Kiran Carlson 87 the spark as Glamorgan swamp Sussex

Hosts suffer second group stage defeat despite efforts of Daniel Hughes, Tymal Mills

Glamorgan eased to only their third victory in this season’s Vitality Blast as they beat Sussex Sharks by 24 runs under the DLS method at Hove. The visitors laid the foundations for a huge total of 235 for 6 – the third-highest in their Blast history – when they plundered 81 in the powerplay as Sussex badly missed the control with the new ball normally offered by Ollie Robinson, who was absent with a back niggle. It’s debatable if even Robinson would have been able to tame Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson, who hit a career-best 87 off 47 balls before he was caught at extra cover in the 19th over, one of four wickets for Sussex skipper Tymal Mills who is now the competition’s leading wicket-taker with 19.Daniel Hughes led Sussex’s response with 74 off 38 balls, his fourth half-century in this season’s competition, but having been set an unlikely 79 from 28 deliveries following a 50-minute rain delay they finished on 190 for 8 and slipped to their third defeat of the season, although they remain second in the South Group.Carlson and co. set the tone by thrashing 75 in the first five overs after Glamorgan were put in, including 60 in boundaries. It needed a great slower ball by Mills to stymie their progress which Will Smale pulled to midwicket after hitting eight fours and a six in a stand of 79 from just 33 balls. Carlson then put on 72 off 37 with Tom Bevan and 47 off 24 with Colin Ingram to maintain their momentum.Mills was the only Sussex bowler in the first half of the innings to concede less than ten runs in an over and his mood didn’t improve when Tom Clark dropped the ball over the rope while failing to take a catch on the midwicket boundary offered by Bevan.Glamorgan might have fancied posting a score of 250-plus when they had 194 on the board after 15 overs but, spearheaded by Mills, Sussex dragged it back slightly by taking four wickets and only conceding 39 in the final five.Mills led the way with 4 for 29 as Ingram missed a straight one and Marnus Labuschagne drove to mid-on before he snared Carlson, who struck three sixes and nine fours, only to be foxed by Mills’ speciality slower ball with a century in his sights.Sussex were left needing to score at nearly 12 an over but after losing Harrison Ward in the second over Australian Hughes and another left-hander, Clark, added 55 in 27 balls to keep their challenge alive. But legspinner Mason Crane made an immediate impact when he came on in the seventh over with two wickets in his first three balls. Clark was stumped when he missed a googly and James Coles lost his middle stump heaving across the line.Hughes and John Simpson shared 49 off 31 balls but the required rate had climbed to 14.75 when Simpson failed to clear long-on in the 12th over. Hughes hit two sixes off Chris Sole when play resumed at 10.10pm but then he holed out to deep backward-square to effectively end Sussex’s hopes.

ICC moves women's T20 World Cup out of Bangladesh to the UAE

ICC chief executive Allardice has confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board will “retain hosting rights” for the World Cup

The Women’s T20 World Cup will be held from October 3-20•ACC

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 has been moved out of Bangladesh and will now be held in the UAE.”It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement. “I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible.”However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future.”The venue had to be changed by the ICC in the aftermath of the countrywide anti-government agitations in Bangladesh through July and early August, which ended when Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, resigned and fled to India. An interim government has been put in place since, but incidents of vandalism and looting, as well as acts of violence, have been reported from Bangladesh.Related

The Bangladesh government had made last-ditch efforts through the United Nations (UN) to hold on to the World Cup hosting rights, but some countries, including Australia, India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom (England and Scotland) had issued travel advisories to their citizens against travelling to Bangladesh.”I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” Allardice said. The UAE, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe emerged as options to stage the World Cup after the BCCI had rejected the ICC’s offer to host it. The UAE had earlier hosted the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup, along with Oman, when Covid-19 forced it out of India, in addition to staging a number of qualifier tournaments. Matches will be held in Dubai and Sharjah. The ten-team tournament will run from October 3 to October 20.ICC chair Barclay to step down in NovemberGreg Barclay has confirmed to the ICC Board that he will step down as the ICC chairperson after his tenure ends in November.Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected unopposed in 2022.Current directors are required to submit nominations for the next chair by August 27. If there are more than two candidates, an election will take place, with the new chair’s term beginning on December 1.

Wolves now submit £26m offer for "extremely dangerous" Club World Cup star

Wolverhampton Wanderers have now submitted a £25m offer for an “extremely dangerous” forward, who has impressed at the Club World Cup, according to a report.

Wolves looking to sign new forward after Cunha departure

With Matheus Cunha joining Manchester United for a fee widely reported to be £62.5m, Wolves should be able to splash the cash on a replacement this summer, although it will be difficult to find a forward capable of recording similar attacking numbers.

Wolverhampton Wanderers'MatheusCunha

The Brazilian enjoyed two very impressive full seasons at Molineux, regularly providing goals and assists to help propel his side to safety, which was by no means a guarantee for large parts of the 2024-25 campaign.

However, there were some concerns over the 26-year-old’s discipline, with former Premier League forward Clinton Morrison singling him out for criticism back in April, saying: “I think he’s got the quality, I’ve spoken about this. I think his discipline is because he’s not playing with the quality of players and he’s frustrated that the calibre that he thinks he is [isn’t there]. It is a lack of professionalism, don’t get me wrong.”

As such, Cunha’s departure could arguably be a blessing in disguise, and Wolves have wasted little time finding a potential replacement, with a report from Spain revealing they have now submitted a €30m (£26m) offer for Fluminense’s Jhon Arias.

Arias’ impressive performances at the Club World Cup caught the Old Gold’s attention, with his side reaching the semi-final before being knocked out by Chelsea, and talks are already underway over a potential move to Molineux.

There is seemingly a good chance the Wanderers could win the race for the Colombian’s signature too, as he has expressed a desire to play in Europe, despite interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

"Extremely dangerous" Arias could be coup for Wolves

Fluminense have little interest in sanctioning a departure, which could pose a problem for Wolves, but should they be able to tempt the Brazilian club into a sale, there are plenty of signs he could be a solid addition to Pereira’s squad.

The 27-year-old is versatile, able to play on both wings and through the middle, and he has been a regular source of goals and assists for Fluminense this season, amassing 17 goal contributions in 34 appearances in all competitions.

Brazil legend Kaka has also been left impressed by the forward, recently saying: “He has been outstanding in the league for some time.

“He’s an extremely dangerous player who can decide a match at any moment. He has stood out in every competition he’s played in, made history with Fluminense with their Libertadores win, and now he’s looking for a major victory at the Club World Cup.”

Consequently, it is exciting news that Wolves have submitted an offer, with Vitor Pereira in need of a player capable of recording similar numbers to Cunha next season.

Leeds want 255 career-goal star who may be available for under £8 million

Leeds United are probing the market and have now entered the race to sign an experienced forward who has scored over 250 goals at senior level, according to a report.

Leeds United in the market for goalscorers

Without a striker capable of firing against the elite, it is hard to imagine any newly-promoted side managing to maintain their Premier League status.

Daniel Farke will be aware that his side need to act swiftly on the market, hence why Leeds United are firmly pursuing Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz to help offer a distinguished presence in front of goal.

Furthermore, Patrick Bamford is on the radar of Coventry City after being told that he isn’t part of the plans this season at Elland Road, which has left the door ajar for a new striker to arrive.

Wasting no time, Farke recently stated on his future: “I had a really open and honest conversation with Patrick, which was important, He knows how much I rate him as a player and I would have preferred a fit Patrick Bamford for the last two seasons, but he is a player who needs to be the main man.

“He needs an arm round the shoulder after some difficult seasons. I was not willing to tell him he was the main man at Premier League level. In the second day of pre-season, I got him into my office and told him he is not in my plans for the upcoming season.”

Plenty of time remains in the window, but bringing in another forward option after Lukas Nmecha is bound to be on the radar and Leeds could now land themselves a bargain if reports are to be believed.

Leeds United fighting to sign Mehdi Taremi

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Leeds are in the mix to sign Inter Milan striker Mehdi Taremi, who could soon be subject of a £7.84 million bid from Botafogo. West Ham United and Fulham are also interested in the Iran international, who has netted 255 goals across his career for club and country.

The 33-year-old’s agents are in talks over a move to South America, but there is no mention that they are engaging in discussions over a potential path to Elland Road, yet.

Leeds agree deal and book medical to sign new 6 ft 5 star ahead of Newcastle

Labelled “excellent” by Rahman Rezaei, Taremi has been given extra time to assess his options in pre-season and hasn’t returned to training after a return of three goals and six assists in 43 appearances last term.

With his time in Italy looking certain to end, Leeds may be the ideal destination for Taremi to reignite his career at a bargain fee, albeit he would need to improve on his tally if a move to Elland Road were indeed to materialise.

Shot at history kept Rashid Khan on field despite hamstring issue

“I thought I’m able to play, I’m able to bowl, I’m able to stay in the field till the end, why not, I should go for it,” Rashid said after match-winning five-for

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Sep-2024

Rashid Khan picked up a five-wicket haul to derail South Africa•Afghanistan Cricket Board

Rashid Khan was struggling with his hamstring, but he knew his contribution would “be the key” if his team were to pull off a historic series win against South Africa. So, he thought, if he could somehow “stay in the field till the end, why not, I should go for it”. Go for it he did, and finished with figures of 9-1-19-5 to spin out South Africa and hand Afghanistan their first series win against a team ranked in the top five of the ICC rankings.”I got a hamstring [injury], I had it a month before as well, quite unlucky but I tried my best to stay on the ground till the end, tried my best to do for the team as much as I can,” Rashid said after the whopping 177-run win was sealed in Sharjah. “Big opportunity for us as a team you know, to win the series against a big team and that’s what I had in my mind: my contribution will be the key so I have to go and stay till the end.”Rashid has struggled with injuries quite a bit of late. Hamstring trouble had ruled him out of the final week of the Hundred in August, before he returned home to play Afghanistan’s domestic T20s, the Shpageeza Cricket League, and picked up a back niggle. He went on to miss the one-off – washed out – Test against New Zealand. In fact, this ODI series is his first cricket in either of the two longer formats since the 2023 ODI World Cup in India in November last year. After that World Cup, Rashid had undergone surgery on his back, and was sidelined altogether for four months after that.Related

On Friday, Rashid’s 26th birthday, he was batting when his hamstring issues resurfaced. Coming out in the 47th over, he ran a two first ball, and immediately needed the attention of the physio. He continued to bat though, finishing six not out off 12. Would he come back out to bowl, though?”We had a big opportunity to win a series against South Africa and I think the love for this game is just pushing you to play, doesn’t matter how [hard] it is and I thought I’m able to play, I’m able to bowl, I’m able to stay in the field till the end, why not, I should go for it,” Rashid said. “Good job done by the physio as well, to get me ready and deliver for the team.”Afghanistan had one more injury concern on the night, with half-centurion Rahmat Shah going off the field in the 21st over with what seemed like cramps at the time. That, it turned out, was hamstring trouble too. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was hopeful it is not too serious though.”I talked with him, he’s good , maybe he will play the next game,” Shahidi said at the post-match presentation. “But before that also I think he was not feeling good, hamstring happened to him, hopefully he will be okay and play the other game.”Afghanistan have sealed the series 2-0, but have a third game to play, also in Sharjah, on Sunday. After that, they have a bit of a break, with – as things stand – their next scheduled cricket being an all-format tour of Zimbabwe in December-January.

Even better than Hato: Chelsea preparing bid to sign "aggressive" £51m star

Chelsea continue to be more active than most in the summer transfer window, as we’ve come to expect from them.

Already, the newly-crowned champions of the world have signed eight new first-team players, most notably signing João Pedro, who scored twice in the Club World Cup semi-finals against former side Fluminense, before also finding the target against PSG in the final itself.

Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Estêvão Willian have all also arrived to bolster Enzo Maresca’s attacking options, but are the Blues’ recruitment staff now turning their attention to the defensive end of the pitch?

Chelsea targeting new defenders

As has been widely reported, including by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Chelsea are ‘closing in’ on the signing of Jorrell Hato from Ajax, who will cost around £35m.

Matt Law of the Telegraph notes that the 19-year-old’s arrival will ‘ease some of the burden’ on the Blues’ current first-choice left-back Marc Cucurella, albeit he is also capable of playing centre-back too, having started all five of the Netherlands’ fixtures at this summer’s U21 Euros in that position.

Jorrel Hato in action for Netherlands

Central defence is certainly a position of need for Chelsea, with none of Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoît Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levin Colwill nor the injury-prone Wesley Fofana able to establish themselves as the undisputed first choice.

Thus, according to a report by Tutto Mercato, Chelsea are ‘preparing an initial offer’ to Atalanta, as they seek to sign Giorgio Scalvini, claiming he is valued at €60m (around £51m) by la Dea.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Now might be a good time to leave Bergamo, given that legendary manager Gian Piero Gasperini has departed for Roma, while star attacker Ademola Lookman is on his way to Inter, with top-scorer Mateo Retegui having already been sold to Al-Qadsiah.

Thus, James Richardson of the Totally Football Show is forecasting a difficult campaign for the Bergamasque, now led by Ivan Jurić, who Carl Anka asserts might be the worst Premier League manager of all time.

Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini

So, could Scalvini soon swap Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia for Stamford Bridge?

How Giorgio Scalvini would improve Chelsea

Scalvini joined Atalanta as a 12-year-old, accumulating 107 appearances for la Dea, despite suffering an anterior cruciate ligament tear in June 2024, on the eve of the European Championships, which saw him heartbreakingly miss the tournament in Germany.

When he has been on the pitch though, the 21-year-old has earned rave reviews, including from analyst Ben Mattinson, who describes him as “aggressive”, given that he is able to push into midfield and use his outstanding “ball-winning” ability.

Meantime, Akhilesh Ashok of Total Football Analysis believes he is the perfect ‘modern-day central defender’ as he is ‘elegant and technically sound’, also praising his ability to ‘read the game and intercept’ forward passes.

Dharnish Iqbal of Breaking the Lines agrees, impressed by the fact that Scalvini often ‘seizes control of the ball’ by virtue of winning plenty of duels.

So, let’s analyse how he compares to potential future teammate Hato.

As the table documents, Scalvini comes out on top when compared to Hato for all defensive metrics included, when using data from the 2023/24 campaign, given that the Italian missed the vast majority of the most recent season due to injury.

This is not to denigrate Hato, who Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout believes is a “magnificent talent”, while Domagoj Kostanjšak of Total Football Analysis agrees, but notes that the 19-year-old still has a few weaknesses that need to be ‘ironed out and improved upon’.

How much Hato will play at Chelsea next season is also a question mark considering, as outlined by Ahmed Walid of the Athletic, current left-back Cucurella has established himself as one of the club’s most pivotal players.

At centre-back however, as referenced earlier, both positions remain up for grabs, so Scalvini could come in and make an immediate impact, and the Italian certainly boasts the talent to elevate the Blues to the next level.

Pakistan flip approach in hope dead Multan deck comes to life

Hosts turn to spin on used surface with England holding aces after victory in first Test

Andrew Miller14-Oct-2024

Big picture: Rip up the script, and go againThe fans have been out in force in Multan this week, but not, as might be justified, to protest against the failings of a Pakistan team that has now lost six Tests in a row. Instead, they’ve been whirring away at either end of the heavily-watered strip of concrete that doubled as a record-breaking Test wicket during last week’s first Test, willing it to transmogrify into something completely out of character.Desperate times call for desperate measures, but this has been an extraordinary response to last week’s humiliating series opener. To lose by an innings after scoring 556 is akin to being eaten by a shark while sitting at the top of a tree. It’s been an assault on Pakistan’s perception of reality, and an open invitation to paranoia, with the sense that nowhere is safe from an England team that has now transcended the hosts’ conditions to win four away Tests on the bounce.Who knows what awaits after the fans have done their bit, besides a rather lower-scoring contest than was the case over the first five days of this pitch’s existence. The cracks that played their part in reducing Pakistan to 82 for 6 in their second innings are bound to bring the spinners into the game from the outset of this second Test, which could in theory concertina the entire contest and increase Pakistan’s chances of claiming the 20 wickets that so clearly eluded them first-time out.Quite who takes those wickets remains to be seen, however. Of the three seamers who actually acquitted themselves pretty well in miserable conditions last week, both Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah have been dropped, while Abrar Ahmed – Pakistan’s first-choice red-ball spinner – will miss this contest after being hospitalised midway through the last. Mir Hamza was named in the squad as a left-arm new-ball option but has been overlooked in favour of three spinners. Noman Ali, Sajid Khan and Zahid Mahmood are at least experienced spinning options, but none of them has played a first-class fixture in nine months. And, even if it’s hard to imagine the bowling challenge getting any tougher than it was in that first Test, Pakistan’s pitch policy has had the unintended consequence of strengthening England’s batting. On his return from a serious hamstring tear, there’s no way that Ben Stokes could have been expected to shoulder the seam-bowling loads that Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson carried in that game. Instead, with Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir likely to find plenty to keep them interested, he is able to slot back in as the third seamer, and give an already mighty batting line-up an extra layer of menace at No.6.For England, the primary challenge may be a mental one. Harry Brook and Joe Root went to the wall during their epic 454-run stand in the first Test, with the effort of endurance in Multan’s sweltering heat at least equal to that posed by Pakistan’s attack. Finding the will to start again from scratch, especially on what is nominally the same surface, could be an interesting psychological experiment. That said, there are plenty of hungry batters elsewhere in that England order, including both Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who let huge hundreds slip through their own fingers … and the luckless Ollie Pope, who spanked his second ball to midwicket for 0 after taking one for the team as a stand-in opener. Much as Freddie Flintoff might be doing for failed contestants on Bullseye later this year, he then had to “look at what you could have won” as the prizes were paraded before him.Form guidePakistan LLLLL
England WLWWWIn the spotlight – Shan Masood and Shoaib Bashir It was notable how quickly Shan Masood turned his ire onto his bowlers in the aftermath of Pakistan’s innings defeat. On the one hand, he had a point: England claimed 19 wickets (with Abrar absent) to Pakistan’s seven, and so his assertion that “good teams find a way” had some merit. On the other, that ignored a grievous collapse in standards in Pakistan’s second innings, in which Masood himself was deeply culpable. Notwithstanding an excellent 151 in the first innings (which was also his first century since the tour of England four years ago), he should have been caught twice before popping a dolly to midwicket for 11 on that fateful fourth evening. With his departure, it was clear that the fight had gone out of the side that he has now captained to six consecutive losses. With his predecessor, Babar Azam, carrying the can for the batting on this occasion, Masood may be out of excuses if he can’t inspire a fightback over the coming days.Shoaib Bashir, who turned 21 on Sunday, has a huge future and a pretty impressive recent past, with three five-wicket hauls in ten Tests already, including a matchwinning display against West Indies at Trent Bridge this summer. But the sense that he is a work in progress has been exacerbated by his recent performances, particularly against Sri Lanka at The Oval and in last week’s first Multan Test. He lacked control in the former, then was comprehensively outbowled by his Somerset team-mate Jack Leach in the latter, by seven wickets to one in the final analysis. On a surface that is being tailored towards spin, however, he may find encouragement to deploy a more attacking line outside off, having invariably strayed too straight to the stumps in the first Test – partially, you suspect, as a defensive reflex in deeply inhospitable conditions. Either way, he can be grateful for Pakistan’s policy in this contest, as he would otherwise have been the obvious man to make way for Stokes’ return.Team news: Pakistan name three spinners; Stokes returnsChange was inevitable after Pakistan’s catastrophic loss last week… but perhaps not of this ilk. First the selection committee was upended, with Aleem Dar, Aaqib Javed and Azhar Ali joining a panel that has now had 26 members since August 2021. Then the bowling attack was purged, with Abrar ill and Shaheen and Naseem both dropped. Babar makes way in the middle-order after a run of 18 innings without a half-century – it’s over to Kamran Ghulam to fill one of the more sizeable voids imaginable – while the bowling attack will be led by the hard-toiling Aamer Jamal and a trio of spinners. These will include the legspinner Zahid, who claimed six wickets in 18.3 overs in his most recent Test, against England at this very venue two years ago, but got launched for 115 runs in the process.Pakistan: 1 Saim Ayub, 2 Abdullah Shafique, 3 Shan Masood (capt), 4 Kamran Ghulam, 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Salman Agha, 8 Aamer Jamal, 9 Sajid Khan, 10 Noman Ali, 11 Zahid MehmoodStokes is the notable returnee for this second Test, after coming through an extended rehabilitation following his hamstring injury in August. Although there were some reservations about playing him as a frontline seamer in such inhospitable conditions, he has vowed to “sensible” with his workloads – and can at least rely on Leach as an in-form spinning option to provide the lion’s share of the overs. With Matthew Potts slotting in in place of Atkinson, England’s attack has the distinction of fielding three Durham fast bowlers, a prospect that Stokes said would be a “proud moment for the club”.England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Jamie Smith (wk), 8 Matthew Potts, 9 Brydon Carse, 10 Jack Leach, 11 Shoaib Bashir.Pitch and conditions: Spin for the win?If a leopard can’t change its spots, then it’s hard to see how Multan’s strip of rolled mud can be transformed into a spinner’s paradise, just a week after conceding the fourth-highest total ever made in Test cricket. Nevertheless, it is a used surface – which is common enough in white-ball cricket but virtually unheard of in Tests – and it ought to offer more for the bowlers, though quite how much more remains to be seen. Pace and bounce are likely to be short supply once the moisture in the surface has steamed away.
