Kieron Pollard blows, Jordan Thompson four-for see London Spirit to second win

Manchester Originals never in contention during chase of 161

Jordan Thompson produced the best Hundred bowling figures of the season as London Spirit trounced Manchester Originals by 52 runs to register a second successive win and go top of the table.Seamer Thompson, who took two wickets at The Oval last week, followed that up with a remarkable 4 for 21 from 20 balls to steamroller the Originals for just 108 at Lord’s. He was ably backed up by the rest of the Spirit attack to ensure a second successive defeat for the Manchester side as the home side’s total of 160 for 6, Zak Crawley top-scoring with 41 from 34, proved to be more than enough. The result continued a notable turnaround for Eoin Morgan’s team, who have already recorded more victories than they managed when finishing bottom in last year’s inaugural tournament.Having opted to bat, Spirit soon lost Adam Rossington to a first-ball duck, leg before to Sean Abbott, and they struggled for momentum despite some powerful blows to the boundary by Crawley. His partnership of 54 from 33 with Morgan raised the home side’s prospects of a sizeable score, with the skipper walloping both Tom Hartley and Matt Parkinson over the fence to reach 37 from 26.However, the batting side could make little of Paul Walter’s nagging line and changes of pace – the Originals’ left-armer finishing with miserly figures of 2 for 18 from his 20 deliveries. With Morgan eventually mistiming a drive off Walter that sailed into the hands of long-on, another two quick wickets left Spirit wobbling slightly at 120 for 5. They were revived by a belligerent cameo from Kieron Pollard, who smashed 34 from just 11 deliveries – including two brutal sixes off Fred Klaassen’s final set – to propel his side up to the 160 mark.Originals were counting on an explosive start from Jos Buttler – but England’s white-ball captain departed for just 6, skying Thompson as Mason Crane raced from short third to grab a difficult diving catch behind the keeper, Rossington.Spirit’s seamers ensured boundaries were few and far between in the early stages, with only three registered from the first 37 balls and the visitors continued to shed wickets at regular intervals. Thompson foxed Wayne Madsen with a slower delivery and then had Walter caught at point, while the most eye-catching dismissal was that of Andre Russell, run out at the bowler’s end by Liam Dawson’s direct hit from point.Viewing the carnage from the other end, Phil Salt (36 from 34) did his best to hold Originals’ innings together – but, when he was bowled by Dawson, any faint hopes of a recovery evaporated.

Arsenal willing to make striker 2nd most expensive signing after Declan Rice

Arsenal are willing to shell out a fee to make one striker their second most expensive ever signing, behind their club-record deal for midfielder Declan Rice, as manager Mikel Arteta seeks to add a new forward to his squad this month.

Arsenal in dire need of striker after Gabriel Jesus blow

Gabriel Jesus is set to miss the rest of this season after rupturing his ACL, and the Brazilian’s lengthy absence means that Arteta will have just Kai Havertz from now until the conclusion of this Premier League title race – if they can’t get another striker through the door.

Arteta has confirmed Arsenal’s plans to sign a new forward this month, and it is reliably believed that the Gunners are working hard on adding a new number nine to their ranks before deadline day on February 3.

There are even reports that Arsenal have had a loan bid rejected for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, while others claim the north Londoners are in active negotiations with RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko, who they reportedly tried and failed to sign last summer.

Arsenal have also been urged to break the bank for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, who’s been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

“I would literally go right now with a barrel-load of cash and drive to Newcastle and break the bank to sign Alexander Isak,” said Piers Morgan on talkSPORT.

“£100million, £120m, £140m, £150m – I don’t care. I will find the players from our 87 defenders that we’ve signed in the last two years to make up the cash for the PSR stuff.

“The way we play, the chances we create – do you know how many shots we’ve had this week? 49 shots. Do you know how many goals we’ve scored? One. Do you know who scored it? Gabriel, a central defender. If that doesn’t tell you something, I don’t know what does.”

Arsenal prepared to pay £84 million release clause for Viktor Gyokeres

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, as relayed by GiveMeSport, Arteta’s side are prepared to go all out for Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede has picked up right where he left off last season, bagging an incredible 32 goals and six assists in all competitions so far, making him a hot commodity for elite European sides who are after a proven scorer.

It is believed that Arsenal are not opposed to paying Gyokeres’ £84 million release clause, which would make him their second-most expensive ever signing behind Rice.

The 26-year-old, formerly of Coventry City, has enjoyed quite a rise to stardom. Gyokeres also possesses favourable physical attributes which could make him tailor-made for the Premier League, like his speed.

“I don’t want to say he should test himself in the Premier League but who is like him in the Premier League at the moment,” said Tony Mowbray in 2023.

“Who is too fast, too strong and too big, you would suggest Haaland is like that and Gyokeres in this league looks a yard faster and stronger than the players he plays against in the Championship.”

One of the world’s best: Man City could sign dream Marmoush alternative

Manchester City have been the most active side in the Premier League so far during January, making numerous moves that hopefully will improve Pep Guardiola’s side.

Victor Reis appears to be edging ever closer to a move to the Etihad, with the Brazilian flying over to England to complete his transfer from Palmeiras for around £30m.

The youngster will be looking to provide added cover to the club’s backline, potentially linking up with another new addition, Abdoukodir Khusanov, who also looks set to move to Manchester in the coming days.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that a deal has been agreed with French side Lens over a move for the 20-year-old, with it just a matter of time until the move is completed.

The aforementioned pair could also be joined by another new addition in the North West, further aiding Guardiola’s chances of improving the current run of form in England’s top flight.

Man City’s move to land Omar Marmoush

Over the last few days, City have ramped up their efforts to land Eintracht Frankfurt talisman Omar Marmoush after his superb start to the 2024/25 season for the Bundesliga outfit.

The Egyptian already has 15 goals to his name, providing that attacking threat that the Citizens have often lacked in recent months – even with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland in the side.

Eintracht Frankfurt's OmarMarmoushcelebrates scoring their second goal

He looked set for a transfer to Nottingham Forest in the summer, but the Reds failed to match the £25m price tag for his services, with their loss set to be City’s gain in the hunt for a top four spot come the end of May.

Journalist Romano has been on top of the move for the attacker, claiming that he’s already agreed terms, but that the two clubs are in talks over a potential fee for the 25-year-old.

City have already made a proposal for his services, but it remains to be seen whether it will be accepted or if they will have to up their bid to convince Frankfurt to part ways with their star man.

Whilst a deal could be heading in the right direction, should they failure to match the asking price, they could turn to another transfer target to provide the goods in attacking areas.

Manchester City's dream Marmoush alternative

Jonathan David is a player who has also been touted with a move to Manchester in recent weeks, but they aren’t the only side in the race with Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs also credited with an interest.

The Canada international could be set to depart current side Lille this month, with his contract expiring in the summer, he could be free to talk to foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement.

However, given his contact scenario, City could look to take advantage and sign the 24-year-old on the cheap, certainly providing a cheaper alternative to Marmoush.

Being cost-effective is one thing, but David would also provide serious quality to the side, scoring 11 times in just 17 Ligue 1 appearances, only registering four fewer goals to date.

However, David, who’s previously been dubbed “one of the best strikers in the world” by Tony Marinaro, has matched or bettered the Egyptian across numerous key areas throughout 2024/25.

The Canadian may have scored fewer goals, but has registered a better shot-on-target rate along with a higher goal per shot-on-target rate, showcasing his clinical edge in attacking areas.

He’s also managed a higher take-on success rate, along with more aerials won, potentially being a more all-round option than Marmoush for Guardiola in the years ahead.

Whilst undoubtedly the Frankfurt man remains the number one target this month, David’s stats are evident that he would be the perfect alternative should any deal fail to materialise.

Chris Gayle has signed up for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots for the inaugural 6IXTY, a T10 tournament that will run from August 24 to 28 in St Kitts, ahead of the Caribbean Premier League. West Indies openers Evin Lewis and Andre Fletcher as well as South African Dewald Brevis will be turning up for Patriots. The 6IXTY is a joint venture between Cricket West Indies and the CPL and will feature six men’s teams and three women’s teams competing for their respective Universe Boss trophies, named in honour of Gayle who is also the ambassador for the tournament.Notable differences in 6IXTY

Each batting team has six wickets, rather than ten

Batting teams can “unlock” a floating third powerplay over by hitting two sixes in the initial two-over powerplay

Teams will bowl five consecutive overs from each end, rather than switching ends after each over

If teams fail to bowl their ten overs within 45 minutes, a fielder will be removed for the final six balls

Fans will be able to vote for a “mystery free hit” via an app or website

Gayle had earlier said that he was “genuinely excited” about the current innovations in this tournament after opting out of CPL 2022. “In particular, I am looking forward to the mystery team ball and hitting two sixes in the first 12 balls to unlock a third powerplay over,” he had said. The tournament will also witness overseas players such as Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane and Australia allrounder Chris Green – all representing Jamaica Tallawahs.New Zealand wickekeeper-batter Tim Seifert and Sri Lanka’s Seekkuge Prasanna will appear for Trinbago Knight Riders.South Africa’s Colin Ingram and Heinrich Klaasen, and Ireland’s Paul Stirling will strengthen the batting of Guyana Amazon Warriors, whereas New Zealand fast bowler Scott Kuggeleijn will add to Saint Lucia Kings’ bowling muscle.Barbados Royals, meanwhile, have picked Pakistan’s Azam Khan, Ireland’s Harry Tector and young South African allrounder Corbin Bosch.Women’s squads are yet to be announced.Men’s squadsBarbados Royals: Jason Holder, Obed McCoy, Kyle Mayers, Azam Khan (wk), Hayden Walsh Jr, Oshane Thomas, Rahkeem Cornwall, Harry Tector, Devon Thomas (wk), Joshua Bishop, Justin Greaves, Corbin Bosch, Nyeem Young, Teddy Bishop, Ramon SimmondsJamaica Tallawahs: Rovman Powell, Sandeep Lamichhane, Fabian Allen, Imad Wasim, Brandon King, Kennar Lewis, Mohammad Amir, Shamarh Brooks, Migael Pretorius, Chris Green, Raymon Reifer, Jamie Merchant, Amir Jangoo (wk), Shamar Springer, Nicholson Gordon, Kirk Mckenzie, Joshua JamesGuyana Amazon Warriors: Shimron Hetmyer, Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd, Colin Ingram, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shai Hope, Paul Stirling, Heinrich Klaasen, Keemo Paul, Jermaine Blackwood, Gudakesh Motie, Veerasammy Permaul, John Campbell, Shermon Lewis, Ronsford Beaton, Matthew Nandu (wk), Junior SinclairSt Kitts & Nevis Patriots: Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Andre Fletcher, Qasim Akram, Sherfane Rutherford, Dwaine Pretorius, Darren Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Dominic Drakes, Dewald Brevis, Izharulhaq Naveed, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Jon-Riss Jaggesar, Keacy Carty, Kelvin Pittman, Jaden CarmichaelSt Lucia Kings: Roston Chase, Johnson Charles (wk), Kesrick Williams, McKenney Clarke, Alzarri Joseph, Scott Kuggeleijn, Mark Deyal, Jeavor Royal, Matthew Forde, Leroy Lugg, Preston McSween, Larry Edwards, Ackeem Auguste, Rivaldo Clarke, Roshon Primus, Ravendra Persaud, Jesse BootanTrinbago Knight Riders: Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Akeal Hosein, Ravi Rampaul, Tim Seifert (wk), Seekkuge Prasanna, Jayden Seales, Tion Webster, Khary Pierre, Anderson Phillip, Terrence Hinds, Leonardo Julien, Shaaron Lewis

Dean Elgar promises 'honesty' as South Africa look to regroup after crushing loss

Captain hints at changes after blaming batters for decisive failure on first day of Test

Dean Elgar has indicated South Africa will have to make “a few tough decisions” about their batting line-up ahead of the series-deciding third Test against England, after two sub-200 totals cost them dearly at Old Trafford.South Africa were shot out for 151 and 179 to lose by an innings and 85 runs, and Elgar laid the blame squarely on his batters, after he won the toss and chose to bat first in overcast, seamer-friendly conditions.”First-innings runs stabilise your game,” Elgar said. “If you score 300-plus, you are giving yourself the best chance to compete and get a result in your favour. We were half of that. I really didn’t think we batted particularly well. Sure, the ball went around but this is Test cricket, man, you need to to deal with it.South Africa were reduced to 77 for 5 by lunch on the first day and lost two wickets in three overs before the break, which Elgar believes started the spiral from which they could not recover.”If we were three-down at lunch – 80-odd for three – we’d have been in a pretty good position and I think I would have bitten my arm off for that result,” he said. “But we were five-down and you are always going to be playing catch-up cricket with regards to that. The wicket did deteriorate like we thought it would. The first innings let us down quite a bit.”The last two wickets of that collapse were Aiden Markram, who top-edged a pull off Ben Stokes, and Rassie van der Dussen, who was out lbw despite a big stride to defend a delivery that nipped back in.Both batters were under scrutiny going into this match, with averages of 12.6 and 25.9 respectively since the start of last year’s tour to West Indies, and both are likely to be replaced for the next Test. Van der Dussen is out of that match after fracturing his finger at Old Trafford, while Ryan Rickelton and Khaya Zondo are in reserve and allrounder Wiaan Mulder has been called up to the squad.Related

“A few tough decisions will be coming our way,” Elgar said. “With Rassie ruled out, we have to replace him. That’s a definite. Whether that’s the only one we will make … we’ve got a few days. We’ve got nearly two weeks. We’ll go away and get our options and try and get better combinations.”The bottom line is we need runs from that middle order and that is letting us down quite a bit, to be frank and bold and honest. That’s the truth. As much as guys don’t want to hear it, they know that already. But for now, Rassie’s position has to be filled. Whether that’s the only spot, we are not sure just yet.”Selection is a hot-button topic in the South African team after they picked two specialist spinners for Old Trafford, despite their quartet of quicks bowling England out twice for under 200 at Lord’s.In anticipation of a dry pitch, South Africa picked Simon Harmer, who has had success on the county circuit with Essex and against Bangladesh earlier in the year, and left out their only left-armer, Marco Jansen.Elgar explained the decision was based on experience. “Marco is the least experienced player or bowler in the four-pronged pace attack. Lungi [Ngidi] gives us the control and stability, Anrich [Nortje] has got raw pace and he has got a few of the English batters’ numbers and KG [Rabada] is the full package. We thought Jansen was the obvious choice. It was just on inexperience.”That was the same reason he gave pre-series for starting with Markram and van der Dussen, selections which were in keeping with his approach of delivering consistent messages. Elgar said that messaging, unlike the starting XI, won’t change.”I won’t change my way or my approach, that has been pretty sound and unique,” he said. “If I do that now, I will be doing myself an injustice and I will be letting the team down. The guys enjoy the honesty. They understand where they stand with me and it creates an honest platform among the other players.”I will have a few days off now and go back to the drawing board and dissect and have a look at where we could have been better. We’ll sit down and have those chats again. It’s an adult environment. I don’t want to treat a guy like a school kid. That’s not my way. I wouldn’t have liked that when I was a younger player but we will definitely have a few chats.”The teams have an 11-day gap between Tests, and South Africa have not yet revealed their plans. With the Oval Test beginning on September 8, they had a pre-planned break between these matches, which will still go ahead, but Elgar also wants to use the opportunity to remind the squad of their greater purpose, without adding any pressure on them.”Sometimes you can go into panic mode when things like this happen,” he said. “Myself and the coach are not guys to panic. We are still a good side. Sometimes time away from the game is not a bad thing. We will use that period for a bit of connection again within the group.”Let’s pull ourselves towards ourselves and don’t forget why we are here: we are here to win a Test series and we are in a great position to still win a Test series. We’ll clear our minds, let the dust settle and focus on the third Test. It’s set up to be a serious series. I can’t wait for that third Test to start.”
