Liverpool fans love Harvey Elliott update

Some Liverpool supporters are delighted after Jurgen Klopp provided a positive injury update on the progress of youngster Harvey Elliott.

The 18-year-old is one of the most exciting young players in the country, having arrived at Anfield from Fulham back in 2019.

Elliott was a key player for the Reds at the beginning of the season, starting three Premier League matches and performing well every time, registering seven shots and creating five chances across those starts.

Unfortunately, the teenager suffered a broken ankle in the 3-0 win at Leeds United back in September and he has been recovering ever since.

It now looks as though Elliott’s return could be close, however, with Klopp confirming in his pre-Crystal Palace press conference [via James Pearce on Twitter] that he ‘should be ready’ after the upcoming international break.

Chennai anxious for turnaround against Mumbai

Cricinfo previews the 21st match of the IPL between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at Brabourne Stadium

The Preview by Nitin Sundar24-Mar-2010Match factsMumbai v Chennai, in Mumbai
Thursday, March 25
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Suresh Raina is anxious for a turnaround in Chennai’s fortunes•Indian Premier League

Big pictureThe importance of momentum in the shortest format of the game cannot be over-emphasised, and the two teams that line up for match 21 of the IPL illustrate this in contrasting styles. After finding a way past Yusuf Pathan in their opening game, Mumbai Indians have epitomised efficiency, be it in their in-form batting line-up, led by Sachin Tendulkar, or their star-studded bowling attack, which has achieved success by keeping things simple. Despite the slip-up against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the one team that has managed to look more complete than them in this tournament, Mumbai came back strongly to brush aside Kolkata Knight Riders with a concerted strategy to bowl in the block-hole, a script that was followed faithfully by everyone from Lasith Malinga to Harbhajan Singh. Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo have not made an impact with bat or ball, and that’s not even been a cause for concern, showing how well the team has worked as a unit.Contrast that with Chennai Super Kings, whose IPL campaign thus far has been a study in the art of flattering to deceive. MS Dhoni singlehandedly batted them to victory against Kolkata, but after turning in a clinical performance to out-punch Delhi Daredevils, Chennai have veered from the basics, failed to seize the crucial moments and lost their way.If hare-brained batting in the end overs cost them the game against Kings XI Punjab, their bowlers’ inability to maintain control in the death overs did them in against Bangalore. Nothing captures their current woes better than the way their most impressive suit – their catching – has fallen apart. While Chennai were spectacular in the field against Delhi, R Ashwin and Murali Vijay put down decisive sitters from Robin Uthappa on Tuesday. Add to the mix some questionable team decisions that have backfired – the inclusion of George Bailey, and the decision to use Ashwin in the slog overs – and you have a side that desperately needs its most influential player back.Form guide (most recent first)Mumbai WLWW
Chennai LLWWLTeam talkIf Dhoni makes it, he could not have timed his comeback better. Chennai’s coach Stephen Fleming said that the team management was happy with his progress, and he seemed at ease during practice on Wednesday evening, but the final call will be taken on match day. If he’s available, Parthiv Patel will relinquish the big gloves, and Murali Vijay could move up to open the innings. Bailey looked all at sea during his scratchy innings against Bangalore, and in Justin Kemp’s continued absence, Thissara Perera could take his spot.
For the hosts, Sanath Jayasuriya could continue to sit out after an indifferent start to the tournament. “We want him to play explosive cricket. If he is not going to fulfill that role i don’t think he is doing his job. We need to give him time and he has only played two games,” Robin Singh, the Mumbai coach, assessed Jayasuriya’s prospects.
Shikhar Dhawan looked impressive against Kolkata, in the absence of the injured Ambati Rayudu who is likely to miss out once again. Aditya Tare’s dodgy showing behind the stumps is a minor source for worry, given that Mumbai don’t have a replacement wicketkeeper in the squad.
Previously…Chennai 2 Mumbai 2In 2008, Chennai drew first blood in this rivalry with Hayden’s pyrotechnics just about outlasting Mumbai in the first encounter in Chennai. Mumbai had their revenge in the return match, winning by nine wickets, thanks to a Jayasuriya special. Mumbai prevailed again in the opening match of the 2009 edition, at Newlands, but Hayden returned the favour with a measured innings in Port Elizabeth, which all but knocked Mumbai out of the tournament. In the spotlightMuttiah Muralitharan has gone out of the way to emphasise that he has only looked to contain batsmen, but the purple cap on his head suggests he’s also been attacking. Murali has always been a handful for left-handers, and of late, he has perfected the art of preying on right-hand batsmen with a nagging round-the-wicket line, making both the offspinner and the doosra potent weapons. Ask Mahela Jayawardene and Virat Kohli respectively. He has got the topspinner working well too, as Rahul Dravid found out on Tuesday. Murali’s battle against Sachin Tendulkar could well emerge as the most important sub-plot in this match.
Barring one stupendous innings against Delhi, Matthew Hayden is yet to really impose himself on the opposition this year. He will be up against Harbhajan Singh tomorrow, another duel to watch out for, especially when he’s batting with the Mongoose.Prime numbersMumbai don’t have a single bowler in the top 10 wicket-takers so far in the IPL. Harbhajan with four wickets is 14th on the list, while Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga have picked up three each. With 28 fours, Sachin Tendulkar is second in the list of boundary-hitters, eight behind Jacques Kallis. Hayden, along with Uthappa, has hit the most sixes in the tournament – 11. Tendulkar has hit none. With two fifties each in four innings, Tendulkar and Saurabh Tiwary are tied in second spot in the list of players with most 50-plus scores. Chennai’s batsmen have between them managed only three 50-plus scores in five matches. The chatter”We wanted to use him as a batsman. In this format you hardly get on an average 25% of the balls through to the keeper. For the role we have given him we are happy with his performance.”

“We dropped two catches and also didn’t bat well. I think, we have to relook at our batting line-up.”

India need 'intensity needed for international game'

Kirsten blamed fatigue last year, not much has changed on that account. Can India inspire themselves to a different result?

Sidharth Monga30-Apr-2010OverviewShort on intensity, brought down by the short ball, India failed to beat any regular side bar Bangladesh last year•Getty Images

It seems like yesterday. In their title defence, at the World Twenty20 last year, India had failed to beat a single regular side bar Bangladesh. Gary Kirsten was complaining about IPL fatigue. They lacked, he said, the “intensity that you need at the international game”. The other game, the IPL, had started a few days after their back-to-back series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, and finished about a week before the World Twenty20. “We come into the tournament without being able to connect with the players at all. We also had players who were carrying niggles into this tournament.”It so seems like yesterday, for the rest of the time between the two World Twenty20s has been one blur of series after series, ending, yet again, with the IPL. Starting early September, India have been to Sri Lanka for a tri-series, to South Africa for the Champions Trophy, have played in the Champions League, a seven-ODI series against Australia, hosted Sri Lanka for a full tour, have been on a full tour of Bangladesh, followed by a quickie from South Africa, and finally the IPL.It also seems like yesterday because MS Dhoni’s departure press conference was almost identical to the one last year. Fatigue and tight schedules, he says, are the reality for an India cricketer. You just shrug your shoulders, and get on with it. And he is the kind of player and captain who will get on with it. At least he knows the selectors haven’t chosen players carrying niggles. Or so we are told.Kirsten, whose complaints last year didn’t exactly endear himself to the men who decide when the cricketers play whom, again pointed towards the disadvantage India start with. “The Indian players may feel the heat of it more,” he said, “because all of them played in the IPL, but our responsibility is to go out there and ensure that we are well prepared. We will do what we can in these circumstances.”He knows, and the team knows, they have to get up to the “intensity you need at international level”. Knowing this is the reality of an India cricketer, time to shrug the shoulders and get on with it. Then again it can’t be so bad: as reluctant participants, they had done the same in the first issue of the World Twenty20.Strength and weaknessesThat there is enough firepower in the side is beyond doubt. Even in the absence of Virender Sehwag, it is a batting line-up to contend with. There is enough balance in the side to be able to play four specialist bowlers and one out of Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan. The bowlers world over know there isn’t much time for ducking and leaving in Twenty20s, and also that the young Indians are not the best attackers of the ball headed for the throat, so there will be bouncers on display. And on flat pitches, Indian bowlers have not been the best around when the slog is on.Twenty20 pedigreeIndia haven’t exactly been a hot Twenty20 side since their title triumph in the inaugural event. Since then they have lost seven matches and won five, including ones against Ireland and Bangladesh.Key menSuresh Raina, coming off a fifty in the IPL final, is the form player, and will have to transform that promise on the big stage. He will want to score a majority of the middle-order runs.In the absence of Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir has a big job to do at the top.Harbhajan Singh’s role will be significant on the slower tracks in the Caribbean.X-factorA charged-up Dhoni can be the difference between a lethargic side and an inspired one, as he showed on more than one occasion in his IPL side’s winning campaign. He has the makings of India’s greatest captain ever, and is one of the best going around in the world today. And captaincy – one extra second of calmness, one field placement in a crucial over, one choice of a part-time bowler – can be the game-changer in Twenty20s.Vital stats Among the Test-playing nations, only Bangladesh have played fewer T20 internationals than India’s 20.Surprisingly Dhoni’s strike-rate in Twenty20 internationals is only 105.95.Eighteen bowlers have taken more than Harbhajan Singh’s tally of 16 wickets, but Harbhajan is India’s most successful T20 international.

Leeds: Whites open to Bobby Kamwa exit

Young Leeds United centre-forward Bobby Kamwa could leave the club over the coming days, according to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Lack of January activity

The Whites haven’t exactly been busy when it comes to winter signings, with Victor Orta yet to finalise a senior January incoming.

RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson is the main target ahead of Monday’s deadline, with the Whites mulling over a third bid for the attacking midfielder.

Cody Drameh has joined Cardiff City on loan, whereas Crysencio Summerville has been linked with a move to Hamburg. It now seems as if Kamwa, described by Joe Donnohue as a player with ‘fast feet’, could also be on the move before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The Latest: Smyth’s claim

Smyth shared a transfer state of play for The Yorkshire Evening Post on Wednesday, providing updates on the club’s pursuit of Aaronson and the chances of Summerville leaving Elland Road.

When it came to exits, the journalist revealed that Kamwa isn’t in Leeds’ plans and could leave before the end of the month with his contract set to expire in the summer.

The Verdict: Correct call

Kamwa made 11 Premier League 2 appearances last season but hasn’t featured during the current campaign, so looking to move him on is the best for all involved.

The Whites have brought in Mateo Joseph Fernandez to bolster their attacking under-23 ranks this month and also have the likes of Sam Greenwood and Max Dean in that position.

Therefore, Kamwa finding a new club lower down the leagues over the coming days could be beneficial instead of waiting until the summer, although Leeds fans may be more worried over any prospective incomings than a possible exit for the 21-year-old.

Ainda aguardando reforços, Dorival Júnior esboça time no São Paulo

Boucher dropped, de Villiers to keep

AB de Villiers will keep wicket for South Africa during the limited-overs leg of their tour of West Indies instead of Mark Boucher

AB de Villiers will keep wicket for South Africa during the limited-overs leg of their tour of West Indies instead of Mark Boucher, whose place in the team is now uncertain. Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, said the new selection panel led by Andrew Hudson was trying out new ideas ahead of the 2011 World Cup, and having de Villiers keep gave him more options.”AB will be starting with the gloves in the limited-overs matches,” Smith said ahead of the first Twenty20 international in Antigua. “There is a new selection committee and a few new ideas. We only have something like 15 ODIs before we get to India for the World Cup, so we have to make every one of them count.”Boucher, 33, has been a near permanent fixture in South Africa’s XI across formats since he made his debut in 1997 and has played 131 Tests, 291 ODIs and 25 Twenty20s. Smith said the absence of Boucher’s experience in the line-up would have to be made up by the rest of the players.”When a guy [like Boucher] has played over 300 ODIs you are always going to miss that experience. He has been a talisman of the side for a long period of time now. He has been part of a core group of senior players who have performed regularly,” Smith said. “The selectors have taken the decision now to look ahead at some new options, and certainly having AB keep allows you one or two extra options in the line-up. Andrew Hudson has arrived here today and we will sit down together and select the team for the game.”Smith also reflected on a “disappointing” World Twenty20 campaign – South Africa exited in the Super Eights – and said they would be “trying a few new things” to “examine the structure” of the team in Twenty20 and one-day internationals.”The team has taken a lot of flak back home and rightly so. We have got to take responsibility for that,” Smith said. “The team has really worked hard in the last few days we have had here in Antigua, and it is up to the team to perform well here and regain face with the public back home. We have got a few new players who have arrived here and they will provide fresh impetus and momentum. Confidence is an important thing and we need to start the West Indies tour strongly.”South Africa play back-to-back Twenty20 internationals against West Indies on May 19 and 20 before the five-ODI series begins on May 22.

Celtic: Devlin reacts to Ajeti exit rumour

Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has been reacting to rumours that Albian Ajeti’s return to Basel is off.

The Lowdown: Reports from Switzerland

The Switzerland striker was expected to leave the club this month, along with Vasilis Barkas and Boli Bolingoli.

The striker was heavily linked with a move back to Basel, especially after Arthur Cabral’s €16m (£13.3m) move to Fiorentina from the Swiss club went through.

However, according to Swiss outlet Basler Zeitung, as relayed by 67 Hail Hail, a move for Ajeti doesn’t look likely, with the 24-year-old not fitting the model at St Jakob Park. His wage demands are also too much for Basel, with Devlin now giving his thoughts to the news.

The Latest: Devlin’s comments

Devlin was asked by a Celtic supporter on The Athletic about Ajeti and a move to Basel being off the cards.

Here’s what he had to say in reply, believing that it could be a ‘negotiation tactic’ for the forward’s services and name-checking Cabral’s recent exit:

“Possibility that’s grandstanding/negotiation tactic with them receiving 15 million euros for Arthur Cabral.”

The Verdict: Still time…

As Devlin mentioned this morning, a move to Basel wasn’t one which needed to be finalised today, with the Swiss market still open for another few weeks.

It’s not just Switzerland where the market stays open, though, with a number of countries still allowed to do business going into February.

Should the likes of Ajeti, Barkas and Bolingoli fail to seal Parkhead exits today, at least the Hoops will still have a chance to find the trio a new home outside of the UK over the coming weeks.
