Lancashire threaten more frustration for champions

Lancashire have prospered on a bouncy Southport pitch and the outcome is likely to be more frustration for the defending champions, Middlesex

ScorecardTim Murtagh took six wickets but Lancashire are in charge•Getty ImagesSharp calls for singles piercing even the gusts of wind and the noisy bowing of the tall, full-leafed balsam poplars; almost every run greeted with rattles of applause from a huddled crowd, their absorption in the cricket seemingly absolute; sunlight, yes, but warmth confined to pockets of the ground which the locals knew and occupied early. If this game has not provided salad days from anyone’s Arthur Ransome summer, it has offered tense, fluctuating cricket and Lancashire are winning the match. That it should be so can be explained by the home side’s determination to prosper on a bouncy pitch and by the failure of the Middlesex attack to hit the tight lines and lengths that generally bring dividends on most surfaces. These contrasting qualities allowed Lancashire to build a lead of 129 runs, 87 of which were scored during a resourceful and uncomplicated ninth-wicket stand between Ryan McLaren and Tom Bailey. Then, as if clearly aware that the balance of the contest had shifted, Steven Croft’s bowlers fell upon the Middlesex top-order, no one more so than Stephen Parry, whose removal of Paul Stirling and John Simpson in the same over helped to leave the visitors languishing on 156 for 6. Their chances now rest on Dawid Malan and the tail.Parry’s two successes followed his removal of Stevie Eskinazi for 34 with a fine ball which turned and hit the top of the off stump. Operating from the Grosvenor Road End and on a pitch he knows well, the slow left-armer has taken 3 for 40 and is no doubt looking forward to the final day of this match. Combined with McLaren’s removal of Sam Robson for 42 and Saqib Mahmood’s yorking of James Franklin for nought, Parry’s successes mean that he and his colleagues may well inflict the first defeat on the champions in 21 four-day games, since they lost to Worcestershire in the epilogue of the 2015 season. It is by no means done yet, though. Dawid Malan was batting very capably at the end of the Sunday’s cricket and he will be accompanied by some of the best tail-end batsmen in the First Division. Middlesex’s lead is only 27 but Malan and James Harris have already added 46 runs for the seventh wicket.Yet the atmosphere of the evening session offered a substantial contrast to a morning in which any sort of Lancastrian advantage was nothing like assured. Indeed, the day had begun perfectly for Middlesex when a ball from Tim Murtagh, his side’s best bowler by several leagues, brushed the edge of Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s bat before the Guyanan had added to his overnight 32. In his next over, only the fourth of the session, Murtagh claimed the wicket of Dane Vilas, fencing loosely outside off stump and caught by Franklin at second slip. At that point Lancashire were still 44 runs in deficit and one imagines they would have settled for a lead of 29, never mind a hundred more.Batting remained perilous. No boundaries were struck for 12 overs until Jordan Clark cover- drove Murtagh to the tennis courts. Franklin rotated his trio of seamers in the full knowledge that they represented his best hope. Then Clark cover-drove Murtagh to the tennis courts and levied three more boundaries off the next two overs from Toby Roland-Jones. Umpire Steve O’Shaughnessy’s sun-hat blew off and bowled along the outfield like a paper plate. McLaren and Clark raised their fifty stand and took Lancashire into the lead. If the tension was not broken, the dynamic of the contest was changed. It was, though, hardly a day for seamers and some in the Middlesex attack struggled. If well-secured marquees were buckling in the wind off the Irish Sea and the trees were raising a tragic chorus in the gale, one could have some sympathy for any bowler seeking a moment of calm in which to begin his grooved run-up. There were times when Harris and Toby Roland-Jones looked like landlubbers on a tilting deck.Any such discomfort was seized upon by McLaren and Bailey. After Harris had removed Clark for a resolute 38 and Parry for 4 just before lunch, the ninth-wicket pair took the battle to Franklin’s seamers, milking them for 44 runs in eight overs with the new ball. McLaren played yet another well-judged innings but Bailey’s batting was something of a revelation as he clipped and drove Harris and Murtagh in the chill sunlight. He reached his fifty and secured Lancashire’s third bonus point by attempting to evade a bouncer from Harris but still edging it over third man for six. The following ball was also short and it disappeared over the fence guarding the railway line. Harris dismissed Bailey for a career-best 58 with his next delivery but it was a joyless triumph. A lead of 129 was probably beyond Glen Chapple’s fondest breakfast imaginings. And Lancashire’s lead immediately seemed even more decisive in the second over of Middlesex’s innings when Saqib Mahmood’s confident appeal for a catch at the wicket against Nick Gubbins was met with Steve O’Shaughnessy’s raised index finger. At once the batsman began shaking his head. He returned to the Trafalgar Road dug-out, an area well-acquainted with Anglo-Saxon oaths and protestations of innocence, pointing at an area above his elbow. Strangled in the first dig and sawn off in the second, Gubbins has hardly had a fine weekend at the seaside. One doubts that even a trip to the Miniature Railway or the Botanic Gardens will give him happy memories of Southport. In twenty-four hours’ time he may be joined in his discontent by ten other cricketers from Lord’s.

Sunderland: £16k-p/w ace "could go" in exit that would "hurt"

Sunderland should 'start looking at alternatives' to Jack Clarke in case the winger departs this summer amid interest from the Premier League, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Is Jack Clarke leaving Sunderland this window?

According to TEAMtalk, Clarke has attracted interest from Premier League trio Burnley, Crystal Palace and Brentford this window despite Sunderland being reluctant to lose his services.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany is said to be a big fan of the £16k-a-week ace and has made him one of his most sought-after targets that he would like to bring to Turf Moor.

iNews claim that Everton are also keen on bringing the former Tottenham Hotspur star to Goodison Park and Clarke's agent, former Republic of Ireland international Ian Harte, has spoken out amid rumours linking his client to various destinations over the last few months.

The 45-year-old stated: "I think every player, no matter what league you’re in, has a price and no matter what club you’re at, if a club is happy with it, they’ll take it.

Last term, Clarke was in fine form for Sunderland in spite of their failure to win promotion to the Premier League, registering 11 goals and 14 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

WhoScored take into account that Clarke showed his ability to score and create goals during the campaign, as the 22-year-old averaged 1.4 shots, 1.7 key passes and two dribbles per match in the Sky Bet Championship.

Nevertheless, speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Sunderland may have to cast their eyes towards identifying potential replacements for Clarke as his stock continues to rise in the English game.

Jones told FFC: "I mean, losing Jack Clarke is obviously going to hurt, but a time when he's got at least three Premier League teams chasing him, it's also a time to start facing up to the reality that he could go. His form last season was very good and while they try to keep him at the club up to now and giving everything they can to that, I think it's wise they start looking at alternatives."

What other events could occur at Sunderland in this transfer window?

Sunderland have already been active in the transfer market under Tony Mowbray and have wrapped up the signings of Jobe Bellingham, Jensen Seelt, Luis Semedo and Nectarios Triantis, as per Transfermarkt.

Despite this, more arrivals could be on their way to the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats look to once again make a fist of fighting for promotion to the English top flight.

Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop is a target for Sunderland; however, they saw a loan bid rejected for the 23-year-old earlier this month, according to The Athletic.

Fotbol STHLM report that Djurgardens youngster Gideon Granstrom has gone on trial on Wearside as he bids to win a deal at the club amid further interest from Norwich City in his services.

His father spoke to the Swedish outlet about the arrangement, stating: "He went there earlier this week and is doing his first training session today. He stays about ten days in total. They will spend one week on this tour, starting in Norwich, then finishing with three days at Sunderland. It's open. From our side, we focus on the sporting, it is instructive to come there and meet a different football culture and different way of playing."

In the next few weeks, it will become clearer whether Sunderland have any more tricks up their sleeve in the market as they prepare for the 2023/24 campaign to get underway from a competitive standpoint.

West Ham In The Mix To Sign 24-Year-Old Japan Star This Summer

West Ham are reportedly battling with Fulham for the signing of Fortuna Dusseldorf midfielder Ao Tanaka this summer, according to a fresh update.

Who is Ao Tanaka?

The 24-year-old is currently plying his trade with Dusseldorf in Germany, making 39 starts in the Bundesliga 2 over the past two seasons, shining at the heart of his side's midfield. He has also won 19 caps at international level for Japan, scoring three goals in that time and also appearing three times at the 2022 World Cup, starting two of his country's matches.

It could be that Tanaka is interested in a move away from Dusseldorf during the current transfer window, however, even though his current deal there doesn't expire until the end of the 2024/25 season. A move to a top league is likely to appeal, and it looks as though a switch to the Premier League could potentially be on the cards in the coming weeks.

That's where West Ham come into play, as David Moyes aims to conduct some strong transfer business before the start of the 2023/24 campaign, looking to build on their fantastic UEFA Europa Conference League success last term.

Would West Ham sign Ao Tanaka this summer?

According to Rheinische Post [via Sport Witness], the Hammers are in the conversation to sign Tanaka this summer, but they won't have a clear path when it comes to snapping him up. Fulham are also credited with interest, with West Ham's London rivals also eyeing squad reinforcements with the new Premier League season looming.

It is reportedly "no secret" that Dusseldorf expect to lose the Japan international in the near future because he himself "wants to leave" in the current window. Only €3m (£2.5m) would supposedly be required to prise him away from his current team, making it a cheap piece of business.

Tanaka wouldn't necessarily be a marquee signing by West Ham in the summer, considering he isn't exactly a household name, but he could be a shrewd addition who help fill some of the void left by Declan Rice, assuming his big-money move to Arsenal is eventually announced sooner rather than later.

He has proven himself at a World Cup, averaging one tackle and aerial duel win apiece as last year's tournament, and he is at a good age to come in and bolster the Hammers' squad options, potentially maturing as a player over time and also excelling alongside better players to the ones at Dusseldorf.

In fact, Tanaka was even handed the Player of the Match award after Japan's unforgettable 2-1 victory over Spain at the World Cup, in which he score the winning goal and generally excelled throughout – this should excite West Ham fans who could otherwise potentially feel underwhelmed about the east Londoners signing him.

Granted, signing him alone won't help make up for the incoming huge loss of Rice, who has been such a dominant performer in the middle of the park over the years, but it is a case of finding a number of quality new players in that area, in order to fully make up for his exit.

Celtic: Rodgers Eyeing Swoop To Sign "Dominant" 6 ft 5 Colossus

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to bolster their defensive options ahead of the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign…

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

According to the Scottish Daily Mail's Stephen McGowan, Brendan Rodgers is keen on a deal to sign Volendam central defender Xavier Mbuyamba during the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports reported in May that the Hoops were keeping tabs on the Dutch colossus.

This suggests that the interest has been carried on by the Northern Irish tactician in spite of Ange Postecoglou's departure.

McGowan's report also notes that Turkish side Fenerbahce are interested in signing Israel international Liel Abada, which would be another blow to the club's wide options after Jota's permanent move to Al Ittihad.

How good is Xavier Mbuyamba?

The jury is still out on just how good the former Chelsea academy prospect is as the 6 foot 5 titan has only played one full season at senior level.

However, his debut campaign with Volendam was impressive and suggests that the potential is there for him to develop into an excellent option at the back for Celtic.

Mbuyamba's arrival at Paradise would be terrible news for current Hoops defender Stephen Welsh, as it was reported by Football Insider in May that the club would be willing to ditch him this summer if they managed to sign a replacement.

Celtic defender Stephen Welsh.

The 23-year-old enforcer has only made 14 Premiership appearances over the course of the last two seasons, as he has struggled to nail down a regular place in the side ahead of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt.

Celtic seemingly do not believe that the Scottish defender has the potential to develop into a first-choice option, given their willingness to sell him, and Mbuyamba could now come in to take his place.

The towering Dutchman would arrive with time on his side to improve as he gains more experience, given that the ex-Barcelona gem does not turn 22 until December.

He could learn from Carter-Vickers (25) and Starfelt (28) before breaking into the team in the future, as his form for Volendam last season suggests that the quality is there for him to be a superb defender for Rodgers.

Mbuyamba averaged more interceptions (1.2), tackles (2.3), and clearances (5.4) during the Eredivisie campaign than Welsh did in the Premiership, whilst no Celtic player in any position averaged more in each of those respective defensive statistics.

Therefore, the impressive youngster could make a greater impact in defence in comparison to the former Scotland U21 international, due to his ability to read the game and cut out opposition attacks more frequently.

The Volendam star's five-goal haul was also two more league goals than any Hoops centre-back managed, which suggests that he could provide Rodgers with an upgraded aerial threat from set-pieces.

At the age of 21, Mbuyamba, who was hailed as "dominant" by scout Jacek Kulig, would be able to come in as a backup option initially and be afforded the time to adjust to Scottish football before kicking on.

That is another reason why he could be a fantastic signing to replace Welsh, who could be on his way out of Parkhead if another central defender comes through the door to further restrict his potential playing time.

Can change of scenery do West Indies good?

Match FactsFriday, June 30, 2017
Start time 0900 local (1300 GMT)Big PictureIndia came to the Caribbean after yielding their Champions Trophy crown but they haven’t taken long to find their happy place again. They scored 300-plus in less than 50 overs in their first completed match since the defeat to Pakistan, bringing the cricket world back to the status quo.If West Indies are to shake things up and more importantly stay alive in the series, they’ll have to find a way past India’s strongest suit: a top order that, by now, must be making runs as they sleepwalk. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli are racking them up with such greed that their team-mates from Nos 4 might have forgotten how it feels to be out in the middle. Over the last six games, only twice has a middle-order batsman been needed to face even 40 balls. Both came in losing causes. If this trend is to be exploited though, West Indies have to do something India have, recently, been excellent at: maximising their strength. Jason Holder has under his charge a set of bowlers who are not typically threatening, but at this level, they should at least maintain a constricting line and length for as much as the 50 overs as possible. The two uncapped players they have added to the squad – Kyle Hope and Sunil Ambris – are batsmen so clearly this is the best bowling attack they have and perhaps Antigua will bring them better luck.2:37

I learn from my failures – Dhawan

Form guideWest Indies LWLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India WLWWLIn the spotlightSkill-wise, there is very little going against Devendra Bishoo. He is a wristspinner – an essential commodity in ODIs now – but his consistency remains a problem. Good batsmen almost mark him down for approximately one short ball an over and milk him without too much trouble. If Bishoo can rectify this, he could be what West Indies need – a wicket-taker.He has always been a very good cutter of the ball, but now, when he plays the pull, and the hook, the change in Shikhar Dhawan is striking. He is no longer hurried into the shot, the swivel on the back foot is smooth, and the shot itself appears effortless – signs that he is picking the length early and trusting his technique, which he says has been calibrated to play the ball a little later and therefore a lot closer to his body. With 500 runs in his last nine innings, the adjustments are bringing rewards.Team newsConsidering West Indies dropped Kieran Powell and Jonathan Carter, who have played both ODIs of this series, and replaced them with Kyle Hope and Sunil Ambris, the two uncapped batsmen might just be looking at instant debuts.West Indies (probable): 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Kyle Hope, 3 Shai Hope (wk), 4 Jason Mohammed, 5 Roston Chase, 6 Jason Holder (capt), 7 Rovman Powell/ Sunil Ambris, 8 Ashley Nurse, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Devendra Bishoo, 11 Miguel Cummins,India tend to avoid experimenting in ODIs, but considering the potential of Rishabh Pant, who has hit a first-class triple-hundred at nearly run-a-ball, they may make an exception.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Umesh YadavPitch and conditionsIn 15 matches at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium in North Sound, the average run-rate batting first has been 5.05. That roughly translates to an average total of 252. And barring the odd brief shower, the weather is expected to hold up well.Stats and trivia The last time West Indies won an ODI series against a top-eight team was in 2012, when they beat New Zealand 4-1. Since then, they’ve been beaten 16 times. India’s top-three have averaged 61.5 over the last two years. That’s 15 points higher than their nearest rivals South Africa

Can confident Zimbabwe topple Chandimal's Sri Lanka?

Match facts

July 14-18, 2017
Start time 1000 local (0430 GMT)

Big picture

When last these teams met, Zimbabwe almost survived in the first game, but were rolled over in the second, taking Sri Lanka’s Test-match winning streak to five. The world has changed dramatically since. Heading into this match at Khettarama, the hosts have a new captain, and new-ish head coach, and a startling dearth of confidence. As was the case with the ODI series, this spells opportunity for Zimbabwe.Opportunity, because Sri Lanka will have only three days to recover from one of the most dispiriting losses in their recent history. Opportunity, because Zimbabwe, though they haven’t played Tests since last November, have batsmen in form, a better set of fielders (on recent evidence), and are clearly the happier outfit in this tour. The real test will be for Zimbabwe’s bowlers. Though they triumphed in the ODIs, they took only 24 wickets compared to Sri Lanka’s 35, and never bowled the opposition out. Also, in last year’s Tests in Harare, Sri Lanka had scored 500 in each first innings, and controlled both matches from virtually the first day onwards. Graeme Cremer and his cohort of allrounders offer Zimbabwe a serviceable spin-bowling contingent, but the fast bowlers such as Tendai Chatara may have to contribute with early wickets – and he often did in the ODIs – to give their side a chance. In addition to adjusting to a new leader, Sri Lanka may also do well to rediscover the old, infectious joy that once defined their cricket, but has been in short supply in recent months. That SLC thought this would be a walkover tour is reflected in the packed schedule – three ODIs and a Test will be played in the space of 13 days. The reality is that Sri Lanka find themselves scrambling to avoid slipping on another banana skin, while Zimbabwe smell their first potential upset since 2013, when they defeated Pakistan at home.

Form guide

Sri Lanka LWLLL (completed matches, most recent first)
Zimbabwe LLLLThe triumph in the one-day series has put Zimbabwe in a good frame of mind•AFP

In the spotlight

While in ODIs, Dinesh Chandimal‘s form has been patchy, in Tests, he has been a markedly improved batsman. While once a flasher only capable of playing at a rapid tempo, Chandimal’s two most-recent hundreds – against Australia at the SSC and against Bangladesh at P Sara – were hard fought and wrung out of difficult circumstances. It is partly that new determination that has seen him promoted to the captaincy now, and a quality he will require plenty of in this Test, as he attempts to inspire a team in significant flux.On the opposite side, stands Graeme Cremer who in the ODIs made confident statements before the deciding game, then backed it up with brave performances with bat and ball. Whether Zimbabwe will have a realistic chance of victory at Khettarama may pivot upon the quality of his legspin. The pitch may provide assistance to the quicks to begin with, but usually holds its greatest rewards for the slow bowlers. Cremer has also had success against Sri Lanka in Tests, taking 11 wickets in that series last year.

Team news

Sri Lanka have decisions to make on the bowling front. Rangana Herath is certain to play, and Suranga Lakmal is likely. Lahiru Kumara may be the preferred second seamer, but it is unclear whether they will favour the experience of Dilruwan Perera for the role of second spinner, or if they will go with the more aggressive Lakshan Sandakan.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (capt.), 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Asela Gunaratne, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Lahiru KumaraZimbabwe are likely to choose Chatara in their attack, given his success in the ODIs. Sikandar Raza may also earn a place in the XI on form. Perhaps to Sri Lanka’s relief, Solomon Mire is not in the Test side. Regis Chakabva may partner Hamilton Masakadza at the top of the order, and it is possible Tarisai Musakanda will debut, at No. 3.Zimbabwe (possible): 1 Regis Chakabva, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Tarisai Musakanda, 4 Craig Ervine, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Sikandar Raza, 7 Malcolm Waller, 8 Peter Moor (wk), 9 Graeme Cremer (capt.), 10 Tendai Chatara, 11 Donald Tiripano

Pitch and conditions

There was a light cover of grass on the pitch on the eve of the match, which suggests there will be assistance for the seamers early on. However, rare is the Khettarama surface that doesn’t become spin-friendly eventually. There have been periodic showers in Colombo over the past week, and more of the same is expected during the Test.

Stats and trivia

  • Dinesh Chandimal becomes Sri Lanka’s 15th Test captain. In the past, he has led Sri Lanka’s limited-overs teams, as well as captaining the Under-19 side in his senior school year.
  • This is Zimbabwe’s first Test in Sri Lanka since January 2002. In 17 Tests between the two sides, Zimbabwe have lost 12 without ever winning a game.
  • This is Zimbabwe’s first away Test since 2014, when they had lost 0-2 in Bangladesh.

Quotes

“More than anything, we have the self-belief that we can actually push Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, which is big for us. We have the potential to score the runs as well as take wickets. Confidence is what we will take into the Test match most.””As a player and a captain I will sacrifice my time and my effort to make sure Sri Lanka reclaims a good place in world cricket. I need a little time for that. I am hopeful that with the players that I have, I can take Sri Lankan cricket to where it used to be.”

Reporter Drops Update On Levi Colwill to Liverpool

Liverpool see Levi Colwill as their "top target" this window and are pushing for the deal as they can sense "blood in the water" at Chelsea, claims transfer journalist Graham Bailey.

Is Levi Colwill joining Liverpool?

Liverpool have had a brilliant transfer window so far this summer, with the club almost completely overhauling their midfield with the signings of World Cup-winning Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion and the Hungarian international Dominik Szoboslai from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

Alexis Mac Allister Brighton Argentina

With those deals only costing the Merseysiders an estimated £95m combined, the club look set to continue their summer spending with Chelsea's exciting young defender Colwill, their new top target.

The Southampton-born-gem spent last season on loan with Premier League high-flyers Brighton, where he enjoyed his breakout top-flight campaign under the progressive tutelage of Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi.

His brilliant performances for the Seagulls saw him earn a call-up to England's under-21s for the European Championships this summer, a competition he helped them win without conceding a single goal along the way.

Unsurprisingly, this positive momentum has turned the heads of prospective buyers, with his loan side making a £30m offer for the 6 foot 2 prospect, an offer that the Pensioners immediately rejected.

Despite Chelsea's insistence that their young star isn't for sale, the lack of guaranteed game time is the number one concern for the player and why he has yet to put pen to paper on a new extended deal.

This inability for the Blues and Colwill to reconcile his desire for first-team football and their reluctance to guarantee it has given the Reds confidence that they can snatch the "outrageous" youngster away from their rivals, per Graham Bailey.

He explained the situation on the Talking Transfers podcast:

"There's something in this. Liverpool are pushing hard for this, there's blood in the water, and they can really sense that.

"I think Liverpool, he is their top target now. There is a belief at Anfield that they could get him."

Who is leaving Liverpool this summer?

Whilst there is a lot of excitement around the potential incomings at Liverpool this summer, there are also quite a few significant players that could be departing as well.

It could be the end of the road for club captain Jordan Henderson this summer as he has reportedly accepted a colossal offer worth £700,000-a-week from Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq, per TalkSPORT.

The move would see him link up with old Reds teammate and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, the side's new manager.

Following the skipper to the Middle East could potentially be Brazillian midfielder Fabinho, with the Guardian reporting that the player's camp have been in conversation with Saudi side Al-Ittihad over a move, but no discussions have been held between the two clubs as of yet.

Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara is another senior player that could be on the way out, as Spanish outlet SPORT report that while Liverpool aren't actively looking to sell the 32-year-old, they would be willing to part ways with him should a reasonable offer be made, and with Xavi reportedly interested in the service of the former Bayern Munich man, that could be on the table.

Leeds Transfer News; Karl Darlow Set For Medical

Leeds United target Karl Darlow is set to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed £400,000 move to Elland Road, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reports.

Are Leeds signing Karl Darlow?

New owners the 49ers Enterprises and manager Daniel Farke are making preparations ahead of the new Championship campaign. Ethan Ampadu is the only player the club have signed so far, with the versatile midfielder arriving on a permanent deal from Chelsea.

The club’s focus since has been on signing a new shot-stopper ahead of their season opener with Cardiff City next Sunday, with Darlow a player who has been admired by the Whites.

It looked as if Premier League side Bournemouth were close to signing the 32-year-old ahead of the Whites, however, the Cherries have since struck an agreement to land Andrei Radu on a season-long loan from Inter Milan.

That has opened the door for Leeds to make their move for Darlow, and it appears as if a transfer is now gathering real pace. Sky Sports reporter Downie took to Twitter in the last 24 hours to share a further update regarding Darlow.

It has been confirmed by Eddie Howe that the shot-stopper will head to Yorkshire for a medical. And the 49ers have clearly worked their magic, with a deal believed to be in the region of just £400,000, considerably less than his previously reported £5m price tag.

“Eddie Howe confirms Karl Darlow will travel to Leeds for a medical tomorrow. Understand the fee is in the region of £400k.”

Who is Karl Darlow?

Darlow came through the youth system at Nottingham Forest but has been with Newcastle since 2014. During that time, the Englishman has turned out on 100 occasions for the Magpies, helping them win the Championship back in 2017.

He actually spent the second half of the previous campaign out on loan with Hull City, and in total, Darlow has kept 48 clean sheets in 152 Championship appearances throughout his career.

Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles has praised Darlow, labelling him as “fantastic” who has “everything you’d want” from a keeper.

"Since he’s been at Newcastle, I don’t think he’s put a foot wrong. Every time he’s been asked, he’s played well. In the Championship season, he played the majority of the games and we got promotion.

"He’s been patient. He’s a great professional. He’s been fantastic. That’s what I know from Karl. He’s a great goalkeeper. His shot-stopping, crosses, everything you’d want from your goalkeeper."

His second-tier experience could be just what is required at Elland Road, and as per Joe Donnouhue, over a 46-game season, Darlow averages just under 15 clean sheets in the second-tier.

A similar display for Leeds could go a long way in helping them earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first opportunity, and tightening up at the back is crucial after the club conceded a total of 157 goals over the past two top-flight campaigns.

A £400,000 fee is also good to see, especially given his £5m asking price earlier in the summer, and it’ll be interesting to see who Leeds decide to go after next.
