Glasgow Rangers could be set for the biggest squad rebuild in years this summer, as Michael Beale aims to ship out the deadwood and underperformers that have contributed to a poor season.

There are seven first team players out of contract come the end of 2022/2023 and moving them on could free up some funds which could go towards potential new signings as Beale will look to assert his own authority on the squad.

One of those who is set to leave as it stands is Allan McGregor. The ‘keeper has played over 500 times for the club and has entered legend status, even being voted into the club’s Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Aged 41, it is time for the Ibrox side to move him on, and although he has been an excellent stalwart for the club, the previous few years haven’t been his finest and Beale must turn towards someone else to take on the mantle as the number one next term.

Robby McCrorie could be in with an excellent chance, however there is a youngster who is shining out on loan that could emerge as the next McGregor if he is nurtured correctly – Jay Hogarth.

Who is Rangers’ Jay Hogarth?

The 19-year-old is looking to follow in McGregor’s footsteps by gaining plenty as much experience out on loan during his formative years as he can.

The 41-year-old enjoyed a loan spell at Dunfermline which prepared him for the rigours of senior football and Hogarth has certainly impressed at Alloa Athletic this term.

Across 40 matches in all competitions for the Wasps, he has conceded 53 goals while keeping 11 clean sheets (all in the league) and the club have secured a playoff spot thanks to these wonderful performances.

Alloa boss Brian Rice praised Hogarth a few months ago, saying: “Jay has done brilliantly for us this season and has only missed one game.”

And it looks as though he has thrived at this level, gaining plenty of game time and could be set to take the next step up in 2023/2024.

The ‘keeper has also made progress through the youth groups at international level too, being called up for the Scotland U16s, U17s and U19s, although he has yet to make an appearance and the player has even been included in the Rangers’ matchday squad on several occasions, most notably for the tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, underlining how talented he is.

The youngster still has a long way to go, but if he continues this rich vein of form, there is no doubt the Gers may have another McGregor on their hands.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been slammed for his celebrations following Diogo Jota’s late winner on the weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

What did Jurgen Klopp do?

Sunday’s game at Anfield offered the fans 90 minutes they will never forget after a stunning start saw them take a 3-0 lead against the north London side.

However, the Lilywhites slowly worked their way back into the game and in dramatic fashion, former Everton player, Richarlison came off the bench to score an injury-time equaliser.

The Brazilian had just about put his shirt back on as Liverpool broke from the resulting kick-off to which Jota slammed the ball beyond Fraser Forster to seal the points.

Late euphoria clearly got the better of Klopp who immediately ran towards the fourth official to celebrate in his face as the Reds rose into fifth place of the table.

The German boss was shown a yellow card by Paul Tierney following the incident and seemingly injured his hamstring in the dramatic celebrations.

However, the incident did not go down well with beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys who was left furious with the actions of the Liverpool boss:

“He is box office, but there are occasions he strays beyond what’s acceptable, and today he’s done that.”

“If he’s more responsible than he was this afternoon, he will – as he has done – accept once again, he’s lost control. And that is a flaw in his character. And he cannot continue to do that.”

“But I would say that someone needs to have a word and say: ‘Look, come on. You can’t do that.'”

Did Klopp cross the line?

There is no denying the final minutes of the game on Sunday will have stirred the emotions for all involved at Liverpool and none more so than Klopp.

However, his actions did cross the line following the goal in the dying moments of the game and he could have certainly gone about it differently.

The German could have celebrated with his players and coaching staff, but he has gone out of his way to make a point towards the officials.

Following the game, the 55-year-old was quick to bring up the moment he was shown a yellow card by Paul Tierney when speaking to Sky Sports:

“My celebration towards the fourth official, I didn’t say any bad words or nothing unnecessary, which is fair. I got my punishment by pulling my hamstring. But what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not okay.”

If the PGMOL do decide to take further action against Klopp, the German will likely find it incredibly difficult to defend his celebration given the manner of which he approached the fourth official.

However, it will be interesting to see whether anything comes of his comments about what Tierney allegedly said to him when handing him the yellow card.

Both team arguably got away with red card offences during the game, so perhaps Klopp should have recognised Tierney’s questionable officiating and brought it up with him after the game when he would’ve had the chance behind the scenes.

The Portugal international is an academy graduate at the Primeira Liga outfit, where he’s worked his way up through the youth ranks to become a regular feature of Roger Schmidt’s first team, and his 40 senior appearances to date have caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp.

Football Transfers reports that the Reds have made the 19-year-old one of their top targets for the upcoming window and are hopeful that their existing connection to Benfica following their purchase of Darwin Nunez will help give them an advantage in their pursuit, not to mention that he also shares the same agent as the Uruguayan, alongside Diogo Jota and Fabinho.

The Merseyside outfit are claimed to be confident of winning the race for the centre-back despite him also attracting interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid, and they have already taken the next official step towards completing a deal.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have “sent scouts” to watch Silva live in action as they weigh up making an official approach ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Benfica’s homegrown talent isn’t out of contract for another four years, but his current terms include a £77m release clause, meaning that he could depart before then should that fee be paid by a potential suitor. The Red Devils are once again name-checked in the report as well as Manchester City, with the teenager’s club preparing for a “huge battle” at the end of the season.

Silva is still at a very young age and obviously doesn’t have experience in the Premier League, but having participated at the World Cup and in the Champions League, he could be a hugely promising signing for the long-term future at Liverpool.

Italian publication Il Mattino, via Sport Witness, reports that there is doubt surrounding whether Kim will remain at Napoli, although the expectation is that he will leave.
