Bangladesh’s chaotic batting incensed Jamie Siddons who was withering in his assessment of the effort, calling the performance a “ridiculous” effort

George Binoy at Trent Bridge08-Jun-2009

Niall O’Brien: “If you can’t enjoy 20 overs in the field and hitting sixes while batting, what are you going to enjoy?”•Getty Images

Ireland did not come to Trent Bridge hoping to cause an upset against Bangladesh. Despite being an Associate member, they believed they were the better side and fully expected to win. They duly executed their skills, ousted Bangladesh, a Full Member country, from the competition and secured a place in the Super Eights.Ireland had beaten Bangladesh during the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, and although Mohammad Ashraful said his players were not as anxious now as they were before that match, there was a remarkable difference in how both teams approached the game. While Bangladesh’s batsmen forgot their batting plan, falling to shots that angered their coach Jamie Siddons, Ireland showed calm even when their chase got off to a less than ideal start. It appeared as though Bangladesh were playing nervously, to avoid errors on the field, while Ireland were having fun but always kept their eye on the ball.Their success was heartening, for the struggles a cricket team like Ireland faces are different from those faced by the major nations. For instance, Ireland have only two centrally-contracted professional cricketers – Trent Johnston, who came out of retirement, and Alex Cusack – and only a handful of others that play county cricket.”We don’t have the funds to get the lads on full time contracts,” said captain William Porterfield. “It’s crucial for Ireland cricket to move forward that we get more lads on professional contracts, playing against better opposition, training day in and day out.” And now that they’ve qualified for the next round, several members of their squad might have to organise more leave from their regular jobs, something that Porterfield said the players hadn’t thought about yet.The O’Brien brothers – Kevin and Niall – played a significant part in Ireland’s success. While Kevin started the day poorly, dropping Mohammad Ashraful at first slip, Niall was excellent behind the stumps. His speed in getting to the ball forced indecision between the Bangladesh batsmen and led to the run out of the well-set Tamim Iqbal but it was his lightning stumping to dismiss Mahmudullah that left watchers gasping.Niall O’Brien was standing up to the medium-pacer Alex Cusack when Mahmudullah was beaten by a full ball. The batsmen’s back foot was always behind the line but he raised it for the briefest of moments. And during that smallest of openings, he whipped off the bails. He later revealed it was part luck but there was no denying the speed of his reflexes.”I was happy enough just to catch it and I thought I might as well take the bails off for good measure,” O’Brien said. “Nigel Llong and I, we just said ‘not out’. I was pretty surprised when it was given out. It just shows that you never quite know, do you.”He made an even more important contribution to Ireland’s victory with the bat. The innings had failed to pick up momentum after the early dismissal of Jeremy Bray and Ireland were 18 for 1 after four overs, chasing 138. O’Brien, who was struggling with an injury, attacked Mortaza, hitting the fast bowler for three leg-side sixes in an over. He scored 40 off 25 balls despite taking painkillers after hurting his ankle – Niall said he “heard a crack” – in the final over of Bangladesh’s innings. It put Ireland’s chase on track and they never lost course.”In Twenty20 cricket you’ve got to take a bit of a gamble every now and then,” he said. “Hitting towards that part of the ground, it was the shorter boundary for me. I hit him with the swing. It was a calculated risk, sometimes it got goes straight up in the air, fortunately for me today it went straight over the boundary.”O’Brien, however, only provided the acceleration. He didn’t finish the job, falling in the 10th over with the score on 61. That responsibility was left to his brother Kevin, whom Niall described as one of the best hitters in the game. Kevin O’Brien lived up to that billing, scoring a 17-ball 39 and finishing the game with ten balls to spare.”He [Kevin] came up to me yesterday and said, ‘I’m playing really badly’. I said there’s no point in worrying about how you are playing before the tournament started,” he said. “Once the game starts and you cross the pitch, that’s what counts. He’s done it for us again today. He’s as big a hitter as any.”Ireland’s next match, against the world champions India, counts for little since the two sides have already made it past the first round. Ireland, however, are determined to enjoy every match on the world’s biggest stage. “If you can’t get up and enjoy a game against the World Champions, there’s no point coming here. If you can’t enjoy 20 overs in the field and hitting sixes while batting, what are you going to enjoy? We’ll give it everything we’ve got on Wednesday.”Ireland may not be as skilled as the more reputed sides, as Bangladesh claim to be, but they’ve got belief. And sometimes that can make up for a lack of ability.

O novo reforço tricolor relembrou a partida e agradeceu à confiança do comandante do Flu.

Crosthwaite relocates to Sydney

The wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite is searching for a new state after deciding to leave Victoria due to a lack of opportunities

The wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite is heading to Sydney to try his luck with New South Wales after deciding to leave Victoria due to a lack of opportunities. Crosthwaite was offered a Victoria contract for 2009-10 but instead has entered the player transfer pool after struggling to oust Matthew Wade from the Sheffield Shield side last summer.Crosthwaite has been Victoria’s first-choice gloveman in the 50-over and Twenty20 formats, where his inventive batting has been an asset to the lower order. However, the Bushrangers preferred Wade as a four-day specialist and Crosthwaite’s only two Sheffield Shield appearances last season were as a batsman only.Wade’s strong 2008-09 season, which included 545 runs at 49.54 and a Victorian record 57 dismissals, made Crosthwaite’s decision easier. He had been the state’s No. 1 wicketkeeper following the retirement of Darren Berry and played 26 first-class games but found himself vying for the role when Wade switched from Tasmania two summers ago.Crosthwaite will captain the Sydney side Manly but is in the tough position of having to force his way past Daniel Smith as the first-choice wicketkeeper when Brad Haddin is away. Also in the queue of glovemen at New South Wales are Peter Nevill and Crosthwaite’s own brother James. By leaving Victoria, Crosthwaite has also given up the chance to play in the Champions League Twenty20 in India in October.”It’s pretty scary knocking back a contract here for no guarantees somewhere else, particularly when financially-wise the Champions [League] could be so fruitful,” Crosthwaite told the . “But at the end of the day you don’t play cricket for money, you play in the hope to represent Australia – and you have to be playing first-class cricket to do that.”

Everton have no fresh injury concerns

Everton have received a big boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Wolves this evening, with Rafa Benitez confirming he has no fresh injury concerns, while Richarlison is making good progress in his return to full fitness.

What’s the word?

The Toffees have been hampered by issues to several key players in recent weeks, with Abdoulaye Doucoure, Yerry Mina and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all sidelined through their respective problems.

However, Brazil international Richarlison made his first-team comeback last time out, coming on as a 60th-minute substitute against Watford, and he may be ready for a start at Molineux.

“He’s been getting better, we will see how much he can improve. In terms of his fitness, he will not be 100%, but he’s getting better,” Benitez revealed in Friday’s press conference when asked about the South American’s availability.

The 61-year-old then addressed the rest of his squad’s current injury status, and although he didn’t give too much away, there were no new concerns to report.

Benitez said: “Still we have two training sessions, some are nearly coming back. I think it’s too early to say who will be there, we’re making some medical assessments.”

And the Spaniard then provided another reason for the Everton fans to be cheerful, claiming key midfielder Doucoure could be back in action after the upcoming international break.

“Doucoure is getting better. He is progressing well. At least a couple of weeks. After the international break, he will be fine.”

Benitez will be delighted

Having no new injury concerns and Richarlison who is closer to full fitness will leave Benitez feeling delighted ahead of today’s trip to the Midlands.

Last season, the versatile attacker was Everton’s second-highest goalscorer in the top-flight, and only two players provided more assists, highlighting his importance to the Merseyside outfit, as per WhoScored.

He found the net on seven occasions in the top-flight, while beating the goalkeeper 13 times in all competitions.

Benitez addressed the 24-year-old’s influence ahead of the game against Wolves, lauding Richarlison’s threat in the final third of the pitch.

“If you think about the top scorers last year, he’s one of them. He has the ability to beat players and score goals. He was good for us at the beginning of the season, he can be a big miss,” he said.

After back-to-back defeats for the Blues, Benitez will be hoping that his change of luck regarding his recent injury crisis will translate onto the pitch. Richarlison will certainly help in that regard.

And, in other news…Benitez must axe £4.5m-rated Everton dud against Wolves, he’s become a “massive issue”

Spurs source makes Markanday claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’ and club source John Wenham has made a claim involving in-form youngster Dilan Markanday.

The Lowdown: Markanday shining…

Over 2021/22, it’s safe to say that the 20-year-old forward has been in sublime form for Tottenham’s Under-23s.

Indeed, Markanday has been a constant threat for Wayne Burnett’s side this season, notching an incredible 10 goals and two assists in 10 Premier League 2 outings (Transfermarkt).

This academy run prompted Spurs to give him his first senior nod recently, with the player debuting against Vitesse in the Europa Conference League in late October.

Markanday’s form has prompted talks of another new deal after he put pen to paper on a contract extension earlier this year, one which keeps him at Spurs until the end of this season.

Sharing what he knows, Wenham has now made a claim on the starlet’s situation as things stand.

The Latest: Exit talks ‘ongoing’…

As per the insider, speaking to Football Insider, Spurs want to extend Markanday’s deal before potentially sending him out on loan in January, with those talks apparently ‘ongoing’ behind the scenes.

“There will certainly be loan enquiries in January,” Wenham explained.

Actually, I’m told those talks are ongoing. Tottenham just want to extend that contract before he goes.

“I think if he doesn’t play between now and January, he will 100% leave in January.

“I’m certain League One clubs will already be asking about taking him on loan in January. That would be great for his development. I just want him to be playing.

“I would rather that was in the leagues instead of just in our Under 23 setup. He’s at that stage where he needs proper competitive football on a regular basis.”

The Verdict: Next stage…,

Like Wenham, we believe that a potential loan to England’s third tier could be just what Markanday needs in the next stage of his development as a Spurs player.

Having already dazzled at academy level, as evident by his rip-roaring form, the 20-year-old could now do with more senior experience whilst trying to replicate his fellow N17 graduates.

Troy Parrott has been shining on a temporary spell at MK Dons so far this season (90min), while defender J’Neil Bennett has been a regular at Crewe, starting nine League one matches while getting on the scoresheet and providing one assist (Transfermarkt).

If Markanday can go out on loan and replicate the young duo’s performances, Tottenham could be about to nurture yet another promising talent.

Time running out for Australia

England’s Beth Morgan did a Paul Collingwood, scratching and grinding out a vital half-century while Laura Marsh – admittedly a slightly better batsman than Monty Panesar – offered 38 as England’s women continued to defy Australia at Worcester

If the men’s final-day experience at Cardiff is a marker as to the importance of the Ashes for England and Australia, the women’s last day tomorrow ought to be a cracker. England’s Beth Morgan did a Paul Collingwood, scratching and grinding out a vital half-century while Laura Marsh – admittedly a slightly better batsman than Monty Panesar – offered 38 as England’s women continued to defy Australia at Worcester. With one day to go, Australia lead by 169, but tough decisions will need to be made if they are to set a daring declaration to give themselves any hope of bowling England out and regaining the Ashes.Morgan – a dasher in the ICC World Twenty20; a digger and blocker here in the Test – spent nearly six hours at the crease for her dogged 58, her maiden half-century in Tests. She lost Jenny Gunn after adding a further 20 to their overnight stand of 57, with the follow-on still looming a mere 24 runs away. But Morgan and Katherine Brunt, who made 27 from 84 balls, took England to relative safety and, crucially, took time away from Australia. Marsh occupied the crease for 72 minutes for her 38 – Holly Colvin 78 minutes for her 17 – as England slowly ground Australia down.Alex Blackwell made up for her duck in the first innings, stroking 59 and putting on an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 79 with the former captain, Karen Rolton, as Australia reached 128 for 1. How adventurous Jodie Fields, the newly instated captain, feels tomorrow will determine whether England retain, or Australia regain.
