'Need to adapt to conditions' – Clarke

Michael Clarke has admitted that Australia will have to adapt quickly if the pitches produced for the Investec Ashes series are similar in character to that in Cardiff, where his side was heavily beaten as England took a 1-0 lead. Clarke was hopeful of seeing a more lively surface at Lord’s, just as he hoped to have a fit Mitchell Starc to call on in the second Test.On a slow, dry Cardiff pitch, Australia were bundled out twice in 154.2 overs, after England had won the toss and posted 430. England’s attack showed the discipline and patience required as they completed victory inside four days. Clarke said his team needed to improve if they were to win a first Ashes series in England since 2001.”That’s part of playing international cricket, you got to have success away from home as well and a big part of that is adapting to conditions,” Clarke told Sky Sports. “Let’s wait and see what the wicket’s like at Lord’s, I look forward to hopefully seeing a little bit more grass, but if we get similar conditions we’ve got to play better than we did here.”We know what’s expected of us as individual players, we know the conditions, all the guys have been able to see that now. I think the guys have prepared really well, we just haven’t played our best cricket against a good opposition. If you don’t play your best you lose.”Starc was Australia’s most successful bowler, although he was intermittently erratic in taking 7 for 174, but he visibly struggled with an ankle injury during the second innings. He was able to bat on the final day, lasting almost an hour during a 72-run stand with Mitchell Johnson, and Clarke was positive about his chances of appearing at Lord’s, with the second Test starting on Thursday. His loss, after the sudden retirement of Ryan Harris, would be another blow.”He walked out and batted, which was a positive, he was still able to bowl and took a couple of wickets in the second innings, so hopefully he’ll be fit and available for the second Test,” Clarke said. “The real positive for us was that he was able to bowl and get through it.”Despite having had England 43 for 3 on the first morning, Australia let the advantage slip – chiefly through Joe Root, who was dropped by Brad Haddin on nought, scoring a century. Australia then slipped from 180 for 2 to 308 all out, as a succession of batsmen got in and got out, conceding a 122-run deficit that they never recovered from. Clarke did not wish to dwell on specific moments, concluding instead that England had been the better team.”To cut a long story short I think we were outplayed in all three facets of the game. I think England’s batting in the first innings, their bowling throughout the whole game and their catching was exceptional. We’ve got some work to do before the second Test.”That’s the difference, when you’re playing against a very good team, when you get in you’ve got to cash in. If you get opportunities as a bowling and fielding unit, you’ve got to hang on to those chances.”

Brukner foreshadows concussion protocol changes

Australia’s team doctor Peter Brukner believes cricket will eventually follow Australia’s football codes and introduce a system in which players leave the field for concussion assessment after blows to the head

Australia’s team doctor Peter Brukner believes cricket will eventually follow Australia’s football codes and introduce a system in which players leave the field for concussion assessment after blows to the head. The assessment process was the subject of attention on day two in Christchurch, when Steven Smith was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner.Smith fell to the ground before getting to his feet again, and Brukner and Australia’s physio David Beakley ran onto the field to assess whether he needed any treatment. After spending roughly five minutes on the field, Brukner saw no signs of concussion and decided that Smith could continue his innings, but he said further testing had been undertaken later that day and the next morning.”There are things we look for, how well orientated they are, how alert they are, and there’s standard questions that you always ask automatically,” Brukner said after day four at Hagley Oval. “We took him through those. He answered all those questions perfectly. He seemed quite alert. We kept talking to him in that five minutes and by the end of that five minutes I was comfortable that there was nothing too serious going on.”The incident occurred in the last over before tea and Brukner also spent time with Smith during the tea break, as well as using a computerised concussion test called Cogstate after stumps that day. A test of cognitive function that assesses a wide range of areas including reaction times, Cogstate was again used to assess Smith before play on the third morning.”We have baseline measures for all the players in the Australian squad. We did that again on that night, and we were able to compare that with his baseline. And there was no difference between what he did on Sunday night and the baseline. And he was feeling okay. I repeated that test on Monday morning, just because sometimes they have a delayed response and deteriorate overnight. Once again he felt okay and the test was okay.”Smith was also assessed at other breaks in play, and showed no signs of concussion. Brukner said that while there were “grey areas” in determining concussion, if he had any doubts he would not hesitate to rule a player out, as he did when Chris Rogers missed two Tests in the West Indies last year following a blow to the helmet at training, and he also took Rogers from the field following a blow during the Lord’s Test.”There are some very clear-cut concussions, they’re knocked out and talking gibberish and so on, there are others who are absolutely fine. And there’s a grey area,” Brukner said. “I accept it’s a difficult … we would love a test to say yes that’s a concussion, that’s not a concussion. But we’ve got our symptoms, we’ve got our questions, we’ve got our computer tests, that’s our package at the moment. That’s what we go on.”Unlike cricketers, AFL and NRL footballers who suffer blows to the head are taken from the field for a 20-minute period to be assessed and reduce the risk of further blows in case of a delayed concussion reaction. Brukner said he expected that cricket would eventually follow the football codes and introduce such a system.”There’s a lot of things on the table at the moment about concussion subs and all that sort of stuff,” he said. “It’s complicated. I think the football codes feel that 20 minutes is about right. It would be nice to take someone off for 20 minutes. I think ultimately something will come in on those lines. I think it’s got to, these days.”The climate is out there and cricket will do it … After that five minutes out there, if I’d had doubts, I’d have said come off – you can have a replacement, it’s not as if you can’t bat again – come off and we’ll do a more thorough assessment. There was no indication to me out there that that was required. The next stage is to take them off and fully assess them. But he seemed fine to me, so I felt comfortable to keep him out there.”

Goiás: Tadeu; Yago Rocha, Fábio Sanches, Rafael Vaz e Marcelo Hermes (Jefferson); Gilberto, Léo Sena e Thalles; Michael, Rafael Moura e Leandro Barcia. Técnico: Ney Franco.

Klusener seeks arbitration over Dolphins dismissal

Lance Klusener, the former Dolphins coach, is seeking arbitration over his dismissal from the franchise through South Africa’s Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration

Lance Klusener, the former Dolphins coach, is seeking arbitration over his dismissal from the franchise through South Africa’s Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). The hearing is expected to take place in two weeks’ time. The CCMA is an independent dispute resolution body, not a court of law. It looks at, among other things, unfair dismissals.Klusener confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that he is seeking arbitration but declined to discuss the nature of his complaint. “The process is still ongoing, so I cannot say too much,” he said.Dolphins CEO Pete de Wet said, similarly, “I am unable to comment on the process or the likely outcomes.”Klusener was informed that his contract would not be renewed in February and was relieved of his duties immediately, even though the season’s fixtures had not been completed. At the time de Wet said Klusener’s dismissal was purely a “business decision”.Coaching duties were handed over to Yashin Ebrahim, a former Dolphins coach, and Roger Telemachus, who was previously in charge of the Kwa-Zulu Natal provincial side. Ebrahim is known to have applied for the main job. Dolphins are likely to announce their new coach at the same time as Klusener’s hearing is scheduled. The time frame makes it unlikely that Klusener will get his job back, although he remains open to that possibility. He has not had other work since he was sacked, and admitted he would still like to be part of the cricketing structures at the franchise, even as it negotiates difficult times. “I invested a lot of time and effort there,” he said. “So I would be upset if things didn’t work out – not just for me, but for the franchise and cricket as a whole.”Dolphins went trophy-less in the 2015-16 season, finishing fifth out of six teams in both the first-class and the one-day cup, although they reached the final of the 20-over competition. The franchise has also lost several players ahead of next season. Kyle Abbott, who is nationally contracted and can thus choose which franchise he wants to play for, has opted for Warriors, while batsmen Jonathan Vandiar and Daniel Sincuba have signed with Titans.

Jayasuriya back to lead selection panel

Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed the return of Sanath Jayasuriya as chief selector, little more than a year since he stepped down from the role

Sri Lanka have lost several senior players since Sanath Jayasuriya’s previous spell as selector•AFP

Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed the return of Sanath Jayasuriya as chief selector, little more than a year since he stepped down from the role. The board had expressed a desire to reinstall Jayasuriya as chief selector for several weeks but was awaiting the sports minister’s approval, which it has now received. The new selection panel takes office on May 1 and will serve for two years. The other members of the four-person panel are former wicketkeeper-batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana, who was once Jayasuriya’s opening partner; former fast bowler Eric Upashantha, who has worked in a Jayasuriya-led committee in the past; and former offspinner Ranjith Madurasinghe, who is a member of the present selection committee under Aravinda de Silva. Jayasuriya had also joined de Silva’s panel in the weeks preceding his appointment “in order to provide continuity”, in SLC secretary Mohan de Silva’s words. The Test squad to England is likely to be selected by the de Silva-led committee, as the team is due to depart on May 4. However, Jayasuriya’s panel is set to take over in time for when the limited-overs squads for the tour are named.Jayasuriya previously held the post from January 2013 to March 2015 and developed a reputation for being a hands-on selector, as he was often seen around the team during tours and training sessions. During that period, Sri Lanka won a World T20 and a Test series in England, both in 2014, before exiting the 2015 World Cup in the quarter-finals. It was Jayasuriya’s committee that formalised Angelo Mathews’ ascension to the Test and ODI captaincy. However, the period was also beset by public disagreements between Jayasuriya and senior players, who have now retired.Beyond the trip to England, Sri Lanka have other major series on their horizon in the coming year. They are scheduled to host Australia in July and August, before departing for a full tour of South Africa in December.
