Jaques and Solanki sink Leicestershire

Phil Jaques gave Worcestershire a handsome leaving present by levering the Royals off the bottom of the Friends Provident t20 North Group with a six-wicket win against Leicestershire at New Road

11-Jul-2010
ScorecardPhil Jaques gave Worcestershire a handsome leaving present by levering the Royals off the bottom of the Friends Provident t20 North Group with a six-wicket win against Leicestershire at New Road.In his last appearance for the county, the Australian left hander made an unbeaten 78 from 48 balls and put on 94 with Vikram Solanki (51no) as the home side raced home with an over to spare.A whirlwind 44 from Paul Nixon enabled Leicestershire to post a demanding total of 171 for 4 but this was not enough as Worcestershire recovered from losing Sanath Jayasuriya (19) and Moeen Ali (5) in the first six overs.Solanki was first to light the fuse with two leg-side sixes off Leicestershire’s hard-pressed attack and then Jaques introduced a subtle touch by reverse sweeping boundaries off the spinners. The target was down to 32 from 20 balls when Solanki moved across his wicket and saw his leg stump flattened by Matthew Hoggard, but in the same over Jaques restored momentum by hoisting the Leicestershire captain for six.Another maximum off Nathan Buck settled the issue as Jaques closed his boundary account with five fours and three sixes in his highest score in this season’s competition. Leicestershire were given a strong start as Brad Hodge followed fellow-Australian David Hussey in becoming the second player to reach 3,000 runs in all Twenty20 competitions around the world. The 35-year-old opener dominated the first half of he innings against a steady Worcestershire attack. James Taylor (14) featured in the biggest partnership of 51 before he was caught on the mid-wicket boundaryHodge eventually accumulated six fours and a six from 38 balls but Leicestershire could have toppled off course when he was run out for 70. Chancing a second run after an initial fumble by Daryl Mitchell at deep cover, he was well beaten by an accurate return to wicketkeeper Ben Cox.It was then that Nixon wrestled the initiative from the home side. In a systematic display of hitting, mostly on the leg side, the veteran left hander smashed seven fours and a six in taking 38 runs from the last 10 balls he received. The last two overs, bowled by Gareth Andrew and Jaysuriya, cost Worcestershire 39 runs but Jaques made sure this was not decisively damaging.

Rangers: Aribo back in form vs St Mirren

Rangers put on a fantastic display today as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men kept their title dreams alive by taking all three points in a 4-0 victory which puts the Ibrox side six points behind their rivals with five games to go.

The Gers dominated in every inch of the pitch with 72% of possession, 22 shots, five big chances and ultimately four goals hitting the back of the net against their opponents this afternoon.

Despite the absence of Alfredo Morelos, Rangers did not disappoint with Kemar Roofe securing his first hat-trick for the club.

He opened the scoring early in the second minute of the game, following up with another in the final moments of the first half and securing his third in the 50th minute during the 4-0 rout of St Mirren.

One player who put in a fantastic performance is Joe Aribo, who put the final nail in the coffin of the game with the fourth goal in the 76th minute, and despite his late strike was massively influential throughout the game.

According to SofaScore, the 25-year-old who was branded “useless” by journalist Zino Mulla was anything but on this occasion, putting a run of poor form behind him. He made five key passes, two tackles and one clearances, winning the majority of his duels combined (13/7) and was successful in 100% of his dribbles over the course of the game.

Aribo definitely made his presence known today after struggling to find his form ever since he returned from the African Cup of Nations in January, with the centre midfielder confessing last month he hasn’t been at his best in recent months:

“I’ve not been at my best compared to how I was before I left for the internationals.”

With no goals and just one assist in his last ten appearances for Rangers, Van Bronckhorst made a brave decision to start Aribo in today’s game but the decision certainly paid off as the midfielder looked like he was back to his best. However, with five crucial games to go in the league, Rangers must push on in the title race with Celtic, and the Nigeria international can’t afford to have any more howlers.

Rangers have an important week of football ahead of them with a difficult clash against Braga in the Europa League quarter-finals second leg on Thursday night and will take on Celtic in the Scottish Cup final on Sunday, so the manager must deploy his best players and channel the confidence from this victory on the games ahead.

Vamos suar sangue – prometeu.

Tendulkar's request for higher sightscreen addressed

The Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club authorities have accommodated Sachin Tendulkar’s request for a higher sightscreen at the Air Force Flats End, but not without a cost

The Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club authorities have accommodated Sachin Tendulkar’s request for a higher sightscreen at the Air Force Flats End, but not without a cost. The sightscreen at the end in question is shorter than the one at the Press Block End, and usually sports two permanent advertising hoardings above it. Tendulkar is shorter than an average batsman, and he has to look up to spot the ball, and because of the angle created he is believed to have found that the sightscreen didn’t completely cover his view.On Sunday, two days before the match, Tendulkar was seen having a long chat with Anurudda Polonowita, the curator, gesturing towards the sightscreen, and pointing towards the height issue. The next day MS Dhoni explained why Tendulkar wanted the height of the sightscreen increased.”We have requested the screen to be increased in height,” Dhoni said, “because Sachin is quite short and when you have a taller bowler bowling to him at an angle, at times the hand crosses the sight screen. We have requested before the game so that no complications arise later.”No complications arose as far as the game is concerned. By 7.30pm, the sightscreen had grown up by about 15 feet. “We did it like that,” said Tone Perera, CEO of Tamil Union, snapping his fingers. “We were under pressure because the match referee had asked us for this.”Other senior club officials, though, had to suppress their disappointment at financial losses that covering the hoardings would incur. The hoardings advertised a bank and a milk product company. The bank sponsors the club team too, which according to the officials, is a main source of their revenue. The officials said that the sightscreen had always been similar and no one had made such a request until Tendulkar did.Tendulkar, though, is known to be a perfectionist when it comes to everything around his batting. More famous among his requests for sightscreen heights to be increased are Mohali, 2005 and Karachi, 2006. In an unrelated chat, on the eve of his becoming the most capped Test player in the world, Tendulkar spoke about his preparations. Even during the SSC Test, where he scored a Test-saving double-century, Tendulkar asked for advertisements above the sightscreen to be covered.”I am not saying cricket is simple, but everything around it, if you keep simple, it becomes relatively easy,” Tendulkar said. “For that, the pre-match preparation is extremely important. In that factor, I feel I have always been prepared. Sometimes I was able to achieve results, sometimes I wasn’t, but my preparations were always there.”

Celtic must unleash Abada

Celtic have the chance to make it to the final of the Scottish Cup this afternoon if they’re able to beat their Old Firm rivals Rangers in the semis.

The Hoops had a rather successful previous match last weekend, putting seven past St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

Before that, Ange Postecoglou’s side faced off against Rangers, beating them at Ibrox and extending their lead at the top of the league table.

The two Glasgow clubs now meet again away from league duty to see which one will be in with a shout of securing the Scottish Cup.

On the chalkboard

One player that didn’t start in the 7-0 win against St. Johnstone but did end up playing a big part in the game was Liel Abada, who should be included in Postecoglou’s the starting XI this time around.

After replacing Giorgos Giakoumakis with 27 minutes on the clock, Abada saw the game out to the end after the Greek striker picked up an injury.

With 35 touches of the ball in total against the Saints, the 20-year-old ended up completing 22 of the 25 passes he attempted as well as having four shots at goal in total.

The winger even managed to get his name on the scoresheet by grabbing Celtic’s final goal of the match, giving the Hoops’ goal difference what could prove to be an all-important boost.

Labelled as a “little superstar” by Nir Bitton and a “wonderful” player by Frank McAvennie, the Israel winger has been a deadly attacking force for the Bhoys all season.

Having scored 10 league goals in 32 league appearances, Abada is currently Celtic’s top scorer, proving that it didn’t take him long to settle into Scottish football after joining the Parkhead side last summer.

In addition to this, the £15k-per-week attacker has the fourth-highest number of shots at goal out of any player in the entire SPFL, including fellow Hoops attacker Kyogo Furuhashi, who has eight league goals to his name.

This shows how much of a threat he is going forward and what sort of problems he could cause Rangers.

With that in mind, it should very much be in Postecoglou’s thinking when putting his starting XI together to include Abada and unleash him against the Gers.

Twenty-two wickets fall on riveting day

Both teams were bowled out for under three-figures and there was more as Sri Lanka lost a couple of wickets in their second innings after securing a three-run lead

Almost eight years ago, India and New Zealand played out an absorbing series where teams struggled to survive a session, let alone a day. The opening day of the second unofficial Test between Sri Lanka A and Pakistan A was reminiscent of the events in that series where green-top pitches enabled bowlers to dominate their opponents in a manner rarely witnessed in the decade gone by. Both teams were bowled out for under three-figures and there was more as Sri Lanka lost a couple of wickets in their second innings after securing a three-run lead.Pakistan opted to field at the Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium in Hambantota, one of the venues for the 2011 World Cup. Pakistan would have hoped to put the hosts under pressure and did so with persistent strikes, allowing just three batsmen past double-figures. Opener Nadeera Nawla managed 28, surviving a horrid start where the first four wickets were lost for 14. Jeevan Mendis then batted fluently, scoring five boundaries in his knock of 40 but could only last so long against incisive spells from fast bowler Junaid Khan and medium pacer Hammad Azam, who was one of the main performers for Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup in Australia earlier in the year. The pair bagged four wickets each to skittle the hosts for 97 but their team was at the receiving end soon after.Again, there were two chief destroyers among the bowlers. Seamer Suranga Lakmal, who made his Sri Lanka debut this year, and offspinner Sachithra Senanayake combined to run through the Pakistan batting. Lakmal did the early damage, picking up the first three wickets with just 23 on the board before returning to dislodge Azam. Senanayake struck when the middle order was trying to revive the innings by gradually accumulating runs, but four wickets fell for ten runs at one stage to scupper any hopes of recovery. Senanayake finished with 6 for 19 and Pakistan slid to 94 all out.Just when it seemed Sri Lanka had got themselves out of the hole to emerge front-runners, Junaid struck again to increase his day’s tally to six by removing the openers in the second innings. On a day where 22 wickets fell, Sri Lanka led by 46 runs at the close with eight wickets in hand.
