Ball left stunned by Rangers’ CL exit - exclusive

Former Rangers star Michael Ball was left shocked by the defeat to Malmo in the Champions League, insisting that the club should be embarrassed by the performance.

The Scottish club have not even made the group stages, losing to the Swedish side in the third qualifying round.

It means they will drop into the Europa League qualifiers, so they may still have the opportunity to play European football this season.

The defeat will come as a particular blow because Malmo scored both of their goals in the 2-1 second leg win when they were down to 10 men.

The first leg also ended with a 2-1 win for Malmo, and Ball was left disappointed by the club’s performance.

It comes as a particular shock after Rangers’ performance in the Scottish Premiership last season, where they went unbeaten.

This season, already, Rangers have also been beaten by Dundee United in the league.

Ball said in an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern: “Very disappointing, very shocked really. Steven’s record at the club has been fantastic since he’s been there.

“They let themselves down in the first leg but then Steven asked the fans to turn up in their numbers and get behind the boys and the fans did that, they got themselves 1-0 up but unfortunately it was pretty embarrassing, really, how they capitulated, especially against 10 men.”

West Ham eyeing up Bamba

An update has emerged on Lille forward Jonathan Bamba, regarding West Ham’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, via Get Football News France, West Ham, Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta are all interested in signing Lille forward Jonathan Bamba.

The report claims all three sides are keeping tabs on the Frenchman ahead of a potential transfer, with the window set to close in less than two weeks.

Fans would love him

GSB must look to seal a deal for Bamba before the end of the month as he could be an exciting addition to the squad. There is no harm in trying, so West Ham must swoop in and make an offer for the winger to test Lille’s resolve in the coming days to see if it is possible to bring him to England.

Bamba enjoyed a terrific season last term as he was directly involved in 16 goals for the French club. He produced seven goals and nine assists across Ligue 1 and the Europa League, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.07 in the former.

Said Benrahma’s tally of six was the most assists that any West Ham midfielder or attacker managed in the Premier League last season. This suggests that Bamba’s creativity could provide a boost to David Moyes’ squad, as he has proven he has the quality to regularly create chances in Ligue 1.

Lille boss Christophe Galtier hailed Bamba as important during the 2020/21 campaign. He said: “Jonathan’s been in fantastic form at the start of this season. Full credit to him. Jo’s on the pitch more often than not, and if that’s the case, it’s because he’s an important player for the team.”

Bamba also averaged 1.7 key passes per game for Lille last term, more than any West Ham player was able to manage. This further goes to show the level of ability he could bring to the London Stadium and why Hammers fans would love him.

The wing wizard can get supporters off their seats with his energetic displays whilst also having the end product to match his skill, which means he could create chances for the likes of Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen.

Of course, it is impossible to predict whether or not Bamba would be able to translate his form over from France to England, but his statistics for Lille suggest that he would have a very, very good chance of being able to make an impact.

West Ham must look to get this deal done.

Johnson's speed frightened us – Siddons

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, believes several of his batsmen were scared of Mitchell Johnson’s speed and he blamed their “silly shots” for the team’s dismal effort against Australia in Darwin

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, believes several of his batsmen were scared of Mitchell Johnson’s speed and he blamed their “silly shots” for the team’s dismal effort against Australia in Darwin. Chasing 255 for victory Bangladesh capitulated for 74, which was their lowest total in an ODI, and a clearly frustrated Siddons was searching for answers after the match. He was particularly critical of some of the batsmen falling to premeditated shots and he singled out the captain Mohammad Ashraful, whose ugly attempted pull to a Johnson ball that stayed low trapped him dead in front. “I can’t control their mental frame of mind when they get out there,” Siddons said. “The shot selection – premeditated shots like Ash’s, it’s a little disappointing.”The unfamiliarity of the debutant Brett Geeves, who bowled quick and picked up 2 for 11, contributed to the middle-order struggles but the main damage came at the top. It was the first time several of the players had faced Johnson, and Siddons said they played him on his reputation rather than his efforts on the day.”A couple of the guys had it in their mind about Mitchell Johnson and so on, and I don’t think Mitchell bowled that fast today,” Siddons said. “The wicket slowed him up a fair bit. So the batsmen can probably have a look at that now and say, well, it’s not the type of wicket that he’s going to bowl 100 miles an hour.”We can take away the unknown now. They’ve seen Geeves, they’ve seen Mitchell Johnson. They don’t need to be frightened of their pace any more. Most of the guys got out there and faced either of those two. They can take that away and come back the next game and play some better shots and be a bit more patient.”Johnson also picked up Tamim Iqbal, who had belted the slower Nathan Bracken for a couple of boundaries but fell when he tried to slash Johnson over third man. Tamim misjudged the shot and it fell into the hands of Geeves, leaving Bangladesh’s middle order exposed too early in the match.”It’s something that you see a lot with our guys,” Siddons said. “They don’t look uncomfortable at that level, but they get out with some silly shots. I can yell and scream at them or I can take them to the nets and keep working at it. I think I’ll take them to the nets.”Siddons was concerned that “the occasion was too big” for his players and he is keen to make top-order changes for the second match on Wednesday. He was obviously unsure whether Mehrab Hossain jnr, who made an eight-ball duck, was the right man to open, but whoever goes out first should take note of the patience displayed by Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh, who ground out an 85-run partnership. It was not pretty but it was highly effective and it gave Hussey a solid enough platform to cut loose towards the end, driving Australia to the 254 that set up their 180-run triumph. He finished with 85 and was the main reason Australia picked up 49 from the final five overs, an effort that drew praise from the stand-in captain Michael Clarke.”Talk about it every game with Huss, don’t we?” Clarke said. “He’s a freak … he stood up, he made sure he was going to be there at the end. He helped the boys around him, he played that support role through the middle and then enjoyed the last few overs.”Clarke was also thrilled there were a couple of wickets for Geeves, who was a late inclusion in the squad after Brett Lee became unavailable. It gives Australia a tough choice on who to leave out on Wednesday, if Shane Watson is ruled fit after missing the opening game with soreness in his lower leg.”Geevesy really looked forward to today, once he found out he’d been selected he was very excited, he was dying for an opportunity,” Clarke said. “It shows the strength of Australian cricket. Guys just keep coming in and keep stepping up.”

Liverpool transfer update on Saul

Some Liverpool fans have been left fuming as a transfer update emerged involving Saul.

As per Goal, Chelsea have now been offered the chance to sign the Atletico Madrid ace on a loan deal for the rest of the 2021/22 season, and could negotiate an option to buy of a fee in the region of €45m (£38.5m).

There have been a number of reports linking the Reds with a move for Saul throughout the summer window so far, but it looks as if Thomas Tuchel’s team could beat them to his signature if they are not careful.

The Spain international has impressed so far in La Liga this term, recording one assist in his two games, as well as winning 7.5 of his duels per match and averaging 3.5 tackles, 1,5 shots and one clearance per appearance (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, at 26 years of age, he has not reached his peak yet, and Jurgen Klopp could do with another option in the middle of the park after the departure of Gini Wijnaldum.

McGain ruled out of first Test

Australia’s preferred spinner on the India tour, Bryce McGain, has been ruled out of the first Test after failing to recover from a shoulder injury he sustained last month

Bryce McGain, Australia’s preferred spinner on the India tour, has been ruled out of the first Test after failing to recover from a shoulder injury he sustained last month. McGain’s ongoing problem means Jason Krejza, the offspinner, is almost certain to make his Test debut when the series begins in Bangalore on October 9.McGain strained his right shoulder while on tour with Australia A in September and, while he was confident the injury was not serious, he has struggled to bowl in the past week. McGain will not play in the Australians’ final tour match against a Board President’s XI starting in Hyderabad on Thursday and is also in doubt for the second Test.McGain, 36, failed to bowl at the squad’s first net session in India last week and missed the tour opener against the RCA Centre of Excellence. He tested the shoulder at training in Hyderabad on Tuesday but pulled up sore.”Bryce re-aggravated it, at no stage did he bowl at 100%, we were just building up to that every day, just chipping away at it and it was the highest intensity he bowled yesterday and his arm didn’t cope with it, so it’s a setback for him,” Australia’s physio Alex Kountouris told . “What we do know is that he’s not going to be right for the four-dayer and it’s going to be a few weeks at least, so that puts him out of this game and the first Test at least.”The lat dorsi is your back muscle and it attaches to the back of the arm and he strained that. It’s an unusual injury, not something that happens commonly, it attaches just a bit below the shoulder and it’s an important muscle when he’s following through and bowling.”Tim Nielsen, Australia’s coach, said it was yet to be decided whether to call for a replacement for McGain. “With the selectors coming in on the second day of this game, we will then be in the best situation to take a decision as to whether to ask for a replacement,” Nielsen said. “This is a great opportunity for Jason Krejza.”He has been excellent. He is a good part of the group and has worked hard to learn about the Indian conditions. He will be obviously the front runner for the Test series. It’s a brilliant position for him to be. He can be nice and relaxed for tomorrow’s game and use it as a good preparation for the first Test.”
