Australia seek redemption under rain threat

Persistent rain in Goa could lead to a washout, making this the first time since the 1979-80 tour, and the short trip in 1996, that Australia will leave India without a single victory

The Preview by Sriram Veera23-Oct-2010Match FactsSunday, October 24, Margao
Start time 09:00 (03:30 GMT)Australia’s middle order will revolve around Michael Clarke and Callum Ferguson. Will rains allow Ferguson a game, though?•Associated Press

The Big Picture”My god I have never seen rain like this before,” John Hastings, the Australia allrounder, tweeted on Saturday afternoon. “Chances are slim.” He was right. It poured for five hours on Friday evening and rained again on Saturday morning. The forecast threatens more bad weather; if the game is washed out it would be the first time since the 1979-80 tour that Australia will leave India without having won a single game, including any tour matches. There was also a short tour in 1996 (one Test and one warm-up game) where Australia drew the tour game and lost the Test.If the rains stay away and the drainage facility at the stadium, reportedly substandard, surprises to give us a game, Callum Ferguson will replace Michael Hussey. Ferguson hasn’t played a single Test match but they say he will be the captain in the future. Do such wild expectations terrify a young talent? “That would be the highest honour as a cricketer you could possibly get,” Ferguson said. “I just desperately want to get my baggy green first and see where we go from there.” Before that Test debut, though, he will strive to shine in one-dayers. He had impressed in the 25 ODIs he played before his career was halted by an injury sustained in the 2009 Champions Trophy final. He has to do it all over again now, returning after knee reconstruction surgery. Will Australia be tempted to give David Warner a game? Shaun Marsh was a bit scratchy in the last ODI and his technique was different from the serene version that was on show during the IPL in India. Back then, Marsh chose to remain as still as possible and play beside the line of the delivery, but he was seen shuffling all over in the previous match. Warner gives Australia an aggressive option at the top for barring Cameron White, who too can be a slow starter, the batting line-up is filled with batsmen whose strike-rates hover around the 75 mark. Time will tell whether the plan is to play Marsh along with the powerful Shane Watson during the World Cup. Visakhapatnam marked the promising debut of the 20-year old left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc. With his high-arm action he managed to extract some bounce on a life-less pitch and beat the bat of Yuvraj Singh a few times. The match also eased a couple of India’s concerns. Virat Kohli has now definitely moved ahead of Rohit Sharma in the pecking order, while R Ashwin put up a promising display with the ball. Kohli will hope he can get a couple more big knocks before Gautam Gambhir returns from injury. Ashwin impressed with his control and repertoire against two good players of spin – Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey. He will, however, want to improve on his poor fielding if he wants to firmly shut the door on his competitor Ravindra Jadeja.Form guide (most recent first)

Watch out for…Tim Paine struggled to adapt to the slowness of the Visakhapatnam track. He tried to force the pace but went too hard at the ball. In the Tests, though, he showed signs of being a batsman who waits for the ball to come on against the seamers, and doesn’t try to hide his bat behind the pads while playing spin. If he can return to that mode, Paine is likely to do well in the third ODI.You could sense that Yuvraj Singh was desperate to finish the game at Visakhapatnam. He revived the innings with a calm approach and looked to be in complete control. He didn’t let the pressure of the high asking rate to get to him and continued to steady the chase in Kohli’s company. His end, though, revealed the inner turmoil. He scored six runs off his last 18 deliveries and was run-less for his final six. The pressure proved claustrophobic: when Shikhar Dhawan, runner for Kohli, refused a risky single, Yuvraj slogged at the next delivery and was bowled. This fascinating inner battle between the adrenaline-fuelled Yuvraj and the calm senior version has been a constant feature over the years. Which one will dominate in Goa?Team newsVinay Kumar leaked runs in the end after a steady start – he went for 31 runs in his first seven overs but bled 41 in his final two – and India will consider replacing him with Munaf Patel who was economical in the Sri Lanka tri-series.
India (probable): 1 M Vijay, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Saurabh Tiwary, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Vinay Kumar / Munaf Patel, 11 Ashish Nehra.Ferguson is certain to play, while Warner will hope to replace Marsh in the Australia side.Australia (probable): 1 Shaun Marsh / David Warner, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Callum Ferguson, 5 Cameron White, 6 Steven Smith, 7 James Hopes, 8 John Hastings, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Mitchell Starc.Pitch and conditionsThe rains have affected the pitch preparations. Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen believes it would play slow. “I’m not sure it has seen a lot of sunshine,” Nielsen said. They can roll a bit more tomorrow, if the sun comes out. The wicket may be a bit slow but it could be a good batting wicket.”Stats and trivia Shaun Marsh made his name in India during the IPL but hasn’t had a great time against India. His career batting average is 37.33 but it slips to 28.80 from five games against India. It’s not all gloom, though, as his only ODI ton came against them. Yuvraj Singh has picked up 84 ODI wickets at an average of 40.73 and an economy rate of 5.05 in his career. He has struggled against Australia, though. He has taken only six wickets at an average of 92.66. Yuvraj’s batting record against Australia is not the best either. He averages just 28.28 from 34 games as compared to his career average of 36.83. His captain MS Dhoni averages 40.58 (career average is 50.28) from 24 games against them, while his strike rate drops from 88.34 to 74.11.Quotes”I have never seen rain like this in India.. It does not look good for our game on Sunday.”

Bravo and Pollard set to play in Big Bash

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2010

Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard could risk missing out on a place in the West Indies Twenty20 team•Indian Premier League

West Indies allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are set to participate in the Big Bash, Australia’s domestic Twenty20 tournament, this summer after receiving No-Objection Certificates from the West Indies Cricket Board to represent Victoria and South Australia respectively. However, the two, along with Chris Gayle, who has been signed up by Western Australia, risk ruling themselves out of selection for the West Indies team in the Twenty20 format should they choose to go to Australia. The Big Bash clashes with the Caribbean T20 and, according to the WICB’s regulations, participation in regional competitions is mandatory for being considered for national selection in the corresponding format of the game. The WICB had initially expressed reluctance about issuing the NOCs.Bravo, Gayle and Pollard have opted out of the WICB’s central contracts but have reaffirmed their commitment to West Indies cricket. The three players are eligible for selection into the West Indies squad for the 2011 World Cup after having played in the WICB Cup, the regional one-day tournament, earlier this year. Pollard and Bravo played for Trinidad and Tobago, and Gayle captained Jamaica. The Big Bash runs from December 30 to February 5, while the Caribbean T20 takes place between January 9 and 24.

Spurs: Conte interested in Ward-Prowse

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring James Ward-Prowse to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Star, who claim that Spurs, alongside the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United, are tracking the Southampton central midfielder closely, ahead of a potential swoop for the 27-year-old at the end of the season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

However, the report goes on to state that any interested party would have to pay Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side a figure in the region of £60m in order to prise him away from St. Mary’s this summer – and even then, Saints may still not be willing to sell the England international.

He’d be a “machine” under Conte

Considering just how impressive Ward-Prowse has been for Southampton over the last few years, in addition to the fact that Conte is known to be looking to add some creativity to his central midfield options in north London ahead of 2022/23, it is easy to see why the 52-year-old would be keen on a deal for the Saints star this summer.

Indeed, over his 33 Premier League appearances this season, the £33.5m-rated talent has been in electric form for Hasenhuttl’s side, scoring nine goals, registering five assists and creating eight big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots and making 2.1 key passes per game.

The £100k-per-week midfielder has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.1 interceptions, 1.2 tackles, 43.2 passes, 1.8 long balls, 2.2 crosses and winning 2.8 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the 27-year-old dubbed a “machine” by his Southampton teammates average a breathtaking SofaScore match rating of 7.31, not only ranking him as Saints’ best performer in the league but also as the joint 14th-best player in the division as a whole.

Furthermore, the signing of Ward-Prowse would also immediately make Tottenham a much more dangerous proposition from free-kicks, with the 10-time capped international having scored 14 Premier League goals from dead balls, ranking him second – behind only David Beckham – in the top flight’s free-kick scoring charts.

This ability saw Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola – one of the managers thought to be keen on a move for the midfielder this summer – dub Ward-Prowse as the best set-piece taker in world football, with the Spaniard stating:

“He is the best taker I have ever seen, right now in the world. He is so good, maybe this quality of a football player. He’s a team player, great quality without the ball. Set pieces and corners is exceptional.”

As such, being a player who is deadly in the final third, creative and tough in the heart of midfield and possesses a lethal free-kick, it is clear to see why the Southampton sensation is a player Conte would love to add to his Spurs squad this summer.

However, with a great deal of interest in the 27-year-old, Fabio Paratici will certainly have his work cut out if he is to secure the £60m+ singing of the South Coast star, but it would undoubtedly be well worth the trouble for the Tottenham sporting director.

South Africa keyed up for summit clash

India are the number one ranked side in Test cricket, and a side with that label has always overcome South Africa on their own turf. South Africa must feel as though they have a real chance to turn that around this time.

Firdose Moonda14-Dec-2010

South Africa have never beaten a No 1 Test side at home. They would fancy their chances against India•AFP

Corrie van Zyl may look like a typical sportsman, always wrapped in waterproof tracksuit tops and shorts, but he isn’t. In fact, in his crisp pink shirt and dark jeans, van Zyl could easily have been mistaken for a movie star. Surprisingly, he was one of the best-dressed men at the welcome party for the Indian team on Monday night in Sandton, exposing his best quality: he simply isn’t really what you think he is.You may think the South Africa coach has sleepless nights about coming up against countryman Gary Kirsten, whose name is being bandied as a possible replacement for van Zyl after the World Cup, but he “isn’t too bothered by what Gary is doing”. You may think that he is slowly going grey about South Africa’s inability to take 20 wickets in the previous two Tests but he “thinks we bowled excellently on the final day” of the second Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. You may think that if he is at the helm of a series win against the number one side in Test cricket, he will opt to stay on as national coach, but van Zyl is so committed to the High Performance Programme in Pretoria that he has moved his family from Bloemfontein to the capital so that he can commit to the project. It means that the Test series against India will be the last one played under his watch, and although few are likely to remember it for that reason, it represents an important turning point for South African cricket. The Test team has dominated at home since readmission, winning 52 out of 92 matches and losing only 19. They’ve beaten almost everyone who has visited their shores. Almost.South Africa have only suffered five series losses at home after readmission – three of those were against Australia in the last decade, at a time when the baggy green was dominating world cricket. The 2002 series was dubbed the “Kings of Cricket” but South Africa were the complete antithesis of majestic as they crumbled to hefty defeats in the first two matches. The next was a 3-0 whitewash in 2006 and the third an embarrassing 2-1 loss that came just after South Africa had won their first series Down Under in 2009.The India they will face now don’t exactly hold the awe Australia did for such a long time, perhaps because of their dodgy record away from home, but the mantle they bring with them is the same. They are the No.1 side in Test cricket, and a side with that label has always overcome South Africa on their own turf. That territory is particularly important in this series because it is being talked about as the factor that may end up deciding it. South Africa have asked the groundsmen to prepare bouncy wickets, so that they can let their pace attack loose on Indian batsmen known to be uncomfortable against the short ball. Dale Steyn’s reputation needs no elaboration but the development of his partnership with Morne Morkel will be interesting to watch. The pair have become known as one the most feared in world cricket, but their true test will come against the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.Left-armer Lonwabo Tsotsobe looks certain to play the role of the third specialist seamer, particularly because of the variation he will bring to the side. Tsotsobe has played just two Tests, but showed promise in the one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE. This series presents him with a perfect opportunity to lay permanent claim to a spot in the Test XI and help smoothen the mini-transition period the bowling attack is going through. It may not be obvious but the look of South Africa’s pace attack is changing. It’s the first time in a decade that they embark on a home series without Makhaya Ntini, who retired from international cricket last month. South Africa are searching for a black African who can have the same impact on the cricketing landscape of this race-affected nation and it may seem, on the surface, that Tsotsobe is the ideal candidate to fill those shoes. With quotas a thing of the past and teams being picked on merit, if Tsotsobe does cement his place, it’s unlikely to be because of his skin colour, but it will help the administrators kill two birds with one stone. With all the anticipation surrounding the clash between South Africa’s bowlers and India’s batsmen, the flip side has been forgotten. South Africa have a formidable batting line-up, one that will have to contend with Indian bowlers who will be drooling at the sight of responsive pitches. While most of the line-up is settled, there are two important positions that will come under scrutiny: the opener and the No. 6 batsman. Alviro Petersen has had a healthy start to his Test career but will want to perform well enough in the series to silence whispers for Jacques Rudolph to be recalled. Ashwell Prince faces a more immediate threat. JP Duminy was left out of the twelve on Monday, but the pressure is on Prince to take ownership of his spot. While the spotlight will be on some individuals, the team as a whole will take centre stage. This series is being contested between the two best teams in Test cricket at the moment. South Africa have been involved in three such series in the past at home and come out second-best every time. They must feel as though they have a real chance to turn that around. van Zyl said the rankings don’t matter and he’s right. Even if India lose two of the Tests, they will still stay No. 1.The only thing at stake is the series itself. That’s the kind of thinking van Zyl likes. He doesn’t care that, barring a clean sweep, South Africa may be back at the top in his time in charge. He cares about beating this Indian team no matter where anybody is ranked. For some, that attitude may not make him seem like a man who can lead a team to topple the world’s best. That’s exactly why he is the best man for the job.
