Hussey and Patel too much for Lancashire

Nottinghamshire made it four wins from their opening four matches in the Friends Provident t20 with a convincing victory over Lancashire by 26 runs

Nottinghamshire made it four wins from their opening four matches in the Friends Provident t20 with a convincing victory over Lancashire by 26 runs. Captain David Hussey top-scored with 44 while openers Alex Hales and Ali Brown put on 63 for the first wicket as the hosts made 157 for 7 from their 20 overs at Trent Bridge.Lancashire seamer Sajid Mahmood took a Twenty20 best of 4 for 21 to upstage former England team-mate James Anderson, who conceded 39 runs from his four overs without taking a wicket. Left-arm spinner Samit Patel then took 3 for 26, with three wickets in five balls as Lancashire stumbled in the middle overs and, despite 43 from Tom Smith, were bowled out for 131 with seven balls remaining.Having batted second in all three of their victories in the competition so far, Nottinghamshire were asked to set a target by Lancashire skipper Glen Chapple on a pitch being used for the third time. But it made little difference to Hales and Brown, who put on 57 in the Powerplay overs, with Hales hooking Anderson for six in the fast bowler’s first over.Tall right-hander Hales impressed again with five fours and a six before he was run out by a direct hit from Simon Katich at point – although replays showed the bails had been knocked off by the keeper’s gloves – and Brown was lbw to left-arm spinner Stephen Parry while Mahmood picked up three wickets in the final over.Accurate bowling from Darren Pattinson and Stuart Broad put the visitors under pressure early on and Pattinson picked up a well-earned wicket when Paul Horton dragged a slower ball on to his stumps. Katich was lbw in Patel’s first over and he followed up immediately to bowl Stephen Moore first ball, before castling Steven Croft with a beauty that was angled in before turning to hit the top of off-stump.Smith and Nathan McCullum added 46 in five overs with McCullum hitting two sixes on his way to 26 but once Smith was spectacularly run out by Hussey and McCullum was caught on the boundary off Broad, Lancashire’s chances were gone.Broad sealed the win by having Parry caught at long on to keep Nottinghamshire top of the North Group with a 100% record.

Vou iniciar os treinos e tentar entender a ideia do Fábio (Carille), me adaptar onde ele achar melhor. Como jogador, quero jogar, né? É uma resposta padrão. Quero jogar, até de goleiro (risos). Mentira. Vamos ver onde o Fábio vai achar melhor.

McCann on Sunderland manager shortlist

Grant McCann is one of the candidates to become Sunderland’s next manager, according to Sky Sports News.

The lowdown

Sunderland are looking to appoint a replacement for Lee Johnson, who was sacked following a 6-0 rout at the hands of Bolton Wanderers in late January.

Mike Dodds took caretaker charge of The Black Cats for Saturday’s shock defeat against bottom-of-the-table Doncaster Rovers.

McCann had recorded back-to-back wins, pulling Hull City ten points clear of the Championship’s bottom three, before he was sacked by the new regime at the MKM Stadium last month (via BBC Sport).

The latest

Roy Keane, who managed the club between 2006 and 2008, appears to be the frontrunner at present, having been interviewed for the vacancy.

But should Keane decided against returning to the dugout, Sky Sports report Sunderland do have other options in mind.

They include McCann, former Celtic boss Neil McCann and 73-year-old veteran Neil Warnock.

The verdict

Would McCann be a good appointment? Well, the standout achievement on his CV is leading Hull back to the second tier as League One champions following their relegation in 2019/20.

He’s a manager with ‘staggering’ ambition, in the words of Liam Hoden, Deputy Head of Sport at the Doncaster Free Press, which is sure to be music to the ears of Sunderland fans desperate to see their club back where they belong.

And in more good news for supporters, his style of play is appealing too. Barry Fry, who oversaw McCann at Peterborough, has called him ‘brilliant’ and gushed over his ‘attractive’ brand of football.

In other manager news, this treble-winner has expressed his interest.

South Africa complete crushing win

What was a rout on day three was harder graft on day four as South Africa’s fast bowlers, for the second time in as many days, worked their way through the West Indies line-up to deliver a comprehensive 163-run victory

What was a rout on day three proved harder graft on day four as South Africa’s bowlers, for the second time in as many days, worked their way through the West Indies line-up to deliver a comprehensive 163-run victory. For West Indies fans, the past fifteen years has been a case of dragging positives out the wreckage of defeat and today only Chris Gayle, who resisted stoically for 73, and Dwayne Bravo emerged with much credit. While in charge of England’s bowlers recently Ottis Gibson had twice watched South Africa denied by iron-willed resistance, but in his first Test as West Indies coach there were no heroics from the batting team.Instead it was Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn, the most incisive new-ball pair in the world, who took the plaudits. Fast bowling has suffered under the torrent of lifeless pitches and endless cricket in recent times, but the South African pair gave the few spectators at the Queen’s Park Oval memories of old as they efficiently chipped their way through the tired surface and West Indies’ top-order.Graeme Smith rewarded his bowlers with some rest when, on day three, he chose not to enforce the follow on and South Africa began the day by cautiously extending their lead to 456 before finally declaring after an hour this morning. It was an unnecessarily conservative effort first-up from the tourists but they still had more than enough time to complete their task.Morkel was the man who did the damage early on in the first innings, and he picked up from where he left off immediately second time round, trapping Travis Dowlin in front with his first ball of the innings. It brought Brendan Nash to the crease, batting at least two places too high at No. 3. Nash had forged a Test career on nuggety defiance but in circumstances seemingly made for him, he was instead intent on swiping his way to glory. Inevitably, he was soon found out, pushing loosely outside off stump to give Steyn an early wicket. At that stage it looked as though West Indies may fold quickly again, but Gayle found a willing partner in Shivnarine Chanderpaul and launched an entertaining counter-attack. Where in the first innings he tried to block and nurdle, this time round he reverted to his preferred see-ball-hit-ball method. There were some memorable shots as he raced to a half-century in 62 balls, none more so than a check-drive straight back over Morkel’s head for six. Yet throughout there was the feeling he was West Indies’ only hope. Gayle may well possess the broadest shoulders in the Test game but the burden of carrying this team must be taking its toll.He could only watch on helplessly as Chanderpaul lost concentration and fenced aimlessly at Jacques Kallis to end a 55-run stand and the home team’s best period of resistance. Thereafter South Africa steadily chizzled away as the game meandered to its inevitable result.Paul Harris did his best Ashley Giles impression, offering little more than accuracy as Smith rotated his pace bowlers from the other end. Gayle’s continued defiance lured optimistic West Indians into dreaming that he may be able to repeat his marathon hundred at Adelaide last year, but this time conditions were more testing and the task more futile.Eventually Morkel landed the killer blow, removing him for the second time in the match. Gayle was pinned on the crease as he played around his front pad and, knowing his team’s fortunes would depart with him, thought longingly about a referral before dragging himself off.Narsingh Deonarine, who had also impressed in Australia, looked fraught throughout his stay here. His movements were exaggerated and edgy and after a couple of well-timed drives, he could not withstand a round-the-wicket attack from Steyn. Hanging on the back foot he played around a full ball to become another West Indian batsman trapped lbw.It ended a useful stand with Bravo who, after surviving a close bat-pad shout, played with the exuberance and flair missing from his first innings. Having stroked his way to 49 he got embroiled, and eventually defeated, in a game of patience with Harris. Sticking with monastic commitment to a line outside leg stump, Harris frustrated Bravo and was eventually rewarded when Bravo chipped tamely to midwicket. Harris has a thoroughly unglamorous role in this side, holding up an end while Steyn and Morkel attack, but he did it well and deserved a reward. As has so often been the case recently, West Indies were left looking to salvage little but pride from a hopeless situation. Instead Dinesh Ramdin gifted Lonwabo Tsotsobe a first Test wicket. While lacking the gifts of his senior colleagues, Tsotsobe was accurate and cut his fingers over the ball effectively to restrict all the batsmen he came up against and deserved some luck.It was left to the spinning duo – Sulieman Benn and Shane Shillingford, who had done well earlier in the day to limit South Africa to 51 runs in 18.3 overs – to bring some cheer to the West Indies fans. The old ball had made survival easier and they batted merrily during a 66-run stand in almost 15 overs. Benn was finally undone by Alviro Petersen and Shillingford duly followed. Fittingly it was Steyn who finished the job, bowling Nelon Pascal off an inside edge to give South Africa their eighth successive victory over West Indies this tour.

West Ham: Moyes must unleash Ashby

Following the news that Arthur Masuaku is set to spend a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, David Moyes has been left somewhat short of options at left-back within his West Ham United squad.

However, with Ben Johnson having proven this season that he is more than capable of operating on the left of the West Ham back four, the 58-year-old Hammers boss could look to utilise the 22-year-old as a backup to first-choice left-back Aaron Cresswell going forwards.

Although, this would then open up a space on the right, and, while it is true that Moyes has the option of Ryan Fredericks, perhaps it would be a smarter move for the Scotsman to take a closer look at one of the club’s up and coming talents in the position – in the shape of Harrison Ashby.

“He’s like a giant”

A graduate of the West Ham academy, the defender has been in spectacular form for the Irons U23 side so far this season, scoring two goals and registering four assists over his 16 Premier League 2 appearances, as well as bagging a further goal and assist over his three outings in the Papa John’s Trophy.

This form has clearly caught the attention of Moyes, who has already handed the 20-year-old three first-team appearances this season – a six-minute Premier League cameo against Arsenal, as well as starts in the 1-0 Europa League defeat against Dinamo Zagreb and the 2-1 Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

As such, it is clear for all to see why there is a considerable amount of excitement surrounding the potential of the right-back, with West Ham podcaster Sam Delaney stating of the Scotland U21 international: “He’s big as well. He’s like a big unit. He’s only young, but he’s like a giant. Usually, you’re used to seeing smaller players in those wing-back positions, but he looked big, strong, he was very fearless, decent on the ball.”

So, while right-back is a position in which Moyes does currently possess a number of options, it would nevertheless appear wise for the 58-year-old to use Masuaku’s absence as a reason to unleash Ashby on a much more regular basis – as the defender appears to have the potential to become a starter for the club in the not too distant future, as long as he is given a chance.

Celtic: McAvennie makes Riley McGree claim

Celtic pundit Frank McAvennie has spoken out on the club’s attempts to sign Riley McGree during the January window, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: McGree and O’Riley

The Hoops brought in five players during the winter window, the last of which was Matt O’Riley from MK Dons.

The midfielder has been a regular under Ange Postecoglou following his arrival, but it seemed as if he may not have been at the top of the club’s midfield shortlist.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-21/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Prior to signing O’Riley, the Hoops were reportedly after McGree and even agreed on a fee for the 5 foot 10 midfielder, who Tim Cahill described as having ‘amazing feet’.

However, the 23-year-old ended up snubbing a move to Glasgow and instead joined Middlesbrough, with McAvennie now talking about the off-field rumours.

The Latest: McAvennie’s comments

As reported by Football Insider, McAvennie believes that O’Riley wasn’t Celtic’s first-choice target and was informed that a move for McGree did indeed fall through, revealing:

“I don’t think O’Riley was the first choice. They were after a guy called Riley McGree but they couldn’t get it done.

“It fell through, that’s what someone told me. Anyway, the point is I bet they are glad they couldn’t get that other deal done.

“I mean, what a move from Celtic. What a player he looks to be. He’s been outstanding so far and he’s a player who arrived without much fanfare.

“He came from MK Dons and he wasn’t one of the Japanese lads who everyone was getting really excited about.

“He deserved that goal last week and I suspect he will only get better the more he plays.”

The Verdict: Not an issue

As McAvennie mentioned, O’Riley has been outstanding so far in green and white. He has already contributed to four Premiership goals in 380 minutes of action and is the club’s joint best performer in the league alongside David Turnbull. [WhoScored]

O’Riley also cost £1.5m, whereas McGree would have set the Hoops back £2.5m. The latter has only played 24 minutes of action for Middlesbrough in the English Championship since signing, so it actually seems as if McGree snubbing Celtic has been a blessing in disguise.
