'Our batting is a concern,' admits Mahmudullah after Bangladesh suffer Scotland slip-up

Captain says Mushfiqur Rahim dismissal was “turning point” as small chase got out of hand

Mohammad Isam17-Oct-20215:10

Nafees: Bangladesh never looked like they were in the game while chasing

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah, frustrated with their shock six-run defeat at the hands of Scotland, said that they failed to bat aggressively throughout the 141-run chase. However, he still believed that Bangladesh could turn around from this messy start, particularly if they reviewed where they went wrong.”I am very much frustrated,” Mahmudullah said. “Our batting is a concern. We have to bat better. We have to play aggressive cricket, regardless of the situation. We have a deep batting line-up, with Mohammad Saifuddin at No. 9. We may need to think over some changes tomorrow.”We didn’t deliberately bat slowly. We couldn’t hit those boundaries. We have to bat better next time. A lot of things will come up since we lost the game. I think we didn’t play well today, but we are a good T20 team. We have the capability. When we play our best cricket, we can win games.”Related

Mahmudullah said that the chase never took off, and when wickets fell at crucial points, it kept raising the asking run rate even though they were chasing a moderate total on a flat pitch.”We couldn’t make runs in the Powerplay. You need to start well chasing 140. I think Mushfiqur [Rahim] and Shakib [Al Hasan] made some recovery but in the middle [overs], we didn’t bat well even though it was on a good wicket. We made more mistakes.”I think some big overs off the spinners would have raised our run rate, but probably losing wickets in the middle overs prevented us from getting those big overs. The asking run-rate, as a result, went up.”Mahmudullah said that he, Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan, tasked with providing quick runs in the second half of the innings, couldn’t quite get going, but also pointed out how Mushfiqur’s dismissal after making 38 off 36 balls turned the game in Scotland’s favour.”I think Mushy’s wicket was the turning point,” he said. “He was batting well today. A set batter has to stay. Maybe I didn’t bat according to the situation. We should think better as a batting unit.”If Afif and I, or Sohan [Nurul] and I could have carried a little longer, it would have brought us closer. But credit goes to their bowlers. They executed well. We made silly mistakes, and paid for it.”But Mahmudullah didn’t blame his bowlers who leaked 85 runs in the last eight overs, rather praising them for getting the six early wickets.”I think the bowlers were on the right track. We had them at 53 for 6, but then they had a good partnership. They played better cricket than us. We were just not good enough tonight. Mahedi [Hasan] and Shakib bowled very well. Maybe we could have bowled better in the death overs, but our batting was really bad. If we don’t take stock of it, it won’t get us anything good.”

Spurs can replace Van de Ven with star who hasn’t played in the PL in 24/25

Tottenham Hotspur meet Aston Villa in the Premier League this afternoon, and though fans were delighted with a win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, this is a different test entirely.

Unai Emery’s high-flying side perch five points ahead of Spurs, who have only won four of their nine top-flight fixtures thus far. They were defeated by Crystal Palace, who were previously winless, last weekend.

While Ange Postecoglou and his squad are hardly in dire straits, there is a feeling that defeat in north London against the Villans – for the second season running – would place a sour taste in the fanbase’s proverbial mouth.

It’ll be a tough test indeed, there are no two ways about it. Aston Villa are unbeaten on the road in the Premier League this term and have only been beaten by Arsenal, way back in match-week two.

Moreover, Micky van de Ven has picked up another injury and faces a spell on the sidelines. Fans can only hope that it doesn’t prove to be a detrimental blow.

Micky van de Ven's injured – again

Van de Ven is a fantastic footballer, endowed with the highest calibre of athleticism and keeping things crisp from Tottenham’s backline, one of the sharpest distributors in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old has been plying his craft in the English capital for over one year now, joining from German side Wolfsburg in a £43m deal in August 2023. He’s been brilliant; it’s quite easy to forget how porous Spurs were in defence before his advent.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven

Indeed, the Dutchman ranks among the top 1% of centre-backs in the English top flight this season for assists, the top 14% for pass completion, the top 11% for progressive passes, and the top 14% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref. Such metrics underscore the complete nature of his skill set.

He’s a singular player, irreplaceable, even. His lightning-quick pace and muscular physique make him the prototypical defender to nullify Aston Villa’s frontline, with the likes of Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran, once he is inevitably unleashed past the hour mark, certain to be emboldened by his absence.

Tottenham worries have been compounded by the potential absence of Cristian Romero too, with Postecoglou revealing that the Argentine titan was left feeling “a bit sore” following the victory over City.

That eventuality is bound to send a frisson of fear lancing through Lilywhites supporters near and far. Although, saying that, it’s not all doom and gloom.

Radu Dragusin is set to start in central defence, regardless of Romero’s fitness. The 22-year-old Romanian won his only ground duel against City on Wednesday, as per Sofascore, also making five clearances to keep the visitors at bay.

Who else to promote to the rearguard? Archie Gray is one option, but he’s young and inexperienced, and would not fare well in a moonlit position against a team like Villa.

Ben Davies, then.

Ben Davies could replace Van de Ven – again

Davies has been at Tottenham for some time. In July 2014, the Wales international arrived from Swansea City in a swap deal worth £10m.

He’s been a loyal servant down N17. A decade later, Davies, now aged 31, has made 335 appearances for the north Londoners, scoring nine goals and supplying 23 further assists.

An 89-cap international, he’s as experienced as they come and hardly averse to playing from the outset in the Premier League – albeit, Postecoglou is yet to dispatch him in the league this season.

That said, Davies has played every minute of Tottenham’s Europa League campaign so far, keeping a clean sheet at centre-back against AZ Alkmaar last time out.

As per Sofascore, he’s completed 91% of his passes across those three fixtures while averaging 85 touches per game. This bodes well for Davies’ potential replacement of Van de Ven, for he’s not afraid to star at the centre of the action in central defence and is a top-class passer besides.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He’s also proven himself to be capable of stepping in for the Netherlands star last season, proving to be something of a hero during the threadbare spell of Spurs’ 2023/24 season, when Van de Ven was sidelined throughout the winter period.

The £80k-per-week ace is of course not as good as Van de Ven. He’s not as mobile, and nor is he blessed with the same athletic prowess. Having said that, though, the Welshman’s metrics do align quite nicely when contrasting them against his Spurs positional peer, as you can see below.

Davies might not carry some of the same natural-born properties as Van de Ven, sure, but he’s a reliable and robust defender who doesn’t earn as much match action as perhaps he deserves.

Only last season, as stated, the defender stepped in for his peer and produced some composed and cultured performances in the face of adversity, starting 12 matches, completing 91% of his passes, and winning 68% of his ground duels.

Tottenham defender Ben Davies

So then, he’s not just competent on the continent, against ostensibly lower-level opponents. Davies is assured and will not find his fluency knocked by an absence from the Premier League field.

In fact, the long-serving Spurs man’s industriousness may well blend nicely with the more dynamic defending of Dragusin, sure to start against Villa later on today.

Of course, Romero’s unavailability is not something that Tottenham supporters would hope for, but it’s perhaps a testament to Postecoglou’s project that he’s created a team with ample cover for such conundrums.

Davies has what it takes to send Emery’s outfit packing, and he should be unleashed. Who knows, if Romero does receive the green light, maybe his particular profile would be best served in the starting line-up, instead of Dragusin.

Spurs thought they'd signed the new Mousa Dembele, then he left for free

Mushfiqur Rahim says he was dropped, not rested for Pakistan T20Is

Captain Mahmudullah distances himself from decision, says “best to ask team management”

Mohammad Isam18-Nov-2021

“I was asked if I was available, to which I said of course I am available,” Mushfiqur Rahim on his availability for the T20Is against Pakistan•Associated Press

Only a day after being left out of the Bangladesh squad for the Pakistan T20Is, Mushfiqur Rahim has disputed the claim that he has been rested.Mushfiqur said he didn’t “need rest” and told the team management he was available, but they took a collective decision to drop him.”To be honest I haven’t reached the stage when I have to tell someone that I need rest,” Mushfiqur told on Wednesday. “I am definitely available. Why won’t I be? I obviously had a disappointing World Cup. I needed an opportunity to bounce back.Related

Mahmudullah: Captaincy future not in my hands

“I was asked if I was available, to which I said of course I am available. But I was told that the selection committee, team management, head coach and team director took a collective decision to drop me.”Two days ago, Minhajul Abedin, the chief selector, had insisted that Mushfiqur was “rested” because they needed him fresh for the two Tests against Pakistan after the three T20Is starting on Friday.”We have four back-to-back Test matches against Pakistan and New Zealand,” Minhajul had said. “He is a key player. He is one of our best players. Tamim Iqbal is already injured. He is in doubt for the Test series. We want our best player to give his best during the Test series, so after consulting extensively with the team management, we have decided to rest him. It is only for the Pakistan series. He will be available later.”The issue took over captain Mahmudullah’s pre-match press conference on Thursday in Dhaka. Mahmdullah distanced himself from the decision, and said that the team management (of which he is a part, as captain) should be asked the question.”I think it’s best to ask the team management,” he said. “I wasn’t part of the decision.”I don’t know what Mushfiq has said. I can only comment after I have seen what he has said.”It is completely the team management’s decision. I don’t want to talk about it. All I can say is that we will miss Mushfiq.”Mahmdullah himself has been under the spotlight since the World Cup in the UAE where they lost all their five games in the Super 12s stage and had started their campaign with a six-run loss to Scotland. He was criticised for his captaincy and also for his unbeaten 31 off 24 in the chase against West Indies; Bangladesh needed 53 runs off 39 balls when he came out to bat but fell short by three runs.Mahmudullah was, however, Bangladesh’s second-highest scorer in the tournament with 169 runs in eight matches at 28.16, with a strike rate of 120.71. Mushfiqur managed 144 in the eight games, at 20.57, with a strike rate of 113.38 – including a half-century against Sri Lanka.Ahead of Friday’s match, though, Mahmudullah said he was looking ahead instead of thinking about the World Cup.”If we keep talking about what has happened, it might create a negative effect,” he said. “I am really focused on the T20 match [coming up], how I can contribute as an individual player, and make sure everyone else contributes too.”We are taking everything positively. Definitely, Pakistan is a major T20 side, which makes it a challenge for us.”

+ Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Catarinense

'Fully committed to the path going forward' – Wayne Parnell on his international return

He is the first former Kolpak player to be recalled for the national team since the system ceased to exist

Firdose Moonda23-Nov-2021

Wayne Parnell is four years older, has represented ten more teams and collected 100 more white-ball wickets since he last played limited-overs cricket for South Africa. He is now promising to contribute “experience” during the World Cup Super League clash against the Netherlands. It’s a series he didn’t think he’d be playing in, after putting his international career on the back-burner to pursue the county game and life as a T20 league specialist. But with the Kolpak system coming to an end, Parnell is back and believes he has a role to play.”I didn’t set out my store to say I am coming back into South African cricket and I want to play for the Proteas again,” Parnell said at a press conference to mark his return. “I was quite happy coming back to Western Province and trying to add value in their environment. But then it led to these bigger things. For me, I don’t have any expectations. “He (Victor Mpitsang, convener of selectors) asked me if I was interested to play international cricket and I said I cannot turn down my country. I am fully committed to the path going forward.”Parnell is the first former Kolpak player to be recalled for the national team since the system ceased to exist after the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union and selection convener Victor Mpitsang has indicated he won’t be the last. Also on the radar is Rilee Rossouw, and it wouldn’t be a reach to suggest Duanne Olivier, who currently tops the first-class bowling charts, is not far behind. What there doesn’t seem to be yet is a clear plan for how the Kolpak returnees will be reintegrated.”I haven’t spoken to anyone else besides Victor in terms of where do I fit in, am I just filling in a gap or is there an opportunity to take this forward,” Parnell said. “Once we get into camp, I will have to sit down with Mark (Boucher) to understand what the thinking is. But I am available.”While Parnell doesn’t come into the series on the back of strong form – he has played just six matches since rejoining the set-up – he does have a significant cache of game-time. Since 2017, Parnell has played in the Afghanistan, and Bangladesh Premier Leagues, the Pakistan Super League and for two counties, where he believed he learnt the most.”In England, when it comes to white-ball cricket, every team is dangerous and that was the thing that took me by surprise initially,” he said. “It came off the back of the 2015 World Cup, where they had to rebuild and they basically said if you want to play for England, this is how you have to play and this is how the counties have to play. That made me more experienced. I wouldn’t say I am a completely different player, I am just more experienced.”Wayne Parnell last played for South Africa more than four years ago•AFP

In these domestic set-ups, Parnell found the environments more conducive to information sharing and individual growth. “I found I could play with a lot more freedom,” he said. “When you are playing international cricket, it’s a little bit different because I don’t feel there is a lot of helping each other because I am fighting for my spot and the other players are fighting for their spot, so when there were more senior players the transfer of information and knowledge wasn’t as forthcoming, whereas my way of looking at cricket now, is completely different. I know what I can do and I feel comfortable with what I can bring to any team and that’s been my biggest focus over the last couple of years – focusing on myself and not focusing on the next guy.”The maturity that Parnell developed through what can only be described as a personal study of his own game meant that when he returned to a rebuilding Western Province side, he was offered the white-ball captaincy. He led them through the domestic T20 knockout competition, where they lost to the eventual champions, the Knights, and hopes to be able to pick up the reins for other tournaments later this summer.”I’ve always seen myself as a leader within the team,” Parnell said. “Maybe I haven’t been given enough responsibility in the past but when the opportunity came up at Western Province and it was something I grabbed with both hands. It’s something I really wanted to do. I really enjoy helping people, helping the younger guys and trying to get them to the next level, trying to pass on the knowledge that I have picked up in years of playing.”Parnell may find himself doing a similar role in the ODI set-up. South Africa have rested six regulars, including captain Temba Bavuma, for the Netherlands series and will field a fairly inexperienced outfit against a team they last played against seven years ago.Parnell is familiar with some of the Dutch players from the county circuit but will also bring in fresh ideas from his Kolpak days, which South Africa have not had in the past. If all goes well, it may prompt a return for others who are back in the fold but at the least, it has opened the door for Parnell to have a second stint as an international. “I am very comfortable with where my game is at, and with myself as a person,” he said. “I am still young enough. I am playing good cricket. I feel that I can still contribute at this level.”

Matheus Nunes tells Man City he wants to start but the club has other ideas

Manchester City are not ruling out the possibility of selling a £130,000 per week outcast next summer, despite the fact he is desperate to fight for his place, according to a recent report. The Blues are back in action on Wednesday evening as they look to continue their unbeaten start to this season’s Champions League. It has been another good start to a campaign for Pep Guardiola’s side, but despite that, they already have their eye on potential transfers for 2025.

Man City shortlist "amazing" Raphinha with Barca reluctantly open to sale

Man City have been keeping an eye on the former Premier League star for some time now.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 22, 2024 Man City transfer news

Brighton midfielder Facundo Buonanotte is a player who has emerged on City’s radar in the last few days, as the Argentine continues to impress while on loan at Leicester City. The attacking midfielder has been a standout performer for the Foxes, and that has caught the attention of City as well as Liverpool, with the Seagulls potentially open to a sale in the summer should they get an offer of around £25 million, a fee both City and Liverpool are willing to pay.

As well as the Blues keeping an eye on Buonanotte, City also hold an interest in Barcelona’s Raphinha, as they have shortlisted the Brazilian star. The 27-year-old has been of interest to the Premier League side since 2023, and they have continued to keep an eye on his situation, but they do face competition for his signature, as Al-Nassr are also interested.

City have followed Raphinha for over a year and a half now, but at this stage he isn’t considered a priority target. However, that could change given the news that is emerging about the future of one of City’s current players.

Man City are ready to sell Matheus Nunes

According to Give Me Sport, Manchester City are ready to sell Matheus Nunes at the end of the season, despite him being keen to fight for a place in their starting XI. The 26-year-old joined the Blues during the 2023 summer transfer window, but the return of İlkay Gündoğan has pushed him further down the pecking order.

Nunes, who is on a weekly wage of £130,000, has started just two games in all competitions for City this season prior to Wednesday’s clash with Sparta Praha, playing a total of 232 minutes of football. But that could change this week, as this report states that Nunes could be in line for starts against the Prague-based outfit and also vs Southampton.

However, even though he could start back-to-back games this week, Nunes is still in line to be sold by the Manchester City board at the end of the season if he doesn’t make a good impact in the side. The Portuguese international is determined to make the grade at the Etihad, telling those high up at the club that he wants to force his way into Pep’s first choice XI, but that now looks unlikely.

A goleira Lorena e a meia Rafa Levis representam o Grêmio.
