Though Cook and Bopara were never realistically in with a chance of playing, Sidebottom’s left-arm variation could conceivably have muscled into the starting eleven. However, a slight calf injury undermined his readiness, and his match-fitness was described as “there or thereabouts”.One man who might feel slightly fortunate to have made the cut is the Sussex allrounder, Luke Wright, who has been a peripheral figure throughout the tournament. Former Newcastle centre-back Steve Howey has told Steve Bruce to consider signing Phil Jones, amid a deadline day fiasco with Craig Hope claiming the Toon manager is trying to arrange deals himself with the official club line that their business is done.

The Manchester United defender hasn’t made a competitive appearance for the Red Devils since an FA Cup tie at Tranmere in January 2020 – and spent the whole of last season out with a knee problem.

Jones did make his United return in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley earlier this month but appears some way down the pecking order despite Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer confirming the England defender remains in his plans.

According to the Daily Mail, Mapgies boss Bruce has been keeping a close eye on the 29-year-old as he looks to bolster his defensive numbers following their wretched start to the Premier League season.

Newcastle have already conceded eight goals in three matches and have already tried five different central defenders in those three outings.

Bruce’s only significant addition to his squad this summer was the permanent capture of Joe Willock from Arsenal having missed out on Kristoffer Ajer, who eventually joined Brentford.

But with time running out, Howey exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Bruce should keep his options open and explore the possibility of bringing in Jones:

“He’s been at Manchester United for a long time, he’s played for his country. But he’s been frozen out completely and is struggling for first-team places.

“These are the players you might want to look at and weigh up the options about acquiring their services.”

النصر من جانبه أنهى الموسم الماضي في المركز الثالث وضمن المشاركة في النسخة المقبلة من السوبر السعودي ليقرر رئيس النادي مسلى آل معمر التخلص من المدرب الأرجنتيني ميجيل روسو.

الشباب من جانبه عقب الفشل في تحقيق المركز الثالث في الموسم الماضي من الدوري السعودي والاكتفاء بالمركز الرابع قرر رحيل الروماني ماريوس سوموديكا الذي انتقل لتدريب الرائد بينما يقترب الشباب من التعاقد مع مدرب برشلونة السابق كيكي سيتين.

وبالتحول للاتحاد عقب فشل الفريق في الفوز بلقب الدوري ينوي النادي التخلص من المدرب الروماني كوزمين كونترا كما توصل النادي لاتفاق مع المدير الفني البرتغالي نونو إسبريتو سانتو وهو المدرب الذي ارتبط بتدريب العميد حتى قبل وصول كوزمين كونترا لتدريب الفريق الجداوي.

البرتغالي نونو سانتو مواليد يناير 1974 تولى التدريب في 407 مباراة وفاز في 196 وخسر 116 وتعادل في 95.

وبات من المتوقع للمشجع العربي أن يتابع موسما ناريا على مستوى التكتيك مع تواجد مدربين بقيمة نونو سانتو ورودي جارسيا ورامون دياز وكيكي سيتين وباتريس كارتيرون وماريوس ساموديكا والعديد من المدربين المتميزن في الموسم المقبل.

ورحل كارتيرون عن منصب المدير الفني للزمالك بسبب سوء النتائج ليتوجه إلى السعودية ويتولى تدريب الاتفاق هناك.

وعلى صعيد متصل من المقرر أن تنطلق تدريبات الاتفاق يوم الجمعة 15 يوليو القادم في الدمام المرحلة الأولى من التحضيرات للموسم الجديد 2022/23 حيث سيخضع اللاعبون إلى فحوصات طبية قبل المغادرة إلى المعسكر الخارجي والذي سيعلن عنه لاحقا.

Cricket South Africa has extended Mickey Arthur’s contract as coach until the 2011 World Cup, and appointed Mike Procter as convener of selectors. The new selection panel also features former South African vice-captain Craig Matthews, Winky Ximiya and Mustapha Khan, who has been a selector for a number of years.”I am delighted to be back in the South African cricket fold. It’s a great privilege and honour to be convenor of selectors,” said Procter, the former international and current member of the ICC’s elite panel of match referees. “I realise that it is one of the most important jobs in South African cricket and look forward to meeting some of the players who I haven’t met, and it is obviously exciting taking over with a side that has been so successful in Test cricket.” Procter, 62, played seven Tests for South Africa.Gerald Majola, CSA’s chief executive, said Arthur’s contract extension was based partly on an “in-depth report” on the past few seasons. “The contract of Mickey Arthur has come up for review [and] Mickey presented a strategic plan to overcome the challenges of the next few seasons leading up to and including the ICC World Cup on the subcontinent in 2011.”Mickey presented to a panel comprising Dr. Logan Naidoo, Andrew Hudson, SA Cricketers’ Association representative Gerald Dros and myself,” he said. “The panel was impressed with his results as coach of South Africa, who recently completed their most successful season since unity as well as his plans for the future. Let us bend our energies in looking after and further developing this precious treasure we have, and that is the wonderful game of cricket.”The challenge is therefore not mine, or at least not mine alone to establish unity in this organization. It is also a challenge for each and everyone here. It is a challenge for the provincial administrator or selector who refuses to acknowledge the winds of change in our sport. It is a challenge for the official who is embittered over the injustice of the past that he refuses to accept that what binds us is far greater than what divides us.”

It will be ‘very difficult’ for Everton to send James Rodriguez the other way as they try to sign Luis Diaz from FC Porto, according to Carlos Aleman.

The lowdown

A right-back and a winger are on Everton’s shopping list ahead of Tuesday night’s transfer deadline, but the Blues are said to be reliant on James leaving in order to free up the funds (via The Athletic).

With Porto right-winger Diaz a target, one possible solution could be a part-exchange deal with the two-time European champions involving James.

The Colombian, of course, only moved to Goodison Park from Real Madrid last summer.

In a tweet, Aleman wrote that the proposed move is ‘very complicated’ but urged ‘patience’.

Everton are ‘trying to make something concrete’ with Diaz, but the stumbling block ‘has always been’ James’ salary.

The verdict

This kind of scenario was always a risk when Everton signed James, particularly in the midst of a pandemic.

According to Marca, his salary is around £7million per year, which equates to a shade under £135,000 per week.

If, for whatever reason, Everton needed to offload him, those wages were always likely to throw a spanner in the works.

In fairness, James performed well last season and there has been an unforeseen change of management, so they shouldn’t be criticised too harshly, but it feels best for all parties if they can figure out an exit now.

In other news, this Everton target is set for crunch talks with his manager.

Liverpool will likely find Michael Edwards’ replacement from within the club, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The Lowdown: Edwards set to leave Liverpool

While Jurgen Klopp has undoubtedly been the key reason for the Reds’ great success in recent years, Edwards has been hugely influential in his own right.

Liverpool’s sporting director has masterminded numerous top signings at the club, not to mention selling on surplus players for big fees.

It has been reported that Edwards is likely to leave his role at the end of the season, though, leaving a gaping void behind the scenes at the club.

“He’s done a brilliant job. He understands the business side of things and he understands the importance of identifying and keeping talent at the club.

“Somebody of his skill base is a rare gem to find. Liverpool have benefited significantly from his stewardship at the club.

“They are huge shoes to fill, but they’ve got phenomenal people there. If you are a good operator, you tend to surround yourself with good people.”

“You’d imagine they’d recruit from within because they have some very talented people at the club.”

The Verdict: Liverpool must nail Edwards’ replacement

Given the brilliant job Edwards has done at Anfield, it is vital that the Reds take their time in picking his replacement in order to make the transition as seamless as possible.

The hope is that he will decide to stay put despite recent speculation, but failure to find a sufficient replacement if he does move on could end up being a fateful decision.

It may be that Edwards’ influence is only fully appreciated when he is gone, depending on how Liverpool deal with the situation.
