Lehmann defends absence of specialist spin coach

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has defended the ongoing absence of a former bowler as a specialist spin coach in the Australian setup despite the fact that Ashton Agar and Nathan Lyon are still learning their trade

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has defended the ongoing absence of a former bowler as a specialist spin coach in the Australian setup despite the fact that Ashton Agar and Nathan Lyon are still learning their trade. Australia travel to Manchester on Monday and what they see from the Old Trafford pitch will go a long way to determine whether both Lyon and Agar play, on a surface on which England may well use Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar in tandem. But the Australian pair collectively managed only 2 for 165 in their tour match against Sussex, although both Agar and Lyon also had catches put down that would have increased their wickets tally. Lyon was too predictable early in the match and was taken to by Rory Hamilton-Brown, but he improved his drift and dip later in the game, while Agar found a few edges against the right-handed batsmen but did little to suggest any major improvements had been made.Agar, 19, was playing only his 13th first-class match since making his debut in January and Lyon, 25, is still learning after just over two years on the first-class scene. But despite the large number of off-field staff employed by Cricket Australia on tours, there has been no specialist spin coach outside of Steve Rixon, the fielding mentor, who also doubles as a spin coach and talks the bowlers through things like how to bowl to certain fields. However, while the Australians played in Hove, Rixon was in London working with the batsmen Shane Watson and Chris Rogers, leaving Agar and Lyon in the hands of Lehmann and bowling coach Ali de Winter, a former seamer. Lehmann said coaching spin at Test level was as much about working on plans as anything technical.”We obviously call on Warnie a bit,” Lehmann said. “We’d be mad not to use Shane Warne and talk spin bowling to him. It’s not so much technical with him, it’s more about the mental side of it, the fields you want for certain players. We use everyone. We don’t want too many views. We want to keep it channelled for a young kid. He [Agar] is only 19 but he goes well.”Steve Rixon is our specialist spin coach and fielding coach so he does that. Working with him on how to get blokes out is pretty much my domain as head coach. I know how you’re going to get all the England players out. That’s an easy one. We’ve just got to execute our plans for it, and I think we’ve done that pretty well over a period of time.”Ashton probably not so much last Test match but I’m really confident with our plans. We’d be mad to pick him [Agar] if we didn’t think he was technically up to it. He’s 19, I’d hope he has plenty of room for improvement, the same as Nathan, they’re both young kids, although Nathan’s played a lot more. They’ve both got room for improvement.”Lyon was overlooked for the first two Tests as Australia went with Agar instead and while Agar made headlines for his 98 in the first Test at Trent Bridge, his bowling has been less noteworthy. He has created more chances than his two wickets at 124.00 would indicate, but has been nowhere near as threatening as Lyon has for large chunks of his Test career, which has brought him 76 victims at 33.18.”Would we have this discussion if he’d ended up with three or four at Notts?” Lehmann said of Agar. “Maybe not. But that wasn’t meant to be. Things go your way and some things don’t. I was impressed with the way he bowled at Notts. I thought he bowled quite well. He had a problem with his hip in the second Test and struggled through that. But he knows he didn’t bowl well enough, not the standard we’re after so he needs to get it right pretty quickly, we know that.”You would like more wickets [against Sussex]. I would have hoped to bowl them out under 300 so that was probably the only thing. But having said that it didn’t spin too much. Monty got a couple of wickets but didn’t get any [in the second innings] so it’s not a great track for spin, whereas Old Trafford, I think, it will spin. We need him to perform.”While a dual spin attack is a possibility if the pitch suits it, Australia also have questions over the make-up of their batting order after being bowled out cheaply in both innings at Lord’s. David Warner will rejoin the squad after scoring 193 for Australia A against South Africa A in Pretoria, an innings of greater note than any played by the Australian batsmen in Sussex, although Lehmann said that would not guarantee him a place in the side.”He got 193 and played well, did exactly what we wanted him to do,” Lehmann said. “We want blokes to make hundreds and he’s ticked that box. Again, we’ll have to look at the wicket and what we come up with in the top six. He could bat anywhere from one to six.”Lehmann also defended the decision to leave Rogers and Watson in London to work in the nets rather than playing in Hove, and said he was more keen for the other members of the squad to have a hit in match conditions. Phillip Hughes and Ed Cowan made half-centuries in the first innings against Sussex without going on to triple figures, and Lehmann said it was disappointing that they had not taken the opportunity.”I would have liked them both to make big hundreds,” he said. “When you get in that scenario you should be making big hundreds but they know that, we spoke about that. But they played well and got through some tough times.”Australia will train at Old Trafford on Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of the third Test, which they must win to keep the series alive.

Corinthians inscreve meia Régis no Paulistão e deixa Sergio Díaz fora

MatériaMais Notícias

O Corinthians inscreveu o meia Régis no Campeonato Paulista nesta sexta-feira.

Yorks held up by diligent Brown

Ben Brown’s unbeaten 78 held up Yorkshire after the visiting seam attack had made good use of winning the tossing and bowling first

There was a curious atmosphere of immediacy and timelessness at Hove on the first day of this game: immediacy because Yorkshire now lie second in the Division One table and clearly need a win this week; timelessness because this is the penultimate first-class match of the season at this ground and the pull of Hove’s rich history and famously varied architecture is made even more powerful by the arrival of autumn. The contrast remained in one’s mind throughout the day. Yorkshire’s attack mastered the conditions in the late morning and one was reminded that a brisk, skittish breeze and the ground’s slope to the sea were problems over which bowlers like Maurice Tate and Tony Buss also triumphed. Their successes, though, did not take Sussex to the title; that moment in time did not arrive until 2003. Yorkshire, meanwhile, had won their first County Championship in 1893 and hope to celebrate their sesquicentennial anniversary with their 31st outright crown.By close of play, Andrew Gale’s men had made good progress towards winning this game. An attack which, in professional parlance, is “always at you” had limited Sussex to 276 for 9, a very decent effort on a flat pitch. Weather permitting, Yorkshire’s powerful batting line-up will hope to build a significant first-innings lead on the next two days of this game. The main obstacle towards Yorkshire claiming an even more decisive advantage came in the shape of Ben Brown, whose sparkling 93 had been a highlight of his side’s innings win at Headingley back in April. Here, Brown combined with Steve Magoffin to add 74 runs for the eighth wicket, as Adam Lyth’s failure to take a straightforward slip catch off Steve Patterson’s bowling when the Sussex wicketkeeper-batsman had 14 to his name assumed greater importance with every over that passed. After a first hour of play in which the conditions had caused Gale’s attack to struggle, Yorkshire ended the morning session in a dominant position with Sussex on 117 for 5. That was remarkable given that the home side were 58 for 1 after 14.3 overs with both Chris Nash and Michael Yardy going well. But Liam Plunkett, the third bowler to be tried from the troublesome Sea End in the first hour, produced the ball of the day to account for Nash, who could be forgiven for not being able to cope with the movement and lift the former Durham seamer generated. From that point on Sussex’s batsmen contributed a little to their side’s demise, Yardy chopping a ball from Plunkett on to the stumps and Ed Joyce being bowled behind his legs by Sidebottom for just 3. Rory Hamilton-Brown, his attacking shots invariably more impressive than his defensive efforts, then whacked Kane Williamson’s gentle and deceptive offspin for two leg-side sixes before the last ball of the same over defeated him with oh-so-gentle turn.Conditions eased a little for bowling in the afternoon. The wind dropped, the atmosphere became a little heavier and the Yorkshire attack bowled rather straighter. Patterson tore out Matt Prior’s off pole two overs after the resumption, with a ball that defeated what looked a copybook forward defensive shot. Sussex debutant Ashar Zaidi, a well-travelled league professional who scored 192 not out and took six wickets for Sussex’s second team against Durham just last week, batted coolly, albeit for just 17, before being pinned on the crease by Sidebottom. That left the home side on 164 for 7 but Lyth’s lapse at slip and the good sense shown by Brown and Magoffin shifted the balance of the day quite markedly, as the weather closed in and September’s less-benevolent aspect enveloped the ground. Brown looked a good player in making 78 not out while Magoffin exhibited admirable good sense: if the ball was pitched up, he drove it; if it was short, he kept it out.Only when the Australian seamer chased a wide-ish one from Sidebottom two overs after tea did his technique let him down. By then, though, he had made 25 and helped to change the complexion of the day’s cricket. The last significant action took place in gathering gloom, when James Anyon was bowled by Williamson. Mark Benson and Steve O’Shaughnessy took the players off soon afterwards. We shall see how good Sussex’s eventual total is over the next couple of days, hoping the forecast rain escapes this tiny portion of the coast. For it can be on such matters of meteorology that titles are decided.

ECB move May Test matches

The ECB has ditched the May Test matches which have been a part of the English summer since 2000 by shifting the two-match series against Sri Lanka next year to June with the T20 and ODIs being played beforehand

The ECB has ditched the May Test matches which have been a part of the English summer since 2000 by shifting the two-match series against Sri Lanka next year to June with the T20 and ODIs being played beforehand.Playing Sri Lanka’s Tests in mid-June should help avoid problems of clashing with the IPL, which has created availability issues with some players not arriving until shortly before the first Test, and also opens up the chance for England players such as Kevin Pietersen to have a longer stint at the tournament. This would have been a tougher proposition had England been obliged to play three Tests, as originally suggested by the Future Tours Programme. However, as Sri Lanka Cricket trimmed the home series against England to two Tests, in order to have Sri Lanka players available for the entire 2012 IPL, the ECB is no longer bound to provide more than two Tests on the reciprocal tour.Last time Sri Lanka visited, in 2011, five players including Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene missed one of the two warm-up matches due to IPL commitments and the same situation occurred with New Zealand this year when Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor arrived late.Sri Lanka in England 2014

Only T20 – May 20, The Oval
1st ODI – May 22, The Oval
2nd ODI – May 25, Durham
3rd ODI – May 28, Old Trafford
4th ODI – May 31, Lord’s
5th ODI – June 3, Edgbaston
1st Test – June 12-16, Lord’s
2nd Test – June 20-24, Headingley

The IPL will start later next year, due to the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, but is likely to be concluded by early June although it means that the Twenty20 and ODI series of Sri Lanka’s visit will face the scheduling clash and subsequent player availability issues. However, if this type of schedule is maintained in future years it may open up a clear window for the IPL.For next year it means England will have a run of seven Tests in little more than two months next summer with the five-match series against India beginning in early July.Touring teams have struggled to adapt to conditions for May Test matches in England; the only team to win a Test in May (and even that began on May 31) was Pakistan in 2001. England have only lost one other match in their early-season Test series, first introduced against Zimbabwe in 2000, when Sri Lanka levelled the 2006 series at Trent Bridge.0:00

Test team should build around Chanderpaul – Gibbs

Former West Indies offspinner, Lance Gibbs, believes the current West Indies team need to build around their most experienced player, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, if they are to continue to achieve success at the Test level

Former West Indies offspinner, Lance Gibbs, believes that the West Indies need to build their current team around Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the West Indies batsman, if Test success is to come into the frame once more, as November’s India tour looms.Gibbs indicated that Chanderpaul’s experience and talent are the right ingredients to nourish younger batsmen such as Kirk Edwards and Darren Bravo in the subcontinent. “Chanderpaul is one of our premier batsmen – the premier [one] actually,” Gibbs said. “We need to bat around him and mature these inexperienced players in his presence. That maturity is not there right now but, as with many teams, we all have our ups and downs, but now we need to turn that proverbial corner which everyone always speaks of, every time we do well.”He backed Darren Sammy as Test skipper but noted that for Dwayne Bravo to continue the strides of West Indies’ T20 world title last year, and in hopes of improving their results in the 50-over game, Bravo needs to improve as limited-overs skipper. “Dwayne tries to do too much. He needs to focus on certain areas and not try to do so much. We saw his death bowling exposed in the CPL, but I have faith in him as much as I know Sammy will deliver in India. The squad’s a good mix. Hungry and young too.”With the likes of Kirk Edwards and Narsingh Deonarine impressing during the present A team tour in India, Gibbs reiterated that there was a good blend of youth and experience in the Sammy-led 15-man squad, which also faces New Zealand in a hectic run-in to end 2013.”We haven’t played Tests in a while but the state of our cricket and Test team isn’t too bad. Zimbabwe and Bangladesh were good to practice against in the last year, and we did improve. Each nation goes through these motions in the sport and we as a team need to move from strength to strength. Let’s play good cricket and get the fundamentals right. You can see a team like England and say they’re the best, but it’s only in the past few years they’ve stepped up so I’m confident in the Windies.”When asked if T20 cricket had hampered the progress and development of the region’s youngsters, and even star players such as Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, he said that players should play all disciplines. With the aforementioned players still to make Test waves in recent months, Gibbs added that he didn’t think the lore of Tests or romance of ODI cricket had dissipated. “It’s an evolution of the game. Test cricket is the ultimate, but we have to roll with the times for the sake of the crowds. T20 has given exciting cricket as seen in the IPL and CPL, but remember, Test cricket stands on its own.””We all start off in the Caribbean playing 10, 20 or 40-overs, then we develop our 50-over game, our county cricket and as first-class players. Things change and we can’t look back, only forward. Players make a living from this now and back in the day, footballers, cricketers, boxers and such were barely making money but now, all kinds of sports are lucrative once you have the talent.”He indicated that once the talismans of the sport gave back to the game, things would bode well. He referenced the CPL’s youngsters rubbing shoulders with various West Indies and international stars, which acted as a nursery to their learning and growth earlier this year. “CPL had stars from Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand come over so I think we’re well-prepped for what’s to come ahead.”West Indies will play two Tests and three ODIs, with the first Test match set to start on November 6.
