Spurs could sign Premier League flop in awful Radu Dragusin repeat

The last month or so has been brutal for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have suffered several injuries to star players and been on the wrong end of several eye-catching results.

For example, they lost 6-3 to Liverpool on Sunday evening, 4-3 to Chelsea a couple of weeks ago and 2-1 to newly promoted Ipswich Town before the final international break of the year, and in each of those games, the manager started Radu Dragusin.

The Romanian international has not been great this season, so reports suggesting the club could be set to repeat the mistake that saw them sign him in January should worry fans.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham are interested in Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey, a player with 112 Premier League appearances to his name.

In fact, the report has revealed that the North Londoners have already made an approach to take him on a short-term loan as they look for solutions to their current defensive crisis.

However, while their need for a new defender might be the most acute, the Lilywhites aren’t the only team interested in the former Everton ace, as reports from earlier this month named Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest as two of four Premier League sides keen.

Everton's Ben Godfrey

Now, given Spurs’ stature and what they can offer players, we would be surprised if they couldn’t get ahead of the competition, but given their ambitions, we aren’t sure they should, especially considering how poorly their last centre-back signing from Italy has fared.

Why Spurs shouldn't sign Godfrey

So, simply put, signing Godfrey, even on a short-term loan, would be a poor decision and could end up mimicking Dragusin’s move.

The Romanian joined the North Londoners from Serie A side Genoa in January for a fee of around £26.7m, and while there was some excitement around the transfer, he’s now one of the most scrutinised players in the squad, and for good reason.

The 22-year-old has been forced into a more prominent role this season due to injuries, and while he hasn’t been cataclysmically bad, he has been poor.

For example, in the Europa League, he got himself sent off against Qarabağ FK, gifted Victor Osimhen a goal against Galatasaray and looked utterly out of his depth against Rangers.

He’s not fared much better in the Premier League, averaging just 1.30 points per game and being so poor against Ipswich Town that journalist and fan Mitch Fretton described his performance as an “absolute horror show.”

Now, while Godfrey’s move would be similar in the sense that he’d also be joining from an Italian club, the difference is that he’s not an important member of Atalanta’s squad.

For example, since joining the Bergamo outfit in the summer, he’s made just five appearances, totalling 93 minutes, and was even described as a ‘flop’ by Italian outlet Tutto Atalanta in September.

Unfortunately for the former Norwich City gem, he hasn’t got an impressive body of work in the Premier League to fall back on either, as in the four seasons following his £25m move to Goodison Park, he made just 93 appearances.

Moreover, during his final campaign with the Toffees, the “embarrassing” centre-back, as dubbed by former scout Bryan King, made just 16 appearances across all competitions, meaning he wasn’t deemed good enough to help the club avoid relegation.

Ultimately, Spurs’ need for some defensive reinforcements is undeniable, but that does not mean they should be signing the first player they come across, and that is what this potential deal feels like.

PL rivals want him: Man City facing awful Palmer repeat over £25m star

Manchester City might have been in poor form over the past three months or so, but it has not meant that youngsters have not had an opportunity in the first team. Since Phil Foden first broke into the City side, there has been a clear pathway there for academy stars.

It was meant to be a big season for Oscar Bobb in 2024/25, but that has been put on hold. The youngster played once this term, grabbing an assist, but picked up an injury at the start of the season. The likes of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Nico O’Reilly have also been given opportunities for the Citizens.

Manchester City's Oscar Bobb

However, there is one academy star who has struggled for regular minutes this term and is now linked with a move away from the club.

The academy star who could leave Man City

The player in question here is James McAtee. The highly-rated attacking midfielder has not necessarily got the minutes people expected he would at the Etihad Stadium this season, and could now leave the club search of more game time.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are one of the sides interested in signing the 22-year-old. The Magpies are believed to be monitoring the situation in case of a potential move this winter.

In terms of a price for the attacking midfielder, City could ask for upwards of £25m. That would be a deal of pure profit given he is an academy graduate. Having previously been out on loan, the youngster could well get a permanent move in order to flourish.

Why selling McAtee could be a mistake

It is a shame that McAtee has not had regular game time under Pep Guardiola in the 2024/25 campaign. The Salford-born attacker has played just nine games across all competitions for his boyhood club. However, the 357 minutes he has racked up are equivalent to 3.9 full 90-minute games.

Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

Despite the lack of first-team action McAtee has seen this term, he has still made a lasting impression. He grabbed his first goal for the Citizens in the Champions League against Slovan Bratislava earlier in the season.

It might well seem curious that McAtee has not played much for the East Mancunian side this term. He is clearly someone well-rated by Guardiola, who said as recently as last weekend that he “always felt this guy could play” with the star-studded City team.

Upon hearing the news that a Premier League rival wants to sign an academy graduate who is highly rated, City fans may get a bad sense of deja vu. It is certainly reminiscent of the deal to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea back in 2023.

He cost the West Londoners £42.5m, which proved to be worth every penny. The Wythenshawe-born attacker has gone on to become “the best player in the Premier League” according to Jamie Carragher.

Indeed, the stats certainly suggest that with 37 goals and 21 assists in 66 Chelsea games so far.

Not only are the pair both Manchester-born, and City academy graduates, but they are left-footed attacking players who love to operate in the pockets. The similarities are there for all to see.

McAtee – who talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed a “special player” – certainly ticks the boxes of what Newcastle are looking for this winter. Chris Waugh of The Athletic confirmed on Boxing Day that they are targeting a right-winger.

McAtee is a versatile player and can operate as a winger, in the half-space or as a number ten or eight. For Sheffield United on loan, he played right across the frontline, just like Palmer does at Chelsea.

This is a move that City need to ensure they handle carefully. Of course, McAtee’s lack of game time is a worry for his development as a player, but if he leaves and ends up exploding at a Premier League rival, as Palmer has, it would be another move they might regret.

Bengal rewrite record books as top-nine batters hit 50-plus scores against Jharkhand

Only once before had eight 50-plus scores been recorded in a first-class match, back in 1893

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jun-2022

In sequence, the nine Bengal batters who all topped 50 in the game against Jharkhand•Cricket Association of Bengal

When Sayan Mondal, Bengal’s No. 8 batter, reached his half-century first ball after lunch on the third day of their Ranji Trophy 2021-22 quarter-final against Jharkhand, it became the first instance of the top-eight batters of a team scoring at least fifty runs in a first-class innings. Bengal then went one better, as Akash Deep, the big-hitting fast bowler, smashed an 18-ball 53 not out, with eight sixes from No. 9, thus making it the first time nine batters, in sequence or not, have scored at least fifty in a first-class innings. When Mondal got to his milestone, it matched the record of the Australian tourists to England in 1893, when they had eight batters scoring at least a half-century in their first innings against Oxford and Cambridge Universities. But, on that occasion, those eight weren’t the top eight batters. For Bengal, the party started at the top when openers Abhimanyu Easwaran, the captain, and Abhishek Raman got going, slowly but steadily, after Jharkhand opted to bowl at the toss under cloudy conditions on day one. The two batted till the 25th over, scoring 88 runs together, before Raman retired hurt when on 41. Abhimanyu carried on, in the company of Sudip Kumar Gharami, before becoming the first man to be dismissed, for 65.Related

Bengal had their most productive phase after that, as Gharami, playing his fifth first-class match, and Anustup Majumdar, with 67 first-class appearances before this one, putting together 243 runs. Both scored centuries, before Majumdar fell for 117. That brought the opener Raman back to the crease, and he added 20 more to his personal total, becoming the third to be dismissed, for 61.Gharami, who beat his previous first-class best of 27 by a distance, fell against the run of play when on 186, adjudged to have nicked a Rahul Shukla delivery to the wicketkeeper down the leg side.Cue another century stand, this time between the veteran Manoj Tiwary and newcomer Abishek Porel, the wicketkeeper. They added 109 for the fifth wicket before Porel fell for 68, and Tiwary was the next to go, for 73.The top six out of the way, Jharkhand might have entertained hopes of a quick finish, but Shahbaz Ahmed and Mondal then took over, and Bengal found another century stand, of 101 runs, which ended when Shahbaz under-edged the other Shahbaz, Nadeem, behind to walk back for 78. Mondal went to the lunch break on the third day on 49, having ceded the centre stage to Akash Deep, the No. 9, who had walked out and biffed four sixes in an unbeaten eight-ball 24 by that stage. He hit four more, after Mondal had achieved his milestone, and Bengal declared on 773 for 7 immediately after.Prior to the Bengal-Jharkhand game, being played at the Just Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, there had been 27 occasions when seven 50-plus scores had been recorded in a first-class innings, according to Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians records. Of those, three had come in the Ranji Trophy: for Maharashtra against Northern India in 1940-41, for Holkar against Mysore in 1945-46, and for Bengal against Bihar in 1996-97.

It also highlighted a brilliant bit of talent-spotting by technical director Johan Lange, who is now reportedly looking to add a few more key signings before February 3.

Spurs are actively exploring a possible move for Randal Kolo Muani, with the France international deemed surplus to requirements by manager Luis Enrique as the Lilywhites, Man United and Juventus look to poach the forward.

As well as Kolo Muani, there are rumours that Postecoglou’s side are in the market for a new midfielder and centre-back, with Levy and Lange potentially adding up to three major signings this month.

“They have already told the manager that they will do something. So I expect January to be busy for Spurs,” said reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano to GiveMeSport just before the window opened.

“I think it could be two signings, maybe three, I’m not sure, but it will depend on opportunities. But Tottenham are exploring options, Tottenham are actively working on scouting and following players. So I think for Tottenham it will be a busy month.”

In terms of the engine room, Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi continues to be linked.

Tottenham ready to do business with Inter over signing Davide Frattesi

The Italy international is valued at around £29 million, according to TUTTOmercatoWEB (via Sport Witness), who also share an update on Tottenham’s interest.

Other reports have claimed that Frattesi has been offered out to Spurs by intermediaries, who are actively seeking a new club for the 25-year-old, and TMW state that the north Londoners are prepared to take them up on it.

Indeed, it is believed that Tottenham are ready “to get down to business” over signing Frattesi, potentially meaning they’re preparing to head to the negotiating table or make some sort of approach for his services.

Roma and Napoli are fellow contenders, but Spurs’ interest is described as concrete. Frattesi and his camp are also set for a key meeting with Inter in the next few days to discuss his future, where all parties will decide whether a January deal is indeed feasible.

The ex-Sassuolo sensation has been likened to Italy star Nicolo Barella in the past, and his £29m price tag could make him an appealing option to reinforce Postecoglou’s midfield options.

Ben Stokes' farewell casts peculiar shadow as South Africa join the ODI roadshow

South Africa promise to be potent foes as Buttler’s men brace after 48-hour turnaround

Vithushan Ehantharajah18-Jul-2022

Ben Stokes will take the field in an ODI for the final time at Chester-le-Street•Getty Images

Big pictureIn many ways, the Ben Stokes farewell ODI at Durham will be a welcome distraction for England. Two series defeats to India, both 2-1, the last of which, in the 50-over format, was confirmed on Sunday in a comprehensive five-wicket defeat at Emirates Old Trafford, has made life after Eoin Morgan seem a little tougher sooner than most anticipated. And unfortunately for the ones who had to take the team on after their skipper’s departure, the pressure on them has ramped up over the last fortnight. That’s not to say captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott are in any real danger of being cast aside. The reason they are in their roles was for continuity for the defending ODI champions and, what we know of this new era under managing director Rob Key, is everyone will get the opportunity to work things out.Nevertheless, a swansong for the team’s talismanic allrounder is exactly the kind of headline grabber that England need for a bit of breathing room. Not to mention playing in front of a Chester-le-Street crowd that will be focussed more on saying goodbye to one of their own rather than a loss of clarity for the hosts in a format of the game they used to nail in their sleep.Even with ball having more of a say than bat in the last week of ODIs with India, it was damning that no England player scored more than 100 runs across three innings and that there was just one half-centurion in Buttler. And it is far from ideal that the stand-out for the hosts, Reece Topley, will miss Tuesday’s game on account of workload management. The left-arm quick and his nine wickets, almost all big names, were the only bit of cutting edge England showcased and the hope will be Matthew Potts can offer the same on debut. The return of legspinner Adil Rashid, after taking time off for Hajj, will give some much needed teeth to the attack in the middle overs. As far as South Africa are concerned, they seem in a more stable place, even if they are coming off the back of a series defeat to Bangladesh in March, and a tied T20I series with India last month. A shellacking at the hands of the England Lions side in Taunton was followed by a reverse in Worcester in a pair of warm-up matches that were more about getting rid of any ring rust than anything else. There are many players in South Africa’s ranks who are trying to establish themselves at international level, but they will be supported by two experienced campaigners in Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, who have averaged 65 and 73 in ODIs since the start of 2021 (the second and third highest among those who have 500 runs or more). And quicks such as Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje will continue testing an England line-up who have yet to find an appropriate method for this season’s edition of the white Kookaburra ball.To judge by the scenes at training in Chester-le-Street, the South Africans have a great deal of focus and, crucially, energy which will hold them in good stead against an England side that looks particularly weary and are coming straight into this fixture with just a single travel-day off. That Stokes cited an inability to carry on in all three formats in his farewell statement is worth heeding with as we go into the first of six white-ball games in the space of 12 days.Form guideEngland LWLWW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
South Africa LWLWW
In the spotlightThe idea of picking a player with just 10 List A matches to his name and expecting him to have a big impact for the national team would usually be foolhardy. But off the back of four Tests, against New Zealand and India, in which he hurried batters throughout long spells without losing enthusiasm, you can see why Matthew Potts may be regarded as a shot in the arm for a fatigued group. There isn’t much to extrapolate from Potts’ 18 dismissals at 26.72 with the red ball beyond a desire to seize the big moments and make each delivery count. And maybe those are good enough reasons to pick someone who has played just one 50-over game since the start of 2021. Nevertheless, the Durham local’s ability to do significant work with the older ball means this could be the start of a fruitful career as a Liam Plunkett-a-like.To call Janneman Malan an old fashioned one-day opener is perhaps doing the 26-year-old a disservice. But with a strike rate of 87 and an average of one six an innings, he is one of the more watchful in the modern era. Yet no one can argue with his output so far, in a career that is only two years and 17 caps old and has already featured three ODI centuries and as many fifties. Given how relatively tough batting has been this summer, Malan’s stickability could pay dividends provided he can out-last any early movement. An average of 59 suggests there’s every chance the reigning ICC Emerging Player of the Year finishes the three ODIs having picked up the 172 runs he needs to make it to 1000 in the format.Team newsMatthew Mott basically confirmed Potts would debut when praising the energy and fresh legs he brought to the group over the last couple of days. That looks to be a straight swap for Reece Topley, while Adil Rashid is likely to come in for Brydon Carse, who has been ineffective so far, despite his valiant efforts in the middle overs.England (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 David Willey, 9 Craig Overton, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Matthew PottsDe Kock missed the warm-ups with a bruised finger but has been passed fit and will reprise his usual role as the tempo-setter at the top of the innings. Expect a decision to be made on whether Keshav Maharaj plumps for the extra spin of Tabraiz Shamsi or left-arm pace of Marco Jansen.South Africa (probable): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Keshav Maharaj (capt), 9 Anrich Nortje, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Tabraiz Shamsi/Marco JansenPitch and conditionsChester-le-Street has always been one for the seamers though recent precedence has seen batting scores rise – Sri Lanka have the venue’s highest score of 338, against West Indies in the 2019 World Cup. That is probably down to a more attacking approach globally rather than any environmental shifts. That being said, temperatures will hit a high of 35 degrees Centigrade which may influence how many spinners are selected and indeed who will bat first with the 1pm start time.Stats and trivia Ben Stokes will play his 105th and final ODI on Tuesday. Coincidentally, he needs 81 runs to pass 3000 for the format, and (assuming he is dismissed) to finish with a career average of 40. England have won nine of their 13 completed ODIs at Chester-le-Street, including eight of the last nine – the exception being Sri Lanka’s victory in 2014.Quotes”Jos brings a nice calmness. He’s a hugely empathetic person. He won’t be someone who stands up and makes big speeches, he’ll do it in his own quiet way, one-on-one, working out what makes players tick. And he’s an amazing player – that helps.”
“There are two ways to look at it. They’ve been playing more cricket than us and have found combinations, but it is a point we could capitalise on and build some confidence in our ODI unit before the World Cup next year.”
