O Avaí ainda busca a primeira vitória no Campeonato Brasileiro.

'Chigumbura run-out the turning point' – Captains

The dismissal of Elton Chigumbura in the 42nd over was the turning point in the second ODI in Chittagong, both the captains agreed

Elton Chigumbura was undone by a direct hit in the 42nd over•BCB

The dismissal of Elton Chigumbura in the 42nd over was the turning point in the second ODI in Chittagong, both the captains – Mashrafe Mortaza and Chigumbura – agreed. The Zimbabwe captain was run-out just inches short of his crease after Sabbir Rahman hit the stumps direct from mid-off.That moment sealed the game for Bangladesh as they went on to win by 68 runs. Till Chigumbura’s dismissal, Zimbabwe had a chance. Chigumbura had made 38 off 31 balls with five boundaries, three of which came off a Mashrafe over in the batting Powerplay. But then Zimbabwe lost their last three wickets in the 45th over to Arafat Sunny and the chase ending abruptly.”I thought we were still in the game,” Chigumbura said. “I thought I could bat myself to chase that score. It was going to be a special last five overs, an exciting game. I think 280 in the first game was also chaseable but we just made the same mistake once again in this game which is losing too many wickets.””There are three more games left and a lot can change. Just one game can change everything. I am sure if we win the next game, Bangladesh will be under very much pressure.”Mashrafe, while agreeing that Sabbir’s run out of Chigumbura mattered a lot, added that Mominul Haque’s unbeaten 33 off 23 balls was vital for Bangladesh to post a decent total. When he had arrived at the crease at No. 7, Bangladesh had badly slipped from 158 for no loss to 204 for 5. It soon became 204 for 6 and 225 for 7 but Mominul went after the bowling, hitting three boundaries towards the end.”I thought Chigumbura’s run-out was crucial since he can strike hard from those situations. But I would say that Mominul’s innings in the end gave us the impetus to be where we needed to be. He played only 23 balls but it was a vital innings,” Mashrafe said.Mashrafe also explained the decision to send Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman and Mahmudullah ahead of Mominul as a pre-planned move, designed to push the scoring once Tamim and Anamul would provide a solid base. He said that perhaps some of the batsmen got confused with the situation as they often don’t walk into such a good position.”Our most in-form batsmen were Shakib and Mushfiqur,” he said. “We wanted them to play the most number of overs. The openers batted for 33 overs today, so we wanted to send our best batsmen at the stage. It was planned before the game that once the openers give us a good start, we would send them ahead. One part of that plan was successful.”We started off very well. But I think some of the batsmen got a bit confused,” he said. “They usually don’t bat in these situations. Maybe they didn’t understand what to do. The collapse didn’t let us build a big score. I think we can improve in that area.”Chigumbura was glad that his bowlers and fielders stood up to the challenge after being down 1-0 in the series. Mire too, who made his maiden half-century in only his second game, impressed the captain.”I think there were few parts where the bowlers bowled brilliant,” Chigumbura said. “The fielders provided the energy and it was very enthusiastic. But we didn’t manage to do the same thing with the bat.”It is always good to see one of your youngsters making some runs and increasing confidence especially in his second game,” he said. “So hopefully he can carry what he did today in the rest of the series.”

Lessons of Hughes' life unforgettable in death

It was a large and varied crowd that turned out to pay tribute to Phillip Hughes in Macksville, with several eminent names thrown in, but the farewell was personal, fitting and a good reminder of the meaning of life

Daniel Brettig in Macksville03-Dec-2014It was Phillip Hughes’ sister Megan who spoke these words, but there was nary a soul in Macksville on Wednesday afternoon who did not feel the same way. From Trinidad to Sydney, from cricket to politics, from close family to far-flung friends, they had assembled for Hughes. Every last one wished they had come to see him bat.The sense of loss was palpable, but so too was one of gratitude. Hughes had shown many of them great lessons in life. In his death playing the game, the example of his life will endure, and in the service that farewelled him, there were plenty to call upon.Neither Macksville nor cricket has seen an event quite like it. Helicopters hovered overhead, a Test match-sized media contingent floated outside the Macksville High assembly hall, and buses conveyed a broad list of dignitaries and figureheads in addition to those who knew Hughes well. For a time it felt as if the rolling cavalcade of notables, including Brian Lara, Virat Kohli, Shane Warne and Australia’s prime minister Tony Abbott, would become too outsized for a gathering designed to celebrate Hughes’ rich life, not ogle over the freakish circumstances of his death. Apart from the 1000 mourners in the hall, many scores more sat on the school’s two ovals to watch on big screens. But the deeply moving words of his family and his friends ensured that Hughes was farewelled in an entirely fitting manner, belying the scale of the event. Personal, teary and insightful, they told the world still more about how Hughes had inspired, well before and well beyond the daring deeds he performed with the bat for his hometown, club, state and country in a career too short. From the eulogy delivered by his cousin Nino Ramunno, to personal letters by his siblings Megan and Jason and a tribute from his friend and cattle-business partner Corey Ireland, the full picture of Hughes emerged. Michael Clarke’s tribute was mournful and emotional but also hopeful, that Hughes would be not only remembered but remain present in the thoughts, words and actions of all cricketers.Ramunno’s recollections said much about Hughes’ cheekiness, his preference for “street smart” over “book smart”, and his happenstance introduction to cricket via Jason, who challenged him to play as a fill-in one day or risk the quintessential sibling jibe of “wuss”. Twenty-five runs on debut were not bad for a tailender, and there would soon be plenty more, even as Ramunno sat on his grade debut through the sorts of questions often asked of Hughes, like “geez he’s small” and “has he got the power to hit the ball off the square”.’Cricket’s heart has been pierced by pain but it will never stop beating’•Getty Images

But Hughes’ progress could be measured by the words of Jason, who spoke of his younger brother in ways commonly reserved for an older one. Having given up on ever getting to bat first, Jason bowled to Phillip for hours, covered for him when he once ran away from home for three days to the New South Wales central coast, and was eventually inspired to follow when the younger brother trekked more permanently to Sydney for cricket. They enjoyed a final grade stand together for Western Suburbs – a partnership of 210 against Mosman that drove Jason to follow up by plucking 5 for 19.Ireland showed that there was far more to Hughes’ life than cricket. Not a follower of the game, he admitted to being clueless when a crowd surrounded the then Test opener and his father Greg when they perused Ireland’s collection of cattle at a Royal Easter Show. This comic beginning grew into a friendship that offered one of the more poignant insights of the day. Hughes was forever asking Ireland and his wife about how they met, when they married and how much later they had children. There was more than cricket and cattle in his future.Clarke’s words were always likely to be tinged with sobs, and his lasting sense of disbelief was writ large across an affecting address. Resting a hand on his coffin as he went up to speak, among Clarke’s first words were to express that widely held emotion: “I don’t know about you but I keep looking for him; I know it’s crazy, but I expect any minute to take a call from him or to see him around the corner.”When Clarke ventured out to the SCG on Thursday night following Hughes’ death, to the spot where he fell against New South Wales last Tuesday, he “swore” his friend was with him. Taking a leaf from Australian indigenous lore, Clarke said Hughes spirit had touched the turf, “and it will forever be sacred ground for me”. He suggested that Hughes had embodied the spirit of the game, and concluded with a message remembered from countless innings together with Hughes, when simple messages and reminders are so often best.”We must dig in, and get through to tea. And we must play on. Rest in peace my little brother, I’ll see you out in the middle.”A video produced by Cricket Australia’s Adam Goldfinch then brought Hughes very much to life, through visions of him training or offering the sort of infectious enthusiasm he was known for. He could joke at himself, and he always intended to return to Macksville in the end. At this, Mitchell Johnson was far from the only one to wipe away tears. With a few words from Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland, who declared “cricket’s heart has been pierced by pain but it will never stop beating”, the funeral drew to a close, Hughes taken from the room on the shoulders of men including his father Greg and his captain Clarke. The procession that followed on through the heart of Macksville made a stirring sight. No witness will forget it, nor will they forget Hughes.

England seek jungle reinvigoration

In Hambantota, they say funny things can happen. And England need something unexpected to happen to their ODI cricket, some jungle juju to reinvigorate a stumbling side

Alan Gardner02-Dec-2014In Hambantota, they say funny things can happen. You might include the creation of a 35,000-seater stadium out in Sri Lanka’s southern boondocks among them. When it comes to far-flung places, the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium is further flung than most, a rural vanity project named after the president and dropped into the forest, the calls of wild animals echoing beyond the boundary.Pressure is mounting on Alastair Cook•Getty Images

England need something unexpected to happen to their ODI cricket, some jungle juju to reinvigorate a stumbling side. They have not played at this ground before, so perhaps that can help to provide a freshness to their approach – although the heavy downpour that wiped out their pre-match practice for the second time in a row did not bode well for a change in fortune. It would be unwise to imagine that whatever is in the local air will inspire England to toss their plans into the campfire and include, say, Alex Hales and James Taylor in the side. At least not yet. The underperformance of the senior batsmen is the most obvious cause for concern as Alastair Cook bids to end a run of seven defeats in the last eight ODIs but past experience suggests they will continue to back players such as Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan to produce. The pressure on Cook has been almost unrelenting over the past 12 months, aside from the three-Test bounce against India over the summer. It is easy to forget that he is England’s most successful one-day captain, with a win-loss record to stand alongside his most recent predecessors – better than Andrew Strauss and Nasser Hussain, slightly worse than Michael Vaughan. And, as Steven Finn said before the third ODI, Cook should not have to carry the can on his own.World devastated by Hughes death – Finn

Steven Finn said that the cricket world had been “devastated” by the death of Phillip Hughes. Finn played alongside Hughes at Middlesex in 2009, when they were both 20-year-olds, and described him as “a great man”.
“I got to know him relatively well,” Finn said. “It is a very very sad tragedy that has happened and I don’t think there is a cricketer in the world who hasn’t shed a tear for Phillip over the last week.
“I only played with him for six weeks to two months at Middlesex and played against him a fair amount for Australia, but he was an amazing guy. He is going to be sorely missed by lots of people because he touched so many and I know he did to everyone at Middlesex. Everyone has been in a real bad place about what happened and everyone is really sad about it, particularly myself.”
England’s third ODI with Sri Lanka will be played on Wednesday, coinciding with Hughes’ funeral in Australia. The ECB is expected to send a representative to a later memorial service in Sydney and Finn said the players would get on with the game and pay their respects when they could.
“I’d imagine anyone who is playing cricket anywhere around the world who had come across Hughesy in any shape or form is still trying to come to terms with it,” he said. “It still feels very surreal what has happened and the funeral is on Wednesday and everyone will step aside and think about him and pay their respects in their own way. I know everyone in the England dressing room will do. And it is important we do that because we’ve lost a great man.”

“Look, we’ve had two games of cricket over here and we’ve had two innings and Alastair is not the only one who has struggled for form in the team,” Finn said. “The pressure on him is a little unjust at the moment. We’ve still got five more games of cricket to go out here. Everyone in the dressing room fully supports him. He is an incredibly impressive man to be leading us and we are most definitely behind him.”It is as much Cook’s stubbornness – his “inner steel” – that has made him a lightning rod for criticism. While doubts about his suitability as a one-day opener will persist until he produces a significant score – it is nearly two-and-a-half years since his last century – it is also true that very few of his players are taking matches into their own hands. Even then, as with the efforts of Moeen Ali and Ravi Bopara in the first match in Colombo, that does not guarantee victory.Between them, Cook, Bell and Morgan have made three half-centuries, with a top score of 56, in 32 innings since the start of England’s home season, when Peter Moores took over as head coach. In the same period, only four times has a bowler achieved a four-wicket haul – one of them against Scotland in a game reduced to 20 overs – with the most recent being Chris Woakes in the India match at Cardiff in August.Finn has only played four times since returning from almost a year in a peculiar wilderness all of his own but he issued a strong call for the team to start producing.”I think we need to keep showing balls. I think we need to front up and get out there and face everything that is put in front of us,” he said. “If we can bat the way we did in the first ODI, that is a great template for us moving forward and as bowlers we need to adapt to conditions better. In fact as a team we need to adapt better.”That is something we can keep improving on and working on. It is about being smart when you’re out there on the pitch and training smart beforehand for the conditions you’re going to face. We are definitely moving in the right direction.”England went backwards during Saturday’s eight-wicket defeat, after the initial encouragement provided chiefly by Moeen in the first rubber. While it could be said that succumbing to spin on a slow Colombo track should not dramatically alter their planning for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the way the team misjudged the situation ought to provide a valuable lesson. “When you go out onto the pitch you have to communicate about the conditions and work out what is a good score and how we’re going to go about making it,” Finn said.England have a maximum of 10 ODIs before they begin their World Cup campaign – assuming the weather in Sri Lanka continues to show clemency – and they must soon start showing signs of life if the tournament is to be confronted with any enthusiasm. Some people head off into remote parts of the world in order to find themselves. It is about time England did so.”If you put it all together we’ve got 10 games, which is 1000 overs of cricket to play until the World Cup so we’ve got a good amount of time to get ready,” Finn said. “It is about increasing as we go through with how good we’re getting, so that when it comes to the beginning of the World Cup, we hit the ground running. We don’t want to be losing games we want to be winning, but if we take everything in our stride now and keep improving then I think we’ll be in a great place come the World Cup.”
