Arsenal: The Premier League an awful lot more important than Europe

Last week has left Arsenal with a bit of a hurdle to jump, hasn’t it? It’s certainly not a mountain to climb, because they could progress with a 2-0 win, but it’s still an annoying distraction from the top four race, and the team are now at a crossroads.

The win against United has meant they’re now in a brilliant position to finish in the top four, or even come third, in this season’s Premier League. So priority has shifted from perhaps a Europa League win being their key into the Champions League, to the domestic league holding a great chance too.

It seems sensible now to prioritise the league and field a side in the Europa League that wouldn’t hamper the squad’s fitness for the weekend. If they progress through the competition with that mentality, then great. In the final, they could then go all-out.

However, if they get knocked out, it wouldn’t be such a blow as it would have been if Spurs had maintained such strong form and United would have beaten them at the weekend. There’s belief that Unai Emery and his side deserve to play in the Champions League next season, and it’s hard to argue with that, so it’s important they don’t burn themselves out trying to succeed in both.

Worst case scenario, Emery makes his key men play too many minutes and their performances in both the Europa League and Premier League drop so they don’t earn Champions League through either. That would then hinder the club’s ability to attract the players Emery wants to create a team capable of fighting for the title.

The Premier League should now be the focus, despite Emery’s success in the continent’s second-tier competition.

The Chalkboard: Leaving Chris Brunt out one of Darren Moore’s biggest errors

[ad_pod ]

West Bromwich Albion ended a run of three Championship matches without a win as they beat Swansea City 3-0 at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night, and the returning Chris Brunt played a key role on his return to the XI following Darren Moore’s departure.

On the chalkboard

Well, despite being club captain the former Northern Ireland international has found first-team starts hard to come by since the opening months of the campaign.

He wasn’t helped by injury issues earlier this year, but even when he did return to the fold against Ipswich Town last weekend, he had to make do with being an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw that ultimately saw Moore receive his P45.

The 44-year-old often preferred the likes of Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore and youngster Rekeem Harper in the centre of the park, but caretaker boss Jimmy Shan decided to make a big call by bringing the experienced player back in against the Swans – and it paid off.

Moore’s biggest mistake?

It is one of them, certainly.

Despite some below-par performances in the past the 34-year-old is clearly still a big fans’ favourite at The Hawthorns even if his legs are unable to do what they once could, which is hardly surprising given he has made 401 appearances for the club.

The noise around the stadium when he found the net against Graham Potter’s men said it all and he is clearly a big influence in the dressing room as skipper, which may have worked against Moore when the going got tough.

While he continued to keep the faith with an underperforming Livermore on the team-sheet more often than not, he had someone in reserve who epitomises what West Brom are about, as he showed in midweek.

Sheffield Wednesday: Scotland debut for Liam Palmer is testament to Steve Bruce effect

Sheffield Wednesday full-back, Liam Palmer is in line to make his debut for Scotland in Kazakhstan on Thursday — seven years after last pulling on his national side’s under-21 jersey.

Palmer has been in brilliant form for the Owls, and has played every minute of Championship football for the side since the arrival of Steve Bruce.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, the defender said his thoughts would be firmly on his late grandmother, if he gets the nod tomorrow, and it is through her Lanarkshire roots that the 27-year-old is eligible to represent Scotland.

Referring to her influence on him, he said: “My nan was a massive part of my life. She lived on the road opposite the school I went to as a little boy so every day after school I went there until my mum finished work.

“She loved football and she loved sport. If I had a game for the school she used to walk up the road and come and watch and then get me some food after and things like that.

“She never saw me play for the Scotland youth teams. She passed away just before that. My family on my mum’s side are all obviously really proud and she would have been really proud as well.

“I will definitely think of her. It was a shame towards the end. I went every day to visit her in intensive care. But it would be a great moment if I did make my debut.”

Like the rest of the Sheffield Wednesday side, Palmer has had a resurgence of confidence in the current unbeaten run that the Owls find themselves on and topping it all off with a Scotland cap is thoroughly deserved for the hard-working former academy graduate.

That Wednesday players are being recognised for their scintillating form in the Championship is thanks to the Bruce effect, but the Geordie manager will be hoping that his right back comes through the international break unscathed with such an important stretch of games ahead.

Future England stars: Aston Villa ace Jack Grealish and his international future

[ad_pod ]

It can’t be denied that the England international team has some thoroughly exciting young players coming through the ranks right now, arguably some of the best youngsters in world football.

The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Jadon Sancho and many more are all set to become the spine of the national team in future, but away from the glitz and glamour of the Premier League, which Championship Englishman could be set for a call-up in the near future?

There are a number of names, such as Che Adams and Jarrod Bowen, whose form this season has attracted admiring glances from the top-flight, but one man developing nicely is Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…

The Villans’ academy graduate made his Premier League debut at the age of 18 against Manchester City, having previously been named on the bench as a 16-year-old.

Interestingly, the early days of his career were clouded in controversy, with the attacking midfielder allegedly using laughing gas and acting unprofessionally on more than one occasion – Remi Garde demoted him to the Under-21 side after a wild night out in Manchester.

Nowadays however, a 23-year-old Grealish is finally starting to knuckle down and focus on his football, avoiding controversy and overcoming adversity in a similar way to that of Raheem Sterling.

Grealish, who was also eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland, has managed to score four goals and record four assists in the Championship this season, visibly stepping up to the plate and maturing for his teammates and manager.

The most telling aspect of that statement is the recent Second City derby between Villa and Birmingham, in which Grealish was handed the armband in what is perhaps the biggest game of the season for the fans and for the club’s bragging rights.

After being shockingly assaulted by a fan, Grealish reacted calmly and professionally, refusing to retaliate at a time where a reaction would’ve been more than justified.

Instead, he brushed himself down, got on with things and managed to score the winner in a 1-0 victory at St Andrew’s.

Tottenham were keen on signing him back in the summer, which speaks volumes about his current ability, potential, and his ceiling to improve given Mauricio Pochettino’s desire to get his hands on him and nourish his talent – Grealish himself feels he would’ve received a call-up had he moved to north London.

He has always been tipped for big things since he broke onto the scene, but after a period of stagnation whilst he attempted to find himself and grow out of his immature ways, things are starting to become clearer for a young talent who now has his head screwed on.

He is sure to benefit hugely from his personal growth in the near future though, as will England and Gareth Southgate who have a real talent on their hands.

Hearts: Injury blow could derail top three finish push for Levein

Craig Levein and Hearts have a massive ten days ahead of them, with the Edinburgh derby on Saturday sandwiched between a huge game at Rangers tomorrow and a Scottish Cup semi-final against Inverness the following week.

To be fighting for cup glory and a top three finish is fantastic for the Tynecastle club, but the what they cannot afford, are more injuries.

With on loan striker, Steven Naismith, recovering from knee surgery, the last thing they wanted was to lose their other goal threat, Uche Ikpeazu.

Having scored what turned out to be the winning goal against Aberdeen on Saturday, he suffered a head injury, which forced him off.

With concussion being in the spotlight following the Fabian Shcar incident for Switzerland, it is refreshing to know that the Scottish Professional Football League has strict guidelines for clubs to adhere to, although it is bad news for Hearts fans.

As a result of the injury, Ikpeazu will not be permitted to play against Rangers on Wednesday.

It is a huge blow for Levein and Hearts, but the health and safety of the player must come first.

Levein told BBC Sport: “He’s passed all the tests so far and he feels good.

“Providing everything goes well for the rest of the week, he should be okay for the Hibs match.”

“He won’t make the Rangers game, but I’m pretty confident he will be okay for Saturday,” Levein said.

“The guidelines are very strict, but he was fine on Sunday morning when I spoke to him.”

With third placed Kilmarnock visiting Hibs — who are just two points behind Hearts — on the same night, with Aberdeen playing Motherwell too, Levein would have hoped to have his striker fit, in what could prove to be a pivotal night.

It seemed like a good time to be facing Rangers, a side who are reeling from an Old Firm defeat, and have striker Alfredo Morelos suspended, but the situation has now changed somewhat.

It is a strong likelihood that 21-year-old Craig Wighton will be used as a lone striker in the game now, and Hearts will be looking to play much of the game without the ball, but counter attacking when they have it.

The hope now will be that Ikpeazu will be available for the derby on Saturday, and depending on results on Wednesday, that may become a must-win game for Levein’s side.
