Haggerty drops Fraser Forster verdict amid Celtic transfer link

The Celtic Way journalist Anthony Haggerty has issued his verdict on Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who is reportedly a target for the Glasgow giants once again.

The Saints stopper, who has already njoyed two spells at Parkhead, has been linked with a summer return to Celtic on loan, according to The Scottish Sun.

Forster was previously at Celtic Park back in 2019/2020 having joined the south coast outfit from Celtic in 2014, and after falling down the pecking order at Southampton behind Alex McCarthy, could look for a move back up north.

The shot-stopper was in inspired form in his previous spell with Celtic, keeping 17 clean sheets in 39 games, one of which came in the Scottish League Cup Final against Rangers, and Haggerty was full of praise for the goalkeeper, telling FFC: “Celtic won that cup final because of Fraser Forster, he was immense”.

Forster’s Southampton contract runs out at the end of this season (2022) and if he isn’t in the plans of Ralph Hasenhuttl at St Mary’s, he may opt for a move away this summer to get some game time.

Haggerty believes that Forster is well suited to the Hoops and couldn’t believe the goalkeeper didn’t return to Celtic Park, saying: “I think some people suit certain clubs and I think Forster suited Celtic, I couldn’t understand it when he never came back”.

Waqar offers no excuses for Pakistan's exit

Pakistan captain Waqar Younis offered no excuses as his team made an early exit from the Morocco Cup Sunday

Special Representative20-Aug-2002Pakistan captain Waqar Younis offered no excuses as his team made an early exit from the Morocco Cup Sunday.”I have no excuses to offer. The simple fact is that we played poorly throughout the tournament. The bowling was better but it was the batting that let us down in the competition. We tried our best but things just didn’t work,” Waqar said in a post-match conference Sunday evening.Pakistan lost three of the four matches after starting the competition as odds-on favourites following their sequence of impressive victories since the tour to England last year that led to triumphs in two tournaments and four one-day series.”We are sad and bitterly disappointed. It was not a result we were expecting. But there is nothing to get panic about as this is the first tournament in over a year that we have lost. We are confident that we will manage to lift ourselves for future assignments though at the moment, the morale of the team is really down,” he said.It is hard to believe that with Wasim Akram coming out to bat at No 10, Pakistan failed to get 197 for victory against South Africa the other day after Shahid Afridi had placed them at 92 for two in 18 overs with a whirlwind innings.”We lost the momentum after Shahid’s dismissal. I think the turning point was the dismissals of Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan off successive deliveries. At one stage, we had bonus point in our range but we lost our way with those two wickets and then the unfortunate dismissal of Inzamam-ul-Haq was the final nail in the coffin.”Yousuf played a poor shot but rest of the wickets were due to good bowling by South Africa,” Waqar said. The skipper defended the team selection and decision to send Shahid at one-down position after having demoted to No 9 a day earlier against Sri Lanka.”Sending Imran Nazir and Shahid would have led to a chaos because they are hard-hitting batsmen and we were chasing a small total. Saqlain Mushtaq was a touch and go decision and in the end we preferred to include Shoaib Malik to give depth in the batting because we didn’t know what total we might have to chase,” Waqar said. The pacer, who finished with 11 wickets in the tournament, admitted that so much talent also sometimes becomes a problem in the backdrop of his strategy of rotating the players.”We are rotating players because there is too much cricket ahead and I believe that one-day cricket is now allrounders dominated game. You look at Sri Lanka and South Africa, they have more allrounders than any other team,” he argued.Whatever might Waqar feel, the simple fact is that Pakistan got the team composition wrong throughout the tournament. Playing with just five bowlers was always expected to be a gamble that continued to backfire, particularly in the last two matches. Pakistan reduced Sri Lanka to 53 for three but allowed them to reach 242 while against South Africa, Pakistan reduced them to 49 for five but failed to capitalize.”Shoaib Akhtar’s return will definitely bring more firepower in our bowling for the upcoming tournaments, Waqar said. After Shahid’s onslaught, Youhana and Inzamam got ultra cautious and allowed South Africa to tighten the screws around them. The two batsmen added just 28 runs from 71 balls after Shahid’s dismissal instead of rotating the strike.

Whites eye up Josip Brekalo move

Leeds United are interested in signing VfL Wolfsburg winger Josip Brekalo this summer, according to a fresh report which emerged on Monday.

The Lowdown: Wide depth required

The Whites excelled in the Premier League last season, with Raphinha and Jack Harrison arguably two of their standout players.

The pair chipped in with a total of 14 goals and 17 assists between them in the league and they should continue to be key men moving forward.

Despite their quality, Marcelo Bielsa may be on the lookout for a new signing who could provide competition in wide areas, in order for the depth in the squad to be improved.

The Latest: Leeds keen on Brekalo signing

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Leeds are eyeing up a summer move for Brekalo, who scored seven times for Wolfsburg in the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign.

The Whites reportedly ‘appreciate’ the 23-year-old as a player and are considering making a move, along with Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid.

The Verdict: Strong option to sign

Brekalo looks an exciting option for Leeds to bring in, with it once claimed (via Bundesliga official) that he is similar in style to Bayern Munich legend Arjen Robben.

That says a huge amount about the winger’s quality and he could come in and put the pressure on Raphinha and Harrison, ensuring that there is healthy competition for regular playing time.

At 23, he is at a good age where he has plenty of experience – he has won 27 caps for Croatia – but can also improve further, especially under a manager of Marcelo Bielsa’s standing.

In other news, Leeds have been tipped to sign a player who impressed in the Premier League last season. Read more here.

Maturidade e responsabilidade: joias do São Paulo analisam mata-matas

Espero dar muitas alegrias a todos do clube. Sobre o TCC, faz parte da faculdade. Preciso fazer para concluir tudo. Vou dar um jeito.

Abraham could be City’s Kane alternative

Manchester City have been tipped to make a move for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham rather than Harry Kane this summer as they struggle to reach an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur.

What’s the word?

City have regularly been linked with Kane throughout the transfer window after the England captain announced his intentions to leave the north London club following another trophyless season, which also saw them scrape a place in next season’s Europa Conference League.

However, it seems clear that the Citizens would have to pay well over £100m if they want to sign the 28-year-old, with recent reports suggesting that any deal between the two clubs could well go to the deadline, and the last thing Pep Guardiola needs is to end up without a new striker for the 2021/22 season.

The Spaniard bid goodbye to club legend Sergio Aguero earlier in the summer, and whilst City played much of season without a natural striker on the pitch, it would be unwise to have just Gabriel Jesus and 18-year-old Liam Delap as their centre-forward options for next season.

They could perhaps look towards Abraham as a cheaper, younger alternative to Kane this summer, and when former Manchester City man Trevor Sinclar was asked on talkSPORT if he would take the Chelsea man over the England captain, he said:

“I would, yeah. He’s a young enough player and with Pep Guardiola’s coaching ability and the teammates around him… he’s a top player. The season he had at Aston Villa and then he went back to Chelsea and did very well.

“He’s a handful, his pace, he looks to stretch the lines, he’s a finisher. No player’s perfect, especially at 22 or 23, but there’s a lot of growth there with Tammy. He’d be someone I’d be very interested to see at Manchester City.”

Would Abraham be a good signing?

Whilst Abraham is a long way from reaching Kane’s level, he managed 12 goals last season despite limited game-time and has netted 30 times for his current club.

Also, he appears to be surplus to requirements in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, so he could prove to be relatively cheap compared to the Spurs man this summer. By contrast, Kane won the Premier League Golden Boot last term and has been his club’s leading scorer for seven seasons in a row, which would suggest that Tottenham would be extremely reluctant to sanction his exit.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Although Chelsea might not want to sell to a title rival such as City, Abraham is only 23; and as Sinclair suggests, he could become a top player under Guardiola’s coaching.

At 1.9m (6 foot 3), the Blues striker would offer City a different option up front and would perhaps encourage them to put more crosses into the box, something with which they struggled at times over the last couple of seasons.

Therefore, if a deal for Kane proves to be too expensive, Txiki Begiristain should definitely consider a move for the “unbelievable” Abraham – in the words of fellow City transfer target Jack Grealish – this summer.

Thirty five years of searching for gold – Peter Robinson remembers the Lord's finals

Somerset’s quest for gold in one day competitions goes back thirty five years to 1967, and there is one person who has been involved at the club for all that length of time

Richard Walsh29-Aug-2002Somerset’s quest for gold in one day competitions goes back thirty five years to 1967, and there is one person who has been involved at the club for all that length of time. That person of course is Peter Robinson who came to join the Cidermen from his native Worcestershire back in 1965, and since then has become an adopted son of the county.Nowadays he is the clubs Ground Safety Officer, he manages the Somerset Board XI and takes charge of the Under19’s side, to name but a few of his duties. As we sat in his little office at the County Ground recently `Robbo’ cast his mind back over the years to each of the Lord’s finals that he has played a part in.The Cidermen’s first visit to headquarters was in 1967, when they played Kent in the Gillette Cup. Robbo told me: " We played Lancashire in the semi-final in a match that went into the second day. I didn’t play at Old Trafford, and only made the final team because regular opener Tony Clarkson had broken his leg, and I had scored 97 opening against Middlesex."`Robbo’ continued: "The 1967 Lord’s final was the first time that Lord’s had been taken by storm, with the cider and the hops, it was an amazing day."Kent batted first and had reached 138 for 1 before they collapsed to 193 all out. He continued: "It sticks in my mind Colin Cowdrey walking out to bat. He had just been reinstated as England captain and received a standing ovation all the way to the wicket. He got one from Kenny Palmer and clipped it low to me at midwicket where I took the catch that sent him on the long walk back to the pavilion. The crowd were silenced!"Sadly the Kent score was too much for the Cidermen who despite a solid 48 from `Robbo’ were dismissed for 161.Somerset’s next visit to Lord’s was in the Gillette final eleven years later in 1978 by which time Robbo’s playing career had come to a close and he had become county coach. The Cidermen batted first and scored 207 for 7 off their 60 overs. The former coach recalled: "This was the first final that slow bowlers had really come to the fore. Giles Cheatle and John Barclay both bowled well and we lost Viv Richards when he was going well, he was caught sweeping Barclay. That was the first time I had ever seen him tied down by a bowler."He continued: "When they batted Joel was his usual miserly self, but we didn’t score enough runs and Sussex got them with overs to spare."Somerset were back at Lord’s the following season to face Northamptonshire and this time they made no mistake.Robbo told me: "This was Viv and Joel’s match really. Up until that point one of the lesser known players had got us through, but Viv was one for the big occasion, he was really switched on. His 117 gave us a formidable score, and with 269 on the board we felt secure. Then Joel destroyed them just like he always did. He got out the early players and then stopped the tail wagging to end with 6 for 29."He continued: " This was the clubs first trophy for 104 years, a landmark because up until then we had always been the poor relation of first class cricket."The next day the Cidermen travelled up to Trent Bridge where they beat Nottinghamshire to win the John Player League, so the players and the fans really did have something to celebrate after all their years of waiting! The next trip to Lord’s was in 1981 for the Benson and Hedges Cup Final where they played Surrey.Robbo told me: "Once again Viv and Joel dominated the match. They batted first and Joel destroyed them He started with the top order and then finished off the rest when he came back on at the end. Roger Knight played well for his 92, the only one to put us under any pressure, but then Joel returned and got him out to end with the figures of 11 overs 5 maidens 5 wickets for 14 runs."He continued: "When we batted Viv was his awesome self making an unbeaten 132 from 197 to win the Man of the Match award."Somerset were back at Lord’s to defend the Benson and Hedges Cup ther following year and they did it in style. "We slaughtered Nottinghamshire in 1982, it was a bit of a non event really," said Robbo. The former coach continued: "Joel destroyed them taking 3 for 13 from 8 overs, but Vic Marks had the impressive figures of 2 for 24 from 11 overs. He was always around doing his stuff and chipped in with two or three wickets for not too many. He was a very effective foil to Joel, who was firing them down from a great height. He thoroughly deserved the Man of the Match Award for taking the vital wickets of Clive Rice and Derek Randall."The last time that Somerset went to Lord’s during the Glory Years was in 1983 when they took on Kent again in what had by now become the Nat West Trophy.Robbo recalled: "Actually the match in the semi final against Middlesex was a real nail biter, just like the one against Kent this season. Both sides scored 222 , but we got through because we had lost fewer wickets.""I shall always remember that final as Trevor Gards match. Viv got 51,but with a total of 193 you couldn’t feel confident. But Joel could always put people under pressure and he got Mark Benson out early."He continued: "But the real heroes were Trevor Gard and Vic Marks. It was looking easy for them when Chris Tavare and Graham Johnson were in full flow, but then Vic disposed of Tav, caught by Peter Roebuck in the deep, and this led to a collapse, which included Trevor Gard’s two brilliant leg side stumpings to dismiss Derek Aslett off Viv and Chris Cowdrey off Vic this turned the match, and we won."The Cidermen had to wait sixteen years until 1999 before they went to Lord’s again, but on this occasion they were beaten by the old enemy Gloucestershire in the Nat West Final.By this time Robbo was no longer directly involved on the playing front, but the Somerset side on that occasion included a number of youngsters who had been coached by him, including Marcus Trescothick. He told me: "This was the first time that most of them had been to play in a big final at Lord’s and I suspect that they found the pressure difficult to cope with."Two year later the Somerset faithful were back at Lord’s again, but on this occasion they went home with something to celebrate, their first trophy after an eighteen year wait.Robbo said: "They knew what to expect this time and made no mistakes about it when they beat Leicestershire."What about 2002 and the game against Yorkshire I asked him. He told me: "Having been there before the more confident you become, you cope better with the pressure. If we get Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick back it will be a very good game. I’m confident that we will retain the title, and I would put money on us at the bookies!"Finally I asked him if he was going to be at Lord’s on August 31st. Before he answered he wistfully ran his hand over his 1967 runner’s up medal and then looked up and told me:
"No I wont be going this time round. I will be staying at home, but I will watch every ball on the television so I might just as well be there!"
