Phil Hay delivers Leeds United verdict on Rodrigo

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered his verdict on Leeds United star Rodrigo after yet another disappointing display in the Premier League.

What’s the story?

The Spaniard has been nothing short of a disaster in these first few weeks of the new campaign, failing to score or assist in his seven top-flight appearances thus far, even being hooked at half-time in a couple of those.

And, after watching him deliver another goal-less performance against Southampton at the weekend, Hay raised concerns about whether the former Valencia man is the right fit for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

He said: “I don’t doubt he’s a good player, genuinely. But it’s hard to be convinced that he’s the right player for this team or this system. Put it this way. If Bamford is fit next weekend then your inclination would be to start him.”

Radrizzani won’t be happy

After splashing the cash to sign him for a club-record fee from Valencia back in the summer of 2020, it’s fair to say that Rodrigo hasn’t exactly delivered on his price tag just yet.

The Spanish forward endured a difficult debut campaign at Elland Road last season, completing the full 90 minutes just four times in the Premier League, while also missing a number of games either through injury or a viral infection.

Given the fee for which he joined – £26m – it’s quite telling that CIES now only value him at £6m – an indication of the kind of poor form and injury troubles that he has suffered and the fact that he will turn 31 in a few months’ time too.

Hay’s claim that he’s been left unconvinced by Rodrigo and whether he’s the “right player for this team or this system” is a very worrying take, and is one that might leave Andrea Radrizzani livid.

The Leeds supremo would no doubt have expected that the money being invested into the club on new signings is well thought out, but if the verdict now is that Rodrigo may not fit the bill for Bielsa, then that’s a damning indictment of the kind of recruitment work at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Leeds have suffered another injury setback…

Pitcher quits cricket for cycling

Cricinfo staff25-Apr-2009Arthur Pitcher, the Bermuda batsman, has decided to quit cricket and concentrate on his cycling career after being frustrated by the lack of commitment shown by his colleagues in the team.”With cycling you’re racing for the finish line and everybody wants to get their first,” Pitcher told the . “There’s more commitment than I was finding in cricket. I still have a love for the game of cricket but the work ethic is not there. With cricket you need all 11, with cycling it is just you. You can only blame yourself for failure.”Pitcher, 27, played three ODIs for Bermuda – all against Netherlands in 2007 – in which he scored 20 runs with an average of 6.66. He did not feature in the World Cup that year. He also played a first-class game for Bermuda in the Intercontinental Cup.”As I was established in cricket, I stayed with it, but a few things took place last season and I just got fed up with it. When I first started out cycling last season I took a lot of licks. I was getting left behind on the Sunday club rides and I made a point to push and push and say to myself I’m not letting these guys get away from me any more. I had the fight to stay with the big guys and now I’m improving and winning a few races.”Bermuda’s failure to qualify for the Super Eights in the recent World Cup Qualifiers resulted in a loss of ODI status that they held for four years.

West Ham dealt big Coufal blow

West Ham have been dealt a huge injury blow ahead of their Europa League clash this evening…

What’s the latest?

The Hammers are expected to be without the services of right-back Vladimir Coufal for the next three matches due to an ongoing problem, according to club insiders Claret and Hugh.

He missed the weekend’s 1-0 win over Everton, having pulled out of his Czech Republic duties over the international break, and now it appears he will miss both the Genk game and the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

It is hoped that he could resume training next week but a clash with defending champions Manchester City may prove to be too soon for a return.

Speaking about the 29-year-old after the game on Sunday, the Irons boss said, via football.london.

“Vladimir has taken an injection he had a bit of discomfort in his pubis. He has had an injection in there, he got the injury in the Man United cup game and he has been carrying it for a few weeks.”

Huge blow

This will come as a massive setback to Moyes and West Ham.

Coufal missed their last Europa League game with what seemed like a knock but was able to return in the defeat to Brentford right before the break, though you could tell that he was far from 100% as he put in a disappointing display.

He was then not named in the squad to face the Toffees and according to the reliable insiders, he’s set to be out for the next three matches, which is certainly devastating as he is the clear first-choice option in the role.

The Irons have some important and tricky fixtures coming up, so to not have the £18m-rated right-back available is certainly gutting news.

His value to the side and their chances of success cannot be understated. He finished last season with the second-highest number of assists (seven), only behind fellow full-back Aaron Cresswell (eight).

That goes to show that Moyes’ wide department is a crucial creative cog in this system.

Furthermore, Coufal has been an absolute animal defensively, too – as per WhoScored, he averaged a squad-high 2.1 tackles per game and wasn’t far behind for interceptions (1.2 per game) either.

That form had continued into the current campaign, where he is averaging 2.1 tackles each outing once again.

Perhaps Jamie Carragher’s endorsement of him on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football last season truly hints at his influence, he said [4th May, 22:24pm]:

“We talk about [Tomas] Soucek, but Coufal whether it’s right wing-back or right full-back at different times, he’s just one of those players that’s 7/10 minimum every time you watch him play.

“He’s the type of player you’d love to play with him. A manager’s dream, never injured, he’s there week in week out.”

On the above evidence, this will be a frustrating development that is sure to leave Moyes hugely worried heading into some very important fixtures.

A win over Genk would keep up their 100% record in the Europa League, whilst matches against Spurs have always offered up goals and drama, and then there’s the small matter of Pep Guardiola’s City.

In an ideal world, Moyes would have loved to have Coufal available, so it’s a major blow to the Hammers.

AND in other news, Big call: Moyes must ruthlessly axe West Ham’s £10.8m-rated “complete beast” vs Genk…

Eoin Morgan’s Ireland days are over after his England call-up•International Cricket Council

The news that Eoin Morgan was today selected by England in their Twenty20 and one-day squads was met with pragmatic disappointment by Ireland, his birth-country. However inevitable it may have been, Cricket Ireland’s chief executive, Warren Deutrom, used Morgan’s case as a rallying cry to the ICC that more must be done to help Associate nations if they are to avoid losing their best players to England.Morgan was short-listed in England’s preliminary Twenty20 squad while he was representing Ireland in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, held two weeks ago in South Africa. At the time, Ireland were understandably disappointed, but nevertheless realised that Morgan – like Ed Joyce before him – had always made his intentions clear to play a higher level of cricket. For now, Ireland remain an Associate one-day nation, and that higher level of professional cricket is in England. But as Ireland showed in the tournament in South Africa, which they won, their standing as an Associate continues to improve; elevation to Full Member status, and Test cricket, is no longer a 20-year pipedream but a realistic ambition.”We are sad to lose Eoin to England, and we sincerely wish him all the very best in his future career,” Deutrom said. “However, it shows that Irish cricket can produce players who are capable of competing on the world stage in the game’s ultimate format. This only strengthens our argument to push ICC to let our best players realise their ambition of playing Test cricket with the green shamrock of the Ireland on their chest, rather than the three Lions of England.”Eoin’s departure, and Ed Joyce’s before him, underlines the fact that Associate countries like Ireland will always lose our very best players until such time as we are shown a pathway to Test cricket by ICC. At the very time that ICC is investing in us to be better, this anomaly highlights where the real change needs to come in the world game.”For Ireland to become one of ICC’s Full Members requires more than just money, however. Until recently, Ireland’s board was effectively run by a handful of full-time staff, relying instead on the loyalty and passion of voluntaries, which demonstrates just how far they have come in a short space of time. In addition, Ireland would have to prove to the ICC not only that its national squad can challenge the best nations, but also that they are adequately prepared to host a variety of international fixtures.Their development programme – which in Ireland is certainly more mature than, for example, Namibia or Netherlands – must also meet ICC’s requirements. For now, all Ireland can do is continue to improve and distance themselves from other Associates at the top of the table.”We’ve known for a long time that Eoin was destined to play for England, and the squad is happy for him that he’s got there and realised his ambition,” said Phil Simmons, Ireland’s coach. “We wish him all the best in the Twenty 20 tournament and also for his one-day international career. While it’s disappointing to lose a player of his undoubted calibre, we’ve contingency plans in place, as his selection hasn’t come a shock to us.”A shock it is not, but despite their pragmatism, Ireland remain frustrated at the ease with which the ECB can pluck their best players. Morgan is one of several Irishmen to have crossed over the water to play county cricket. Boyd Rankin represents Warwickshire while Niall O’Brien has played for Nothamptonshire, and the current Ireland captain, William Porterfield, plays for Gloucestershire. The situation was best summed up by Ireland’s manager, Roy Torrens, two weeks ago. “As a cricketing country, we don’t hold anything against the players,” he told Cricinfo. “If you have the ability and the chance is given to you, then go for it. We don’t like it, but we have to put up with it.”

Nuno shares ‘bad news’ for Spurs fans

Speaking to the club’s official website, Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo has just shared some ‘bad news’ for Lilywhites supporters.

The Lowdown: Spurs injury list so far…

After the torrid September international break, a period of his reign that he would soon like to forget, Nuno has seen a variety of players succumb to injury worries or spend extensive time on the treatment table.

The likes of Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min and Eric Dier have been sidelined already this season (Eurosport), as well as Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon who have both missed the last few games.

Sharing news on the latter man, Nuno has just dropped a not-so-positive update.

The Latest: Nuno shares ‘bad news’…

Speaking to the press (via tottenhamhotspur.com) ahead of their clash with Burnley tonight, the Portuguese has shared some ‘bad news’ for Lilywhites supporters concerning Sessegnon.

Whilst confirming that Doherty is back available, the same cannot be said for the Englishman.

“He’s [Doherty] back in the group, that’s good news. He’s going to be in the squad,” Nuno explained.

“It’s up to us to decide the right moment to integrate all the players.

“The only bad news that we have at this moment is Ryan Sessegnon – he’s not able to join us yet.”

The Verdict: Blow for Sessegnon…

Signed for £25 million by Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, the starlet seemingly had the world at his feet at one point with pundit Noel Whelan claiming he would go on to become a ‘massive asset’.

That hasn’t quite happened thus far due to a mix of injury problems and spending time out on loan in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, but the fact Nuno is allegedly a big fan of the player tells you that he is still firmly in the manager’s plans.
