After a patient, and at times innovative, performance by their bowlers, South Zone’s batsmen played as if they had already made plans for a celebration on Sunday, scoring at 7.52 an over and making sure they completed the win on the fourth day itself. The victory marks the first time South has lifted the Duleep Trophy since the 1995-96 season.North had stumbled from 230 for 3 to 317 all out, leaving South 178 to win and Robin Uthappa had no intention of waiting until the fifth day to complete the chase. Uthappa went berserk on a flat track, smashing fours and sixes to all parts of the ground. The contest between Ishant Sharma and Uthappa was one to watch, after the two had been involved in an altercation on the second day that had cost them both their match fee. Uthappa was the clear winner of the bout. He slapped Ishant for six in his first over, and then pulled him for four in his next.One sensed at this stage that Uthappa was looking to finish it on Saturday itself, and that was made clear in the next over, when Uthappa mauled a hapless Sumit Narwal for 19 runs. On a slow wicket that was providing no sideways movement, Narwal was treated like a gentle medium-pacer. Uthappa was lucky to have an edge carry over the slips for four, but the next three shots were all off the middle of the bat. He dismissed Narwal over mid-on for four, guided him over the slips for another boundary, and then pulled him over fine leg for his second six of the innings.The mayhem continued when Amit Mishra brought himself on, with Uthappa favouring the straight boundaries but mixing things up with a reverse sweep to the deep point fence. When Uthappa holed out to Narwal, skying one to long-off, he had scored 71 off 45 balls with three sixes, and South had already brought up their 100 with 14 overs bowled.Yashpal Singh dismissed Amit Verma in the next over, but there was little respite for North as Manish Pandey came in and played in typically aggressive fashion. Pandey smashed three sixes and two fours before falling to Yashpal Singh, but by then South needed just 12 runs to win. Abhinav Mukund had been relatively quiet while Uthappa was around, but opened up after his opening partner was dismissed. He finished the match with a six over long-on off Shikhar Dhawan. South had taken just 23.4 overs to reach North’s total.The target North set was never going to be enough, and they would have hoped to have got more after Mithun Manhas and Paras Dogra had put together 85 for the fourth wicket. Sreenath Aravind had switched to left-arm spin instead of his seamers, and got the crucial wicket of Manhas, for 79. Manhas got a leading edge and Pandey took the catch at cover. Dogra was soon to follow, this time to South’s regular left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, playing an unnecessary slog and holing out to cover.Yashpal Singh held one end up, but the wickets kept falling at the other end. Aravind got another with his left-arm spin – an arm ball deceiving Uday Kaul – and Abhimanyu Mithun wiped out the tail with the new ball.North were out for 317, and though the speed of South’s chase was unexpected, they were always favourites to win after dominating most of the match.

However, with the visitors picking just three main bowlers, his seven overs of medium pace which claimed Cameron White and David Hussey – Australia’s middle-order enforcers – ensured England never lost control of the game.”Obviously I’m in the team to get 100s,” he said. “I was very happy to do that and set up a very good total, one we felt we could defend. When called upon to bowl it is always nice to contribute as well. I know how cricket can be, it can be a nice game and it can be a horrible game sometimes.”Trott hit an unbeaten 84 in the previous game at the SCG as England limped to 214 and there was some criticism that he didn’t try to force the pace towards the end of the innings. Paul Collingwood’s retirement from the five-day game means England will need a new part-time bowler come their next Test series and Trott wants to develop. “I’ve had a chat with David Saker and we’re going to work hard at that,” he said. “If I could bowl like Colly has in this tour then definitely I can help the side.”Michael Clarke, who would like to be able to play a similar anchor role with the bat for Australia but can’t break his form slump, praised Trott’s innings and the way his team-mates allowed him to control the innings. “I think the earlier he gets in probably the better for him and the more it suits his game and allows him to play freely,” he said. “He’s in pretty good nick and he batted really well today. I thought he held the innings together really well, the other guys had the opportunity to play around him.”Although Australia closed the innings a mere 21 runs adrift, they were struggling from the moment Shane Watson was caught behind off Ajmal Shahzad. Watto is in a bit of a purple patch and batting really well and leading from the front,” Clarke said. “But we’ve had other guys; Brad Haddin batted really well the other night, Shaun Marsh a hundred a couple of games ago, David Hussey as well. I just think at the moment he’s batting really well, unfortunately he didn’t go on and get a big one which would have been nice tonight.”

Se Juan veterano sentiu isso, o goleiro Julio Cesar – que se aposenta no dia 21 neste mesmo palco – corroborou com esse sentimento ao ver a torcida do Flamengo. Pelo menos foi o que relatou Vinícius.

– O Júlio César depois do treino estava falando comigo: essa torcida é diferente mesmo. O pessoal podia estar na praia, com esse sol, mas veio aqui e fez essa linda festa – disse o garoto.

O jovem e o veterano estarão em campo nesta noite de quarta-feira, mesmo sem torcida. Com as lembranças do que aconteceu no Maracanã, o Flamengo tem tudo para vencer o Santa Fe, com a força dos torcedores que estarão em casa com boas vibrações.

Volante de origem, Mantuan tem sido lapidado desde o começo da temporada para ser o substituto imediato na lateral direita. Léo Príncipe foi liberado pelo Timão para procurar outro clube e não foi inscrito no Paulistão nem na Libertadores, mas segue a rotina de treinos com os companheiros no CT Joaquim Grava.

Mantuan fará apenas seu nono jogo pelo Corinthians e já recebeu críticas de parte da torcida em seu perfil no Instagram. Isso porque na partida contra o Atlético-MG, no último domingo, ele preferiu tentar proteger e foi “atropelado” por Róger Guedes, que marcou o gol da vitória aos 41 minutos do primeiro tempo.

Outra atuação contestada foi contra o São Paulo, na ida da semifinal do Paulistão, quando Mantuan errou na saída de bola no lance que originou o gol do rival. Esses erros, porém, são vistos com naturalidade pelo técnico Fábio Carille, que passou confiança a seu pupilo.

– O substituto natural do Fagner é Mantuan, e ele tem que jogar, senão nunca vamos criar o jogador. Vão existir erros. Se queremos trabalhar com formação, temos que lidar com isso – disse Carille, após a partida do último domingo.

Ele tem o total apoio da equipe e da comissão. Apesar de jovem, já é bastante rodado, tem muitos anos de Corinthians, tenho certeza de que vai fazer um grande jogo – analisou Gabriel.
