Newcastle could repeat Joelinton masterclass by signing PL "pressing machine"

Before December, Eddie Howe's worst-ever period at Newcastle United came right at the beginning of his tenure, as his side picked up merely five points from a possible 21 in his first seven matches in the St. James' dugout.

However, after spending around £400m throughout his spell in charge, the Magpies have now lost seven of their last eight matches in all competitions and Monday's defeat at Anfield against Premier League leaders Liverpool piled further pressure on the manager.

Nevertheless, with the January window now open, Howe could add to his squad in an attempt to stop the rot and has reportedly set his sights on one player from a league rival.

Newcastle United transfer news – Andrey Santos

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United have enquired to Chelsea about midfielder Andrey Santos, who is currently out on loan at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. It was previously reported that Chelsea were unhappy with the Brazilian's lack of minutes at the City Ground and were set to recall him from his loan this month, with the Magpies keen to bring him to the club.

Andrey Santos Chelsea

After completing his move to Stamford Bridge last year for £18m from Vasco da Gama, Santos was sent out on loan to the Tricky Trees during the summer to acclimatise to English football. However, the youngster has played merely 97 minutes this season for Forest, including just seven minutes in the Premier League. Santos' last appearance for his loan club came away at Anfield back in October.

Now, the 19-year-old could be recalled from his disappointing stint in Nottinghamshire and may be an astute signing for Newcastle, particularly on loan as Howe recently admitted that FFP will be a constraint for the side this winter, meaning dipping into the loan market could be the way forward.

Andrey Santos' stats comparison vs Sean Longstaff

Newcastle's midfield has been a problem area for the club this season. This department has been left quite bare in recent months due to injuries and suspensions to the likes of Joelinton and Sandro Tonali, leaving Howe hamstrung with his decision to constantly deploy Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park. The boyhood Geordie has made 24 appearances in all competitions already this term.

kalvin-phillips-sean-longstaff-newcastle-opinion

The problem is, since Tonali was handed a season-ending suspension early into the campaign, Howe has been forced to keep Bruno Guimaraes in a deeper position as Newcastle's holding midfielder which has caused the creative and goalscoring burden to fall onto Longstaff. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old has managed merely five goal contributions this season, including three goals and two assists.

While Santos has yet to register an assist in his professional career, the 5 foot 11 teenager has still outscored Longstaff and was outperforming the latter's output from this term in several key metrics from his time with Vasco da Gama, particularly from a defensive standpoint.

While Longstaff has proven himself to be more productive in the attacking phase, Santos' defensive nous would be more beneficial for Howe's team, who conceded a Premier League record 7.27 xG against Liverpool on Monday, to be more resilient out of possession, hence why football scout Jacek Kulig once described Santos as a "pressing machine".

Having Guimaraes as the deep-lying playmaker, supported by Santos and Joelinton could be more advantageous for Newcastle right now.

Compared to all other number '8s' in Europe's top-five leagues this season, Joelinton ranks in the top 20% for tackles won per 90, the top 15% for interceptions per 90 and the top 17% for blocks per 90, having been converted into a box-to-box midfielder by Howe back in 2021.

Howe could potentially repeat this masterclass by signing another Brazilian gem – Santos – on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Suryakumar Yadav, spinners put Mumbai Indians in fifth IPL final

On a turning pitch, the spinners restricted CSK to a below-par 131 before Suryakumar’s 71 not out gave Mumbai their sixth straight win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy07-May-20193:40

Vettori: The main reason to pick Jayant was to get Raina out

Mumbai Indians have beaten Chennai Super Kings for the third time in three meetings this season. They’ve beaten Super Kings on their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, for the sixth straight time in all competitions.Let’s put that record in context. Between them, all the other IPL teams, put together, have come here 49 times and picked up ten wins. The latest chapter in Mumbai’s psychological stranglehold over Super Kings came via a comfortable six-wicket win on a pitch affording sharp turn throughout. Both teams went in with three spinners – a legspinner, and offspinner and a left-arm orthodox spinner each – and Mumbai’s trio outperformed Super Kings’ on the day. While the pitch wasn’t straightforward to bat on, 131 seemed a below-par total considering Super Kings only lost four wickets, and an unbeaten 71 from Suryakumar Yadav steered Mumbai home with nine balls remaining.Super Kings’ Powerplay woes continueBoth captains said at the toss that they wanted to bat first, and the coin fell in MS Dhoni’s favour. Super Kings came into the match with the worst Powerplay average (20.38) and scoring rate (6.30 per over) of any team this season, and they proceeded to slip up once again.Rahul Chahar is pumped after dismissing M Vijay•BCCIMumbai used all three of their spinners in the Powerplay, bowling them for four out of six overs, and they took out Super Kings’ top three. Faf du Plessis picked out backward point with a cut, while Suresh Raina and Shane Watson fell trying to hit against the turn when the length wasn’t in their favour; on this pitch, it was only really a percentage shot if the batsman got to the pitch of the ball or if it was a rank long-hop.Watson fell off the last ball of the Powerplay, and Super Kings were 32 for 3.Did Super Kings go too far into their shell?By the end of the 12th over, the right-handed fourth-wicket pair of M Vijay – brought in for the injured Kedar Jadhav – and Ambati Rayudu had put on 33 in 36 balls. They took no real risks even against the seamers or the offspinner Jayant Yadav, who between them bowled four of those six overs and conceded exactly a run a ball.Vijay was out first ball of the 13th over, stumped attempting to step out and hit Rahul Chahar inside-out. That brought Dhoni to the crease.Dhoni and Rayudu ramped up the intent a little, hitting Jayant for a six each and then taking eight off the 15th over, bowled by Hardik Pandya. But they weren’t prepared to go after the left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya or the legspinner Chahar, and they carefully played out the 16th and 17th overs, scoring a total of eight runs off them. By that point, Super Kings were 99 for 4.The last three overs went for 32 – decent, but not the explosion Super Kings may have hoped for – with Dhoni launching successive sixes off Lasith Malinga in the 19th but Jasprit Bumrah proving harder to hit either side of it.Suryakumar Yadav whips one off his pads•BCCITwo early wicketsThat left Mumbai 132 to get. Super Kings sent back both their openers by the fourth over, leaving them at 21 for 2. Deepak Chahar got Rohit Sharma lbw with an outswinger that beat his attempted leg-side flick, and Harbhajan Singh had Quinton de Kock reaching for the ball and caught at wide long-off.Suryakumar sparklesReaching for the ball had been a key element of how Mumbai’s spinners kept Super Kings quiet – their line had been outside off stump for most part, and their length short of the driving arc. At the end of the match, Dhoni reasoned that his spinners hadn’t managed to emulate them, and had bowled too full a length or too straight a line too often. This allowed the Mumbai batsmen to pick up key boundaries while hitting against the turn. Ishan Kishan launched Harbhajan Singh over the midwicket boundary to end the Powerplay, and Suryakumar Yadav whipped and drove Imran Tahir for successive boundaries through midwicket in the 11th over. Before all that, both batsmen had enjoyed moments of luck. Suryakumar was dropped by a diving Vijay at mid-on on 11, off Deepak Chahar, and Kishan edged Harbhajan wide of slip on 2.Suryakumar made Super Kings pay for the miss, using his feet well to get to the pitch of the ball as often as he could, or waiting on the back foot to use the pace of the bowler. Ravindra Jadeja and Tahir are among the quicker spinners in world cricket, and Suryakumar steered both of them deftly to the third man boundary in the 13th and 14th overs, the second of those shots bringing up his fifty, off 37 balls.Too little, too lateThat left Mumbai needing 32 off 40 balls. It proved a pretty straightforward task, even though Tahir took wickets off the last two balls of the 14th over. First he bowled Kishan, who ended up in an awkward position after stepping out too early, and then he had Krunal Pandya caught and bowled to bring up 300 T20 wickets.Super Kings nearly had another wicket next ball, when Suryakumar stretched out to defend Jadeja and edged him between keeper and first slip. But Shane Watson, diving to his left, couldn’t hold on despite getting a hand to the ball. That was pretty much it, and Suryakumar and Hardik steered Mumbai home with an unbroken partnership of 31 in 27 balls.

Bad news for Scott Wright as Rangers made approach for 21 y/o "revelation"

Glasgow Rangers signed Fabio Silva from Wolverhampton Wanderers at the start of the month and are now eyeing up another forward to join him at Ibrox during the January transfer window…

Rangers made approach for young winger

According to Evening Standard reporter Dom Smith, the Light Blues are one of a number of clubs eyeing up a swoop to sign Boca Juniors winger Luca Langoni.

The Light Blues have already made an approach to sign the 21-year-old dynamo as Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen look to bolster the playing squad before the end of the window.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Smith added that OGC Nice and Seville have also approached Boca over a possible deal for the talented youngster, which means that the Gers face plenty of competition for his signature.

Rangers' interest in Langoni could be particularly bad news for Scott Wright and his future at Ibrox, as the former Aberdeen forward could be sent further down the pecking order.

Scott Wright's struggles at Rangers

The Scottish winger, who came close to a move to Turkish side Pendikspor last summer before deciding to remain with the Gers, is yet to prove himself to be a reliable attacking option for the club.

Wright featured in 34 competitive matches for the Light Blues under Michael Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst combined during the 2022/23 campaign and contributed with zero goals and two assists.

The 26-year-old forward has followed that up with one goal and zero assists in 15 outings in all competitions under Beale and Clement combined this term.

This means that Wright has mustered up one goal and two assists in his last 49 matches for Rangers as a winger since the start of last season.

The stats that show why Langoni would be an upgrade on Wright

Clement could land an upgrade on the Scottish dud and open the door for the ex-Aberdeen star to finally move on from Ibrox by securing a deal for Langoni.

The 5 foot 8 wizard, who can produce exciting skills like the one in the video below, made his first-team breakthrough with Boca Juniors during the 2022 campaign and caught the eye with promising displays throughout his first two years in the senior set-up.

In 2022, the 21-year-old ace produced six goals and one assist in 18 Liga Profesional outings for his side as he showcased his goalscoring potential.

Langoni, who was described as a "revelation" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, followed that up with three goals, one assist, and two 'big chances' created in 12 outings in that competition for Boca during the 2023 campaign.

In total, the right winger has chipped in with ten goals and two assists in 45 first-team appearances for his club, which is nine more direct goal contributions than Wright in four fewer matches over the same period of time.

The Gers target, who is predominantly deployed as a right winger, could offer far more in the final third in comparison to the current Light Blues forward.

At the age of 21, he would also arrive with more potential and time on his hands to develop and improve over the years to come, as Langoni is five years younger than Wright.

Therefore, Rangers' interest in the Boca starlet is bad news for the Scottish winger as it could limit his game time further and force him to reconsider his future at Ibrox.

Ange now gifted Tottenham injury boost after update on Cristian Romero

Tottenham and manager Ange Postecoglou have been given a pre-Brighton boost after some injury news out of north London.

Dec 23, 2023

Victories over Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Everton have brought the good feeling back to N17, coming after they previously went from November 4 to December 10 without a single league win.

Injuries to Micky van de Ven and James Maddison, coupled with suspensions, gave Postecoglou real selection headaches throughout that time – but he now appears to have struck a winning formula.

After their latest win over the Toffees, Postecoglou heaped praise on Spurs for their resilience in particular.

"Obviously the result is very pleasing against a very difficult opponent today in Everton, who have been the form team of the competition for the past few weeks," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's win over Everton (via football.london).

"You can see why today, they worked hard and we kind of got on top of them in the first half, apart from our goals our football was good. We looked really threatening and then after we got 2-0 ahead we just eased back a little bit and I thought that allowed them to get back into the game.

"We just took a bit more time on the ball and some of it was because of them. They kept working hard and in the second half it became something of a transitional game. We had to show some resilience and some strong defending in the box and a couple of outstanding saves from Vic, who was brilliant again today. It had a little bit of everything. A different type of performance from us. I guess the pleasing thing for us is that we got the three points."

One worrying aspect of the game, especially as Tottenham prepare for a tough away trip to Brighton, was star defender Cristian Romero being hauled off with hamstring tightness.

radu-dragusin-cristian-romero-tottenham-opinion

This brought up some concerns that the Argentine could miss Spurs' trip to the south coast, but they've now been alleviated by journalist Dom Smith of The Evening Standard.

Romero in line to face Brighton

Indeed, Romero is expected to be fit for Spurs against Brighton and is line to feature, which will come as a big boost for Postecoglou who is looking to make it a fourth win in four games. The 25-year-old has been an important player for Postecoglou's top four-chasing Londoners, starting every Premier League game he's been available.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

Romero and van de Ven formed an imperious centre-back partnership at the beginning of the campaign, and his return from suspension has been a vital part of Spurs' recent up tick in form. News of him most likely being available will surely lift the Lilywhites in their pursuit of a solid end to 2023.

Spurs signing an £86m "magician" could hand Kulusevski a permanent new role

For all the great strides made under Ange Postecoglou's watch of late, Tottenham Hotspur still have a way to go before they can truly challenge at the top end of the table, with the club's lack of squad depth seemingly a particular issue.

While still being led superbly by top scorer, Heung-min Son, the absence of Harry Kane has left the Lilywhites in need of further attacking reinforcements heading into the January window, despite signing Brennan Johnson on a £47.5m deal over the summer.

Spurs could land very own Declan Rice with bid for £30m “superstar”

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 20, 2023

That search for new acquisitions has seemingly led the north Londoners to Camp Nou, with recent reports indicating that the Premier League outfit are interested in former Leeds United man, Raphinha.

Spurs transfer news – Raphinha

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo last month, Tottenham are believed to be one of the clubs who are interested in signing the Barcelona winger in the new year, with the Brazilian having slipped behind teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, in the pecking order in Catalonia.

The suggestion has been that the LaLiga giants would be willing to sanction an exit for the 26-year-old if they were able to receive a suitable offer next month, despite having only signed the forward on a £55m deal back in the summer of 2022.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

According to a more recent report from Spanish outlet Sport – amid apparent interest from Manchester United – Barca are set to demand a fee of around €100m (£86m) for the wideman, with that potentially set to prove something of a sticking point for any interested party.

That being said, if some sort of compromise can be met, then Spurs – who were keen on prising the player from Elland Road 18 months ago – could well be able to bolster their ranks with a true "magician", as hailed by ex-teammate, Daniel James.

Raphinha's season by numbers

It is fair to say that Raphinha has endured a difficult time of late under Xavi Hernandez, having been restricted to just six starts in Spain's top flight, due to the presence of the emerging Yamal.

Despite that lack of action, however, the one-time Rennes sensation has still managed to chip in with two goals and four assists in LaLiga, as well as providing a further two assists from just three Champions League outings – highlighting just what a difference maker he can be from the flanks.

Such is his attacking threat, the £207k-per-week maverick notably ranks in the top 2% among his European peers for progressive passes received and for total shots per 90, as well as ranking in the top 7% for assists made across the last 365 days.

That record has been aided by his form last term in which the 20-cap international dazzled in his debut campaign in Catalonia, in which he reached double figures for both goals and assists in 50 games in all competitions.

Quite why he has been rather underused this time around is a question to ask Xavi, yet if Spurs were to strike a deal in January – or next summer – they would be able to acquire a hungry asset who has also previously shone in the Premier League.

Raphinha's Leeds United statistics

It was in West Yorkshire that the mercurial talent truly made a name for himself after arriving from France on a £17m deal in 2020, ultimately proving a key figure following Leeds' return to the top flight after a 16-year absence.

Over the next two years, the one-time Sporting CP sensation would go on to prove himself a player who "can do absolutely anything on the pitch" – as per the aforementioned James – having scored 17 goals and laid on 12 assists in 65 Premier League appearances.

Undoubtedly able to provide a clinical and creative presence from the flanks, the "extremely talented" ace – as hailed by pundit Graeme Souness – unsurprisingly had the likes of Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal fighting over themselves to try and do a deal in 2022.

While the player ultimately had his heart set on moving to Camp Nou, a return to England to link up with Postecoglou and co could be a welcome move for all parties, with Raphinha able to offer that extra sprinkling of magic in attack at N17.

Such a deal could also perhaps impact the future of Dejan Kulusevski, with the Swedish starlet able to move into a new role on a permanent basis, if the Barcelona man is to sign.

How Raphinha could fit in at Spurs

With Raphinha typically doing most of his damage from the right flank, it could mean that Kulusevski – who usually lines up in that role – is able to shuffle across into the number ten berth moving forward.

As the former Juventus man has previously revealed, lining up in a playmaking role is seemingly his preferred position, having begun life in a central role in his early career:

"That's my position. Before I was a 10. I always played in the middle.

"Then in Palma, in the first season they put me right winger and that's what I had to do, I had to change my position after that. But I'm ready to play every position because I did it all my life."

With James Maddison currently out of the picture, the 23-year-old dazzled as an attacking midfielder in the recent win over Nottingham Forest, having scored himself and provided an assist for Richarlison in what was a magnificent all-round display.

As The Athletic's Seb Stafford-Bloor noted at the time, such a showing was like watching "one of those [Gareth] Bale games" under Andre Villas-Boas, with the Welshman having also moved more centrally towards the end of his first spell at the club.

That standout performance from Kulusevski even had Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville tipping him to potentially blossom into an £80m-£100m player in the near future, while the former Man United man also quipped that Maddison will "have to fight" to reclaim that starting berth once he returns from injury.

As such, if Raphinha signs to play off the right, Kulusevski could then remain in the centre for the long term, ensuring that when Maddison does make his return, he will either have to drop slightly deeper, feature off the left or compete with the Swede as a number ten.

Either way, not only could Raphinha's signing be a blessing for Kulusevski, but it could also give Postecoglou another attacking weapon to yield.

Ten Hag will take charge of Manchester United for a final time at Wembley on Saturday in the FA Cup final as the Dutchman will depart the club this summer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, via . The Red Devils are already on the lookout for a new manager and will make a change even if Ten Hag masterminds an FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Ten Hag's future has become uncertain after a difficult campaign for the Red Devils. United finished the season down in eighth place in the Premier League table, with a negative goal difference, and will only play European football next season if they beat City in the final. Manchester United have already been linked with a move for Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna as well as England manager Gareth Southgate if Ten Hag does depart Old Trafford after the cup final. Former Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel and freshly unemployed Maurico Pochettino are also thought to be in the frame.

WHAT DI MARZIO SAID

Di Marzio said: "McKenna is the man of the moment in the football world, in the world of coaches, because he is doing great at Ipswich Town. He is the number one choice at Brighton & Hove Albion, but he has also already spoken to Manchester United. At the end of the season, United will say goodbye to Ten Hag.

“Manchester United will also be looking for a new coach. And their targets are McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino. De Zerbi is also on the list, but he has not been in contact with United in recent days. If he [McKenna] goes to Chelsea, United will go for Pochettino. But what is certain: they are saying goodbye to Ten Hag."

On Friday, Di Marzio's claims were echoed by The Guardian, with the club declining to comment on the matter.

Tottenham eyeing January move for Kalvin Phillips as loan fee shared

After securing deals to sign Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, Tottenham Hotspur's transfer business may not be done this month, with reports suggesting they could yet move to sign a Champions League-winning midfielder for Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham transfer news

Looking to replace Heung-min Son whilst he's on international duty at the Asian Cup with South Korea, Spurs welcomed former Chelsea striker Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. As he seeks Premier League redemption, the German could make his debut against Manchester United. Speaking on Werner's arrival, Postecoglou said:

"I had a good chat to [Technical Director] Johan Lange about it and thought Timo would be a really good fit for us stylistically. He certainly has the kind of attributes we look for. A player in that space – he can play in all three positions so that’s some real depth and quality for us in the front third."

The Lilywhites then followed up Werner's arrival by signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin for a reported £25m, beating Bayern Munich to his signature. Like Werner, the defender could make his debut at Old Trafford in what could be looked back on as an important game in the battle for a European place. A third arrival could really hand Postecoglou's squad a boost and they may yet get that after Kalvin Phillips' loan fee price tag was revealed.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Spurs will have to pay between £5m and £6m to sign Phillips on loan this month and the North London club could yet make their move ahead of the likes of Juventus, with the player on their list of targets.

Former Spurs scout Bryan King reported the news on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, saying: "Personally, if they are looking for a central midfielder, and there has been a lot of talk, I’d be looking at Phillips at Man City. I mean £5million or £6million for a loan – I’d certainly be looking at that. He has the kind of energy that Ange [Postecoglou] likes.”

It may well turn out to be a month centred around reviving careers at Spurs, with Werner looking to get back on track in North London and Phillips potentially hoping to do the same. The Manchester City midfielder has never really been handed a consistent opportunity at the Etihad and appears to need a move. This season, Phillips' game time hasn't increased even in the absence of Rodri at times, playing just 318 minutes in all competitions and starting just two games.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

At his best, Phillips could still perform to the levels that saw him earn the praise of England manager Gareth Southgate, who said:

“He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team. We felt he could play an important role with us.

“To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him. He’s a very, very good player and he’s been a really important part of this – we’re 16 games unbeaten [in regulation time] now and he’s been a huge part of that.”
