate it, especially against the "bigger" sides, but by having a trusted 1v1 defender behind him, Bowen will be able to play further up and as an outlet at times.

Averaging 2.25 interceptions, Wan-Bissaka is excellent at anticipating play and stealing the ball by jumping into a passing lane. This will often result in launching a counter-attack, of which Bowen would be the main beneficiary, receiving the ball higher and wider, to run at his man.

The pass completion is another important metric, as the United defender is often more risk-averse in his passing, looking to play simple passes into the danger men of the team, and again, for West Ham, one of the main ones would be Bowen, who could receive the ball quicker and have an impact in the attacking phase.

Bowen is already coming off the back of a 20-goal season, having played in a variety of positions, including striker. And the addition of Wan-Bissaka could well free him up when playing on the right, allowing him to be as close to goal as possible.

Derbyshire re-sign Ravi Rampaul for remainder of Vitality Blast and the Royal London Cup

The 36-year-old pacer was the leading wicket-taker in the 2019 Vitality Blast

Derbyshire have re-signed Ravi Rampaul, who was the leading wicket-taker in the 2019 Vitality Blast, for their final three group games in this year’s competition and the duration of the Royal London Cup.Rampaul, the 36-year-old fast bowler, spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons at Derbyshire as a Kolpak registration, but did not return last summer due to restrictions on international travel and finances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.Over the winter, he was Trinidad and Tobago’s leading wicket-taker in their run to the Regional Super50 domestic competition title and played for Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10. He has since been recruited by Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL for this season, his first contract in the competition since 2017.Derbyshire are bottom of the Blast’s North Group with three games to spare, and will need to win all three to have a chance of qualifying. They have struggled badly with injuries this season, particularly to their fast bowlers, and have had to recruit Jade Dernbach on a short-term loan from Surrey as cover. Rampaul will be their second overseas player for the run-in alongside Logan van Beek, with Ben McDermott (international duty) and Billy Stanlake (stress fracture) both ruled out before the start of the group stage. They will also be without key three players during the Royal London Cup due to contracts in the Hundred – Matt Critchley, Luis Reece and Leus du Plooy – while Wayne Madsen has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. While Rampaul is unlikely to add cover for their batting ability, he brings experience to a young bowling line-up.Dave Houghton, the club’s director of cricket, said: “It’s a blow for us that we will lose some quality players for the Royal London Cup, but we’re proud of the players who have been selected for the Hundred.”We will get by, and we’ve brought in a top-level bowler to help us out with that. We will put out a competitive side. It’s a great opportunity for some of our players who specialise in white-ball cricket – we have to hope the best will come out of them.”I’ve always felt that we had some unfinished business. Ravi had such a good season in 2019 – he was club player of the year – but we lost him for a year due to the pandemic. Our bowlers have come on leaps and bounds this year, but to have someone of Ravi’s ability and class opening and closing the innings for us, which is something we’ve missed this season, is going to be fantastic.”Rampaul said: “I loved my first spell with Derbyshire and I’m looking forward to getting started again in familiar surroundings. I know most of the players still, and there’s a few new faces who are really exciting young players. If I can help them along in training and in games, I will do that, and hopefully we can get on a roll and challenge for the knockouts.”

Lewis McManus stumping controversy overshadows innings win for Hampshire

Leicestershire submit complaint to ECB over Hassan Azad dismissal

Hampshire took just 30 minutes to complete an innings victory on the fourth morning at Grace Road, but the result was overshadowed by the fallout from a controversial stumping completed by wicketkeeper Lewis McManus on day three.Leicestershire opener Hassan Azad was given in the second innings after McManus knocked off the bails with his left hand while holding the ball in the air with his right hand appealing for a catch.Leicestershire released a statement on Sunday to express their “disappointment” over the incident, and said they were “fully aware that the ECB is taking this matter very seriously”. An ECB spokesman said the board would wait for the match officials to conduct their investigation before making any further comment.Hampshire captain, James Vince, said his players “weren’t aware” of an issue at the time and that Azad would have been called back if it had been spotted.

“Lewis is pretty down about how it looks but from his and our point of view we weren’t aware there was an issue until a few overs later,” he said. “We’re talking split seconds. Had we known instantly we would have called [Azad] back and knowing Lewis if he’d known exactly what he’d done he would have said something.”Match referee Stuart Cummings spoke to both captains after the game and said a statement would be issued by the ECB in due course. A spokesman for the club said Hampshire would be making no official comment at this stage.Leicestershire head coach Paul Nixon said: “We were disappointed with what happened and we’ve spoken to the match referee, it’s something we don’t want to see in our game – I’ve never seen it before in all my years of cricket, and we’ll wait to see how the ECB handle it.”Leicestershire chief executive Sean Jarvis said the club would be writing to the ECB to “express their disappointment with the behaviour of the Hampshire wicketkeeper”.Hampshire had wasted no time taking two wickets they needed on Sunday to complete a comprehensive innings victory in their opening LV= Insurance County Championship match. Kyle Abbott pinned Gavin Griffiths leg before wicket for 16 before Mohammad Abbas, formerly of Leicestershire, bowled Alex Evans for 2, leaving Chris Wright unbeaten on 31.Vince, who made a superb double-century in Hampshire’s only innings, said: “We’re delighted, winning the toss on an incredible wicket to bat on for the time of the year was ideal, and a score like ours at the rate we made it gives you a bit of leeway.”I felt pretty good, the wicket was so true and had decent pace in it and from the word go I felt in good touch and was timing it well. It couldn’t have gone any better for myself and the team.”Regarding the match Nixon said: “We had to be at our best to compete against a very good side and we weren’t. It was the perfect pitch, but we had a very bad session on the first day, and James Vince was outstanding in the way he took advantage of some wayward bowling. Allsop and then Dawson backed him up and made it tough for our bowlers.”We battled well in our second innings but have to convert 50s and 60s into hundreds.”
