Is this the real Curtis Jones? Liverpool’s opinion-splitter is fighting hard for his Reds future

The 22-year-old has impressed Jurgen Klopp with his recent performances, but how will the Reds' summer rebuild affect his prospects?

It used to be Jordan Henderson, didn’t it? Perhaps Lucas Leiva before that, and in days gone by it might have been Danny Murphy or Ray Houghton or Ronnie Whelan. What is it about Liverpool midfielders and their battle for appreciation?

The Reds, seemingly, have always had at least one player who splits opinion among supporters, and right now it appears Curtis Jones has taken on that mantle.

The 22-year-old has been enjoying a decent run in Jurgen Klopp's side of late. Wednesday’s win at West Ham was Jones’ fifth successive start in the Premier League, his best run in more than 12 months.

After a season disrupted heavily by injury, the young Scouser is clearly relishing the chance to be back on the pitch and showing what he can do. His performance against West Ham, as it was at Leeds previously, was that of a player with both a point to prove and a role to play, going forward.

And with Liverpool set to embark upon a significant, and overdue, rebuild of their midfield this summer, Jones’ return to action, and his return to form, may have come at just the right time, both for player and club.

    Earning Klopp’s trust

Klopp was certainly impressed by Jones’ contribution at West Ham. “He was super-important,” he told his post-match press conference. “He set the tone again with the first counter-pressing situation.

“He is in a really good moment, a really good moment, and [that is] super-helpful.”

The Reds boss has spoken recently about “the ticket” into his starting XI, and how pressing and off-the-ball work is as important as anything a player does in possession.

That suits Jones, whose strength lies in his ability to retain possession, usually through simple, short passes and combinations, and, crucially, his ability to help win the ball back in the opposition half, forcing turnovers and picking up second balls by being in the right position regularly.

“This team is set up now for the defending, for the defensive readiness,” Klopp said. “This is a ticket into the team.

“That doesn't mean the other boys don't do that, but these guys now do it like animals, if you want – and really, I like that, how we chase the ball again and these kinds of things.

“On top of that, we are able to play quite good football and Curtis is involved in that as well, absolutely.”

At the moment, Jones is keeping seasoned midfielders – Thiago Alcantara, James Milner – as well as another highly-gifted youngster – Harvey Elliott – out of the Liverpool team. And while his performances are perhaps not as flashy or as decisive as some would like, he is clearly doing enough to impress his manager at the moment.

And that, really, is the thing that matters.

    Early hype

Wednesday’s game at West Ham was Jones’ 91st senior appearance for Liverpool, an impressive figure considering he emerged at a time when the Reds have been competing year-on-year for the biggest prizes in football. There have not been many games in recent years that haven't had something riding on them.

Jones was earmarked for success at a young age, making his Under-18s bow at 15, before being handed his professional debut in the FA Cup at Wolves shortly before his 18th birthday in January 2019.

It was during the following campaign, 2019-20, that he really exploded though. Having scored the winning penalty at the Kop End in a Carabao Cup win over Arsenal, and made his Premier League bow at Bournemouth, Jones announced himself to the world with a stunning winning goal as Liverpool defeated Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup at Anfield in January 2020.

He followed that up with another strike at Shrewsbury in the next round, and then captained a young Reds side at Anfield in the replay, the youngest skipper in Reds history.

By the end of the campaign, he had more than a dozen senior appearances, and a Premier League winners’ medal, to his name. The curve was very much an upward one.

  • Getty

    Stop-start progress

And there has been significant progress since, too. Jones played 34 times in the 2020-21 campaign, and 27 times last season. He has scored in the Premier League and the Champions League, and played 14 times for England at U21 level, scoring four goals.

Despite that, there is a feeling that he is not as far along in his development as many expected. While peers – Phil Foden, perhaps, or Bukayo Saka – have been able to establish themselves as stars for their respective clubs, Jones is still fighting for approval.

Part of that is down to bad luck. He has suffered at least three freak injuries since the start of the 2021-22 campaign – a bang on the head which kept him out of the opening games, an eye injury suffered in training which sidelined him for nearly two months, and a stress reaction in his tibia which has limited his training and game time severely this season.

Prior to this latest run, he had been able to start only two games, with the injury making it impossible to enjoy a full week of training, pain-free.

Now, it appears he has come through that period, able to train fully and reaping the benefits. “From the moment he was allowed to train properly again, it looked – step by step – really good,” Klopp said this week. He will hope that continues.

    Why fans remain split

On the face of it, Jones should really be something of a fans’ favourite. He is talented, confident, works hard and he has been with the club since the age of nine. He’s a Liverpool lad, as well as a Liverpool player.

But while he clearly has big support among the Reds’ fanbase, he also has a lot of doubters still to win over. Plenty are unconvinced as to his role in the team, and whether he has the tools to become a regular, a real regular, in Klopp’s side.

Maybe some of that comes down to that early hype and expectation. In Liverpool’s youth teams, Jones was a creative hub, who would pull off outrageous tricks, dribble past players for fun, and create and score goals.

We have seen flashes of that player at senior level, but there has also been a clear plan to smooth off some of those edges and to turn the showman into a far more functional, safe kind of player.

At times, indeed, it can feel a little too safe. There are occasions when Jones needs to move the ball quicker, to back himself with a shot at goal or a decisive final pass. Where some of his age – Foden, Saka, Jude Bellingham – influence games through goals and assists as well as their tactical and physical qualities, Jones has 18 goal contributions in 91 appearances for Liverpool. Not enough for an attack-minded player of such talent – even if only 54 of those 91 appearances have been starts.

The feeling generally, even among his backers, is that there is more in the locker, more levels to be found. He’s shown, in spells, that he can do the things Klopp wants him to do, and which will get him into the team, but can he make the next step? At 22, that is a question still to be answered.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and the Premier League's most infamous transfer strops and strikes as Matheus Nunes refuses to train for Wolves

Matheus Nunes is not the first Premier League player to act out in order to secure a transfer

Matheus Nunes likely did not expect Manchester City to be sniffing around him this summer. However, a series of unfortunate events means that the midfielder could complete a move to the Etihad before the transfer window closes on Friday.

First, Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out for a significant chunk of the season through a hamstring injury. Then, City's pursuit of preferred target Lucas Paqueta ran aground, with the West Ham star reportedly under investigation by the FA due to breaching betting rules.

This has led to Nunes attracting the Cityzens' attention – and he's made it abundantly clear that he's willing to do anything to force the move through. After City saw an initial offer for the player turned down, he effectively went on strike, refusing to train for Wolves.

Manager Gary O'Neil is putting on a brave face publicly, insisting after his side's Carabao Cup victory over Blackpool that he expected Nunes to stay, but if the treble winners increase their offer, he will surely be on his way out of the door.

Of course, this behaviour is nothing new. Down through the years, we've seen several Premier League players employ some questionable tactics in order to secure a transfer.

    Pierre van Hooijdonk

Van Hooijdonk helped Nottingham Forest gain promotion to the Premier League with a stunning 1997-98 season that included 34 goals scored.

He often clashed with manager Dave Bassett, though, and eventually attempted to engineer a move away from the City Ground. The manager refused to let him go, despite Newcastle reportedly offering £7 million ($8.5m).

When Van Hooijdonk returned from World Cup duty in 1998, he believed the club was not well-positioned to start the new season.

The striker asked for a transfer and cited an agreement that allowed him to move at the end of the season should he wish. The owners refused, so Van Hooijdonk went on strike.

The protest lasted till November, when he reluctantly agreed to return. He scored just six goals that season and Forest ended up relegated. He eventually moved to the Netherlands, joining Vitesse for £3.5m ($4.2m).

    William Gallas

This is perhaps the craziest story on our list. Gallas left Chelsea to join Arsenal in 2006, but it wasn't an amicable split.

After the deal had been completed, Blues boss Jose Mourinho backed the release of a club statement that claimed Gallas threatened to score an own goal and get himself sent off if he were forced to play for the club again. It was also suggested that he had refused to play in the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool the previous season.

Chelsea also stated that despite not wanting to let Gallas leave, they reluctantly agreed in order to help secure the services of Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole.

Gallas was enraged by Chelsea's claims and issued a statement of his own in which he declared: "I certainly never said I'd try and score an own goal if I ever played for Chelsea again."

Regardless of whether the most damning accusations were accurate, Gallas did sit out a pre-season tour leading up to his Blues exit.

    Dimitar Berbatov

Did Sir Alex Ferguson deliberately unsettle Berbatov in the summer of 2008? Or were quotes attributed to the Scot simply the work of a mischievous media? Whatever the truth, the Tottenham striker clearly had his head turned by the news that Manchester United wanted to sign him.

Spurs filed a complaint with the Premier League, which Ferguson labelled "embarrassing", insisting that he had not told any newspaper that he expected to have Berbatov on board for the 2008-09 campaign.

By that stage, though, Berbatov was desperate to move to Old Trafford and he was left out of Tottenham's early-season clashes with Sunderland and Chelsea.

The Bulgarian was eventually allowed to leave by Spurs' seething chairman, Daniel Levy, but even Ferguson had been emotionally scared by the whole sorry episode, later writing that the transfer saga had been "more painful than my hip operation".

    Javier Mascherano

Mascherano was a hugely popular player at Liverpool, adored for the aggression and commitment he displayed each and every time he set foot on the pitch. The fans were bitterly disappointed, then, when he refused to play a game against Manchester City on August 23, 2010.

The problem was that Barcelona had made a bid for Mascherano and he was desperate to leave. He'd made his intentions known immediately after returning to Merseyside following the World Cup and he was under the impression that the club would let him leave if they received a reasonable offer.

Liverpool, though, did not want to give up one of the best midfielders in the world at the time, so Mascherano went AWOL for the trip to City.

He has since apologised to the fans for his actions but still maintains that he had no other choice.

"I was quite angry that they weren’t keeping their word," he later told . "Refusing to play at City was the way I found to show my annoyance.

"I’d told the club I wanted to leave for family reasons, so I was very upset to have to act the way I did. There was no other option – otherwise, Liverpool wouldn’t keep their promise."

They have now made a tidy profit on a product of their famed academy system, while also including a sell-on clause in their deal with Monaco, and everybody is happy.

Arteta told reporters when asked why the Gunners allowed Balogun to leave: “We didn’t have enough space for him in our squad for him to get the minutes that he needs. He did really well last year in his loan period and he’s evolving in the right way. He wanted the chance to continue developing his career. He’s going to a really good club, they have huge experience in developing talent – as everybody knows – so really happy for him.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Wrexham supporters are loving having Reynolds and McElhenney on board – with the club’s profile being enhanced around the world – not everybody has welcomed their presence, with followers of other clubs frustrated at seeing so much focus placed on one side.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Wrexham’s executive director Ker has told of attracting unwelcome attention: “No question there are more people having a go at us now. There are two factors in that. One: jealousy. I read comments from a lot of people who seem desperate to push the narrative that these two ‘Hollywood clowns’ see the club as their plaything and don’t care a thing about it and how they will destroy it. I do find that funny considering the proliferation of terrible owners in English football, who are openly fleecing their clubs or driving them into administration. Or are owned by some terrifying military junta from somewhere that specialises in throwing people down wells or whatever. It is amazing how many people burn energy in telling our fans, ‘I am going to laugh so much when you go out of business because of those two Hollywood idiots’.

“The other factor is we are slowly becoming a threat. When season one of the documentary came out, there were lots of fans (at clubs further up the divisions) saying, ‘Oh, good on them’, while patting Wrexham on the head. But then we win the National League and it changes to, ‘Oh, we might have to play them in a couple of seasons, so I’ll have to be really annoyed they have more money than we do’.”

Under-fire Jordan Henderson admits money was a contributing factor in decision to leave Liverpool for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Henderson made the move from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq in the summer, linking up with former Reds team-mate Steven Gerrard, who is the Saudi club's manager. However, Henderson has previously claimed that he did not move for the money, something he has now appeared to attempt to correct.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The midfielder was booed off by England fans when he was substituted against Australia last week, seemingly in protest at his decision to make the move to a country where being gay is illegal, given his previous support for the LGBTQIA+ community. He spoke out on the move in an interview with , before England played Italy, and he has attempted to clarify his previous comments in a wide-ranging interview in September, saying money was not the "sole reason" he moved – seemingly admitting that it did play a role.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Henderson told Channel 4 when asked if he understood why people were disappointed in him: "Yeah, definitely, I've said that before. I tried a little bit, I had an interview a few months ago and maybe some of the stuff I said didn't come out in the way that I thought I said it. An example of that would probably be in terms of when I said I didn't go out there solely for the money, I think that's a big difference. It's not a sole reason, rather than saying I didn't go out there for the money."

Henderson was also asked if he knew why people may not see him as a role model anymore, and he replied: "Yeah in certain areas, if that's what people want to think, and have a perception of that, then that's fine. I look at it in a different way, as I said before, I think having someone like myself, with the values that I have, in Saudi Arabia is only a good thing. I think before I went to Saudi, people knew the groups I'd supported and helped in the past, and not once has it ever been mentioned about when I'm going there, that I can't do this or can't do that. I think they know what my values are, they've accepted that, and all they ask in return is that I respect their values, religion, culture as well, which I've done."

‘Super necessary’ – Barcelona stars call for VAR in Women’s Champions League after controversial clash between Real Madrid and Chelsea

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes felt "robbed" by two controversial refereeing decisions that saw a penalty being awarded to Madrid despite Jessie Fleming committing the foul while outside of the area. Meanwhile, the second one incorrectly cancelled out Chelsea's potential winner from Niamh Charles as it was deemed offside forcing the Blues to leave the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium with just a point after being held to a 2-2 draw. This has prompted Barcelona players, Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo, to call for the immediate implementation of VAR in the Women's Champions League group stage.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Hansen while speaking to reporters said: "I think it has to be used in the Champions League from minute one when the group stage starts. Every year we are doing things to improve [the game], but it's clear that it should be utilised in the group phase as well as the knockouts. Like [this week], the games are intense, there are a lot of decisive situations and, at the end of the day, I think everyone just wants games to end with the result as it should end. If we can have help, that helps."

Hansen's teammate, Paralluelo, also urged UEFA to implement VAR from the group stages. In fact, the Blaugranas have been clamouring for the technology from the start of the campaign led by defender Mapi Leon who echoed the sentiments of her teammate back in October.

"At the end of the day, VAR is a tool that makes things as fair as possible on the pitch because of the support it provides," Paralluelo said.

"Not having it can lead to wrong decisions. We need it both in the league and in the Champions League [group phase]. I think it is super necessary."

The Red Devils took to social media to acknowledge Eriksen's 32nd birthday on February 14 with a caption that drew plenty of attention in the comments section of the post. Many users were left baffled by the 'more life' reference, with the Dane having collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest during his country's Euro 2020 group-stage fixture against Finland.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Indeed, the comments section of the Instagram post is dominated by supporters expressing their confusion at the choice of words used for the caption, with one user writing: "Admin carefully choosing the worst caption of all time 😭😭"

Another comment, that was liked by almost 6,000 other users, stated: "TF do you mean by more life?😭… Eriksen catching strays."

Other commenters added: "What the hell is that caption?", "I dont know wether its only me but i find the “more life” caption weird…. Feels like his living a borrowed life" and "Naaah Wtf is that caption!"

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The bemusement of supporters clearly stems from the cardiac arrest that Eriksen suffered while playing for Denmark back in June 2021. As a result of the traumatic incident, the former Inter midfielder had to be fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, that meant he wasn't allowed to continue playing in Serie A. Despite concerns about whether the 32-year-old would be able to resume his career, Eriksen joined Brentford in January 2022 and, after making 11 first-team appearances for Thomas Frank's side, he would eventually make the move to Old Trafford in the summer of that year.

Breaking into Ten Hag's starting XI will undoubtedly be the aim for Eriksen between now and the end of the season. The former Tottenham midfielder has made just 15 Premier League appearances in the 2023-24 campaign and has been consigned to a bench role, with Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro being the United manager's preferred duo in the central midfield area. Indeed, the Dane will likely have to consider his future in the summer, although he is under contract at Old Trafford until at least 2025.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Blaugranas played spectacular football to pick up their fourth triumph in five league matches to climb to the second place in the table, leapfrogging their Catalan rivals Girona. Despite a slow start, Raphinha's 20th-minute goal set the tone for the home side. Three additional goals in the second half from Joao Felix, Frenkie de Jong and Fermin Lopez sealed a comfortable victory for the hosts. Xavi was ecstatic afterwards and asserted that he remains optimistic about their chances of conquering Spain once again beating fierce rivals Madrid to the title.

Speaking on Barcelona's title chances, Xavi told reporters: "I think it's early, but yes. We don't throw in the towel. From the last 15 points we have 13, we have to believe until the end. We were missing a good game at home. In the Champions League, everything is open, it will be heads or tails, and we are on time."
