West Brom fans upset after Albion agree fee with Man City for Rogers

[ad_pod ]

West Brom’s trials and tribulations with their youth academy looks set to continue after it was confirmed by Express & Star that Albion had agreed a compensation fee with Manchester City for young star Morgan Rogers.

The 16-year-old looks set to depart for £4m and will become the second teenager of that age to leave the Hawthorns in a short period of time.

Only last week Louie Barry walked out of the club, reportedly signing for Barcelona after rejecting PSG.

And reacting to the news on Twitter, fans of the Baggies were understandably hugely frustrated. One supporter went as far as saying the club was finished whilst one asked how they could send their season ticket back.

A further individual made reference to Barry as well, suggesting that both him and Rogers leaving would offer no encouragement ahead of the new campaign.

One tweeter said that the fee West Brom would be getting for the youngster was disgraceful.

Rogers was in red hot form at youth level last term, scoring 14 goals and claiming seven assists in just 24 outings.

The academy appears to be in turmoil at the moment after losing backroom staff members Mark Harrison and Mike Scott this summer too.

Spurs supporters have to ignore Arsenal fan jibes

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Arsenal fans are at it already.

They believe they have put one over Tottenham Hotspur by agreeing a deal to sign Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid.

The deal is a loan. It does not include a purchase option.

This is a win for Arsenal, right?

The fact of the matter, though, is that Spurs fans, really, need to ignore this because, at the end of the day, it’s nonsense.

Sources confirmed to Football FanCast earlier this month that Spurs were in talks over a deal to sign Ceballos. Mauricio Pochettino, the club’s manager, was keen to sign him as he felt he would bring an extra dimension to the side’s midfield.

Yet chairman Daniel Levy, negotiating the deal, was desperate to include a purchase option in any move that would have allowed the club to buy Ceballos for £45m next summer.

Real ultimately rejected that request because Arsenal did not insist upon such a clause. Ceballos will return to Real next summer. Spurs, as other reports have stated, did not intend to be used as a stepping stone for a player looking to extend their own career.

Arsenal, clearly, are fine with it, and this is what fans are celebrating.

Spurs fans would do well to ignore them; the club have already broken their transfer record once this summer to purchase Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a fee of over £50m and are reportedly closing in on Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso, another deal that will cost over £50m.

Ryan Sessegnon, the Fulham teenager, is another target.

There is also talk that Arsenal have beaten Spurs to the punch on Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba when, in reality, Pochettino wanted him in his squad for the 2019/20 season, per sources. The Gunners are set to pay €30m (£26.8m) for him and then loan him back to France. That’s another win.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Of course, social media is a hive of this. It is the ideal place to spout nonsense opinions about football because, really, what else is there to do?

Arsenal fans fling jibes and digs at Tottenham fans constantly and vice versa.

The reality is that Arsenal will be signing a player who is undoubtedly an upgrade on the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka and who has won the Player of the Tournament at the Under-21 European Championships in his career. Saliba, too, could turn into a very fine defender.

But these are not deals to celebrate, to rub the noses of their rivals in.

Spurs are on an upward curve, bringing in players on permanent deals and instantly strengthening their squad.

Arsenal are either loaning a player with the intention of him returning to his parent club next year, or sending him back to whence he came almost immediately.

Whatever hashtag you put on it, this isn’t a win for the Gunners.

Wolves: Molineux target Benoit Badiashile left out of Monaco squad

Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile has been omitted from his club’s squad for their pre-season tour of Portugal amid reported interest from Wolves.

French publication L’Equipe reported that the 18-year-old centre-back was not among the 22-man squad for their pre-season games against Braga and FC Porto.

L’Equipe had previously reported [via Get Football News France] that the player was being courted by Wolves for a loan deal with an option to buy, with the same outlet via Birmingham Live claiming that Wolves were preparing a bid of £35million for Badiashile.

Badiashile broke into Monaco’s first team last season, playing 26 times for the Ligue 1 club. He ended the campaign with one goal and one assist to his name.

His profile on WhoScored.com identifies him as an astute passer of the ball and his statistics from last season appear to back that up, with a passing success rate of 89.5%.

That figure was significantly higher than those managed by Wolves’ centre-backs Conor Coady (84.3%), Willy Boly (81%) and Ryan Bennett (79.6%) last season.

Badiashile not only had the best passing accuracy of all those players but also recorded the most passes per game with 54.5, ahead of Boly’s 47.6, Coady’s 44.4 and Bennett’s 39.6.

The Monaco teenager tends to favour short passes, with 48.7 of his 54.5 passes per game being played short (89.4% of total).

Boly played 41.6 short passes per game (87.4% of total), with Bennett recording 33.8 short passes per match (85.4% of total). Coady tends to go longer than the others, with just 33.2 of his 44.4 passes per game being kept short (74.8% of total).

A scout report on Soccersouls referenced Badiashile’s “quick anticipation and ability to read the game to perfection”. He averaged 1.3 tackles and 1.1 interceptions last season in Ligue 1, very respectable figures for a player in his first season at senior level.

He already performs better than Coady in that regard, with the Wolves captain averaging 0.8 per game for both metrics. He still trails Boly (2.4 tackles and two interceptions per game) and Bennett (1.7 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game), but he is more than a decade younger than both of those players, so time is on his side for this aspect of his game to get even better.

Badiashile already looks to be a highly mature and capable centre-back for someone so young. His crisp passing could help Wolves to become even more adept at playing out from the back, with twelve.football alluding to how Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are already comfortable in doing so.

Also, his reading of the play seems to be very pronounced for a teenager, judging by his tackling and interception figures. Although £35m seems a lofty fee to pay for someone with only 26 senior appearances, Badiashile looks like a talent who could bring tremendous intelligence on and off the ball to Wolves’ backline if they were to sign him.

Wolves fans, do you think your club could sign Badiashile in this transfer window and would he improve Nuno’s defence? Let us know your views in the comments section below!

Leicester City supporters show support for Kelechi Iheanacho

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City’s Premier League preparations continued with simultaneous matches on Saturday. Brendan Rodgers took a stronger squad to Stoke City where they came out on top 2-1 whilst another side fought out a 2-2 draw to League One outfit Rotherham United.

Kelechi Iheanacho netted a brace in that game with new signing Justin James, Demari Gray and academy graduate Harvey Barnes all featuring. The 22-year-old posted on Twitter following his performance…

The striker hasn’t had too much of an opportunity in the east Midlands which has potentially affected his goal return – or lack of. Last season echoed that after he featured in 30 Premier League matches, 21 of which were substitute appearances, where he scored just once and laid on an assist on three occasions.

Iheanacho’s double against Rotherham has led to some of the Foxes fanbase throwing their support behind their number eight with many wanting him to succeed this season.

One fan claimed the 22-year-old would score ten or more goals this season and that everyone was waiting for it. Another supporter believed Iheanacho would become a Leicester legend soon enough.

Others replied saying he needed to keep working hard and to keep up the momentum whilst one member of the King Power crowd asked the forward to prove any doubters wrong this season and show why Leicester signed him in the first place.

The Nigerian international cost Leicester £25m back in August 2017 as he made the switch from Manchester City which also made him the most expensive Nigerian player ever, surpassing Odion Ighalo’s £20m move to China.

West Ham in talks to sign Albian Ajeti from FC Basel

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United are in talks to sign Albian Ajeti from FC Basel prior to Thursday’s transfer deadline, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The Hammers have already strengthened their attack this summer, acquiring Sebastian Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt for a club-record fee.

And they are now said to have entered into talks with the Swiss club over a deal to sign the 22-year-old.

The Standard reports that Basel value Ajeti at £8m and there is not yet said to be an agreement in place between the two clubs.

West Ham currently have Haller and Javier Hernandez as their out-and-out striking options, though Michail Antonio can play up front.

Break the bank

Sources at the club have confirmed that the Hammers have a remarkably limited transfer budget with which to work in the last week of the transfer window.

A deal at £8m would actually smash the current amount set aside for deals.

Thus, a decision needs to be made: Is Ajeti worth the investment?

First of all, the club need bodies up front, with only Haller and Hernandez as their out-and-out forwards. That feels like a recipe for disaster, particularly if the club-record buy picks up an injury.

Secondly, the numbers strengthen Ajeti’s case. He scored 21 goals in 43 outings last season, having netted 17 in 37 in 2017/18. He has already kicked off this season with two goals in three games.

He would be a solid, reliable hand who could offer some support whenever was needed.

It remains to be seen, however, if the Irons will feel inclined to break the bank.

They should, particularly with the big kick-off less than a week away.

Wolves fans debate Morgan Gibbs-White after first professional goal

[ad_pod ]

Wolves cruised into the next round of Europa League qualifying by repeating their first leg exploits with another 4-0 whitewash against Armenian outfit Pyunik.

The result was the club’s highest-ever aggregate score in a European competition and the first time they have recorded back-to-back wins in Europe since the 1971/72 season.

There were goals from a quartet of players, all of which came in the second half with Pedro Neto, Morgan Gibbs-White, Ruben Vinagre and Diogo Jota all scoring – the latter with the pick of the bunch after netting a sublime overhead kick three minutes from time.

Nuno Santo’s men are now just two games away from the group stages with Serie A side Torino standing in their way.

The performance from one of Wolves’ goalscorers has particularly drawn mass debate amongst the Molineux crowd.

Gibbs-White scored his first competitive professional goal for the club after 57 appearances and fans are torn over the 19-year-old with one believing he’s still some way off the mark but another noted that he’s a brilliant talent.

One supporter claimed that you would expect the 5 foot 10 midfielder to shine against a team of Pyunik’s stature and one day he will be great but for now he makes far too many mistakes.

Another fan added that he couldn’t understand the abuse the youngster gets as he’s a local lad whilst one said that Gibbs-White just doesn’t get him excited.

Manchester United fans react to reports Harry Maguire is already becoming a leader

[ad_pod ]

So after an entire summer of trying to get their man, Harry Maguire’s first few weeks at Manchester United have been a resounding success.

The England international enjoyed an impressive Premier League debut for his new side, helping the team clinch a clean sheet in a 4-0 thrashing of rivals Chelsea.

Whilst the 26-year-old’s impact is already being felt on the football pitch, reports are indicating that the centre-back is having an equally influential effect off it too.

According to The Sun, Maguire is “already emerging” as United’s leader and a club source has revealed how the former Leicester star has given the back-four “renewed confidence”.

After hearing about Maguire’s reported impact on the team, United fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the club’s summer signing.

Many Red Devils supporters hailed the 26-year-old and insisted that they could see him becoming the “new” Nemanja Vidic if he continues to perform well.

Indeed, some fans suggested Maguire is showing captaincy material and urged the club to “give him the armband now”.

Real Madrid should let Luka Modrić take a backseat and put their trust in the next generations

Just a year ago, in the summer of 2018, the world was at Luka Modrić’s feet. The veteran midfielder once again had the chance of leading his country at a World Cup, this time captaining them to Russia where, just as everyone else in the tournament, they had hopes and dreams to chase.

But despite almost everyone in the footballing world having a similar ultimate goal in their mind, only the chosen few get to live it. Modrić was certainly one of those chosen few. He may not have won the World Cup but he got the next best thing.

Just like Lionel Messi four years before him, the little magician got a silver medal around his neck and a World Cup Golden Ball in his hands. Not long after that, the award tally grew once again as the midfielder was the first human to break the duopoly of two aliens in the Ballon d’Or race.

By all accounts, the now 33-year-old Croatian had reached the absolute peak of his career. Some of his fellow national team compatriots felt the same for their own careers so they decided to call it a day. Reaching the final of the World Cup in Russia was the greatest achievement in Croatia’s history, beating the bronze from 1998 in France.

But it’s not just the national team that brought success to Modrić. Three consecutive Champions League crowns and four overall with Real Madrid speak for themselves. He’s seen it all and more importantly, he’s (almost) won it all.

And despite all of that, there still comes a moment when your time in the sun has to end, and looking at the current situation both at the club and national team level, that time for Modrić just might be right now.

That statement might seem like an obvious course of action given that he is 33 years old, after all. Even if he was in absolute peak condition, going on for much longer on the highest of levels would certainly be a stretch. But his last outing with Real Madrid, although ending in an eventual victory for Los Blancos, was very much symbolic in representing the Croatian’s current status.

Modrić struggled to catch up with the 25-year-old ex-Barcelona player Denis Suarez and was really late with his tackle to snatch the ball away from his rival. Instead, he caught his leg with a nasty stamp.

After an initial check with VAR, the referee went straight for his back pocket, pulled out the card and Modrić saw red for the first time in his La Liga career with Real Madrid. And just like Suarez burst past him in a couple of steps on the touchline, it very much looked like time itself had gone by the Croatian as well.

He went straight for the locker room, confused and clearly not happy with the decision. But as brilliant and as important Modrić was for Real Madrid through all those years, as his countless silverware and achievements can attest, maybe it really is the right moment to step aside and give way to the younger generations.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Croatian was never really a great goalscorer or the one to pile up the assists. In his 304 games, he scored 17 goals and assisted 47. Decent numbers but he’s clearly not the one to put the finishing touches on a brilliant action. No, he’s the one to pull the strings, set it all up and make it possible.

He’s very much that figure behind the scenes, the engine that tirelessly works in order for the machine that is Real Madrid to grind everything down as well as it usually does.

But despite their opening day success against a tough opponent on a relatively tough ground in Vigo, the Whites very much look like they’re in a need of a revamp. The pre-season and basically the entirety of last season showed as much.

They haven’t won anything of significance in 2018/19 and were embarrassed and beaten in all three major competitions they took part in. They finished third in La Liga, they were beaten by Ajax in the Champions League and by Barcelona in Copa del Rey.

Going full circle with their managers and instilling Zinedine Zidane back at the helm is also something that kind off screamed desperation; a last gasp of returning to the glory days that he made possible. And maybe that’s the biggest proof that Modrić is not who he used to be.

Granted, putting the failure of the whole team on the shoulders of one man, however good he might be, is not really the way to go but Modrić really was the heart of that team in their glory years of European domination.

Sure, Cristiano Ronaldo and even Gareth Bale banged in the goals but Modrić made them tick and that’s something the stats will always have a difficulty portraying correctly. Maybe his passing accuracy was good or he sent an impressive amount of key balls but that’s still not who he is.

He is a silent worker and one whose contribution can often slip under the radar if you don’t watch him play closely. And with his form dipping, his influence veining and his twilight years of football rapidly approaching, maybe it is time to freshen things up.

This is true for the whole core of Real Madrid but Modrić was the engine and if the engine is not working properly anymore, problems are bound to happen sooner rather than later.

Maybe binning him immediately is a harsh option but letting him take a backseat for once and leaving him to influence the changing of the guard from the background is not.

There comes a time when every footballer has to face this same decision. For Modrić, the good old saying “quit while you’re ahead” might be the best piece advice he’s going to get.

Becuase at the end of the day, you either “die” a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Iker Casillas, anyone?

Manchester United star Victor Lindelof reveals what it takes to reach the "next level"

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to MUTV, Victor Lindelof has revealed what it will take for Manchester United to reach the “next level”.

What did he say?

The Sweden international has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred option to partner summer signing Harry Maguire in central defence this season, but the Red Devils still have an abundance of options waiting in the wings.

Now, Lindelof has admitted competition for places at the back will inspire the United side to greater heights, and keep them on their toes.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “We have very good players in the squad and everyone wants to play. In the first two games, we’ve been playing that back five (David De Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire and Luke Shaw) and have been performing well but it’s hard because you always have to perform well.

“It’s because there is always someone there who wants to play but that’s part of football. It’s very important for us and good for the team to have that. It’s very important for a team to have competition for places. If you don’t have that, then maybe you don’t push yourself to the next level. It’s what we’re doing every day right now and also what will take us to the next level, I think.”

Pressure

Sometimes, competition can be all it takes for a player to step their game up. Maguire’s big-money arrival has meant the rest of United’s centre-backs are competing for just the one spot now, and that will inevitably see people rising to the occasion, or crumbling under the pressure.

What is perhaps interesting about the defender’s comments is just how little the idea of “competition” applies to United’s forward options though.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Romelu Lukaku’s exit and Alexis Sanchez’s potential departure means the Red Devils are awfully light at the top, and is perhaps a big reason why someone like Jesse Lingard continues to disappoint. Why would the England international fear losing his spot in the team when there aren’t too many ready-made players keeping him on edge?

So, whilst United’s defence may see the benefits of competition for places, the attack may suffer from a lack of it, which is surely the first thing they must address in next year’s transfer windows.

Sheffield Wednesday’s predicted starting XI under Danny Cowley

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield Wednesday head into the international break with quite the dilemma if reports are to be believed.

On Tuesday evening, Sky Sports claimed the club were in advanced talks with Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley and his assistant, brother Nicky, over becoming their permanent manager.

Currently, the club have had Lee Bullen in caretaker charge for a third spell after Steve Bruce left on the eve of the new season last month.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Earlier in the week, Tony Pulis had been linked to the job by The Sun, but it appears that Cowley could be a serious contender to the post.

The 40-year-old rejected a move to Huddersfield in order to continue his journey at the Imps, so it remains to be seen whether or not he will actually become the Owls’ new boss.

This is how Wednesday could lineup under Cowley:

In four years at the club, the Cowley’s have guided Lincoln to two promotions as well as an EFL Trophy – playing very much the same brand of football throughout.

They believe in their philosophy and stick to it.

The formation most used by the management team is a 4-4-1-1 which utilises a lone target man in attack with a deep-lying forward playing just off him, and it is something that the Owls do have at their disposal with both Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri being able to occupy those two spots.

Cowley also likes his team to play out from the back so it could see Sam Hutchinson drop into defence having played in midfield this season because he averages a passing success rate of 83.5% which is higher than Tom Lees (72.8%), whilst Julian Borner is likely to play alongside him (83.7%).

Jacob Murphy can play the inside forward role on the left-flank, averaging 2.2 shots per game as well as 2.6 dribbles, per WhoScored. He’s also scored one goal in four starts this season.

On the other side, Adam Reach can become the more traditional winger, whipping in crosses for the target man – he averages 0.8 per game and has already recorded one assist this season.

It would appear that Wednesday have all the tools needed to suit a Cowley system, meaning the lack of a transfer window shouldn’t be too much of an issue. It’s just if he can make the next step up, a considerable step up at that.
