Aston Villa eye Rangers defender Bassey

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has now revealed some worrying Glasgow Rangers transfer news from Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Possible departures

Aside from the players that are going out of contract this summer, the Teddy Bears could also see departures for some of their key players as Premier League clubs circle the young stars at Ibrox.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The likes of Calvin Bassey and Ryan Kent have been linked with moves to the English top flight for big money, and so it may be difficult to keep them if big offers start to roll in.

The Latest: Dorsett update

Taking to Twitter, Dorsett has revealed that Aston Villa are just one of a number of clubs in the English top flight that have now made ‘enquiries’ over signing Bassey, with the Light Blues valuing him at over £25m:

“#avfc aren’t done yet, after stunning start to window, despite already committing £43m to 3 new signings.

“Understand Villa are among a number of PL clubs who’ve made enquiries about defender Calvin Bassey – who #rangersfc value at £25m+.”

The Verdict: Worrying

It is certainly worrying to hear the amount of Premier League teams circulating around Bassey, especially Villa.

As Dorsett mentions, they have already signed three players for a combined £43m so early on in the window, which suggests that they could hold no qualms splashing the cash to wrap up another quick deal for the 22-year-old.

Nonetheless, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side need to stay strong with their valuation, which would be a club-record sale, and not sell Bassey for a penny less.

Of course, the Dutchman will be hoping to keep hold of him anyway, ahead of what looks to be another busy season with added European football.

Arsenal can sign a new Ian Wright in Olise

If there is one person on this earth who has lived and breathed the very mantra of never giving up, it’s former Arsenal star Ian Wright.

The ex-striker was a marvel in the red and white at Highbury, scoring as many as 185 times in 288 outings for the Gunners.

That record puts him second only to Thierry Henry on Arsenal’s list of all-time goal scorers.

However, the move to north London came relatively late in his career. Wrighty as he’s become affectionately known was a late bloomer, as he laid down the foundations for the Jamie Vardy’s of this world to show that no matter how old you are, there is always more potential to be extracted.

When it comes to players who found their touch late into their career, Wright and Vardy are two of the most famous examples of the Premier League era.

Back in March, the Leicester forward overtook the former with 94 goals after turning 30 – the most out of any player who has played Premier League football.

They both have Arsenal in common too, although Vardy’s association is that of rejection, with the jovial attacker once turning them down.

But what, I hear you ask, is the relevance to this in the modern-day?

Well, Wright joined Arsenal from Crystal Palace and this summer, the Gunners could raid their fellow Londoners again.

They have previously been interested in a deal for Wilfried Zaha but it’s not the Ivorian on their radar this time. Instead, it’s Michael Olise who has captured the interest of Arsenal according to reports.

The young France youth international joined Palace last summer in a bargain £8m deal and it’s thought as though his valuation has now risen to around £35m.

It’s a considerable sum of money but one Arsenal won’t be afraid to pay. After all, France and the Islington club go hand in hand after Arsene Wenger’s time in the English capital.

Although Olise is a winger by trade, a different position to Wright, there would be shades of the deal that Arsenal successfully completed to bring the latter to Highbury back in 1991.

Over 30 years later and Olise could become the club’s new Wright.

Scoring as many as the now television pundit would be quite the accomplishment but the Palace youngster has the same sort of swagger and confidence to his play.

He is a joy to watch and is learning the game from a certain Patrick Vieira. Wherever you look, the former Reading man is beginning to smell Arsenal and he’ll have certainly picked up a few of the club’s philosophies given his current manager.

Throughout the current campaign, the 20-year-old found the net on four occasions and registered nine assists in 32 games. It’s a fine record for someone who was playing at the highest level for the first time in his career.

So good have been his performances that he’s even earned the praise of Wright himself.

“When you watch what Zaha brings to the team, Wilf is what 29 now? Here you are talking about a youngster that has a massive future,” the former Gunner began.

“When you look at what he does in the final third. Go and do what you want. He is going to be somebody that is going to do unbelievable things,” Wright concluded.

Olise has earned further praise from Reading defender Tom McIntyre who hailed his “special ability” while Squawka writer Muhammad Butt called him a “wizard”. On that evidence, he’d be quite the capture for Mikel Arteta’s men.

Crucially, he’d also fit the club’s philosophy of buying young players who are yet to reach their ceiling.

Should the chance present itself, it would surely be a no brainer for Edu and co to bring the dazzling French star to north London.

As Wright eludes to, this is someone who is going places within the world of football.

Tottenham Hotspur: Fabrizio Romano reveals latest Bergwijn exit ‘talks’

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have received an official bid for Steven Bergwijn from Ajax, with ‘talks’ now ongoing regarding the winger’s N17 exit.

The Lowdown: Bit-part player

The Dutchman originally made the switch to the Premier League when he joined the Lilywhites in a £27 move from PSV Eindhoven back in 2020, and during his two years in north London has made 83 appearances to date.

The 24-year-old’s current contract with Spurs isn’t set to expire until 2025 after penning a five-year deal on arrival, but it’s been recently revealed that he is open to a move away from the club during the upcoming window following frustration at a lack of game time, and it appears as though there has been a huge development involving his future in the capital.

The Latest: Romano confirms Bergwijn bid

In a new post on his personal Twitter account, Romano confirmed that Tottenham are open to Bergwijn’s departure, with work to seal his exit already underway. He wrote:

“Tottenham have received an official bid from Ajax for Steven Bergwijn, as per @telegraaf. The proposal is now confirmed – Bergwijn would be ready to agree personal terms with Ajax until June 2027.

“Tottenham are open to sell him this summer, talks now ongoing.”

The Verdict: A Return to the Netherlands

Since Antonio Conte’s arrival in November last year, the 18-cap international has only made four top-flight starts, so it’s no shock to see that he wants to make a move to a club where he will more than likely be guaranteed regular playing time.

The former Inter boss has already started his squad rebuild ahead of the start of the new season, with goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini confirmed to be leaving Spurs.

Bergwijn has already previously admitted that he would at some point love to make the switch to a club back in his native Netherlands, so this could prove to be a deal written in the stars.

In other news… a reliable journalist has revealed that Spurs are in contact with a club over a potential move for one of their summer transfer targets.

Newcastle plot Dominic Calvert-Lewin bid

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their pursuit of Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph, the Magpies are planning a bid to sign the England centre-forward – who was valued at £60m in January – as Dan Ashworth looks to make his first moves as the Tyneside club’s sporting director.

However, the report claims that the Toffees do not want to sell to a direct Premier League rival, which could complicate negotiations.

Eddie Howe’s own Cristiano Ronaldo

The Magpies head coach can land his own Ronaldo by working with Ashworth to convince the England international to make the switch to St James’ Park in the coming months.

Richarlison previously compared the 25-year-old’s aerial ability to that of the Portuguese legend as he praised his Blues teammate. The Brazilian said: “He’s had a superb start to the season and without doubt deserved his England call-up. He must be a nightmare to play against and he has an incredible leap on him like Cristiano Ronaldo.”

John Ebbrell, the Everton academy coach who previously worked with Calvert-Lewin, has also lauded the striker’s ability in the air as “prodigious”. This is reflected in the 25-year-old’s statistics, as 19 of his 45 Premier League goals have come via his head, along with 20 right-footed strikes and five with his left foot.

In fact, he has eight more headed goals in the English top-flight than Ronaldo (11) has for United. This suggests that the Toffees striker may be a bigger threat in the air than the former Real Madrid sensation, and this means that he can be a target for Newcastle to try and pick out in the penalty box.

Howe would have a player he can trust to get on the end of crosses, and this means that he can build his team around the target man. The 44-year-old will know that he can deploy his wingers and full-backs with the aim of creating overloads out wide to deliver balls into the box, knowing that Calvert-Lewin has the quality to finish the chances they create.

The England international is a proven Premier League scorer, as shown by the aforementioned statistics, and he would be a long-term signing as he still has plenty of years left to give at the age of 25.

Hopefully the Tyneside club can now strike a deal for Calvert-Lewin and the Magpies will have their own version of Cristiano Ronaldo leaping high to win headers in the opposition penalty box next season…

Newcastle set to sell fringe players

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their plans for their fringe players in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

When asked about the futures of Dwight Gayle, Karl Darlow, Ciaran Clark and Matt Ritchie, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has revealed that the Magpies are expected to ship off some of their squad players ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The journalist has also teased that they may not be the only ones who depart St. James’ Park in the coming months as Eddie Howe wields his axe.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “There might be a surprise among that list, but I do expect there to be a bit of a clear out and then they’ll need to bring in some fresher players, because a lot of those guys have been there a long time.”

Supporters will be delighted

The Toon supporters will be delighted by this news as it suggests that the club will finally be axing a number of players who are not making positive contributions on the pitch at Premier League level.

Darlow, for example, endured a shocking start to the 2021/22 campaign as he covered for Martin Dubravka. He averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.47 as he let in 1.9 goals per game across eight appearances, making one error directly leading to a goal and giving away one penalty.

This suggests that he is not good enough to be the club’s number two as he struggled badly when he was pressed into action in 2021.

Gayle, meanwhile, played eight games in the entire league season and averaged six minutes per match, failing to score or register an assist in his time on the pitch. Steve Bruce and Howe opted against handing him regular game time, which is why now could be the right time for him to move on.

Clark was left out of the squad for the second half of the campaign after a dreadful six months leading up to January. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.29 – the lowest of any outfielder in the squad – as he made 13 appearances in the top flight.

Fans will, therefore, be delighted by the prospect of the Magpies cashing in on these players, among others, as they have shown that they are unlikely to make a significant impact for Howe in the Premier League next term.

Aston Villa: Luis Suarez move ruled out

There has been a development in Aston Villa’s pursuit of veteran striker, Luis Suarez…

What’s the word?

As per journalist Ashley Preece – speaking in a Q and A for Birmingham Mail – the Midlands outfit appear to have ended their interest in the Uruguayan ace, with the 35-year-old seemingly longer on his way to Villa Park.

Asked about any offers for the 132-cap gem, the club insider stated: “Suarez was on the cards but that ship, I’m told, has sailed now”.

Previous reports had suggested that the Atletico Madrid man – who is set to be a free agent upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the month – was ‘under consideration’ by the Premier League side, with Villa boss Steven Gerrard having appeared keen to reunite with his former Liverpool colleague.

Supporters gutted

There would undoubtedly have been sceptics who would have questioned the wisdom of signing an ageing star who is past his peak, yet there will also be sections of support that would have loved to see such a prolific marksman pull on a claret and blue jersey.

As it is, those supporters are set to be disappointed, with Suarez seemingly not set to be another marquee arrival this summer, with the club having already brought in four major additions in the current window.

For all his off-field controversies and his perhaps declining influence, the £7.2m-rated man remains arguably one of the most lethal strikers of his era, having been a consistent goalscoring threat over the last decade or so.

In 697 club games across all competitions in his career thus far, the £263k-per-week machine has scored a staggering 436 goals and provided a further 240 assists, while also plundering a further 68 strikes in 132 games at international level.

Having dazzled during a stunning stint at Anfield – where he scored 82 times and added 46 assists in 133 games after joining from Ajax in 2011 – the one-time Groningen man was arguably at his potent best in Barcelona, winning a plethora of major honours and registering 194 goals and 113 assists in just 281 games across all fronts.

An acrimonious exit from the Nou Camp in 2020 after six years in Catalonia was followed by another impressive spell in Madrid, with the 6 foot hotshot proving a point to his former club by netting 21 goals to help fire Diego Simeone’s side to the La Liga title in his debut campaign.

Even in the most recent season, the forward still chipped in with 11 league goals for the Spanish outfit – a tally only matched by Ollie Watkins among the Villa squad.

With doubts over the future of Danny Ings, Gerrard and co could no doubt have benefitted from the addition of a proven goalscorer and penalty-box poacher such as Suarez, even if it may have only been a brief relationship.

Liverpool: Paul Joyce drops huge transfer claim

Jurgen Klopp has delved into the transfer market fairly quickly following the end of another incredible season, which saw Liverpool lift two trophies and also come close to winning both the Premier League and Champions League.

Following this success, many would believe that the squad is as strong as ever and doesn’t need to be overhauled, but Klopp and his diligent recruitment tactics could give the Merseysiders a boost ahead of next season.

With Fabio Carvalho and a club record £85m deal for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez already confirmed, and Scottish youngster Calvin Ramsay close to being announced, it would seem that the club are in for a busy summer in the market.

However, according to Paul Joyce of The Times (via Anfield Watch), Liverpool won’t be signing any other players during the summer transfer window, which would make the Ramsey deal the last until January 2023 at least.

With three signings made already this summer, Klopp has already gotten his squad in a position where he can spend all of pre-season working with them and building towards another important campaign.

However, this may come a disappointment to some Reds fans, especially considering some of the players who have been linked with Liverpool recently.

Darwin’s a Red! Get your special edition Darwin Nunez tee here.

A deal for teenage Spanish sensation Gavi looked like it was on the cards, while a move for French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni eventually stalled and he moved to Real Madrid.

With the likes of Thiago (31), Jordan Henderson (32) and James Milner (36) all on the wrong side of 30, some might have thought that Klopp would have moved to refresh his midfield options, but the update from Joyce suggests that it is highly unlikely now.

There will likely be outgoings as the German looks to clear some deadwood from the wage budget, although Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern Munich isn’t one that the manager would have wanted. However, there’s no doubt that a fee which could reach £35m is good business for someone who is out of contract next year and wants to move.

With the transfer window only a week old, Klopp already looks all set and ready to go for next season as he aims for more glory.

However, it could well come as bad news for Liverpool supporters who might feel that the squad still needs strengthening in order to dethrone Manchester City as Premier League champions next year.

Leeds begin talks over Tyler Adams transfer

Leeds United are in talks over a potential transfer move to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams this summer.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites have been talking to the midfielder over a potential move to Elland Road.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The report also adds that the Yorkshire club see Adams as a suitable replacement for Kalvin Phillips, who is reportedly set to join Manchester City this summer.

After starting his career in America with the New York Red Bulls, the 23-year-old joined Leipzig back in the 2019 January transfer window.

Since then, the midfielder has made 102 appearances for the German club across all competitions.

In those appearances, he has won 80 tackles and made 104 blocks, 72 interceptions and 87 clearances, highlighting his defensive capabilities.

Taking into account how Phillips has won 87 tackles, made 103 blocks, 83 interceptions and 89 clearances in his 49 Premier League appearances for Leeds, it’s safe to say that the club will need a player, like Adams, with the defensive talent to come in and replace the Englishman.

A huge coup for Leeds

Back in November, it was reported that fellow Premier League club, Arsenal, were looking to launch a €40m (£34m) move for the American, showing that it’s not only Leeds that Adams has caught the attention of, once again highlighting how impressive he’s been for the German club.

In terms of a potential move to Leeds this summer, not only would it be a huge coup for Victor Orta given his age and talent, it could be easy for the Leipzig figure to settle in given how he’s played more games under Jesse Marsch (71), than any other coach he’s had at club level.

In fact, back when the pair were at Leipzig together, the Leeds boss had this to say about him.

He said: “He’s a special person, he’s a special personality, he’s a special talent and the ceiling for him is massive. Massive here in Leipzig and in the Bundesliga and beyond. So I’m proud to be connected with him and to have played a role in his development and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.”

This shows that Marsch would certainly know how to get the best out of the midfielder and potentially act as an extra incentive to get him to join the club.

Aston Villa can land Van Dijk 2.0 with Ake

Recent reports have seen Aston Villa linked with a move for Manchester City defender Nathan Ake, with the Dutchman set to be allowed to depart the Etihad this summer.

While the suggestion is that City boss Pep Guardiola is a ‘fan’ of the 27-year-old, the Premier League champions are said to be willing to cash in on the former Bournemouth defender if they receive a suitable offer in the current window.

The belief is that Villa are one of a number of top-flight clubs who are monitoring the situation, as the Midlands outfit are seemingly in the market for a new left-sided defender – with the 27-cap international offering that flexibility to feature at both centre-back and left-back.

Dubbed a “baller” by one source, the 5 foot 11 defensive rock only joined his current side on a £41m deal two years ago, although appears set for a hasty departure after two successive title triumphs.

With Sevilla’s Diego Carlos already in the door, it looks as if manager Steven Gerrard is keen to significantly bolster his backline this summer, amid doubts over the future of captain Tyrone Mings and teammate Ezri Konsa.

The hope for the Villa boss will be that Ake – who has been described as “special” by Marwan Ahmed – can have a similar impact to that of his compatriot Virgil van Dijk, with the 30-year-old having proven hugely influential since his £75m move to Liverpool back in January 2018 – a club, of course, close to Gerrard’s heart.

The younger man – who began his career at Chelsea – has previously admitted to trying to model his game around the Reds colossus, while he has also been the subject of praise from Van Dijk himself, who labelled him an “underrated” figure.

It will undoubtedly be near on impossible to replicate the success of a man who has been described as the “best centre-half of all time” by pundit Michael Owen and has swept a host of major honours during his time at Anfield in recent seasons, although the indications are that Ake can make just as strong an impact at Villa Park as his international colleague has done on Merseyside.

This is not simply wishful thinking, however, with the pair no doubt sharing a likeness in their playing style, with both men seemingly comfortable in possession and adept at playing the ball out from the back.

The statistics appear to corroborate that claim with Van Dijk ranking in the top 11% for pass completion and the top 3% for attempted passes among those in his position among Europe’s top five leagues, while the City man ranks in the top 7% and the top 2% for the same two metrics, albeit while having featured less frequently.

Both are also aerially dominant, with Ake winning 3.82 aerial duels per game compared to 4.02 per game for the former Southampton brute, while they both provide a threat in an attacking sense, having netted 15 and 17 goals, respectively, in their Premier League careers thus far.

As the case of Van Dijk has shown, it is never too late for a superstar to emerge, with the £49.5m-rated giant spending time at the likes of Groningen, Celtic and the Saints before truly being recognised as an elite force after joining Jurgen Klopp’s side.

While the Villans may not be considered a club of equal standing, that’s not to say that Ake can’t go on to help spark a dramatic improvement in the coming years and help push the ambitious club into European contention.

Who knows, Gerrard could have a Van Dijk of his own if he is to pluck the £100k-per-week star from Manchester this summer.
