Windass says Howe could raid Bournemouth

With Eddie Howe expected to become the new Celtic manager, there’s an obvious link between the Scottish giants and Bournemouth.

And Dean Windass told Football FanCast that following their failure to win the play-offs and secure a place back in the Premier League, he wouldn’t be surprised to see Howe make a raid on the Cherries squad for reported target Steve Cook, who would be available on a free to Dominic McKay this summer.

Whilst the likes of Ryan Fraser, Josh King and Callum Wilson have since been moved on, Bournemouth still have a handful of players that were relegated from the Premier League last season, which could appeal to Howe should be finally be appointed as Neil Lennon’s replacement in Glasgow.

Reports earlier this month believe that the 43-year-old is expected to be named the new Celtic boss now the season has ended, which should now be slightly more straightforward following Bournemouth’s play-off result.

Howe wanted to bring some of his Cherries coaching staff to Scotland. And whilst that remains a possibility, Windass exclusively told Football FanCast that Paradise could also appeal to a number of his former players, like 30-year-old Cook:

“Is he getting the job? There’s rumours, but there’s no other names being linked. Celtic have got a massive situation now where the pressure will be back on them now.

“In terms of bringing Bournemouth players in, only time will tell. Yes, with Steve Cook and players like that, now they’re in the Championship, would Celtic be appealing to them? Without a shadow of doubt the size of the football club.”

Cricket is a simple game

New Zealand made cricket look the simple game it is today when they bowled accurately, fielded sharply and batted sensibly to beat the Netherlands by eight wickets at Hagley Park on the eighth day of the CricInfo Women’s World Cup

Chris Rosie06-Dec-2000New Zealand made cricket look the simple game it is today when they bowled accurately, fielded sharply and batted sensibly to beat the Netherlands by eight wickets at Hagley Park on the eighth day of the CricInfo Women’s World Cup.The Netherlands did have a couple of moments to savour, an important one being winning the toss. That they chose to bat clearly frustrated the New Zealand captain, Emily Drumm, looking for time in the middle for her batsmen in preparation for tougher challenges ahead.Another couple of moments to savour for the Netherlands came towards the end as they removed New Zealand’s two biggest names, Drumm and Debbie Hockley. But in between it was all the home team. The Netherlands had to go into the game not only without the three leading batsmen who are struggling with injury, they also were without their most effective bowler from the previous match against South Africa, Cheraldine Oudolf, another to join the injury list.Restricted before they started, the Netherlands were strangled by tight pace bowling from Katrina Keenan and Kathryn Ramel initially with the subsequent spin of Catherine Campbell and Erin McDonald so miserly that the Netherlands needed 99 minutes and almost 32 overs to bring up their 50. They had only lost three wickets but, the moment they tried to accelerate, the innings turned to mush.Helen Watson was the main beneficiary, collecting three wickets with her right arm medium pace, two from return catches. However, while Campbell may not have taken a wicket, she returned an astonishing bowling effort, conceding just three runs from her 10 overs.Campbell’s performance earned her the CricInfo Player of the Match award and it reflected the defensive nature of the New Zealand tactics. A ring field gave nothing away to the Netherlands, the pressure of trying to find gaps where there were none proving beyond the underdogs. Their last seven wickets fell for just 13 runs as they failed by two overs to bat out the 50.The 81-run target was never going to be a major problem for the White Ferns but they had clearly learned from the South African stumble on the way to a similarly small target against the Netherlands. They hit the loose balls hard – and unfortunately for the bowlers there were more than they would have liked. They took the quick singles effectively (with the exception of Hockley, run out by some smart work by wicketkeeper Rowan Milburn) and they kept the run rate at such a level that the target was reached seven minutes short of the hour in the 16th over.Paula Flannery, 36 not out, and Emily Drumm, 20 in 18 minutes before Caroline Salomons made her the fourth caught-and-bowled victim of the match, were the main contributors. For the Netherlands, their coach, Greg Curtain, would have liked to have seen another catch taken, Nicola Payne surviving yet another caught-and-bowled chance with the end in sight. It would have been reward for their commitment to defending the small target. However, for one member of his team, it was a bittersweet day. From behind the stumps, Milburn brought off a brilliant piece of fielding, racing around to pick up a ball played away to the off on the edge of the block and scoring a direct hit at the bowler’s end to catch Hockley short of her ground when the former New Zealand captain had looked to be about to collar the bowling. It was a special moment for Milburn, the former Otago keeper on the verge of selection for the team she played against today until “I failed to put the performances together when it counted.”Of the Hockley run out she said it was particularly satisfying because it was such a big wicket. She said she probably had some advantage because she knew many of the New Zealand players “but it was still strange to be out there.” She was coaching the Netherlands under 21 team when, haviung met the residential requirements, she was asked if she would join the Dutch team.”I’m having a great time and they’ve accepted me – or seem to have. My aim is to try to my best for Holland.”Certainly her keeping skills, standing up to all the Netherlands bowlers, and her batting contribution today, 20 from 99 balls against the tight New Zealand attack, suggest that the Netherlands did well out of the deal.New Zealand now go on to a much tougher assignment, against India on Saturday while the Netherlands begin their test matches of this tournament, the first one against Sri Lanka on Sunday. The result: The Netherlands 80; New Zealand 81 for two; a win to New Zealand by eight wickets.

Celtic: Hoops eyeing Newcastle United stopper Freddie Woodman

Celtic are reportedly interested in a swoop for Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, according to the Chronicle.

The Lowdown

After spending the season on loan at Swansea City [Wales Online], Woodman has fallen behind in the Newcastle United pecking order. Facing stiff competition Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie, he may now look to cement a future as a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere.

Given his 20 clean sheets in 45 Sky Bet Championship appearances this campaign [Transfermarkt], there is no surprise at that teams are looking to tempt the 24-year-old to Glasgow.

The Latest

Celtic are no strangers to struggles within the goalkeeping department. Vasilis Barkas, Conor Hazard and Scott Bain could not nail down the number one berth between the sticks in 2020/21.

In need of fresh ideas if they are to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title from Rangers at the first attempt, Woodman would provide a reliable last line of defence at Celtic Park based on his form at Swansea.

The report claims another loan exit could be on the cards for the Magpies ace, and also references interest from the Hoops back in 2018 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge.

Southampton have also been credited with an interest in the London-born stopper [Scottish Sun].

The Verdict

Moving to secure the talented goalkeeper would be a shrewd move in a summer of major reconstruction at Celtic Park. Taking his age into account, he could be a long-term solution to a problem position that has plagued the Celts in recent months.

Described as ‘excellent’ by his former goalkeeping coach Billy Thomson, there are certainly merits to his potential acquisition. Ironically, he could finally provide Celtic with a replacement for former fan favourite Fraser Forster who was originally signed from Newcastle United on loan in 2010 [Guardian].

In other news, Celtic’s pursuit of a striker is being stalled due to recent developments.

Celtic: Fans slam Neil Lennon

Plenty of Celtic fans have slammed Neil Lennon on social media after he hit out at a section of Hoops supporters for ‘giving the club a bad name’.

Celtic’s season started off strongly under the 49-year-old, but their 2020/21 campaign quickly deteriorated before Christmas and ultimately ended with no trophies.

The former Hoops manager, who resigned back in February, was talking about protests from some Celtic fans following the club’s 2-0 defeat to Ross County last November. County ended the Bhoys’ run of 35 straight domestic cup wins, with ugly scenes from a section of supporters at Parkhead after the match.

Speaking to The Times, with quotes relayed by the Daily Record, Lennon said:

“Speaking to the players the next day (after the League Cup loss) they were really disturbed and upset by that.

“Literally upset by it. That was the first cup defeat in 35/36 games. It was the end of an unbelievable cycle of success and for them to be treated that way was bewildering. They should have been lauded for it rather than abused.

“They were getting pelted with missiles. It was very sad. There was a new breed of supporters that I had nothing in common with and who belie the values of the club.

“They are the ones that are giving the club a bad name.

“It was definitely a situation like no other. You’re going for the tenth title in a row and that was an obsession for the fans, an unhealthy obsession I felt. And we were in the midst of a pandemic where nothing was normal.

“You are in the game to enjoy it. It was all about the football but this season football took second place to a lot of things.”I wouldn’t say I was hurt, I was more bewildered by it and the lack of time and the lack of faith that people showed in me.”It’s basically fans I’m referring to more than anything else.”I can walk away with 21 medals as a player and a manager, the first guy to do the treble as both a player and a manager. If that doesn’t mean a lot to other people, it means a lot to me.”

Celtic fans react

The Daily Record shared Lennon’s comments on their Twitter page on Saturday morning, and their post unsurprisingly received plenty of interaction.

These Hoops fans were quick to vent their frustrations back at the club’s former manager, with a selection of responses available to view below.

“A manager surely brings responsibility. Trying to deflect, deary me.”Credit: @kevinwalsh1964″I loved Neil Lennon as a player. The fight, desire, passion. As a manager he sat in the dugout with his feet up watching us get beat. Interviews like this, living on the success of previous managers while taking no ownership are insulting and disrespectful.”Credit: @AshleighMeikle”This is so utterly delusional and trying to support his mates on the board that it’s laughable. HE was the main problem- his outdated lack of tactics other than switching wingers was his downfall, not the fans’ fault. This is Pravda trying to be divisive via NL.”Credit: @howlinwhippet”Seriously???”Credit: @K5VVM”bewildered”Credit: @kieranwrigg”He’s at it”Credit: @ccww1967

Central Districts take the win and set up third final tomorrow

Canterbury was forced to a third final tomorrow in its bid to retain the Shell Cup this summer after Central Districts took a 45-run win off it tonight at Jade Stadium in Christchurch

Lynn McConnell27-Jan-2001Canterbury was forced to a third final tomorrow in its bid to retain the Shell Cup this summer after Central Districts took a 45-run win off it tonight at Jade Stadium in Christchurch. In only the second year of the best-of-three format, CD became the first side to beat Canterbury, and it did so in memorable fashion.Canterbury’s effort in chasing 174 to win was a calamity.Glen Sulzberger, who earlier this summer was despatched to Africa as a replacement player for the CLEAR Black Caps, was the star turn of the evening with bat, ball and in the field.CD coach Dipak Patel was full of praise for him.”His effort was outstanding. He did the inspirational things you look for in a game like this. He put his hand up tonight,” he said.CD could thank its last partnership for its success. Sulzberger and No 11 batsman Brent Hefford added 49 unlikely runs. Sulzberger was the last man out, in the penultimate over, when caught from Astle’s bowling for 43. Hefford’s effort resulted in 16 not out.”When I went out there were still half the overs left and when Heff came out there were still 15 overs left. I wanted to bat as long as I could and to face as many balls as possible,” Sulzberger said.”While there were times when I turned down runs, I knew that if we stayed there we could afford not to take those runs.”Luckily we hit a few boundaries towards the end.”We were talking all the time. I was mainly impressing on him that he couldn’t get out then as he got his confidence he was much happier about facing more of the bowling.”It just goes to show what you can do when you do the small things right,” he said.Sulzberger said the side’s batting has been a little bit of a worry this season but the players knew that if they had scored the runs in the first game they could have been 2-0 up and holding the Shell Cup already. He rated picking up Doody’s wicket with his first ball a highlight because it put pressure on the other batsmen.”There was always the Chris Harris factor. He was in a position where he had to be there at the end, and that put pressure on the other batsmen as well. Things worked in our favour and I picked up three. That’s the first time I’ve got three in a Cup game so it was nice to get them in a final.”The most pleasing thing was the whole team fought right to the end. We didn’t give it away.”It was a case of the shoe being on the other foot from the first final in Napier. On that occasion CD was left lamenting its chance when chasing and missing out by 13 runs. Canterbury produced a superb bowling and fielding effort in defence of its total then.CD repeated the dose tonight and could claim to have done it even better. However, Canterbury would have due cause to debate the dismissal of wicket-keeper Gareth Hopkins. CD bowler Andrew Schwass was certain he had Hopkins edging a catch to wicket-keeper Bevan Griggs.Griggs seemed to have to think about it before joining the appeal. Umpire Billy Bowden shook his head as if dismissing the appeal. Schwass was disappointed to have the appeal declined and then looked up again to see Bowden with his finger crooked and the batsman given out.Brad Doody looked as if he was going to play the big innings Canterbury needed to assure itself of the win. He played with a confidence none of the other batsmen managed, much in the same way that Ben Smith showed for CD while scoring 35.However, he succumbed to Sulzberger’s first ball of the innings. He was caught at the wicket by Griggs standing up.Earlier, Nathan Astle was out for a duck, a score repeated by fellow CLEAR Black Cap Craig McMillan, although McMillan was out to the first ball he faced.Canterbury tempted the fate often suffered by those who change their batting order around. Stephen Cunis, who came in at No 3, did what was required of him by scoring 24 by chancing his arm. He gave the momentum to the innings that was required, but the work was undone immediately with McMillan’s dismissal.Gary Stead, who can usually be relied upon to graft his way out of trouble, was out for two when turning a ball from Brent Hefford to square leg where Smith took it with delight.Again it was Chris Harris who refused to follow the trend and who kept the hopes of a good-sized crowd alive.Earlier, Stephen Cunis unleashed an inspired spell of bowling to pick up the wickets of Mathew Sinclair for 19, Smith and Jacob Oram for one. His nine overs resulted in 3-26.Patel felt the side could win the game even with their low score.”At the tea break Jacob [Oram-captain] came up to me and said he thought 180 would have been a good total.”So we knew that if we bowled as well as we have in our earlier games, and got some early wickets, we could do it,” he said. What was especially pleasing was the fact the side had shown great patience, especially when Chris Harris was looking as if he might do the job and drag Canterbury back up.”The captaincy of Jacob Oram was tremendous under the pressure,” Patel said. The side had not bowed to all the media talk which installed CD as the underdog, a situation which would leave it vulnerable on Jade Stadium and in front of a parochial Canterbury crowd.”The guys showed the character required to be competitive at this level.”We out-played them today,” Patel said.
