Christian's five-for underpins Hurricanes' win

As the BBL group stage approaches its halfway point, both Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers arrived at Bellerive Oval with a win and two defeats under their belts; it shaped as a vital clash for both. And, thanks to a supreme bowling performance – led by an unlikely spearhead, Daniel Christian – it was Hobart Hurricanes who prevailed. Chasing an underpar 144, D’Arcy Short and Tim Paine put on 105, the highest opening stand of the competition so far, and the Hurricanes got home with eight wickets and 14 balls to spare.Earlier, Christian had taken 5 for 14 – which included three wickets in the final over of the innings – and recorded the second-best figures in the BBL’s history, eclipsing the 5 for 16 taken by Sean Abbott two nights ago.In that game, the Strikers did brilliantly to defend a low score against the Sixers having been invited to bat first, but they were unable to provide a repeat dose; as a result, their finals hopes hang by a thread. The two teams meet again at Adelaide Oval on Friday – another vital clash but, this time, the Hurricanes’ position looks rather stronger.Hurricanes believe in Christian
With Shaun Tait injured and Hamish Kingston dropped, Hurricanes’ bowling attack had a rather different look. There were three seam options – the excellent Stuart Broad, Simon Milenko, making his first appearance of the season, and Christian, who was yet to bowl in the competition. Regular spinners Clive Rose and Cameron Boyce were joined by debutant Beau Webster. Tim Paine opted to bowl first, but on a flat pitch and with one square boundary of around 54m, the Hurricanes were up against it.Broad set the tone brilliantly – and returned for three more fine overs, all in separate spells – but Christian immediately tied Strikers down. His two Powerplay overs cost three, then two, with the second picking up the wicket of Jono Dean. He returned in the 13th to dismiss Travis Head – courtesy a fine catch from Broad at long-on – then was entrusted with the final over. Two had fallen in the penultimate over, bowled by Broad, and Christian dismissed key man Brad Hodge, then Ben Laughlin next ball, and Liam O’Connor to end the innings. The story of Christian’s success – which included 16 dots in 24 balls – were the variations in pace and length, trying slow bouncers to swift yorkers and much in between.Of Hurricanes’ bowlers only Milenko disappointed, conceding 50, but he picked up the vital wickets of openers Ben Dunk – whose fine form continued with a quick 31 – and Jake Weatherald.Brad Hodge’s 55 was not enough for Strikers as Daniel Christian ran through the batsmen at the other end•Getty Images

Hodge’s lone hand
The Strikers’ bowlers could not bail their batsmen out this time. The swift loss of the top three threw away a fine start and it was left to Travis Head and Brad Hodge to rebuild. Head, who had been dropped on five, was out immediately after a big straight six, but Hodge batted through until the final over, smiting cleanly over the leg side. With Keiron Pollard struggling again and a long tail, five wickets fell in the final two overs, and 143 never looked enough.Strikers’ Paine is not Short
D’Arcy Short looks quite a find for Hurricanes. He enjoyed a dream debut in the win over Sixers, before a couple of quiet games. He was in outrageous form here, standing tall, swinging hard and watching the ball fly, putting on 105 with the team captain Paine. Short took Michael Neser’s first over (the 11th) for three huge sixes – the third of which went out of the ground to bring up the 100 – and 15 from Chris Jordan’s third.Paine was happy to play the role of amused onlooker, plodding along in Short’s slipstream and targeting the spin of Head and O’Connor. Eventually Billy Stanlake – who was outstanding again (bowling 16 dots), and the only bowler to trouble Short – had him caught behind by Dunk, the man he replaced at Hurricanes, and Paine was bowled by Head, but not before he passed Chris Lynn as the season’s leading scorer. Fortunately for them, George Bailey and Kumar Sangakkara picked up the baton to see Hurricanes over the line – with the Sri Lankan finding some form in the process.

Levy Set To Keep £192k-Per-Week Dynamo At Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur’s Heung-min Son will “want to help Tottenham bounce back” in the Premier League next season, believes transfer insider Dean Jones.

The winger has recently been linked with a move to the free-spending Saudi Pro League, but Jones gets the impression that he will want to remain in North London and help the club rediscover its form next year.

What is going on with Heung-min Son at Tottenham?

Reports from journalist Ben Jacobs revealed last week that the South Korean international is a transfer target for the Middle Eastern league and “legwork” is “already underway” on a potential deal.

The “world-class” winger, as described by former manager Antonio Conte, has struggled to find form this season, scoring just 10 goals in the league.

However, with just two years left on his current deal, any move away from N17 won’t be cheap, with Transfermarkt valuing the 6 foot forward at €60m (£51m).

Despite the clear connection between the Chuncheon-born player and Spurs faithful, a bumper pay packet could tempt him away from European football, especially since he will be turning 31 this year, and retirement could be on his mind.

With his current wages estimated to be £192k-per-week, the example of Karim Benzema earning a massive £200m a season might be just too alluring.

What did transfer insider Dean Jones say about the stories linking Heung-min Son with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur?

Jones gets the impression that despite the links away from the club, especially the ones to recent headline makers, the Saudi Pro League, Son will want to remain with the Lilywhites for at least another year.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Jones said: “I’d be surprised if he went there. He’s not the sort of player that’s just looking for a payday he’s been very committed to Tottenham.

“I think he’s going to continue to be important to them next season. I think he’ll want to help Tottenham bounce back from that disappointing season.”

Has Heung-min Son’s season really been as bad as everyone seems to think?

There is no denying that the South Korean’s season in the Premier League has been somewhat underwhelming compared to previous years.

However, you’d think from the way people talk about the player that he has been cataclysmically bad, which isn’t the case.

According to WhoScored, the former Leverkusen man has averaged a fairly respectable rating of 6.95 across his 33 games in the league.

His performances in Europe have also been fairly consistent, seeing him earn an average rating of 6.8 across eight games in the Champions League.

His underlying numbers were also better than expected.

According to FBref, who compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, Son was still within the top 16% for non-penalty expected goals per 90, despite his slender return in the league.

With all that considered, it might be fairer to view this season as simply a dip in form, one he should recover from.

Angelo Mathews takes two on return to bowling

The South Africa Invitational XI finished the day 88 runs behind Sri Lankans’ first innings score of 373 after Leus du Plooy struck 142

Andrew Fidel Fernando19-Dec-2016
ScorecardFile photo – Angelo Mathews returned from injury to finish with figures of 2 for 25•Getty ImagesLahiru Kumara, Sri Lanka’s 19-year-old seamer, boosted his chances of playing the first Test in Port Elizabeth by claiming three wickets on day two of the practice match at Potchefstroom. Dushmantha Chameera, meanwhile, went wicketless and proved expensive, conceding 68 runs from his 10 overs. The Sri Lankans had the South African Invitation XI 285 for 8 by stumps. The visitors had made 373 in the first innings.Kumara may not have been in the likely XI for the Port Elizabeth match after taking only three wickets across two Tests in Zimbabwe. However, team management may consider him on the basis of form. Among his three wickets was the scalp of Leus du Plooy, who top scored for the Invitation XI with 142 off 159 deliveries. He also claimed the scalps of allrounders Jason Smith and Bjorn Fortuin, with the latter caught behind.Dinesh Chandimal wore the gloves for the Sri Lankans, having now sufficiently recovered from the broken hand he sustained in September. Chandimal took three catches and effected a stumping off Dilruwan Perera’s bowling. The seam attack appears Sri Lanka’s shakiest discipline heading into the Tests, and, among the other frontline quicks, only Nuwan Pradeep was able to take a wicket, removing the highly-rated Aiden Markram to end the day with figures of 1 for 37.Suranga Lakmal also went wicketless, but it is Chameera’s form Sri Lanka will be most concerned about, as he is the only bowler capable of consistently bowling at speeds in excess of 140 kph. Before Sri Lanka left the island, Chameera had made a modest return to competitive cricket, taking 2 for 76 in a first-class game, though that had been on a spin-friendly pitch. The visitors will be buoyed, however, by a successful return to bowling from Angelo Mathews. Having been laid low by multiple leg injuries in recent months, Mathews took 2 for 15 from his seven overs. Dilruwan Perera also took two scalps for 22, but is unlikely to play in Port Elizabeth over Rangana Herath.Earlier in the day, Dhananjaya de Silva had managed to add only five runs to his overnight score, as he and Upul Tharanga were dismissed by seamer Duanne Olivier.Sri Lanka remain 88 runs ahead in the innings, with Tuesday being the final day of play.

44.72 km/h Usain Bolt Claims Marcus Rashford Is Quicker

Olympic champion Usain Bolt has claimed that Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford could actually beat him in a 20-yard sprint.

What's the latest on Manchester United and Marcus Rashford?

It was a pretty impressive season all told for the English forward. After all, not only did he help the Red Devils win the League Cup and secure Champions League football, he also netted 30 goals in all competitions – making him the first MUFC player since Robin van Persie in 2012/13 to hit that total.

So what does all this have to do with Bolt?

Well, the world’s fastest man – who holds the 100m, 200m and 4x100m records in both the Olympics and World Championships – is taking part in Soccer Aid this weekend and will captain the World XI who take on England at Old Trafford.

Consequently, he's been in the UK this week and has taken the time to talk about Man United, the club he supports, recently on talkSPORT.

During the interview, co-host Darren Bent asked him who would be quicker in a race between Bolt and Rashford, and the Jamaican came up with a bit of a surprising answer.

Bent said: “I read an article where you said that Rashford could beat you over 20 yards, is that correct?”

Bolt replied: “Yeah! Rashford is quick out the blocks, that is what he does.

“He has that burst of speed but after that, I told him, you could probably get me in 20 [yards].

“But after that, it is over!”

How fast can Usain Bolt run?

So there you have it, Rashford might be quicker over a shorter distance but if they were racing 100 yards, the Englishman probably wouldn't be able to keep up.

According to Speeds DB – a database that can tell you the top speed of anything – the Man Utd winger can run at 33.30 km/h (or 20.69 mp/h), while Bolt's top speed is 44.72 km/h (27.79 mp/h), which shows the real disparity between the two.

manchester-united-marcus-rashford-aston-villa-de-gea-ten-hag

Bolt also provided his thoughts on how the Red Devils have been playing of late, saying: “[The season] has been positive. I wish we won the FA Cup but it is just one of those things.

“We got one trophy and we are in the top four. The way we were looking for the past couple of seasons, this is just positive moment.

“I am just happy that we have a great coach that is really getting the team together. Hopefully, we can get some good players to add to the team and challenge for the league because it is going to be tough.”

Southampton: 27 y/o Machine Is Martin’s Dream First Summer Signing At St Mary’s

New Southampton manager Russell Martin is reportedly eyeing moves for Swansea City duo Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton this summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest on Matt Grimes to Southampton?

As Southampton and Martin prepare to attempt promotion at the first time of asking next season, they are plotting a move for two of his former stars, according to The Sun, with bids reportedly on the way.

Having worked under Martin at the Swansea.com Stadium last season, it comes as no surprise to see the new Saints boss attempting to reunite with the duo.

At the Welsh club last season, Martin guided the Swans to a 10th-place finish, three points from the play-off places in what was a frustrating campaign in the end.

Speaking on the potential transfer, Jones told GiveMeSport:

"I think both would be good signings. If they were to go and make those signings, it'd be interesting to see the timing of it. To make them the first signings would be a pretty big deal, taking the manager, and then following it up with that."

Can Matt Grimes can replace James Ward-Prowse?

Filling the boots of a player who makes free-kicks looks like penalties is no easy task unless David Beckham suddenly returned in his prime.

But, it is an arduous task that Southampton will have to attempt if club captain James Ward-Prowse does leave this summer. And that's where Grimes could come in.

Speaking about playing under Martin in February of last year, Grimes said:

"I'm really enjoying it [playing under Martin] – probably more than I have done in my whole career to be honest.

"I wouldn't have signed a new deal if I didn't believe in what the manager is doing and how he's going about getting the team playing in a certain way."

The "amazing" Swansea midfielder who has a "wand of a left foot" – in the eyes of former teammate Andre Ayew – may not have the world-class set-piece ability of Ward-Prowse, but that does not stop him from having a hand in goals, having recorded eight assists last season, whilst also finding the back of the net on one occasion.

Meanwhile, when compared to the current Saints captain, it's clear that Grimes is more actively in possession, making more passes per 90, with a better completion rate, according to FBref.

Defensively, Grimes stands out once more, too, with more tackles in the middle third and fewer challenges lost throughout the season. So, with that said, what you would lose in goals without Ward-Prowse, you would gain in stability with Grimes.

Ultimately, Grimes brings with him plenty of Championship experience, too.

And that could be the key to unlocking a place in, at the very least, the play-offs for Southampton next season.

The 27-year-old machine has experienced the heartbreak that England's second tier has to offer more times than he'll feel comfortable with, but that could provide a boost for those at St Mary's lacking in that same experience.

If the concern at Southampton is losing leadership, then Grimes ticks that box as well, having captained Swansea since the 2019/20 season.

The more you look at the potential deal, the more it makes sense for both Martin and Southampton, so he would surely be a dream first signing of the summer for the incoming 37-year-old.

Australian revival may be exaggerated, survey suggests

The Australian Sports Commission’s inaugural AusPlay survey, released on Thursday, contradicted Cricket Australia’s own assertion that the game is the No. 1 participation sport in the country

Compare and contrast: ASC’s survey found out that cricket contributed to only 562,669 combined senior and junior club sport participants as opposed to soccer’s tally of 1,086,986•Getty Images

Australian cricket has been warned it may not be the grassroots participation powerhouse it thinks it is, via the release of the most comprehensive national survey yet of sport down under. The Australian Sports Commission’s inaugural AusPlay survey, released on Thursday, contradicted Cricket Australia’s own assertion that the game is the No. 1 participation sport in the country, and by quite a margin. A more accurate description, according to the ASC’s figures, would be to place it in mid-table.While CA’s own Australian Cricket Census had stated that the game can point to 1.31 million total participants, the ASC survey delivered a far lower tally – 562,669 combined senior and junior club sport participants, placing cricket sixth out of the top 10 sports. It was well behind soccer’s 1,086,986 club participants, and also returned inferior figures to golf, AFL, netball and tennis. Ironically, the survey’s results were announced in a media event at the SCG on Thursday, with soccer’s top brass trumpeting the outcome. CA’s executive and directors were preoccupied with a board meeting at the game’s Jolimont headquarters.CA’s own participation figures are weighted to include the school-age Milo Into Cricket and Twenty20 Blast programs, with high female participation and increased engagement by diverse Australian communities cited as notable positives in recent years. However the CA chief executive James Sutherland has admitted previously that there is a need to ensure more junior participants graduate to club teams and a more formal relationship with the game. Interestingly, CA’s own club participation figure for this year was 454,657 – lower than the ASC’s.”It’s a lot about that experience and about creating a positive learning environment and a fun environment for kids to play the sport,” Sutherland had said in August when CA’s figures were released. “I think that’s where the T20 Blast has allowed kids to bridge between entry level programs and playing what some people might call ‘real cricket’.”We’ve seen success but also sustained participation through into the teenage years. Very pleasing in these results to see growth in that area for the first time in a couple of years.”Most major Australian sports have tended to downplay each other’s participation figures, arguing either that the numbers are too generously weighted towards junior programs or that the figures are gleaned through processes that are not sufficiently independent. The AusPlay survey has been designed to provide a more definitive picture.”The Australian Government’s investment in AusPlay means we will now have a deeper understanding of the sport and physical activity behaviours of our nation,” the ASC chairman John Wylie said. “The AusPlay survey will report every six months and provide up-to-date information about trends in sport and physical activity participation that will guide key decisions in this area.”Responding to the release of the survey, a CA spokesperson said: “The AusPlay survey fills a major gap in national sport and recreation data. We welcome the contribution this data will make to drive the ambition we share with the Government to increase participation.”We welcome that the survey again affirms Cricket’s place in the top tier of Australia’s leading participation sports and look forward to using the insights it provides to further grow Cricket participation.”However, it is important to note that school participation is presently omitted from the survey report. School participation is one of the key pillars of our participation framework and an area where Cricket has been enormously successful in recent years. We would welcome the inclusion of school participation in future AusPlay surveys to ensure it reflects an even broader participation footprint.”

Romano Shares Behind-Scenes Chelsea Transfer Claim

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was in agreement with the club not to overpay for Manuel Ugarte amid the competition from Paris Saint-Germain.

How much are PSG paying Ugarte?

The Blues endured a hugely underwhelming 2022/23 campaign which saw them finish in a disappointing 12th spot of the Premier League table.

But it is apparent Todd Boehly will not allow that to happen again with the American owner already putting plans in place to bring change ahead of next season.

Indeed, Pochettino has already been appointed as the new Chelsea manager and they have been involved in a transfer saga this early in the summer.

However, this was not a transfer saga which ended in Chelsea's favour after they bowed out of the race to sign the Uruguay midfielder, Ugarte, following the competition from the Ligue 1 champions.

Although the west London side had submitted a significant bid for the 22-year-old, they were forced to move away from the negotiations after PSG trumped their financial proposal to the player.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has provided an insight to the discussions behind the scenes at Staford Bridge amid their negotiations with the Sporting CP midfielder.

It is apparent the Blues were keen to strengthen their midfield with the addition of Ugarte, however, Pochettino was not in favour of overpaying for the 22-year-old with PSG offering a reported £2.6m more in annual salary:

"I wanted to tell you something behind the scenes about the situation that Chelsea had regarding Manuel Ugarte."

"I can tell you that Mauricio Pochettino was always involved in the conversation with the Chelsea board. Of course, Pochettino will be into the market this summer together with the board, and also Pochettino when Chelsea told him: 'We are not going to make another bid [for the] player because the idea is not to match Paris Saint-Germain's salary proposal for Ugarte'.

"Also the position of Mauricio Pochettino was like: 'Okay, Ugarte is a great player, but we don't want to enter into any crazy proposal to players, especially'."

Will Chelsea sign Moises Caicedo?

Now the Blues are expected to see N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic depart the club over the coming days, midfield reinforcement will be on the mind for Pochettino.

And with that in mind, it is believed the west London side are eyeing a potential move for the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

However, the Blues are not believed to be the only London side keen to potentially bring Caicedo to the capital with Arsenal all credited with interest.

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

But this is a deal which will not come on the cheap with the 21-year-old having signed a new deal on the south coast following the January transfer window.

As a result, it is suggested the Seagulls will be looking for a fee in the region of £80m – all in – for their midfielder.

The Ecuadorian is believed to be earning in the region of £60k-per-week at Brighton, so if he is to make a big-money move to Stamford Bridge it would be expected his wages will increase significantly like his former teammate, Alexis Mac Allister.

Can't return as representatives – Lodha to ousted officials

No ousted BCCI office bearer will be able to attend BCCI meetings as a state association representative or ICC meetings as a BCCI representative

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jan-20173:40

Ugra: Every BCCI move monitored by Lodha Committee

Other Lodha Committee clarifications

Does the nine-year disqualification hold true for members of a governing body, or managing or working committee, at a state association?
Unless the state association’s constitution defines those members as office bearers, the cap will not apply.
How do you calculate tenure if you are an office bearer at an Associate who has just become a Full Member?
The type of membership has no bearing on the eligibility of the office bearer. It would be calculated from the time the office bearer took office. But if the state association has never been a member of the BCCI, the tenure of the office bearer starts from the date of affiliation “unless he had already been the office bearer of another affiliated association.”

No ousted BCCI office bearer will be able to attend BCCI meetings as a state-association representative or ICC meetings as a BCCI representative after a fresh set of clarifications by the Lodha Committee has barred all disqualified office bearers from being “associated with cricket administration”.Ever since the Supreme Court made them ineligible with its January 2 order, many office bearers at various state associations have harboured hopes of retaining their position in some form. Last week, a Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) meeting had reportedly appointed its former president and BCCI’s last secretary Ajay Shirke as its representative at BCCI meetings. The Lodha Panel’s clarifications, however, have put paid to any hopes the disqualified officials might have harboured of coming back to the BCCI fold. In a response to frequently asked questions – by BCCI representatives, state associations and journalists – the Lodha Committee said: “In keeping with the spirit of the hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgment, a disqualified office bearer is no longer to be associated with cricket administration. He/she is disqualified from being a representative or nominee of the member association or the BCCI and cannot discharge any other role in or on behalf of the association or the BCCI. He/she cannot function within the association in any patron or advisory capacity not be a member of a committee or council.”The Lodha Committee also dealt with another key issue concerning elections of state associations. It said it would be “prudent” for state associations to await the appointment of the panel of administrators by the Supreme Court, which is likely to be finalised at the next hearing on January 19. This could have an impact on the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), which is scheduled to hold its elections on January 17. The Lodha Committee has not barred the HCA from holding elections should it be able to follow the committee’s norms.”While there is no bar to the holding of elections [subject to the orders of any court], if any election is held which is inconsistent with the committee’s report and the judgment of the Supreme Court, then the same will be treated as void and with no legal sanctity. This would also necessarily imply that such an election is supervised by an election officer as prescribed under the recommendations.”Among other clarifications, the committee has said officials in the middle of a term can stand for fresh elections but their current tenure will count towards the three-year cooling-off requirement. “This is to avoid any potential abuse,” the committee said. “For example, if there were no such bar, an office bearer could resign after two years and nine months, and then claim eligibility to stand at the next election three months later on the ground that a new term would commence.”The definition of an office bearer for the purpose of reforms will not be limited to president, secretary, vice-presidents, treasurer and joint-secretary. If a particular state association’s constitution has office bearers such an assistant secretary or a director or an assistant treasurer, such officials will also stand disqualified if they have spent a cumulative nine years in the said office. The Cricket Association of Bengal had reportedly sought the committee’s clarification as to whether its treasurer Biswarup Dey’s two years as assistant secretary would count towards his cumulative tenure in the association.”For example, in an association where the constitution refers to the assistant treasurer as an office bearer, if a person has occupied that post for three years and also been secretary for six years, he stands disqualified,” the clarification said.
