Joyce and Arif deny Lancashire victory

Ed Joyce and Naved Arif both scored centuries as Sussex batted through the final day to save their County Championship Division One game with Lancashire at Hove

29-Apr-2011
ScorecardEd Joyce and Naved Arif both scored centuries as Sussex batted through the final day to save their County Championship Division One game with Lancashire at Hove.Opener Joyce batted for 98 overs for his 140 runs but when he was eighth out on the stroke of tea Sussex only led by 66.Amjad Khan fell for the addition of just three more runs but Pakistan-born Arif, who is English qualified because of his Danish wife, made a maiden century in only his second Championship game, adding an unbeaten 90 for the last wicket with Monty Panesar. There were 10 overs left when the players shook hands after Arif, 29, had gone to his hundred by sweeping Steven Croft for four. Sussex closed on 455 for 9, a lead of 155.Lancashire’s hopes of a claiming their third successive win were not helped when former England seamer Sajid Mahmood had to be taken out of the attack for bowling his second beamer of the innings at Joyce just after Lancashire had taken the second new ball. With skipper Glen Chapple struggling because of a sore ankle and forced to cut his run-up, Lancashire lacked penetration on a flat pitch which offered very little for the bowlers apart from some slow turn for left-arm spinner Gary Keedy, who bowled 55 overs and took four wickets but conceded 200 runs. The visitors had looked on course when they took four wickets in seven overs at the start of the day. Having added 169 for the first wicket with Joyce, Chris Nash was bowled by Chapple’s inswinger and three balls later Luke Wells edged to slip.Murray Goodwin, who had made 113 in the first innings, was deceived in the flight as he came down the pitch to Keedy, while Ben Brown was beaten by Stephen Moore’s throw from cover after Joyce rightly sent him back when he looked for a single to get off the mark.Mahmood’s inswinger accounted for Luke Wright but Joyce found two useful allies during the afternoon session to lead the lower-order resistance. He added 43 in 15 overs with Andrew Hodd and 56 in 10 with Rana Naved, whose boisterous 32 included two sixes.Joyce, who reached the 25th hundred of his career with a boundary off Mahmood, was dropped on 104 by Peter Horton at slip and had moved onto 140 when occasional off-spinner Croft got a delivery to turn and bounce and Joyce edged to slip. The Irishman had batted for nearly six-and-a-half hours, faced 256 balls and hit 13 fours and a six.His departure seemed to signal the end of Sussex’s resistance and Arif was on 32 when he was joined by Panesar. But mixing watchful defence with some bold hitting against the spinners, Arif dominated a last-wicket alliance of 90 in 24 overs – hitting four sixes over the short pavilion-side boundary and eight fours as he made exactly a hundred off 130 balls.

Parnell makes early impression for Sussex

Yorkshire are heading for a third successive defeat in the County Championship after they were forced to follow on by Sussex on the third day of the Division One match at Hove

31-May-2011
ScorecardYorkshire are heading for a third successive defeat in the County Championship after they were forced to follow on by Sussex on the third day of the Division One match at Hove. The visitors were dismissed for 273, a total which would have been worse but for some stubborn resistance from opener Joe Root – who top scored with 70 – and a career-best 53 by number 10 Steve Patterson. As it was, Yorkshire still conceded a first innings deficit of 275 and in 13 overs before stumps they lost opener Joe Sayers for a duck and Root to the final ball of the day before closing on 29 for two, still 246 behind. On an easy-paced pitch it is still possible that Yorkshire can save the game by batting through the final day, just as Sussex did earlier in the season when they followed on against leaders Lancashire. But they will need more of their batsmen to show the same fortitude as 20-year-old Root, who resisted for four-and-a-half hours before he was seventh out – one of three first-innings victims for left-armer Wayne Parnell.Parnell was not the only South African to enjoy a successful Sussex debut. All-rounder Kirk Wernars – a 20-year-old from Cape Town who qualifies for county cricket because he holds a Dutch passport – picked up two wickets for 13 runs from 8.5 overs of medium pace, five of which were maidens.A miserable day for the recalled Sayers began with the second ball of the day from Amjad Khan which he edged low to Ed Joyce at second slip. Khan then bowled Anthony McGrath via an inside edge to take his 300th first-class wicket and Yorkshire had lost five wickets by lunch as skipper Andrew Gale played on to Parnell, James Anyon had Johnny Bairstow caught off the splice with his fourth delivery and Monty Panesar turned a delivery out of the rough to pin left-hander Gary Ballance.Root organised some spirited lower order resistance, adding 65 with Adil Rashid for the sixth wicket before Rashid padded up to a straight ball to give Wernars a wicket with his 17th ball in county cricket.Root was unseated by a spearing leg-stump yorker from Parnell, having faced 195 deliveries and hit 10 fours, and when Ryan Sidebottom carelessly wafted his third ball to slip Yorkshire were 198 for eight and in dire trouble.Patterson struggled to cope when the Sussex attack pitched short but he grew in confidence, adding 75 for the ninth wicket with Ajmal Shahzad, and passing his previous best of 46 made in the 2006 Roses match at Old Trafford. He struck 10 fours and was last out when Parnell plucked out his off-stump, Shahzad having holed out to deep square-leg in the previous over.It got worse for Yorkshire when they went in again. Sayers lasted two balls before again edging to second slip to give Parnell his fourth wicket of the day, before Chris Nash’s off-break turned out of the rough and Root was leg before wicket playing back.

Stuart the new coach of New South Wales

Anthony Stuart, the former Australian fast bowler, has been appointed coach of the New South Wales state team, after Matthew Mott departed from the role at the end of the summer. Other applicants for the role included Mott’s predecessor Trevor Bayliss, who enjoyed a successful stint as coach of Sri Lanka before choosing to return home to Australia following the World Cup.”I am extremely honoured to get the opportunity to coach the Blues,” said Stuart, 41. “There is an excellent blend of experience and young talent within the squad and I look forward to working with an exciting group of players that are well placed to compete in the domestic competitions.”Stuart shone brightly but briefly in his first-class and international careers, claiming a hat-trick against Pakistan at the MCG in 1997 in what turned out to be his final ODI appearance, before going on to a lengthy coaching apprenticeship. Most recently he has worked in New Zealand as the coach of Wellington, also presiding over the New Zealand A side in that time.Wellington’s results over the five-year period were decidedly mixed, not harvesting a single trophy, and Stuart was removed from the post in February. However, one of his players at Wellington, Iain O’Brien, said Stuart was a thoroughly professional coach who lost a lot of his best players to New Zealand duties.”He is the most organised, most meticulous in preparation of any coach I’ve had,” O’Brien told ESPNcricinfo. “He had a tough old time of it in Wellington, lost a lot of players to NZ duty at times and that left the stocks pretty light. During Stuey’s time Andy McKay and Luke Woodcock debuted for NZ, not all coaches can say they’ve worked and developed players into internationals.”Stuart also impressed during the interview process for a job that will focus on the Blues’ Sheffield Shield and domestic limited-overs teams. There is a slight chance that Stuart will also be called on to coach one of the two NSW Twenty20 teams in next summer’s expanded Big Bash League.David Gilbert, the chief executive of Cricket NSW, said Stuart’s time in New Zealand had “served him well”.”His passion, determination and disciplined approach to coaching will greatly benefit NSW,” Gilbert said. “Further, his acute knowledge of Cricket NSW’s programs, and his intense desire for success, made him the ideal person to lead our young and talented squad.”

O cara do Morumbi: Diego Souza decide San-São e complica Peixe

England's women extend dominance

Claire Taylor roared back into form with a boundary-laden 66 to carry England to 134 before a professional team performance with the ball restricted India to 88 for 8

Claire Taylor roared back into form with a boundary-laden 66 to carry England to 134 before a professional team performance with the ball restricted India to 88 for 8 and secured a dominant 46-run win at Taunton. England were already assured of a place in the final of the NatWest Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series but there was no let-up in intensity from them and India never threatened to chase down a modest total.England had looked like getting a lot more than their 134 when Taylor and Danielle Wyatt combined in a rapid third-wicket stand of 42 that rattled along at better than eight an over and ensured England took advantage of the fielding restrictions despite the early departures of captain Charlotte Edwards and Laura Marsh, who edged the first ball she faced through to wicketkeeper Anagha Deshpande.Wyatt collected four sweetly-timed boundaries, the pick of which was a lofted inside-out drive over extra cover off seamer Snehal Pradhan, before she chipped a return catch back to Amita Sharma. Sharma was on a hat-trick when she found the edge of Lydia Greenway’s bat first ball, but Claire Taylor denied her the landmark and took England past 100 in allrounder Arran Brindle’s company. In the midst of their 55-run stand – the highest of the match – England looked set to reach at least 160, but Indian captain Jhulan Goswami took it upon herself to claw her team back into the game, bowling Taylor and adding two further wickets as England were bowled out with a ball to spare.India’s chase never got going, however, and fast bowler Katherine Brunt recovered from the disappointment of seeing a catch dropped by wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor to strike the first blow by dismissing Deshpande for a 15-ball 5. India managed just one boundary in the first six overs, a slogged four from Neha Tanwar that brought her her first runs in Twenty20 internationals. After Mithali Raj was run out, England’s spinners took control, with Wyatt completing a good all-round performance with two wickets and Holly Colvin and Danielle Hazell contributing one apiece.India knew they couldn’t make the final of this tournament going into this game, and their disappointment was reflected in their lacklustre performance. England, on the other hand, were already assured of a place and will go into their match against Australia on Monday as the form team.”We could have won,” said a disappointed Goswami. “The wicket and weather was good. The batting let us down totally in the competition. We have not been able to score 100 consistently in the tournament. We are not playing to our potential. We need to definitely change as we are working very hard to sort our problems out with our coaches. We know what mistakes we are making and are working hard to rectify it as well.”We need to play our natural game and not take undue pressure. The bottom line is to enjoy the game. The problem seems to be a mental one more than anything else. We are trying to be over aggressive and putting ourselves under pressure. Bowling and fielding are doing well. But we need to make a conscious effort to individually raise our game.”
