This sensationalist garbage in football is nothing new…

A few years ago, the New York Times ran a really interesting piece on the Ajax youth academy and the ascent of a young player in Dutch football. It was excellent, interesting and original journalism. It’s a well-known subject that was taken and ripped open to reveal plenty of secrets about one of football’s most spectacular factories. Interestingly, it was published on their website, but it certainly would have been worthy of print in the newspaper and the effort to fork out the cash for the publication.

The newspaper industry is on it’s way down, with total closure projected around the 2020’s. Does that give a pardon to the level of hyperbole and sensationalism we see in the newspapers regularly? I’m not entirely convinced. With sports—in fact it stretches well beyond just sporting events—people are told what they need to have some kind of interest in. Why does someone else control the space over my head and tell me I should listen to Ed Sheeran when Led Zeppelin will do me just fine? Furthermore, why should I be interested in two footballers who don’t really see eye-to-eye avoiding a handshake situation forced upon them by a governing body who should know better? It’s a nothing story and yet it’s been made into ever-lasting headlines. As Sky Sports put it just prior to writing this (conveniently) all eyes will be on Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra this weekend.

It’s headlines that will be across this weekend’s newspapers, but it’s not new, is it? Industry leaders 20-years ago wouldn’t have known about the impact of iphones and tablets and online reading material so near in the future. Were the headlines back then talking about the intricacies of Ajax’s youth setup or the growth of smaller clubs in a game that was accelerating forward at pace? No, there was nonsense and garbage that was equal to what we see now, but somewhere there are groups of people who believe it to be newsworthy.

Sports Illustrated is the best sports publication available bar none. Sports Illustrated offer stories across a number of sports that are meaningful, well thought out and often missed by other relevant publications despite being right there in front of their eyes. But some of the content of SI is spread across all their media channels; yes, they have a number of fantastic writers who contribute to their site regularly, but their weekly magazine is where the good stuff is. Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback is essential reading for anyone even remotely interested in the NFL, and we’re lucky to have it available online. But would he need to alter his stories to the more glamorized garbage if they only appeared in the magazine, whereby people would have to shell out for the opportunity to read? Certainly not. The company wouldn’t allow it.

But stories like Brendan Rodgers and Andre Villas-Boas being on the verge of the sack is easy, it’s pedestrian and it’s a little shameful considering the resources and contacts that many journalists now have in the game. I want to read stories like the rise of Robert Griffin III, from upbringings to NFL superstar with the Washington Redskins; I want to read the reports on the bounty scandal with the New Orleans Saints; I want to understand why the NHL is locking out it’s players and all the intricacies of the current work stoppage; I couldn’t care less who an England international slept with six-months ago.

But you also see the difference in reporting and content of certain newspapers. Not all of them need to sell with the sensationalist, gossipy headlines. The Times now has a pay wall but has a number of very good and interesting sports writers working for them. Newspapers are suffering because of the technological advances and the fact that you don’t need to make the trip in the morning to pick up a newspaper.

Plenty of people see through it, and plenty of people want news stories and journalism that is worthwhile and needs to be read. But many newspapers are giving us something else. And it’s in spite of the dying industry.

Phillips Believes Teammate Could Be The Next Ryan Giggs

Blackpool striker Kevin Phillips has claimed that Tom Ince could be as good as Ryan Giggs in the future after the winger’s superb early season form attracted the attention of Manchester United.

Phillips says he already sees a bit of Giggs in the youngsters and that, with or without Blackpool, Ince will be in the Premier League next season.

“I certainly believe he can play in the Premier League. He’s matured. He is a level headed kid,” Phillips told talkSPORT.

“I believe he can go right to the top. I’d like to see him see the year out at Blackpool and if for some reason we don’t go up at the end of the season I’m sure he will go on to bigger and better things. But he is certainly good enough.

“He has got everything. He reminds me of a young Giggs. He runs at players, he has got fantastic delivery, he scores goal and, if he loses the ball, his head doesn’t go down, he gets on with it and tries to win it back. I certainly believe he will go all the way.”

City and Ajax in crucial Champions League game

The heat around tonight’s Champions League clash between Ajax and Manchester City is certainly rising, with both team’s managers labeling the fixture as a must win game. Neither side have recorded a win yet in group D, leaving City in 3rd with just one point, and Ajax bottom with no points from two games.

The two teams will battle it out at the Amsterdam Arena tonight, however, whichever team fails to capture the three points can consider their Champions League ambitions to be all but over, in a difficult group with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund currently holding the qualifying positions.

Citizens boss Roberto Mancini has told reporters: “People think it will be easy on Wednesday but Ajax have a good young team and will play well. It is more difficult away from home.

“Maybe as a club, we need more experience, but we have good players and that’s why we should be in the second stage.

“We still have a chance to go through – but we must take our chances” said the Italian.

Meanwhile, Ajax coach Frank de Boer has stressed that a win tonight for the four-time European champions is vital.

“If you want to stay in Europe after the winter break, whether in the Champions League or Europa League, we need a result tomorrow.

“We believe in it. The Real [Madrid] match was a poor match for us and in the Borussia Dortmund game we were unlucky. Tomorrow is different.

“Manchester City are a good team but we have a good team as well and we have faith in a good result.”

The former Holland international went on to describe some of the differences between the two clubs in action tonight.

“We have no money like that so we have to be inventive and creative and we try to use our academy to get good development of young players. That’s how we survive.

“I like it more that way than just buying them, even though that’s much easier. It’s a philosophy. We have a different philosophy” added de Boer.

Liverpool v Reading – Match Preview

Liverpool welcome Reading to Anfield on Saturday, with both teams in desperate need of Premier League points.

All eyes will once again be on Luis Suarez, after the Uruguayan striker became involved in a diving row during Liverpool’s last Premier League fixture – a 0-0 draw with Stoke City.

Jose Reina faces a late fitness test on a hamstring injury picked up on international duty with Spain, whilst Liverpool will also be without striker Fabio Borini for a minimum of three months.

The 21-year-old broke his foot whilst on international duty with Italy, with his injury meaning Suarez is Liverpool’s only fit senior striker.

Jonjo Shelvey is available having served a three match ban for the red card he picked up during the recent defeat to Manchester United.

Midfielder Mikele Leigertwood has been passed fit after recovering from a dead leg.

Reading boss Brian McDermott has no further injury concerns as the club seek their first Premier League win of the season.

Crewe revert to an initialism to turn form around

After the disappointing home defeat to Yeovil a week ago, few Crewe fans would have subscribed to the wholesome feeling of optimism that has illustrated Steve Davis’ reign so far, an era that is fast approaching its one year anniversary.

With injuries, players struggling for form and questions about the oversight on loan signings, it was the first spell of turbulence in Davis’ fledgling career in pro-management and, with wrangling over a new contract rolling along in the background, there would be no illusions on the task the 47 year old faced in order to turn a run of poor form, yielding just two wins in eleven more specifically, around.

Davis had a week off to gather his thoughts and, as noted in the aftermath of the Yeovil defeat, trawl the pages of player availability to possibly add a striker in the face of Ajay Leitch-Smith’s long term injury and young Max Clayton’s struggles to adapt to the rigorous demands of League One.

In came Fulham’s 21-year-old Finn Lauri Dalla Valle, shortened affectionately to LDV, on trial, meaning he was due to sit out of Saturday’s empathic 4-1 FA Cup victory over League Two side Wycombe Wanderers at Gresty Road. There was no shortage of firepower on display in that win as Paul Pogba, Mark Ellis, Chuks Aneke and Luke Murphy all showed a goal-scoring touch in a confidence-boosting afternoon, but that did nothing, it seems, to change Davis’s mind, Dalla Valle was signed on a month’s deal on Monday.

It is worth adding that the handsome victory would have done very little to boost confidence on the terraces in terms of league form which is clearly, as always should be, the over-riding priority for a struggling team. Yet, equally, it was nice to have an afternoon littered with goals and one-sided flow of play to escape from the paucity of the everyday slog of league football. However, Crewe went behind first once more, and Aneke, Matt Tootle, Michael West, and Pogba were all guilty of wasting chances to add to the tally, a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal also a relevant trouble alongside a lack of confidence at the back.

Two days later, and it was back to league duty with a tough looking visit to the side lying fifth in the table. However, it took the Fulham youngster just five minutes, on Tuesday night’s trip to Doncaster, to prove Davis’s judgement correct. His early goal at the Keepmoat, just the 6th time in 19 games Crewe have struck first in a match, set things up for a convincing victory in which, for once, the Alex back-line saw no real problems, apart from a Iain Hume effort which rolled wide and Paul Keegan’s effort that hit the bar, Donny seldom threatened and Paul Pogba’s goal finished the game with ten minutes to go, the ex-Wrexham striker’s 6th of the season as he adapts slowly, and positively, to league football.

Whisper it quietly if you will, but it looks like, within a week, Davis may have dragged his side back to an upward curve. Chuks Aneke, after being handed a lot of criticism for his lethargic performance against Yeovil, seems to have realised his potential after a sublime pass for Dalla Valle’s opener, the most notable contribution in a display of neat touches and elegant control to thread the attack together. Michael West delivered the corner for Pogba’s effort suggesting we have seen vast improvement from set pieces, something that has long been needed. Chances for Kelvin Mellor, who had a goal disallowed for offside, and Abdul Osman, who drew a decent stop from Michael Woods in the Doncaster goal, obvious implication that the free-flowing football is back and creating chances for the more unheralded members of the team, a potent goal-threat coming right throughout the XI rather than restricted to just the usual suspects.

Alan Martin was called into action to save from Robbie Blake and then Billy Paynter at the death as Doncaster piled on some pressure, but Crewe, led by the ever-excellent Mark Ellis who is burgeoning into a wonderful piece of transfer business, held firm to keep their first clean sheet in nine games to help crawl further away from the relegation spots into the warmer regions of mid-table. Davis will not dwell on such a brilliant result however, as he will understand the importance of the next fixture, at home to Colchester this coming Saturday, as the latest mark to keep moving in the right direction. The potential was always there, it is now the time for Crewe to realise it.

Manchester United target Roma starlet

Manchester United are preparing a January bid for AS Roma youngster Erik Lamela, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The Premier League side are said to have had a summer approach for the Argentine rejected by the Rome club, but are set to return once the transfer window re-opens.

The figure offered was in the region of £13m and it’s likely that they will up that sum to tempt the Serie A giants.

Despite Roma suffering an underwhelming start to the season, Lamela has bagged eight goals, a total that no other player in the division has been able to equal.

The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the top emerging talents in world football and has been previously compared to Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

He joined his current club in 2011 from River Plate for an estimated fee of £12m plus add-ons.

With Roma struggling to move forward, Lamela may be tempted to jump ship to increase his chances of making the Argentinian squad for the 2014 World Cup.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is said to see the tricky wide man as a replacement for Nani, who is expected to leaving the club in the not too distant future.

Roma are believed to be against selling one of their most promising talents, but could be tempted at the right price.

Transfer Deals Bring Even More Optimism To Millwall

Oh what a week it has been…

The Lions have had a bid accepted for one player, bid for another, a cup draw, two racism allegations, and the small matter of South East London Derby against Charlton.

The Charlton game was a rough as you can get for a derby; plenty of niggling fouls disrupting play. Charlton came for the point, and got exactly that. 0-0 it finished.

But yet again for the wrong reason this games hit the headlines. Emmanuel Frimpong and Danny Haynes (both were unused subs) claimed racial abuse by Millwall fans, this was not reported through the regular channels, but moaning on Twitter.

Frimpong went on to delete this tweet but Haynes’s tweet is still there. Millwall have confirmed this week that both players do not wish to make a police complaint, but as there is no evidence, they consider this case to be closed.

How is this right?

They can make these allegations on twitter, whether it is true or not, to thousands of followers who will more than take what is written as the truth. A player can say what he likes, and no matter what, mud sticks, especially when you’re Millwall.

This is the fourth time Millwall have been accused of racial abuse this season, but how many times have Millwall been found guilty of racial abuse? None!

Anyway, on to happier news, this week a bid for on-loan defender Mark Beevers was accepted by Sheffield Wednesday.

Beevers has been a rock in the middle of Millwall’s defence and he has not lost since joining the club. A great way to spend £250k.

Also fair play to Millwall for getting this done quickly, usually we are quite slow when it comes to dealing in the transfer market but not this time. There was more and more pressure from Wednesday fans to recall Beevers from his loan, so in come Millwall with a bid.

So well done the club, and also Dave Jones, on one of possibly the last things he’ll do as Wednesday boss.

We might have signed Beevers, but the clubs transfer work is far from over ahead of January…

The Lions have tabled a £1million offer for on-loan striker Chris Wood of West Brom.

It’s not seen yet whether this will be accepted as no one knows whether West Brom want to keep him or not. Also Wood has a clause in his contract to add on a extra year to the current deal which West Brom may use it, or that this may just be used as a bargaining tool for more money.

Now this would definitely be shown as a statement by the club, as after all, our record signing cost £800k. Compare that to some of the other clubs in the Championship, like Jordan Rhodes at £8million, shows you what we have to deal with.

Now I’m not saying that if we sign Wood we will be promoted, but at the moment we are 7th and I think with Wood signing we could be around that position if not higher at the end of the season.

Millwall fans, where could we realistically finish if we sign Wood permanently? COYL

Everton skipper hungry to reach more milestones

Phil Neville has stated his intention to play for another two or three years after achieving a landmark of 500 Premier League appearances against Wigan on Boxing Day.

The Everton captain returned earlier than expected from a serious knee injury to play in his side’s 2-1 victory at West Ham last weekend, and although the former United man turns 36 next month, he still feels he can contribute to the Toffees’ cause in subsequent seasons.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, Neville spoke of his hunger to reach his next milestone of 700 career appearances in total.

“The win against Wigan was more important but the 500 appearances is something I have been aiming for for the last couple of seasons. I knew it would probably come this season and I have been striving for it, trying to keep myself fit.

“When it came I thought ‘dear me, I am getting old’. When you get to my age, these landmarks keep coming – my next aim is to get another 14 games to get to 700 career appearances.”

“The pleasing thing is that I have still got the hunger and desire to play on for two or three seasons. I want to play in every game and as long as I retain that hunger I will be happy. I want to train every day, I want to play every game and I want to play my part.

“When you get to 35, and I am 36 next month, the key bits are: one, your fitness and how your body feels – my body feels good, and two, can you still make a contribution to the team – and I think that I am contributing.”

Midfielder available for Everton’s Boxing Day clash

Darron Gibson is available to play in Everton’s Boxing Day match with Wigan, after the Toffees decided to appeal against the midfielder’s sending off on Saturday.

The Republic of Ireland international was shown a straight red card for a high tackle towards the end of his side’s 2-1 victory over West Ham, with replays showing it was a harsh decision.

Referee Anthony Taylor had already given West Ham striker Carlton Cole his marching orders earlier in the Premier League game for a similar offence.

Everton needed to submit the paperwork to the Football Association by 1pm today and the appeal means Gibson will be able to play on Boxing Day, before his case is heard on 27 December.

“The Blues will submit the paperwork on Christmas Eve and due to the FA protocol it does mean that Gibson will be able to participate in the Boxing Day clash with Wigan Athletic,” read a statement released on the club’s official website.

“Everton’s case will be heard on Thursday 27 December and expect to hear the outcome of the appeal later this week.”

David Moyes bemoaned the performance of the match officials after his side’s victory, and the Scot is fully behind an appeal, believing both players have a good case for their bans to be overturned.

“I don’t think you can put the word ‘frivolous’ next to this,” the Everton boss told BBC Sport.

“It’s worth the appeal and it’s not a stupid appeal.

Chelsea and City will need to pay £20m to land Etxebarria

Real Betis playmaker Benat Etxebarria will not be sold for a single penny under his £20million buy-out clause according to manager Pepe Mel.

It was thought that both Manchester City and Chelsea would look to strike a deal for the Spanish star in the January transfer window, but the pair have now been warned off with Mel’s recent comments.

Benat has been a sensation in La Liga this season causing both Real Madrid and Barcelona to join the race for him and also prompting him to earn regular national squad call ups.

If you can break into that Spanish national team midfield then you must be doing something right and City and Chelsea may yet go back with offers to Betis.

The Betis boss has conceded that if the £20million clause is activated then he will have no choice but to lose his main man, but anything less is unacceptable.

“Benat’s clause is €20million and he will only leave for €20million,” Mel told Spanish reporters as reported by Sky Sports.

“To sell him for anything less would be a disaster. The club must defend its position and Benat knows that. To be able to go the market and find a replacement, the only number is €20million.

“He has one more year left on his contract and he can fulfil that.”
