'Mental make-up will make huge difference' – Ramesh Powar on lack of practice

Mithali Raj adds “it’s nice to go in without the baggage” as India Women seek exposure in tour of England

Powar: ‘Opportunity for Mithali and I to take team to the next level’

Ten out of the 18-member Test squad haven’t played a Test before. India play two Tests away this year. Could blooding first-timers in the longest format away from home be a challenge?
Raj: It’s good to have Tests, whether it’s at home or away. If there’s continuity, it’s great because it helps the player as well. Sometimes it’s nice to go in without the baggage; you just go and play it, enjoy the atmosphere and it’s good to have girls who have played for the first time and girls who’ve played in the past share their experiences of how it was way back in 2014. But I guess having two back-to-back Test matches, I mean to say touring England and Australia, can give a lot of exposure to the current lot. And If that can be carried forward in the coming years, it will be great for the sport.Powar: I think it’s a great start. As head coach, obviously, I want more Test games all over the world. We have to look at it in a different way. It’s just a start; let’s take it step by step. Don’t push the girls into a zone where you’re demanding too many things in Test cricket. It’s a new format [for them] that has not been played consistently over the last ten years, so let’s wait and watch how they react. We might get surprises. They will perform better [if] given the opportunity.India have only played one full series – at home against South Africa in March – since the T20 World Cup last year. How will quarantines in Mumbai [before departure] and Southampton [upon arrival] affect the team’s pre-series preparations?
Powar: It’s not ideal, worldwide, right now. We are trying to look at the bright side. If you look at it, women’s cricketers are getting opportunities – Test cricket, ODIs and, T20Is. It’s a good, long tour of 45 days, and I think, we as a team are thankful to the BCCI for putting up such a tour. It’s not easy. It’s not physically possible, yes, [to prepare oneself adequately], but mental make-up will make a huge difference and I think in my last assignment we’ve tried that, and it paid dividends. I have done it with the Mumbai [men’s] team, and we had just six sessions, and we managed to react positively to the tournament we played.Ramesh Powar speaks to the India Women players•ICC via Getty

Powar on the key to adapting quickly to English conditions
Powar: There will be balls seaming around for batters as well as bowlers. I think in every part of England the conditions will be different, so we will try and adjust to that. Batsmen will, obviously, play close to the body, they will show more patience. When the sun is out, they will enjoy their batting, when the sun is down, they’ll put in hard work to get over that period.Bowlers also – if there’s a lot of help, they will have to control their swing also. There are a lot of things. We’ll go there and assess and we’ll build on it. We can’t go there with a fixed mind. The sun might be out and you may get flat tracks too. You never know.Related

Early-season form poses tricky Test selection task – Heather Knight

How important is workload management of 38-year-old Jhulan Goswami, the senior-most member of the Indian attack?
Raj: It’s important that she gets games because even she needs game-time in the middle but, at the same time, being the senior-most it’s also important to keep her in the thick of things. If she needs rest, it’s up to her completely. Knowing Jhulan, I know for a fact she wants to play every game. As a captain also I would like to have her on the field so that the young fast bowlers in the side will get a lot of help if they have her around.Thoughts on Shafali Verma, the 17-year-old batter, who is making heads turn
Powar: It [guidance she needs in longer formats] depends on the way she handles practice sessions because we’ve done something great with Prithvi Shaw when we played the Vijay Hazare Trophy, so you can wait and watch. You might see a different Shafali when she [takes] the field after one and a half months.

Australia's confidence lifted but middle order remains in spotlight

Hayden Walsh Jr will look to cap his memorable series with more wickets

Big PictureThe fourth match of the series was a thoroughly entertaining T20 from start to finish: plenty of thundering strokeplay, some impressive spin bowling, an astonishing late onslaught and then a classy final over as Australia clung on for a win. They will now be looking to take that confidence boost into the final game and then the ODIs which follow in Barbados next week.In many ways, West Indies will feel they should still have won after the foundation laid by Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis. When Fabian Allen’s four sixes in five balls against Riley Meredith brought it down to 11 off 8 deliveries they were favourites again. However, the fact Meredith removed Allen with his last delivery proved critical as it made Andre Russell opt to not take runs on offer in the final over. Was that the right call? It’s an interesting debate.Australia had been placed for a total beyond 200 when they were 126 for 1 in the 12th but the middle order again struggled against Hayden Walsh Jr. Dan Christian’s handy innings ensured a late kick, but the various combinations used at Nos 4-6 in this series have yet to answer many questions. The Bangladesh tour is still to get final sign-off, but if that goes ahead there will be five more games for them next month.West Indies also have another five-match series when they face Pakistan and could look to experiment in one or two slots. Oshane Thomas struggled on Wednesday – his second over costing 25 and including two no-balls – while Akeal Hosein was drafted in as another spin option. The five overs between Thomas, Hosein and Simmons cost 71 as the attack missed the experience of the rested Dwayne Bravo.Watch cricket on ESPN+

Australia WLLLLIn the spotlightAndre Fletcher has not had a great time against Australia with scores of 9, 4 and 6. In the fourth game he slipped down the order to No. 4 in the absence of the injured Shimron Hetymer and his 6 off 14 stifled West Indies’ early momentum and also appeared to impact Simmons’ fluency. If Fletcher is to be a utility batter in the World Cup squad he needs to show a little more adaptability. It had been a long time between outings for Jason Behrendorff who had not played for Australia since the 2019 World Cup. Though his performance did not stand out amid the myriad of other highlights, it was quietly a promising return. His first over inside the Powerplay cost 11 but his second, in the 12th, cost three at the time West Indies lost momentum and then the first four balls of the 17th went for just three runs. “He’s been challenged to get some tricks with his white-ball cricket and he’s done that,” Zampa said.Team newsKieron Pollard, Fidel Edwards, Obed McCoy and Shimron Hetymer have all been nursing injuries at stages during the series which reduces the options available. Bravo could return after being rested which would strengthen all departments.West Indies (possible) 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Chris Gayle, 4 Andre Fletcher, 5 Nicholas Pooran (capt & wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Fabian Allen, 8 Hayden Walsh Jr, 9 Akeal Hosein, 10 Oshane Thomas, 11 Sheldon CottrellAJ Tye, Mitchell Swepson, Wes Agar are the three players from the squad who have yet to have any match time. Tye or Agar could be an option to replace Meredith if they want to take him out of the spotlight, but equally he could continue his development in the middle. Ben McDermott and Ashton Agar have been carrying niggles. They could consider giving Josh Philippe another go in the middle order.Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Alex Carey, 5 Moises Henrqiues, 6 Ashton Turner, 7 Dan Christian, 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Riley Meredith, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Jason BehrendorffPitch and conditionsAside from Starc’s last over, where he got his yorkers in, pace off the ball was the key. Overall, though, the surfaces have been good for batting. There were some brief showers during the previous match which are an increasing chance now the rainy season has arrived.Stats and trivia The most wickets for a bowler who has played five matches in a T20I series is 13 by Ish Sodhi against Australia earlier this year. Hayden Walsh Jr is currently on 11 Mitchell Starc needs two wickets to become the first Australia men’s bowler to reach 50 in T20IsQuotes”Hayden Walsh has bowled really well, we probably haven’t played him as well as we’d like. If we had our time again we’d probably have better game plans to him or hit his bad balls a little better. Something that we’ve spoken about.”

Liverpool reject has been even better than Diaz since leaving for just £15m

It was normal service resumed for Liverpool in their opening game of the Champions League campaign, dispatching AC Milan 3-1 at the San Siro.

It was a crucial result. Last weekend, the Reds were beaten in a shock Anfield loss against Nottingham Forest, with the hosts stumped by the Tricky Trees’ low block and compact defensive line.

Liverpool have steadied the ship but will now need to restore their fluency in the Premier League to ensure that they keep up with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal at the front of the pack.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot-1

Slot deserves praise for his success in instilling his footballing brand seamlessly, bringing a more control-heavy and pass-focused sheen to the red half of Merseyside. Luis Diaz is one of the players to have profited the most from the tactical tweak.

Luis Diaz is starting to improve

Diaz has been at Liverpool for a while now, signing from FC Porto for an initial £37m in January 2022. Despite his skills and wheels, the Colombian’s goal return leaves something to be desired, having posted only 27 goals and 14 assists across 103 appearances.

That’s a goal contribution rate of 0.40 per game. His predecessor on the left flank, Sadio Mane, concluded his time at Liverpool with 120 goals and 42 assists across 269 matches, which stands at a rate of 0.60 per game.

It’s early days but you can see that Diaz is starting to become more effective with his attacking actions. He only needs to score six goals across 34 Premier League fixtures to better last year’s tally, while he has also created two big chances from four outings so far, having mustered up just five across the entirety of last season.

Diaz has been known to ebb and flow, however, and he was pretty dismal in his performance against Forest last time out, sparking fears that his purple patch has faded away and Slot will have to now contend with a highly talented winger lacking in end product.

Cody Gakpo put in a masterful performance from the left wing at the San Siro, and with Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota both capable out on the flank, Slot will feel that he has sufficient options.

But this draws our mind back to the sale of Takumi Minamino, who never quite found his feet on Merseyside but has possibly outshone Liverpool’s South American wideman since leaving.

Why Liverpool sold Takumi Minamino

Liverpool sold Minamino to French club AS Monaco in a deal worth £15.4m last year, linking up with his new teammates in 2022, two-and-a-half years after joining Liverpool from RB Salzburg.

The Japan international had been a terrific player for the indomitable Austrian side, light on his feet and sharp in his decision-making, notably scoring and assisting apiece at Anfield in the Champions League at the start of the 2019/20 season and convincing Jurgen Klopp to make his move.

For a release clause worth just £7m, it was the kind of deal that FSG loved, moving swiftly in December 2019 to get the job done. Minamino arrived the following month.

He earned £75k per week for the Anfield side but failed to ever break into the first team with the kind of regularity that he would have hoped for, only starting five Premier League matches for Liverpool across the entirety of his stay.

He ended on a high, scoring seven goals and adding one assist across the FA Cup and Carabao Cup campaigns in his final year under Klopp’s wing, 2021/22. Liverpool went on to win both competitions and his contribution was immense in achieving this double.

But Minamino was not going to earn a regular starting berth, and when Monaco came calling with a £15m offer, it was something of a no-brainer to cash in for a healthy profit.

Takumi Minamino's performances since leaving Liverpool

Journalist Josh Bunting once said that Minamino, now 29, was “undervalued” in Klopp’s Liverpool squad, but perhaps the wealth of talent simply made it impossible for him to ever spread his wings.

Monaco's Takumi Minamino

Minamino has since gone from strength to strength at Monaco. He was initially branded as a “flop” by journalist Nabil Djellit after failing to impress throughout his first term, scoring only once – and claiming four assists – across just ten starts in Ligue 1.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

But he was excellent last year, notching nine goals and six assists in the division despite starting just 25 games. As per FBref, the diminutive winger ranked among the top 8% of positional peers in the French top flight for goals scored and the top 15% for assists made per 90.

He might appear to have started the current campaign off indifferent at a perfunctory glance, grabbing one goal from four games – three starts – but Minamino has also averaged 2.8 key passes per game.

Given that he has been firing at a more prolific rate while proving to be more relentless with his playmaking output, Minamino might have actually been better than Diaz over the past year or so – though if Slot has actually unlocked the full scope of the Colombian’s skillset, and last weekend’s effort was a mere blip, then that could soon change.

In any case, Minamino is a fine player and has shown since leaving that he had so much more to offer in Liverpool.

Liverpool thought they had the new Gerrard, but he left under Klopp for £0

He was once seen as a very promising talent during his time at Anfield.

Short boundaries aid Durham's long shot as bonus points reach boiling point

The race for a top-two berth takes a statistical turn as Notts bat first at the Riverside

David Hopps11-Jul-2021

Ben Slater made another half-century to lay Notts’ platform•Getty Images

Nottinghamshire 312 for 9 (Patterson-White 66*, Slater 60, Clarke 48, Raine 3-54, Rushworth 3-68) vs DurhamDurham unveiled what were thought to be the shortest boundaries ever seen for a Championship match at Emirates Riverside, in a desperate gambit to gain as many batting bonus points as possible to maximise their chances of a top-two finish in the first phase of the competition. Even the less observant spectators, who wouldn’t notice if there were two balls on the field, looked askance and wondered what was going on. There is no cricket structure ever invented that does not ultimately surrender to the Stattos. No wonder people are watching the football.Despite boasting one of the biggest playing surfaces in the country, the boundary rope was brought in to reduce the playing dimensions to 60 metres on both sides. As skulduggery goes, Durham’s gambit was both legal and logical, but it did strengthen the case for all those who would prefer the bonus points system to be scrapped.Durham, third going into the final round of matches, were 15 points behind the leaders, Nottinghamshire, and simply need to beat them and match them for bonus points to qualify for Division One. At the end of an even, hard-fought but slightly colourless first day, Notts were 312 for 9, Liam Patterson-White is unbeaten on 66 and seven short of a career-best and the match feels pretty even. So far, so simple. The artifice concerned the relative position of the second-placed club, Warwickshire, who took a nine-point advantage into their final match at Worcestershire. In this regard, it gets more complicated. Trigger warning: the next paragraph contains arithmetical discussion and may require concentration. With a win worth 16 points, and a draw worth eight, if Durham gain more bonus points than Warwickshire they can overhaul that nine point-deficit. In other words, even if they only draw against Notts, but haul in more bonus points, they can still potentially finish in the top two if Warwickshire lose. (That appears to be unlikely but you never know).Related

With bonus points weighted towards batting (five of the eight are available for scores above 400) the best way of nailing bonus points was to maximise first-innings runs. On a relaid square where Durham have only made 400 once this season, the club has calculated that by adopting short boundaries it will artificially boost first-innings scores. As the most northerly county, playing on a difficult batting square, with normally big boundaries, Durham have to work harder for their runs; the bonus-point system, over the course of time, puts them at a disadvantage. Therefore, they might argue their chicanery is merely an attempt to balance things up a little. It was still a bit tasteless for all that.(While that paragraph was being written, TV Breaking News coverage showed the England squad en route to Wembley for the European Championship final. A journey down a motorway has not received such extensive coverage since the world watched a low-speed police chase of OJ Simpson’s getaway car 27 years ago. Even the sight of a team bus occasionally changing lane was arguably more exciting than Durham’s bonus-point tactics). That first day never grabbed the attention. Chris Rushworth and Ben Raine, solid professionals to the core, took three wickets each, but even Rushworth would not have not been too impressed to miss kick-off and probably kept an eye on the over-rate. Matty Potts had the sort of loose day that came at an inconvenient time.Raine judged the surface as comparable to the Derbyshire game earlier in the season where Durham did achieve that 400 only for the match to be drawn. As well as Patterson-White, Ben Slater made a sound contribution, driving regularly through the off-side during his 60, often certainly, sometimes airily-fairily, occasionally interesting the slips. Twelve fours ensured , as he put it, that he “got value for the shots.” Raine eventually bowled him, caught on the crease.Joe Clarke is Notts’ fourth different wicket-keeper in as many matches, following Tom Moores, Ben Duckett and Dane Schadendorf. He is England quality – or should be – and made 48 in typically graceful fashion until he chopped on a short, wide one from Matt Salisbury. He does have other things on his mind: he appears in Mold Crown Court on July 25, one of five people charged with affray in connection with a single alleged incident in Wales last year.At 276 for 8, Notts were in danger of missing one of those aforementioned batting points, but Stuart Broad stuck around long enough for 300 to be reached before popping the next ball to mid-off. Notts could have declared between those two incidents to deny Durham a bowling point, but did not. There may be powerful arguments on both sides: leave it with you.

Arteta must drop Trossard and unleash one of Arsenal’s "biggest jewels"

While there has been some more bad news off the pitch for Arsenal this week regarding the fitness of Martin Odegaard, things have been going rather well on it.

Mikel Arteta’s side picked up their third away win in as many years against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and did so without their captain or Declan Rice in the team, setting things up perfectly for Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City.

However, before the Gunners can get too ahead of themselves, they need to prepare for the opening game of their Champions League campaign against Atalanta tonight, and given the quick turnaround, changes to the lineup must be made, one of which should see Leandro Trossard replaced with one of the most exciting youngsters at the club.

Why Leandro Trossard should be dropped

So, there are two key reasons why Trossard should be dropped for tonight’s European tie, and you might even say they are contradictory.

Leandro Trossard scores for Arsenal

The first is that while he wasn’t bad against Spurs on the weekend, he was underwhelming and remained rather quiet throughout the game despite moving between midfield and forward positions alongside Kai Havertz.

His match statistics reflect his mixed performance. In his 80 minutes on the pitch, he took just 30 touches, failed to have a shot on target, maintained a passing accuracy of just 75%, lost six of ten duels, lost the ball nine times, and was dribbled past once.

However, the Belgian also succeeded in 100% of his dribbles, had a shot blocked, played two key passes, created one big chance, won two fouls and made one interception and tackle.

So, while the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace wasn’t at his best, he still offered something, which explains his 6/10 match rating from the Standard’s Simon Collings and leads into the second reason he should be dropped to the bench tonight: fitness.

With Odegaard out of the team, Arteta does not have many players who can come in and play the attacking midfield role aside from Trossard. With the must-win game against City coming up on the weekend, the 29-year-old should be rested, even if he wasn’t spectacular against Spurs.

Overall, the combination of a middling performance in the North London Derby and the need to keep him fresh for Sunday’s game regardless means Arteta should drop Trossard.

Why Ethan Nwaneri should start

Yes, the player Arteta should turn to in place of Trossard this evening is talented youngster Ethan Nwaneri.

There were calls for the 17-year-old to start in the North London Derby last week, but even for an academy product as highly rated as he is, that might have been a step too far.

However, an away game against Atalanta within the context of Odegaard’s injury might be the perfect opportunity to hand him his first competitive start.

Now, that is not to say the Italian side are an easy opponent, they certainly aren’t, but the extreme pressure and hostile environment during an away derby match just won’t be there, and judging off his cameo against the Lilywhites, the Hale Ender, whom talent scout Jacek Kulig described as one of England and Arsenal’s “biggest jewels” looks like he’s been playing top-flight football for years.

In those ten minutes, he won his only duel, completed his only dribble, made one clearance, blocked a shot, took eight touches, and generally looked fearless in possession.

Moreover, his record for the youth sides is exemplary, as in 52 appearances across various junior teams, the “top talent”, as dubbed by Kulig, has scored 27 goals and provided ten assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement every 1.40 games primarily as an attacking midfielder.

Ultimately, Trossard should be rested to keep him fresh for City, even if he was underwhelming against Spurs, and in his place, Arteta should hand the incredibly exciting Nwaneri his first competitive start for Arsenal. It might be a lot of pressure for the 17-year-old, but as they say, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
