Will Smeed proved the scourge of Gloucestershire for the second time this season as Somerset guaranteed themselves a home quarter-final in the Vitality Blast with a four-wicket win over their neighbours at Taunton. The visitors did well to recover from nine for three after losing the toss to post 186 for eight, Grant Roelofsen top-scoring with 52, while Jack Taylor (41 not out) and Graeme van Buuren (36) made significant contributions. Matt Henry was the pick of the Somerset attack with 2 for 28.Somerset’s reply of 187 for 6 in 19.3 overs was dominated by opener Smeed, who followed up his 94 in the corresponding South Group game at Bristol, by blitzing 78 off 42 balls, with five sixes and seven fours.Ben Green (37) and Kasey Aldridge (32 not out) clinched victory with a sixth-wicket stand of 48 as the group leaders made it ten wins from 12 games, ensuring a top two finish as their closest pursuers, Surrey and Essex still have to play each other.Related

It seemed Gloucestershire would need a good start to stand a realistic chance of springing a surprise and they got exactly the opposite, losing Miles Hammond and Ben Charlesworth in Henry’s first over, the second of the game. When Craig Overton had Ben Wells caught behind off a lifter, Gloucestershire were in disarray. James Bracey hit a quick 17, including a scooped six off Overton, but he somehow contrived to sky a catch to point off what would have been a leg-side wide from Josh Davey and at the end of the six-over power play, the scoreboard read 44 for 4.Roelofson and van Buuren then produced an excellent stand of 71 in 6.2 overs to revive Gloucestershire fortunes. The 11th over, bowled by the leading wicket-taker in the competition, Green, went for 20 as Roelofsen struck sixes over mid-wicket and square leg.Offspinner Shoaib Bashir, making his home debut for Somerset, bowled van Buuren, who had hit two sixes and four fours, with a ball that turned, but Roelofsen went to fifty off 36 balls before being run out by Tom Abell’s direct hit at the bowler’s end attempting a single to extra cover.Dale Benkenstein, Gloucestershire’s head coach, suggested that Somerset should have recalled Roelofsen after he collided with Henry. “I didn’t think it was a fair dismissal,” he said. “I hold Tom Abell in very high regard and respect him as a cricketer, but I felt it was a very poor decision not to recall Grant.”Their argument is that he should have run around the bowler and they were within their rights to appeal. But had the bowler not been there, Grant would have made his ground and I don’t think it was fair cricket.”

David Payne was also run out, at the non-striker’s end, by some sharp fielding off his own bowling by Green, but Taylor began to enjoy himself, clearing the ropes off Green before being caught at third-man off a Henry no-ball.The reprieve saw Taylor hit a second six, off Henry, and Josh Shaw also managed a maximum off Davey, who responded by bowling the last over of the innings for just three runs.Shaw began the Somerset innings with a wicket-maiden, having Tom Banton caught behind off his second ball. But Smeed retaliated with a six and a four off the second over, sent down by Payne.Smeed then hit Ajeet Dale over midwicket onto the top floor of the flats as 17 came off the third over. But Payne hit back in the next, Tom Kohler-Cadmore skying to mid-on where Gloucestershire skipper Hammond pouched a comfortable catch.Abell was bowled attempting to scoop a full ball from Zaman Akhter and Somerset reached the end of the powerplay on 53 for 3, Smeed having effortlessly lifted another six over midwicket off Shaw.Akhter then yorked Sean Dickson before Smeed went to a 26-ball fifty that thrilled another packed Cooper Associates County Ground crowd. His brilliant exhibition ended in the 13th over when he miscued a pull shot off Dale to van Buuren at long-on.Green smacked a straight six off van Buuren’s left-arm spin as the 14th over went for 16, then cleared the extra cover boundary rope off Shaw. Aldridge provided excellent support and 27 were needed off the last three overs.Green fell to a catch at short fine leg off Dale. But Craig Overton’s six over midwicket and straight four off Akhter left Somerset requiring eight off the last over, bowled by van Buuren. An Aldridge four over extra cover was sandwiched between a brace of twos and sealed the deal to the delight of home supporters.

Tamim Iqbal will be travelling to Dubai and the United Kingdom later this month to have his back injury checked, BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus has confirmed. Tamim, whose retirement-unretirement drama hogged headlines in Bangladesh over the past few days, has been given a six-week break to recover from the injury. His back injury is now thought to be more of a serious concern, as he is seeking medical advice from overseas.”Tamim will be going to Dubai. He will then travel to the UK on July 25 or 26. He has two appointments in London. He will update me from there. We have to name the primary squad of 25-26 players [for the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup] soon, so we need to know his situation. Everyone else will be resting till July 30. Some will go to play abroad. We will restart with a conditioning camp,” Yunus told reporters after the third ODI against Afghanistan in Chattogram on Tuesday.Yunus, however, was non-committal on the captaincy issue – Tamim was the ODI captain before the goings-on over the past few days. “Let him come back first. We will discuss it with him. There’s a matter of his fitness. He said he will talk to us after he returns to the country.”Related

Did BCB chief's comments precipitate Tamim's retirement?

How Tamim Iqbal's un-retirement saga unfolded

Some of the developments around Tamim were connected to BCB president Nazmul Hassan questioning Tamim’s professionalism in a newspaper interview on July 5, where Hassan had also said that head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe had been dissatisfied with the lack of clarity around Tamim’s injury.Did Hathurusinghe overstep his mark by going to Hassan?”I don’t think so,” Yunus said. “We all have discussions. We talk about a lot of things. In his capacity, he can speak to the president at any point. We discuss things regularly. He informs Shahriar Nafees, the cricket operations manager, and the board president and I are in the loop.”Yunus also said that the BCB is open to discussing Mashrafe Mortaza’s role as a team mentor during the 2023 men’s ODI World Cup, something Tamim reportedly suggested to prime minister Sheikh Hasina during their meeting on Friday. “The board will decide. He [Mashrafe] is a member of parliament. He is a former captain. He is a good leader. If he comes to us officially, we will discuss it,” Yunus said.

Wilson fifty hands Storm much-needed victory over Sunrisers

Sophia Smale, Chloe Skelton share seven wickets to defend 165 for 3 in match reduced to 22 overs per side

Fran Wilson scored a blistering 56 to propel Western Storm to a much-needed six-run victory over Sunrisers in a rain-shortened Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy contest at Cheltenham.Alex Griffiths made 46 and Niamh Holland a quickfire 28 as the home side ran up a useful total of 165 for 3 after being put into bat in a match reduced to 22 overs a side.Grace Scrivens and Dane van Niekerk did their best to make a game of it, scoring 39 and 26 respectively to give the chase early impetus. But off spinner Chloe Skelton removed both in the space of two overs to strike a double blow from which Sunrisers were unable to recover.Skelton finished with 3 for 36 and fellow spinner Sophia Smale took 4 for 34 as Sunrisers came up short on 159 for 8, Storm registering their first win in the 50-over format since May to move off the foot of the table.Storm openers Dani Gibson and Griffiths did their best to utilise a reduced four-over powerplay, adding 22 in 3.2 overs before the former was bowled playing across the line for 12 by Eva Gray.Momentum was maintained as new batter Wilson scored at a run-a-ball, driving Gray down the ground for four and then pulling spinner Mady Villiers for another boundary to keep the scoreboard moving. The former England World Cup winner greeted leg spinner Abtaha Maqsood with a swept four and then pulled her through midwicket as Storm passed 50 in the ninth over. Griffiths proved the perfect foil, finding the gaps and rotating the strike as the second-wicket alliance realised 50 from 45 balls.A slow outfield proved problematic for Storm and Amu Surenkumar bowled tidily to restrict scoring from the Chapel End, but Wilson swept Scrivens for four in the fourteenth over to regain the initiative for the hosts.Wilson’s aggressive approach paid dividends when she went to a 45-ball half-century in the grand manner, pulling Surenkumar for six over mid-wicket to register the first maximum of the innings.Surenkumar avenged herself in her next over, Wilson attempting to drive and edging a catch to short fine leg with the score on 113 for 2. Her forthright innings occupied 52 balls, included five fours and a six and served as a crucial mainstay in a progressive stand of 91 in 13.3 overs. In contrast, Griffiths found the boundary only once in compiling 46 from 47 balls before holing out to deep midwicket off the bowling of Surenkumar, who finished with 2 for 37 from five overs. Nevertheless, her innings proved every bit as important as that of Wilson in helping Storm achieve a competitive total.Promoted up the order, England Under-19 international Holland picked up the cudgels at the death, helping herself to four boundaries in a high-octane innings of 28 from 17 balls. Storm captain Sophie Luff weighed in with nine runs, playing her part in a lucrative unbroken stand of 32 for the third wicket.Needing to score at 7.50 an over, Sunrisers’ chase was undermined by the early loss of Cordelia Griffith, the opener smacking a short delivery from Gibson straight to backward point in the third over with the score on 10.Introduced at the Chapel End, slow left armer Smale struck with her first delivery, bowling Jodie Grewcock for one as the visitors slipped to 19-2 in the fifth. van Niekerk immediately demonstrated her attacking intent, hoisting Smale over midwicket for six and then hitting her for four through the same area, but the experienced Phoebe Graham sent down three overs with the new ball for just 10 runs to pile further pressure onto Sunrisers.Lauren Filer proved expensive, conceding 13 runs from the eighth over, to give the visitors encouragement, van Niekerk and Scrivens advancing the score to 66 for 2 at the halfway point of the innings.Chloe Skelton then struck a crucial blow, taking an instinctive return catch to dismiss the dangerous van Niekerk, at which point Sunrisers required a further 96 off 63 balls. Their task became still more difficult when Skelton had Scrivens caught at the wicket by Katie Jones in her next over.Storm missed an opportunity to further tighten the screw, Filer dropping Villers at mid-off on nine off the bowling of Skelton. Encouraged by that mishap, Gray went on the attack, raising 27 from 19 balls before hoisting Smale to deep midwicket. When Smale pinned Amara Carr lbw next ball, Sunrisers were 121 for 6 and needing to score at more than 11 an over.Villers scored 22 off 16 balls, only to hit Skelton to mid-on in the 20th over, after which Storm were able to relax.

Southern Brave hold nerve to inflict Welsh Fire's first defeat of the Hundred

Brave enact revenge on Fire in another last-ball thriller to go top of the women’s competition

ECB Reporters Network12-Aug-2023

Southern Brave went top of the Women’s Hundred table by winning a last-ball thriller against Welsh Fire in front of a record crowd of six and a half thousand for a women’s game in Cardiff.Captain Anya Shrubsole kept her nerve to get a leg bye off the final ball from Shabnim Ismail as Brave chased down the Welsh Fire total of 144-5, Brave finishing on 145-8.Welsh Fire’s Queens of Entertainment have been on the right side of some thrilling finishes, including an earlier four-run victory over the Brave, but this was a first defeat in this year’s competition.Sophia Dunkley hit a half-century for Fire, with Sarah Bryce an unbeaten 44. However, Maia Bouchier, 42, and Smriti Mandhana, 41, laid the foundation for Brave to eventually creep over the line.Welsh Fire had to manage without one of their stars, West Indian Hayley Matthews missing with a shoulder injury, which meant Dunkley joined captain Tammy Beaumont to open the batting. Beaumont departed after a breezy start, caught on the boundary off Georgia Adams, but Dunkley was in sparkling form against her former teammates.England allrounder Dunkley is one of the reasons Welsh Fire have flipped the table this season, going from bottom place to top after the early games. She reached her fifty off just 32 balls, getting good support in a second-wicket partnership from Scotland’s Sarah Bryce.Dunkley went first ball after reaching that half-century, bowled when trying to cut a Chloe Tryon arm ball. New batter Laura Harris upped the scoring rate, though, getting 19 off her seven balls, including a towering straight six off Lauren Bell, before being bowled by Anya Shrubsole going for another big hit.Bryce anchored the innings with an unbeaten 44 off 36, while Adams extended her lead as the competition’s top wicket-taker taking 2-22 off her 20 balls. Shrubsole, with 1 for 21 and Kalea Moore, 0 for 24, were the other most economical bowlers.Fire’s 144-5 was a competitive total, but Brave would have felt they had the firepower to chase. Ismail opened the bowling following on from her hat-trick heroics in the victory over the Pheonix, and she continued in wicket-taking form by dismissing the dangerous Danni Wyatt with her fifth ball.Swansea-born Claire Nicholas was equally tight as Fire conceded just three runs from the first 10 balls. At one stage, two Swansea bowlers were working in tandem in Cardiff when Alex Griffiths joined the attack. The Women’s Hundred top run scorer Smriti Mandhana was soon into her stride for the Brave, with good support from Maia Bouchier. They progressed to 77 at the halfway stage, Dunkley missing a run out chance to dismiss Mandhana when she could not reach the stumps at the bowler’s end.It did not prove too expensive as the Indian lofted the ball to Ismail on the deep extra boundary off the bowling of Freya Davies, to depart for 41 off 30 balls. Bouchier took on the role as the main aggressor, though she was dropped on 35 – a tough chance for Elwiss off Dunkley running back towards long off.Davies took a marginally easier chance shortly afterwards, also running back from mid off, this time off Elwiss’s bowling as Bouchier went for 42 off 26. Elwiss made it two wickets from two balls as Freya Kemp went LBW first ball, and the pendulum swung firmly towards Welsh Fire.Tryon survived the hat trick ball, before Adams kept her side in the game with 40, leaving the bottom order to get over the line by hook or by crook.
