Newcastle fans react on Twitter as Rafa Benitez’s future at the club is thrust into doubt

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter after The Telegraph revealed that Rafa Benitez will leave the club in the summer unless new signings are brought in this month, as the Spaniard reaches breaking point at St. James’ Park.

The former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is ready to depart the Tyneside club if he does not get the two players he demanded in the January transfer window, with Atlanta’s Miguel Almiron, Juventus’ Moise Kean, Iranian full-back Milad Mohammadi and Lyon’s Martin Terrier mentioned as targets in the aforementioned report.

Benitez would prefer to stay on Tyneside, but feels like his position is becoming untenable having constantly been ignored by Mike Ashley in his pleas for new arrivals.

The relegation-threatened Magpies are set to have another £55million in the bank before the end of the month thanks to television money, but it does not appear that will land in the hands of Benitez to spend on new arrivals.

Understandably, having seen their club constantly neglected by Ashley as they struggle to maintain their Premier League status, Newcastle supporters have grown tired of the situation…

Origi is definitely not the replacement for Kane at Tottenham

According to talkSPORT, Tottenham are planning a shock swoop for Liverpool’s Divock Origi this January as cover for the injured Harry Kane.

The England captain is expected to be out until March with an ankle injury, whilst deputy striker Son Heung-min is away at the Asian Cup with South Korea, leaving Spurs very thin on the ground when it comes to strikers.

Meanwhile, Origi has struggled for playing time this season at Anfield, and is behind Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Mo Salah in manager Jürgen Klopp’s estimation. The 23-year-old has only made three appearances in the Premier League this season, and is unlikely to make many more.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”367086″ player=”13308″ title=”Tottenham Hotspur”]

However, this is a very bizarre decision from Tottenham because, in truth, Origi is nowhere near Kane’s level, nor is he even worth of being cover for him. The Belgian is not a bad player, but there would be a huge expectation on him to perform in the number 10’s absence. It is unclear whether Origi would actually be a better replacement than Fernando Llorente would be, as he is someone that is already settled at the club and manager Mauricio Pochettino knows what he will get out of the Spaniard.

Moreover, this would not send out a good message at all from Tottenham. It is basically saying that the players that are not good enough for The Reds are still good enough for Tottenham. For a club that wants to rival Liverpool for the title, this does not send out a good message. Tottenham are obviously in a crisis at the moment, but there is no need for panic buys like this.

Nottingham Forest should give Mason Greenwood a chance

Nottingham Forest will be hoping to strengthen their play-off bid during the January transfer window.

Having endured a rollercoaster last month or so, Forest will hope to restore some calmness around the City Ground in hope of getting their promotion bid back on track.

It will be a tough ask but Nottingham Forest are a historic club and still currently have players good enough to get the club back up into the Premier League.

Yet their main problem as of late has been scoring goals, an issue generally easy to solve. With the right man brought in, the goals could start flowing again, like their promotion dream.

It would be considered a gamble but given his impeccable form for the Manchester United U18’s, Mason Greenwood should be a genuine target for Nottingham Forest.

Greenwood, just 17-years-old, has been scoring for fun in a Manchester United shirt this season, hence why he has also been seen on the first-team bench on occasion this season.

United fans are, rightly, very excited about Greenwood’s potential and so they should be. With a staggering 22 goals in just 19 games, Mason Greenwood has been in superb form that could even be an asset to a Championship side like Nottingham Forest.

The City Ground side do have a number of goalscorers in their team but none are really doing the business at the moment, hence why Forest could do with another.

Youngster Mason Greenwood must be hungry for a first-team opportunity, which Nottingham Forest could expose him to and both parties could prosper from this deal, especially if he continues to thrive in front of goal.

Newcastle fans react as Mike Ashley misses out on HMV purchase

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club’s owner, Mike Ashley, missed out on the chance to save retail store HMV from administration as Sunrise Records beat him to the punch, as reported by The Chronicle.

Ashley, who also owns Sports Direct along with the Magpies, is public enemy number one at St James’ Park as fans consistently hold up their banners and organise walkouts in the hope that he will sell the club.

The businessman has often been guilty of neglecting the Tyneside-based club, and has been accused of failing to back his managers throughout his time at the club, where he will give them peanuts to spend and then be willing to cash in on any player whose value soars.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Ashley did finally break the club’s transfer record with the £20m capture of Miguel Almiron from Atlanta in January, but fans still aren’t happy with him and have taunted his failed bid to buy the high-street retailer on Twitter…

Klopp clearly thrilled as Naby Keita finally arrives at Liverpool

Following their recent 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, Liverpool appear to have abandoned the poor run of form which saw them concede their advantage over Champions Manchester City. Now, with margins as tight as ever, Klopp hints he has the answer to Liverpool’s season – Naby Keita.

Naby Keita has struggled to adapt to the intensity and skill of the Premier League since his arrival from RB Leipzig at the start of this season and has often been considered one of the major flops of the season.

But now Klopp, who finds himself with two opportunities left to rescue Liverpool from another trophy-less season, sees Keita as one of the club’s saving graces.

“[discussing Bournemouth] It was really nice to see that game and see how the people appreciate it. He is in a lot of situations, passing these little balls through a really tight midfield. It’s just good. And there’s a lot more to come. That was a good one.”, he told Liverpoolfc.com.

Keita has drastically improved in recent weeks, after finally putting together a string of appearances in the starting line-up, and he’s certainly showing signs that he’s growing in confidence.

The trademark dribbles and passes are coming together nicely as he begins to develop relationships with surrounding players and understanding the identity and style of Liverpool Football Club. Much like Fabinho, it’s taken time, but look how well the Brazilian is doing these days.

At their worst, the Reds lack guile in the engine room. Without Philippe Coutinho, the Merseyside giants have looked functional rather than fantastic, so Keita coming to form certainly could help Klopp as the title run in hots up. If he does, it could be advantage Liverpool.

Liverpool will win the Champions League again this year, says Rio Ferdinand

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport (via Metro) that he thinks Liverpool will win the Champions League once again this season.

What did he say?

The former Manchester United defender was talking during Wednesday’s coverage of the European fixtures, and there was a discussion following the conclusion of the final round of matches as to who will lift the trophy this year.

Both Glenn Hoddle and Peter Crouch backed Jurgen Klopp’s men, and Ferdinand also believes that the Reds can win the title once again, saying: “It’s a clean sweep for Liverpool, they just look the more complete team.

“They’ve just got a mentality, once you win, they’ve been on the cusp of winning for a couple of years but they got over that line, they won the big one, the Champions League. They look like they’re going to win the Premier League now, I think they’ve just got a mentality now that they’re not going to lose. Before a ball’s even kicked: ‘We’re not going to lose this game, we’re going to win’.”

Premier League comes first

On current form, it is hard to argue that the Anfield outfit are amongst the favourites to lift the trophy in Istanbul at the end of May. Being holders in itself is enough to give them that fear factor, and their current run of form is something to behold – they are unbeaten in 33 matches in the Premier League, for example, and have won 24 matches of their last 25 in that competition.

However, it is hard to see them prevailing in both tournaments this year. At this point, the league title is the holy grail for the Reds – they have not won it in 30 years, and they are absolutely desperate to be top of the table come the end of the campaign. Having already lifted the Champions League, that is likely to be put on the back burner, especially if there is a sticky period domestically that they need to get through.

Not only that, their worst form this year has come in Europe. They lost their only game of the season in the tournament, 2-0 away at Napoli, whilst they only managed a draw at home. Also, they struggled to beat RB Salzburg, only prevailing 4-3, and they needed a result on the final matchday to even qualify for the next round. Whilst that is the same situation as last year, there was one small difference – they hadn’t won the trophy by that point.

This time around, they may just take their eye off the European competition as they focus on success in England. And, with the calibre of the sides to have qualified being so strong this year – all 16 sides in the first knockout round come from the continent’s top five leagues for the first time ever- they cannot afford to drop their level of performance. This year, the Premier League comes first, and that could be to the detriment of their Champions League campaign.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has suffered another injury blow.

Man Utd letting Ashley Young to depart would rob them of much-needed experience

According to The Evening Standard, Ashley Young “expects to be released” by Manchester United come the end of the current campaign.

What’s the word?

The veteran has been with the club since joining from Aston Villa for a reported £17m back in 2011, and has made an impressive 258 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 times and providing 43 assists.

But with his contract expiring in the coming summer, The Evening Standard have claimed the 34-year-old is yet to open talks with the Red Devils over a possible extension. The report adds that Young’s first-team opportunities are set to be even more limited by the likes of Brandon Williams, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and that he “privately accepts” he will have to move on.

Priceless experience

In his time at United, Young hasn’t exactly been the most popular player on the block. The former Aston Villa man was even booed on the club’s pre-season tour in the summer, and the fact he has to spend a lot of time in recent seasons out-of-position at full-back has been a major factor in his struggles.

But one thing that cannot be under-estimated is his value off-the-pitch. After Antonio Valencia’s departure at the end of last season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named Young as his club captain. And speaking in July after he was jeered in a friendly clash with Inter, the Norwegian said: “I think Ashley is a top professional. He always gives absolutely everything and his delivery today ended up with a goal. We want our fans to support our players and Ash has been a very loyal servant to this club for many years and he will keep on performing when he plays.”

So whilst he may be a scapegoat and target for criticism from fans, Young’s professionalism and work ethic is something that will certainly be appreciated by those in the inner circles of United, both by the players and the coaching staff. As Solskjaer looks to build on this youth revolution at Old Trafford, keeping players like the 34-year-old is vital to ensuring the starlets have role models to look up to. Losing the ex-Villa ace would be a short-sighted mistake.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans have hammered this star after his disappointing display against Everton.

Liverpool fans praise Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu, many want to sign him

Many Liverpool fans on Twitter were clearly impressed with what they saw from Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu on Boxing Day despite the Foxes’ 4-0 defeat to the Reds, with plenty encouraging their club to sign the Turkey international.

Brendan Rodgers’ men went into the clash at the King Power Stadium looking to close the gap to the runaway Premier League leaders, but they were ultimately out-classed throughout by the Merseyside outfit.

One of the big moments in the match actually came when Soyuncu gave away a second-half penalty after handling Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner, with James Milner duly dispatching it to make the scoreline 2-0.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old Leicester man did impress at other points of the fixture, especially on one occasion when he managed to out-pace Mo Salah, which is no mean feat.

Liverpool supporters discussed the former Freiburg man both during and post-match and said they would like to see him arrive at Anfield, with a couple suggesting he would be a good replacement for Dejan Lovren.

Some others were a little more general in their thoughts about signing the 23-year-old, with one suggesting he is the “closest thing I’ve seen to Virgil this season” – high praise indeed considering the big Dutchman was the runner-up for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

However, obviously not everyone was convinced by Soyuncu’s quality and there was also a couple of Liverpool supporters who feel that he isn’t yet good enough to play for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

One even suggested that despite currently playing for a team that is in the top three in the Premier League, that he is nothing more than “a top 8 CB”.

Tottenham fans discuss Tanguy Ndombele after his fine display against Norwich

Tanguy Ndombele has endured a difficult period since arriving in North London last summer but he put in a strong showing against Norwich, and that has offered encouragement to fans.

He has often struggled with fitness and that has been reflected by the fact he has completed 90 minutes on just three occasions in the league, with Jose Mourinho leaving him out of the Boxing Day clash against Brighton because of that reason.

In his defence, many Spurs players have failed to hit their best form this term and the inconsistency throughout the squad means it has been hard for newcomers to adjust, with Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon also having a minimal impact.

They have made 13 and six appearances respectively, less than the Frenchman’s 19 games, who made a big impression on some supporters with his performance against the Canaries.

He has shown potential this year but his glimpses of quality have been too infrequent for him to nail down a starting place, which is disappointing considering he was signed for a club-record £53.8m.

However, he should take confidence from his display against Norwich, and if he can replicate that more often in the second half of the campaign then he will win over fans and his manager alike.

Mourinho’s produced some incredible footballing stars – how much do you know about them?

His strength and skill on the ball allowed him to complete six dribbles and make two key passes, excelling in two areas which reminded some fans of a certain Mousa Dembele.

Spurs have shown encouraging signs under Mourinho but they are still prone to mistakes, with Serge Aurier’s own goal on Saturday epitomising their faults.

Despite that, they are not far from producing results with greater regularity, and there is a lot of truth in the suggestions from some fans that one or two additions to complement Ndombele would help massively.

Fans have also been discussing Serge Aurier once again after the right-back put in a torrid display against Norwich on Saturday.

Everton fans disagree with Carlo Ancelotti not playing Tom Davies vs Liverpool

Everton fans on Twitter disagreed with manager Carlo Ancelotti’s decision not to start and then bring midfielder Tom Davies on in the defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

While Jurgen Klopp decided to make wholesale changes to his team, his Italian counterpart picked a full-strength side at Anfield.

However the decision didn’t pay off as his troops fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against their arch-rivals, in a loss that has to be seen as slightly embarrassing given many of the Reds’ star players were absent.

Ancelotti decided to select Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson in the middle of the pitch at the weekend, ahead of the likes of Davies and Fabian Delph, who were both on the substitutes’ bench.

While Delph was introduced in the second half, his Liverpool-born 21-year-old teammate wasn’t introduced, and they certainly missed his passion and work-rate in the centre.

How much do you remember about football in 2019? Our quiz will test your knowledge…

It wasn’t an impressive display from Schneiderlin and Sigurdsson, who picked up 3/10 and 2/10 ratings respectively for their performances from The Liverpool Echo.

As you can see, Everton supporters weren’t impressed with Davies not being on Ancelotti’s team-sheet.

Everton fans many simply said the 5 foot 11 player should have started against Liverpool, others went into a bit more detail as to why.

While they acknowledged that he might not be the best footballer, they believe he would have been good because he at least “has some heart”.
