Malik opens door to selection tussles

Shoaib Malik re-ignited a simmering selectorial tussle when he appeared to blame the selection committee in the aftermath of Pakistan’s emphatic six-wicket loss to India in the Asia Cup. Though he subsequently tried to play down his own comments, little doubt was left that the relationship between Pakistan’s captain and selectors is far from a healthy one.During an often tense press conference in Karachi, Malik, responding to a journalist’s question on the composition of the team, snapped back, “When captains are given the 11 players, then you ask this question of the selectors.” Reporters immediately latched on to the implication, repeatedly probing Malik about whether there was friction within the management.Malik backtracked in spirit if not in word, testily explaining then that his thoughts and suggestions were also taken into account. “In Pakistan, selectors give the final XI,” Malik said. “The captain and coach give their inputs but the selectors put down the XI. We all work together on this. Is that clear enough?”Though the dispute has history, it is believed that the latest tiff arose from Malik’s reluctance to open the innings against India, preferring to recall Nasir Jamshed. That would mean dropping Fawad Alam, who had scored a maiden fifty in the previous game against Hong Kong, an idea the selectors did not ultimately agree to. There is also reportedly disagreement over whether or not Pakistan should play a specialist offspinner, Malik, in favour of giving Saeed Ajmal a debut.The selection committee also played down speculation about a rift. “There can be differences of opinion between selectors and the coach and captain,” Salahuddin Ahmed, the Pakistan board’s chief selector, told Cricinfo. “But that doesn’t mean there is a rift. We always select the best XI for any game. The squad of 15 we chose for the Asia Cup was, however, approved by everyone, including the captain.”Though in isolation the development is more molehill than mountain, it is actually part of a history of unease between selectors, captain and coach in this tenure. Over time, the selection committee is thought to have become increasingly unimpressed with Malik’s reluctance to bowl and his push for players such as the non-performing Kamran Akmal. During the series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh also, there were a number of heated disagreements between Geoff Lawson and the selection committee; their relationship is also a tense one.At least in part, the friction stems from a recent board policy which gives the selection of the final XI, for home series, fully to the selectors. This policy, in turn, was a result of the disenchantment with the autocratic powers Malik’s predecessor, Inzamam-ul-Haq, enjoyed during his tenure, when the final XI was unequivocally the captain’s choice.

Journalist expecting Wolves exit for Patrick Cutrone

Patrick Cutrone is one Wolves player Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield expects to leave the club before the transfer window slams shut.

The Italian striker joined from AC Milan back in the summer of 2019 when Nuno Santo was manager, but has failed to make much of an impact at Molineux.

Less than a year later, Cutrone was swiftly shipped out on loan to Fiorentina before following that up with another temporary spell away, this time at Valencia.

In total, the 23-year-old has made just 14 league appearances for Wolves, scoring two goals.

Speaking to FFC about Cutrone’s future at Molineux, Hatfield said:

“It would surprise me [if he had a future in black and gold]. He’s just not had a good time at Molineux at all, Patrick Cutrone.

“I think fans really tried to give him that welcome, you know, as a striker you want him to perform. But coming from abroad is always hard.

“Ultimately, it’s one that hasn’t worked out for Wolves or the player. I think they’d be keen to let him go for the right price.”

An exit for Cutrone does look inevitable. Raul Jimenez is back from injury, while you would also expect Fabio Silva to be given plenty of opportunities up front this season given how much Wolves have invested into the young Portuguese striker.

Furthermore, considering how things have worked out at Molineux so far and where he is likely to be in the pecking order, perhaps a permanent move elsewhere is best for Cutrone.

Liverpool: Fans react to Neco Williams update

Liverpool youngster Neco Williams is reportedly set to stay at Anfield for the 2021/22 season, despite previous claims that he could depart on loan this summer.

Williams has made 25 appearances for Liverpool’s first-team, which includes 14 from the 2020/21 season, in which the senior squad struggled with a number of injury problems.

Reports since emerged that Williams could leave the club in search of regular game time, but The Athletic now claim that the Welshman is set to remain at Anfield for the upcoming league campaign, which gets underway this weekend.

Speaking in an interview with Love Sport Radio (via TBR Football), former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland labelled Williams as ‘superb’ for his performances when called up, and it now looks as though he will have a chance to stay and prove the former Red right.

Plenty of Liverpool supporters took to social media to react to this reported update on Williams’ future with the club, with a number of fans being left frustrated.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from the Anfield Watch Twitter account, who shared the update, leading one fan to label the youngster as ‘overrated’:

Greg Shipperd, the Victoria coach, could be one of the contenders to replace John Bracewell, whose term as New Zealand coach ends in April 2009. Shipperd apparently has the backing of the New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, who was impressed by the Australian during their stint with the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.”I’ll certainly think about it, yes,” Shipperd told the Wellington-based . “Any national coaching job is very prestigious and a great challenge and you’ve got a terrific emerging team I think, so from a coaching point of view it would be a great challenge and another level above where I currently coach.”Shipperd coached Tasmania for 11 seasons after quitting first-class cricket in 1990-91, guiding the state to its first Sheffield Shield final in 1993-94, then again in 1997-98 and 2001-02. He took charge of Victoria after David Hookes’ death in January 2004 and in the same season, the team celebrated its first Pura Cup title since 1990-91. In the IPL, Delhi made good progress at the start of the tournament, but narrowly made it to the semi-finals, where they lost to champions Rajasthan Royals.Shipperd has until August 4 to make a formal application. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) haven’t disclosed the names of any applicants yet. However, Justin Vaughan, NZC’s chief executive, had stated John Wright, the former New Zealand captain and India coach, is one of the favourites for the job.Of the state associations in the country, the paper reported that Andy Moles (Northern Districts) and Anthony Stuart (Wellington) have attracted a lot of positive feedback. Tom Moody, the former Australian allrounder and coach of Sri Lanka, has indicated his preference to stay on Perth with Western Australia, and hence will not apply.

– Para determinar se o bola ultrapassou a linha do gol;
– Marcação de pênalti;
– Expulsão (Cartão vermelho);

– Cartão amarelo;
– Marcação de escanteios;
– Inversão de faltas;
– Faltas fora da área;
– Inversão de arremesso lateral;

O time prepara e eu finalizo. “O Roger é lento, o Roger não acompanha…”. Nosso time é de guerreiro, joga contra-golpeando. Essa é a nossa característica da equipe. Eu preciso daquela bola ali no espaço.

Debutants star in Canada victory

Canada’s three debutants were the stars as their team opened the tri-series with a 25-run victory over Bermuda, who also relied heavily on a first-gamer. Sent in at No. 3 in the chase, Chris Douglas, 18, guided Bermuda with a promising 69 but when he fell with 71 still needed, the hosts locked down the Bermuda lower order.After being sent in at King City, Canada got away to a flyer with one of their new players, Rizwan Cheema, slamming three sixes in his 24-ball 34. It was a dangerous start for Bermuda, who were going at ten an over until Stefan Kelly broke the opening stand with the score on 53.Tight bowling from Dwayne Leverock helped slow the run-rate – he finished with 1 for 20 from his ten overs – but Bermuda struggled to get a run of wickets and Manoj David’s 48 from 82 deliveries proved a frustration. When Canada lost David, playing his first one-day international at the age of 33, in the 42nd over there was a risk the tail could undo much of Canada’s hard work.But the third of their debutants, Karun Jethi, piled on three sixes in his unbeaten 46 from 36 balls. He combined with Harvir Baidwan (21 not out) for an important 73-run stand that ensured a strong total of 260 for 7.Bermuda began solidly, if not as frantically as Canada, and a 90-run partnership from Douglas and Jekon Edness made the target seem perfectly gettable. However, Cheema proved not just a promising opener but also a handy bowler when he had Edness caught for 45.At 123 for 2 it meant Bermuda needed Douglas to anchor the innings, but a pair of wickets each to David and Jethi left too much work for Bermuda’s lower order. When Douglas departed, bowled by Jethi in the 41st over, the game slipped out of reach for Bermuda, who must now beat West Indies on Wednesday to have any chance of reaching the final.
