Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has dropped the latest information regarding the future of Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier, with the Englishman reportedly keen on a move to Newcastle United.

What’s the story?

Speaking to BBC 5Live’s Euro Leagues show, Balague said: “Trippier has been approached. He likes the idea of going back. He doesn’t want to play in the Championship.

“But he would like to play for Newcastle next season, yes. I think he’s got a buy-out clause of about €31m or something like that.

“He has enjoyed Atletico Madrid but I feel he is ready to go back, go back to England.

“They [Newcastle] do want him January. He has said yes to them for January. It’s Atletico Madrid now who’s got to say, ‘We let him go now or at the end of the season.’”

Newcastle United are facing their first transfer window since the completion of their Saudi-backed takeover and have had countless amounts of players linked with moves to the North-East since the takeover was completed.

However, their Premier League status still remains well and truly in the balance, which could arguably prevent potential suitors from joining in January with their fate uncertain…Trippier included.

A swoop for the 31-year-old would be a major statement of intent from Eddie Howe and co. However, the uncertainty surrounding whether or not the Magpies will be relegated could prove a significant factor in the likelihood of a deal.

The Englishman has been a core member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad since the 51-year-old took charge of the national team as well as playing a major part in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga triumph last season.

Balague explained: “He was crucial last season, they changed their formation because of him and they took advantage of a lot of his fantastic crosses and his pushing on, going forward.”

However, this season the right-back hasn’t enjoyed similar fortunes with a shoulder injury holding him back lately.

Alas, Trippier’s quality and experience would prove to be a seismic improvement on the current options of Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth, neither of whom have particularly impressed this campaign.

Australia’s chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch has defended Michael Clarke’s position in the Twenty20 team and said he brings plenty to the side despite a disappointing record in internationals. Clarke will captain Australia at the ICC World Twenty20 in May and until then has five games to lift his output.He has played more Twenty20 internationals than any other Australian batsman, yet in 19 games he is yet to pass fifty and averages 19.63 at a strike-rate of 102. By comparison, David Warner averages 34 at a strike-rate of 139, Cameron White 41 at 150, and even Michael Hussey averages 25 at 134.Clarke is Australia’s full-time Twenty20 captain since Ricky Ponting retired from the format and he will be charged with taking the side further than the first-round exit inflicted on them at last year’s World Twenty20. His preparation for the tournament in the Caribbean begins with Friday’s game against Pakistan in Melbourne and Hilditch said he was confident Clarke was the right man for the job.”It’s going to be a very big tournament for Michael and he’s really looking forward to it,” Hilditch told AAP. “He’s one of the best players in world cricket at the moment in Tests and one-day internationals and we hope he can transfer that form into Twenty20.”He’s going to captain the side, he’s a brilliant fielder and he bowls left-arm orthodox as well, so it’s an exceedingly good all-round package he brings. With a loan deal for Philippe Coutinho now agreed, Aston Villa now have the opportunity to focus on signing other players who Steven Gerrard feels would improve his squad.

One player to whom the club could turn their attention and realistically get through the door before the end of the month is Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.

In a recent article from The Athletic by James Pearce, it was claimed that the 24-year-old “is attracting plenty of interest from both Premier League and Serie A clubs”.

The report also claimed that the Merseysiders have already rejected a bid of £7m from an unnamed top-flight club for him, with Liverpool having set their asking price set at £15m.

Additionally, the report named Villa as one of the Premier League sides who are in the market for a centre-back this month, so there’s every possibility that the Midlands club could launch a move for Phillips in the coming weeks if they feel he could improve their squad.

Taking into account how Villa have said goodbye to Axel Tuanzebe after his loan spell at Villa Park was cut short this week, there certainly is room for a new centre-back such as Phillips, who is currently valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, to come in and try and secure a place in Gerrard’s team.

Also, with a recent poll ran by Football FanCast revealing that 67% of Villa fans think Tyrone Mings is a liability for the team after his performance in their recent 3-1 defeat against Chelsea – when he was at fault for Romelu Lukaku’s goal – this could pave the way for Gerrard to sign Phillips this month and create a solid centre-back partnership alongside Ezri Konsa, potentially fixing the issue of their leaky defence, with 30 goals conceded in 19 league games.

With just four appearances under his belt for Liverpool across all competitions so far this season, a potential move to Villa could be very appealing for Phillips, who has been labelled as a “monster” on the pitch by Jurgen Klopp. If he would be guaranteed regular game-time under Gerrard’s guidance, it would benefit Liverpool at the same time by reaping what they see as a suitable transfer fee for him.

With Villa also being linked with a move for fellow Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, Phillips could be a much easier deal to secure given the Merseyside club’s reported willingness to sell him this month.
