Pundit claims Paratici at fault for bizarre Ronaldo - Exclusive

With the news of Fabio Paratici set to be unveiled as Tottenham Hotspur’s new General Manager, Get Italian Football News’ editor in chief Conor Clancy has claimed that the former Juventus man was part of the strange Cristiano Ronaldo signing.

Paratici is set to be unveiled as the newest member of Spurs’ hierarchy and that will also see Daniel Levy take up a new role at the club as he steps back and allows Paratici to oversee all football matters.

Levy has received a lot of abuse and criticism for his lack of footballing nous and more recently, his failure to find a replacement for Jose Mourinho despite several candidates coming by before eventually disappearing off into the distance with other clubs or just turning Spurs down.

Paratici was given a farewell press conference by Juventus, however, some of his signings have left the Old Lady in a difficult position financially with the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Ronaldo earning big money and Clancy spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern about the latter:

“He was there when they signed Cristiano Ronaldo and that is probably one of the most bizarre transfers ever to take place in football.

“It was so against everything that Juventus were supposed to be about.”

Tottenham need someone who is familiar with the transfer market and knows what players are worth and that is something Paratici could bring as he did sign the likes of Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal before they were household names in European football.

Spurs fans have seen their club waste money on a whole host of players such as Roberto Soldado, Matt Doherty, Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela so they must sort out their recruitment if they are to be regular top-four challengers.

Test on a knife edge after Sri Lanka fight back

Before the start of play there was a Perehena (traditional procession) withfour festooned elephants, led by a whip-cracking Kasacarya and trailed bygyrating Kandyan dancers. They willed the Gods to look kindly on theircricketers and conjure up a miraculous recovery. The heavens appeared to belistening too because seven hours later both sides still have realistic hopesof winning this game – Sri Lanka need six wickets and England require 70runs.Sri Lanka, starting the day just eight runs ahead with four wicketsremaining, frustrated England as they added a further 152 runs to leave apotentially tricky last innings target of 160. When Chaminda Vaas thenteased out Atherton for the fourth time in four innings and then trappedTrescothick lbw four balls later with just 25 runs on the board, theElephants would have believed their early morning amble to have beenworthwhile.

Graham Thorpe though has shown himself over the years to be a man for themoment. In fading light in Karachi three-months ago he pushed and nudgedEngland to a dramatic series victory. This evening he adopted a moreforthright approach and pointedly attacked Muttiah Muralitharan from thestart, hitting him for 20 runs in his first two overs. The Surrey batsmen added 61 precious runs with a limping Nasser Hussain, apartnership that looked to be guiding England towards a memorable victory.Twenty minutes before the close, however, Muralitharan wreaked his revenge ashe was well caught by Sangakkara for 46. Vaas then found the outside edge of the England captain and the game was back in the balance at 89 for four.England still have their noses ahead, but as Dav Whatmore said tonight itwill come down to who holds their nerve: “I was really pleased to see some ofthe old Sri Lankan fight with the bat today. It’s very close now and thereis going to be a lot of pressure tomorrow. I think it will come down towhich team holds their head.”Sri Lanka are still in with a chance because of a player who is a recurrent visitor to the match referee’s room. Sangakkara was in the dock again today after his unsightly, though essentially childish, spat with Michael Atherton. Both players received a severe reprimand.Today though he will be better remembered for an innings of silky class. This is just his eighth Test match, but he revels under pressure and hasproven himself to be no shirker. With Sri Lanka effectively eight for six,he could well have felt their fate inevitable and succumbed lamely. He didn’t. He revealed his inner strength, carefully selecting which ball to punishand which to be respected.

With Kumar Dharmasena giving him stoic support he survived until, on thebrink of lunch and five runs away from a maiden Test century, his mind wentblank and he impetuously charged Robert Croft. The ball spun past hisoutside edge and he was stumped by yards. England were jubilant – 30 moreminutes of the wristy left-hander and they would have been faced aformidable target.”We looked to occupy the crease this morning, but were determined to hit theloose balls,” he said afterwards. “I was distraught to get out when I did. Idon’t know what came over me. I knew that lunch was just around the corner, but I just lost my concentration and played a very poor shot.”I think it is balanced evenly, although perhaps a bit over to the Englishside. But, if we take a couple of wickets tomorrow morning that willdefinitely change.” He was impressed with the innings of Thorpe: “He waswilling to take the bowlers on and was always going score runs quickly. Wewere very happy to see the back of him.”Kumar Dharmasena also played his part, scoring his third half-century inTest Match cricket, as did Chaminda Vaas who made 36.Once again it was Darren Gough who proved the key bowler. England took thenew ball in the 80th over and in the 87th he caught the shoulder of Dharmasena’s bat. Graeme Hick leapt at second slip to take the catch one-handed. In his next over he grabbed Nuwan Zoysa’s wicket too, also caught byHick at second slip.Craig White wrapped up the innings as Vaas tried to blast him through the off side and was caught by Croft in the covers.

Bielsa may be worried after Leeds transfer update

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa may be worried after the latest transfer update to come out of Thorp Arch.

What’s the story?

The Whites enjoyed a superb return on their first season back in the Premier League, finishing in ninth place, and picking up some impressive results along the way – not least ending on a four-match winning streak.

But, it appears Bielsa’s side are set for a quiet start to the summer transfer window, with Leeds Live’s Beren Cross admitting that fans shouldn’t expect a “flurry” of incomings for now.

And, via his official Twitter account, Cross said: “The transfer window officially opens today, but don’t expect a starting pistol and a flurry of eight-figure deals. Leeds remain hopeful signings will be made before pre-season. #lufc”

Bielsa may be worried

When a transfer window opens, one of the main things managers will have stressed to the club is the importance getting deals done as soon as possible.

That can help in a multitude of ways, not least ensuring they don’t go late into the window stressing about what they still need to do, and it also allows the players who do arrive to join up with pre-season and get to know their teammates and manager better so that they can hit the ground running when the season starts.

It’s no surprise that Victor Orta himself meanwhile has recently admitted that he will do everything in his power to try and ensure Leeds’ business gets done as quickly as he can.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show back in May, he said: “It’s a strange market, I think obviously I want all the new players to start pre-season. I still have a long month of June and obviously, I hope that (in) the month of June we can finish the job.

“We can put our effort but it is not always just our side. Perhaps from our side, it is all done but there are a lot of people involved and it is out of our control.”

With it now approaching mid-June, and Leeds still looking no closer to clinching their first signing of the summer, let alone the rest of their business, Bielsa may be starting to get worried about when the Whites will kick things into gear.

Meanwhile, a journalist has dropped an exciting transfer update on this Leeds target…

Series interestingly poised as Harbhajan works his magic again

The next time the Australians come to India, they might well ask for achange in playing conditions

Anand Vasu21-Mar-2001The next time the Australians come to India, they might well ask for achange in playing conditions. Instead of the standard three sessionsof play, the Aussies could ask for just two sessions a day. After tea,the Australians seem to freeze up, lose their footing and with ittheir wickets. On three occasions in the series so far, theAustralians have lost seven wickets in the last session of play. Inturn Harbhajan Singh operating after tea is like the mythical werewolflooking up at the full moon. First there’s a loud howl asking thequestion, then there’s the kill. With 5/82, Harbhajan Singh pegged theAussies back to 241/7, leaving them leading by 131 runs with one dayto play in the third and final Test against India at the MAChidambaram stadium on Wednesday.Beginning the day on 480/9, there was not much the pair of SairajBahutule and Nilesh Kulkarni could look forward to. Unlike some of thebatsmen who followed him out to the middle, the Mumbai legspinner didnot attempt any ambitious strokes. For company Bahutule had Mumbaiteam mate Kulkarni. As it happened, the pair belied expectations andplayed out more than 45 minutes, frustrating the visitors. When thelast wicket fell, India had managed to extend their score to 501 andlead to 110 thanks to an unbeaten 21 from Bahutule. The Aussies in turn began very well, going in to lunch without losinga wicket. In this Australian team you cannot find two cricketers whohave had more contrasting tours of India than the opening pair.Matthew Hayden came to India as an effective batsman but a bitvulnerable against spin bowling. Almost never failing, Hayden hasbatted with panache taking on anything the spinners dished out.Michael Slater came to India with a reputation of being a flashystrokemaker, someone who would blaze a trail and give Australia theinitiative early on. Failing with the bat, Slater has also compoundedhis woes by getting into an unnecessary fracas over an umpiringdecision. In their own disparate yet equally effective ways, Slaterand Hayden were unbeaten on 34 apiece when lunch was called. After the break however, everything changed. Perhaps it’s the heatthat’s getting to the Aussies, perhaps the pressure. On a wicket thatis not yet doing anything that a fourth day wicket should not do, thevisitors lost wickets at regular intervals. Matthew Hayden was thefirst to go, playing a shot he has employed with great success.Heaving Kulkarni towards midwicket, Hayden departed as Zaheer Khanrunning in from the fence completed a good catch. Hayden had made 35,and was Kulkarni’s second wicket in Test cricket, coming 589 ballsafter the Mumbai left arm spinner picked his maiden wicket, way backin August 1997 at Colombo.Adam Gilchrist was promoted to number three, a move that was a biggamble in the best of circumstances. Having scored just one run in hisprevious three Test innings, Gilchrist could not have been in apositive frame of mind. Padding up to a ball from Harbhajan Singh thatdid not turn as he expected, the Australian stumper was trapped plumbin front for one.Slater looked like he might be coming out of a lean patch. Afterstroking the ball confidently early on, Slater failed to come good.Edging Harbhajan Singh to VVS Laxman at slip, Slater departed justwhen a big innings was needed of him.Justin Langer, coming in at number four began by playing well withinhimself. When the ball was there to be hit, Langer lofted well, hissix over midwicket off Kulkarni a case in point. However Langer toocould not go on, falling to the Harbhajan-Laxman combination. Langer’s21 propped up the Australian total but clearly did not do enough.Mark Waugh got into a very good rhythm against Sachin Tendulkar, bowling his leg breaks from the V Pattabhiraman Gate End. AlthoughTendulkar managed to get a fair bit of turn from the rough, Mark Waughsteadily grew comfortable. Despite getting well set, he fell to aspinner. The manner of his dismissal was not new in any respect.Harbhajan Singh tossed up an off break on middle and off that grippedthe wicket and spun into the right hander. Going back and across Waughturned the ball round the corner. Rahul Dravid at backward short leg, showed superb reflexes, plucked the ball out of the air. Waugh hadmade 57 (142 mins, 139 balls, 7 fours), the highest by an Australianat that point.Ricky Ponting, under pressure the moment he came on fell to the guileof Harbhajan Singh. Prodding at a ball that bounced a bit more than heexpected, Ponting gloved the ball to Dravid at forward short leg. The11 that Ponting managed was by far his best score in Test innings thisseries.Steve Waugh though continued to prove that he is the man for crisissituations. Unbeaten on a doughty 43, the Australian skipper washowever without a partner after the last ball of the day. Padding upto Harbhajan Singh, Warne was rapped on the back leg right in front ofthe wickets. The finger went up and Australia had lost their seventhwicket on 241.

Butler keen to make most of opportunity for New Zealand

It’s all been happening rather quickly for Ian Butler over the last 24 hours but he was pleased to get his first training run behind him and to meet most of his new team-mates in the CLEAR Black Caps in Christchurch today

Lynn McConnell12-Feb-2002It’s all been happening rather quickly for Ian Butler over the last 24 hours but he was pleased to get his first training run behind him and to meet most of his new team-mates in the CLEAR Black Caps in Christchurch today.Butler, 20, of Northern Districts will make his international debut at Jade Stadium tomorrow, weather permitting, as New Zealand take on England in the first One-Day International of the National Bank Series.Even if only half the ground capacity is taken up for tomorrow’s game, the crowd of 14,000 will be far greater than anything else Butler has ever played before. And even the prospect of finding out how fast he bowls will be a new experience.Questioned at a press conference today about how fast he bowls, he replied: “I don’t know, I’ve never been on the radar.”Butler, who only made his first-class debut this summer, said his goal for the summer had been to perform well for ND and to maintain a spot in that side.”This came completely out of the blue, but I will give it my best shot,” he said.At least he knows what it is like to have bowled at the English batsmen. He played in both ND’s one-day games against the tourists on Friday and Sunday.”What those games showed me was they can be beaten, and it was good to play against them before I have to step up to this level to play them,” he said. The Pukekohe-raised bowler has played all his youth cricket in ND, and for New Zealand Under-19.He said that new ND coach Bruce Blair had been a big help to him.”He’s helped me a lot and given me a lot of confidence to go out there and bowl fast and straight. That’s all he says to me, ‘don’t complicate things’ so that’s all I do, go out there and bowl fast and straight.Having been rushed from obscurity into the limelight he was pleased to have that first practice behind him. While there he had a chat with Chris Cairns which had been a boost.”It was good to get a training out of the way and talk to all the lads and get the nerves out of the way,” he said.”I’ll just have to brush that aside and let it help me,” he said of the moment when he first grasps the ball and runs in to bowl. Most encouragingly of all was the fact that so far in his career he has never suffered any significant injuries.”Touch wood, I’ve had none so far,” he said.

Crystal Palace linked to Radu Drăgușin

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Juventus defender Radu Dragusin ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (print version via Tutto Mercato Web), the Eagles have made an offer for the highly-rated 19-year-old as they prepare for life after Roy Hodgson.

The report doesn’t state the exact sum that Palace are believed to have offered for Dragusin and claims that the Romania Under-21 international would be open to staying with the Turin giants if Merih Demiral is sold.

Parish must swoop

A new contract was signed by the former Regal Bucharest academy graduate as recently as April, appearing to end any chance of a summer exit for the youngster.

However, it appears as though Dragusin could still depart Juve over the coming months as Massimiliano Allegri plans an overhaul of the Serie A outfit.

It could present a perfect opportunity for Palace chairman Steve Parish to snap up one of Europe’s best teenage centre-backs, and he must swoop for prodigy before another interested party pounces.

Although Dragusin doesn’t have an abundance of first-team experience, making just four appearances for the Old Lady’s senior side, his arrival at Selhurst Park is much-needed.

The Eagles are in desperate need of young players over the imminent window in order to lower the average age of their squad, which was the oldest in the Premier League last season.

They also have real problems in the heart of defence. Mamadou Sakho, Gary Cahill and Scott Dann are all set to become free agents when their current contracts expire at the end of the month, meaning reinforcements will be desperately required.

After impressing in a 20-minute cameo against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League group stage, former Juve manager Andrea Pirlo was quick to praise Dragusin’s development.

“He’s physically very strong. He’s very young and must develop on a technical level, but he will have time to do it, training every day with great champions,” said Pirlo in his post-match press conference.

Therefore, news of his potential arrival will surely have the Palace supporters buzzing as the club enters a treacherous transitional period. At long last, the club are beginning to target young players who they can build for the future or sell on for a greater fee.

That business method has eluded them in years gone by so this deal would be timely from Steve Parish, one that provokes a sense of relief from supporters at Selhurst Park.

And, in other news…Worse than Nuno: Palace must avoid potential Hodgson successor with 42.51% win record
