The ups and downs of Khawaja's Test career

What does the future hold for Usman Khawaja after he was dropped for the fourth Test against England?

Andrew McGlashan03-Sep-2019January 2011: Test debutKhawaja’s debut, in the final Test of the 2010-11 Ashes, came with considerable expectation and given his heritage was considered a significant moment for Australian cricket. With the team’s batting in a slump – they had been skittled for 98 in the preceding Boxing Day Test – Khawaja’s first innings 37, on a rain-interrupted day, was lauded for its composure in what became another heavy defeat.November 2011: Guts in JohannesburgDropped two Tests after his debut, Khawaja returned to score his maiden Test fifty in demanding circumstances against South Africa at the Wanderers. His 65 in the second innings spanned nearly three hours and helped lay a platform from where Australia chased down 310 to level the series the match after they had been bowled out for 47 in Cape Town. However, the stop-start nature of Khawaja’s early days in Test cricket saw him out of the team again midway through 2011-12 home season.March 2013: HomeworkgateHe was part of the squad for 2012-13 tour of India but was caught up in the homework controversy that led to him being one of the four players suspended for the Mohali Test. He had not been in the side in the early part of the series and there had been murmurings about his attitude. “This will be the catalyst I think for Usman Khawaja to realise we’re pretty serious in the Australian cricket team,” coach Mickey Arthur said.December 2014: Knee reconstructionArthur was sacked as coach days before the 2013 Ashes began and Khawaja was recalled for the second Test of that series but the comeback lasted just three games. He did not feature in the return Ashes in Australia and during the following summer suffered a bad knee injury preparing for the BBL which required reconstructive surgery, ruling him out for six months and any chance of playing the 2015 Ashes in England.Usman Khawaja celebrates his maiden Test century•Getty ImagesNovember 2015: Prolific comebackHe was recalled for the 2015-16 series against New Zealand and it looked as though he had cracked Test cricket. A maiden century, 174, at the Gabba was followed by 121 in Perth and, though a hamstring injury kept him out for two Tests, further hundreds came against West Indies in Melbourne and New Zealand in Wellington.August 2016: ‘Scapegoat’ in Sri LankaWhen Australia went 2-0 down on their 2016 tour of Sri Lanka, Khawaja was one of the batsmen to pay the price (along with Joe Burns) when he was dropped for the final Test of the series. It was a decision that did not go down well. ”It was disappointing that Joe Burns and I were sort of the scapegoats for not performing,” he said a few months later. ”I just thought that I’d only played two Test matches in the subcontinent and I got dropped. I wasn’t the only person who wasn’t scoring runs.”November 2016: Opening successKhawaja was promptly back in the side for the home season which began with a series against South Africa and he enjoyed a productive return. Australia, however, were 2-0 down following a crushing defeat in Hobart which led to sweeping changes for the final match in Adelaide. Khawaja survived and when Faf du Plessis pulled off a surprise declaration under the floodlights, and with David Warner off the field, he was promoted to open and responded with a superb 145 which helped set up a consolation victory.February 2017: Left out in IndiaThe subcontinent issue reared its head again with Khawaja left out for all four Tests on the 2017 tour of India as Australia tried to find a way of countering the home side’s threat. There was a famous 333-run win in Pune, but India fought back to take a bad-tempered series 2-1. Khawaja returned for the first Test in Bangladesh but twin failures in Australia’s defeat saw him left out again. “It creates a lot of instability in the team I reckon, going in and out for everyone,” he later said. “It is very hard to develop your game and play some consistent cricket if you’re not getting consistent opportunities overseas, which I haven’t been getting.”Usman Khawaja blocks on the front foot•AFPNovember 2017: Ashes returnOnce again, home comforts brought Khawaja back into the side for the 2017-18 Ashes. It was a middling series until the final match in Sydney when he struck 171 – his first century against England.October 2018: UAE epicIn the aftermath of the ball-tampering controversy, Khawaja was now a senior figure in the team. He responded with his finest performance in the opening Test against Pakistan in Dubai with a brilliant match-saving 141 (to follow a first-innings 85) as he opened the batting. His century spanned more than eight and a half hours. A knee injury curtailed his participation in the second Test.December 2018: Home strugglesAgainst a high-class India attack batting was tough and Khawaja had to grind out his runs. A 72 in the second innings at Perth, on a lively pitch at the new ground, was a key part in Australia’s victory but he couldn’t build on that in the final two matches. There was talk about his place in the side against Sri Lanka before he rounded off the series with an unbeaten 101 in the second innings in Canberra. It meant his Ashes place was secure for the start of the series, but that wouldn’t last.

Spurs make contract offer to sign star who nearly joined Pochettino in 2018

Tottenham Hotspur have offered one club's "spectacular" player a four-year contract to join Ange Postecoglou, coming after he considered signing for Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs in 2018.

Rejuvenated Spurs chasing top-four finish

The north Londoners have been given a new lease of life this season, with the appointment of Postecoglou being one of chairman Daniel Levy's best decisions of recent years.

Spurs preparing "firm move" for "underrated" star who Lange wanted at Villa

Tottenham’s technical director has a real history with him.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 15, 2024

The Australian, who won a plethora of honours at Celtic before swapping Glasgow for north London, is an increasingly popular figure at the club. His brand of intense, high-pressing football has won plenty of admirers, including the likes of Gary Neville, as Tottenham contend for Champions League qualification.

"What you cannot deny is the football," said Neville on Postecoglou.

"It sounds really simple this but football fans love watching exciting football. They will forgive a lot if you actually are watching football that is breath-taking.

“It is such a brilliant way of playing. I used to love (Mauricio) Pochettino’s time here because his football was high energy, front foot, pressing. The technical level that we’re watching out there in this Spurs team is fantastic."

While they're set to go another season trophyless, if things continue on this upward trajectory, it could only be a matter of time before the Lilywhites clinch major silverware.

The feel-good feeling around Tottenham is already being noticed from afar, with the club's growing pull helping them to beat both Bayern Munich and Barcelona to the signings of Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall in January.

They've already been linked with more big names in the summer as well, like Brentford star Ivan Toney, but another very interesting elite target to emerge this week is Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman, who's been called "spectacular" by Barca boss Xavi, actually admitted to nearly joining Spurs in 2018 – before opting for the Camp Nou.

"I considered their [Tottenham] offer long and hard. I see Tottenham as a very stable club, and they are only getting better," de Jong told FourFourTwo via Sky Sports.

"They give young players a chance and I see Mauricio Pochettino as a manager who really improves young players. I like the kind of football they are playing. I think it would have suited my game."

Now, as per Jijantes FC and journalist Gerard Romero, Postecoglou's side have come back in for the midfielder.

Spurs offer Frenkie de Jong a four-year deal to join

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham have offered a four-year deal to de Jong as they attempt to sign him, with an out-of-window bid made to Barcelona as well.

The 26-year-old has started 16 La Liga games under Xavi this season, averaging a 93% passing accuracy in that time, with WhoScored also rating him as one of Barca's best performers.

The 10 Tallest Football Players in the World in 2024 (Ranked)

For all their athletic ability and untold riches, football players tend to be pretty average when it comes to height, for sports stars at least. You don't tend to see many players exceeding 1.92m – or 6 foot 3 – and it usually becomes a talking point when they do.

For example, Peter Crouch was a great player in his own right, but he is remembered for being one of the tallest players we have ever seen. Put him up against a basketball player, however, and he is distinctly average – height-wise, that is.

So how tall can professional players get, and who are the tallest professional players in world football today?

With that in mind, we have created a list of the 10 tallest football players still playing the game today in 2024 using data from Transfermarkt.

10 Carlos Miguel (Corinthians) 2.04m (6 foot 7) – Goalkeeper

We're kicking off our list with a goalkeeper – there is going to be plenty of those – from South America, Brazil to be exact.

Carlos Miguel comes in at a massive 2.04m, or just about 6 foot 7, and we say massive regarding the rest of us. Compared to the rest of the players on this list, he's a good one to two inches shorter.

Miguel began his career in Internacional's reserve side before spending a couple of seasons on loan with Santa Cruz and Boa Esporte before making a permanent move to Brazilian giants Corinthians in August 2021.

He isn't the side's number-one keeper, but he has made eight first-team appearances this year and kept six clean sheets in the process, which is pretty good going for a backup.

9 Armin Spahic (TOSK Tesanj) 2.05m (6 foot 8) – Centre-back

The second man to make it onto our list is Austrian centre-back Armin Spahic, who is the first of three players to come in at 2.05m, or about 6 foot 8.

The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade in Bosnia-Herzegovina for second-tier side TOSK Tesanj, who he only joined in September of last year from fellow Bosnian second-tier side OFK Gradina Srebrenik.

The Austrian looks to be enjoying a relatively successful first season with his new club as he has featured in the starting XI 11 times so far this season and has even found himself on the scoresheet on one occasion – not bad for a new defender.

8 Milan Ziric (Vorwarts Steyr) 2.05m (6 foot 8) – Centre-back

We've got another Austrian centre-back measuring 6 foot 8 inches coming in next, although instead of playing in the Bosnian second division, he has stayed closer to home.

Milan Ziric plays for Austrian third-tier side Vorwarts Steyr, joining them in July last year from fourth-tier side SPG Wels II.

Like his compatriot in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ziric is having a great season with his new side, starting 12 games so far this season and helping them climb to fourth in the table – as things stand.

7 Lucas Bergstrom (Chelsea) 2.05m (6 foot 8) – Goalkeeper

Chelsea goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom.

The last 6 foot 8 player on the list is our second goalkeeper and the first player to ply his trade on these shores, in the Premier League, no less.

Lucas Berstrom is currently a Chelsea player and has been ever since his move from Finnish side Turun Palloseura during the 2018/19 season.

He spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Peterborough United and made 28 first-team appearances for the posh, in which he kept nine clean sheets.

He hasn't made a first-team appearance for the Blues yet, but he was on the team's preseason tour of America and has one international cap to his name.

6 Kevin Gadella (FC Utrecht II) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

We have reached the players on this list who tower above pretty much everyone else on a football pitch and probably wouldn't look amiss on a basketball court.

Kevin Gadella plys his trade in his home country of the Netherlands with FC Utrecht II – their under 21 team – and he has been having a mixed season so far this year.

He has featured in 13 games for the club, and he has let in 24 goals and kept five clean sheets so far, and with the team down in 19th place, he'll surely be looking to improve as the campaign continues.

5 Kjell Scherpen (SK Sturm Graz) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

We're back in the Premier League for the next one, well, sort of.

Kjell Scherpen is currently on loan to Austrian first-tier side Sturm Graz, but his parent club are Brighton & Hove Albion, back in the English top-flight.

The young Dutchman joined the Seagulls from Eredivisie giants Ajax in the summer of 2021 for an undisclosed fee before spending time in Belgium and the Netherlands on loan before ending up in Austria this season.

He's been having a cracking season this year, having conceded just 32 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, as well as keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

It would be great to see him make it in the Premier League one day, just to see how some of the shorter strikers cope with him.

Ranking the 10 tallest Premier League players for 2023/2024 season

FFC takes a detailed look at the tallest players to ever ply their trade in the Premier League.

BySean Markus Clifford Oct 4, 2023 4 Denys Tvardovskyi (Shakhtar Donetsk) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

The fourth spot gives us our fourth goalkeeper on the bounce – we did say there were a lot of them on this list – and it's Shakhtar Donetsk's backup, Denys Tvardovskyi.

The 20-year-old has been with the Ukrainian giants for his entire professional career but has yet to be given the opportunity to start a game for the first team, let alone an appearance off the bench.

However, he has started eight games in the UEFA Youth League for the U19s, conceding 12 goals but keeping three clean sheets. He has also earned three caps for the Ukrainian U19 side and one for the U21s.

We reckon it won't be long until we see him in the starting XI for Shakhtar.

3 Isaak Toure (FC Lorient) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Centre-back

The third spot on the list gives us a much-needed break from the wall-to-wall goalkeepers of the last four entries – my apologies to the union – with 20-year-old centre-back Isaak Toure claiming the bronze.

The Gonesse-born titan stands at 2.06m – 6 foot 9 – and currently plys his trade for Ligue 1 side FC Lorient after completing a move from French giants Marseille earlier this summer.

He's having a reasonably successful season with the men in orange this year, appearing in 18 games and helping his team stay out of the relegation zone, for now at least.

2 Tomas Holy (Carlisle United) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper

The penultimate player on our list is another goalkeeper who makes his living in the English leagues, Carlisle United's Tomas Holy.

Like the four players before him, the six-cap Czech international comes in at a whopping 6 foot 9 and has been a regular in the EFL ever since his 2017 move to Gillingham from Prague outfit Sparta Prague.

He would make over 100 appearances for the Gills before moving to Ipswich Town in 2019. A couple of loan moves to Cambridge United and Port Vale followed before he joined Carlisle on a permanent contract in the summer of 2022.

Since moving north, Holy has become one of the most important members of the first team and has made 73 appearances to date.

1 Kyle Hudlin (Huddersfield Town) 2.06m (6 foot 9) – Striker

Right, here we are, number one, and we have saved the best until last, a 6 foot 9 striker, yes, a striker.

Just think back to how big Peter Crouch used to look against regular defenders, and then add another two inches. That is how tall Huddersfield Town striker Kyle Hudlin is.

The 23-year-old forward started his career with Solihull before moving to Solihull Moors and finally to Huddersfield Town in July 2022. Since then, he has spent six months on loan with AFC Wimbledon before returning to the Terriers, where he still is this season.

However, he hasn't exactly proved his worth since joining as he's currently on loan at League One side Burton Albion.

However, the talent is undoubtedly there, as he was a real handful at Solihull Moors. Just have a look for yourselves.

Priyank Panchal ton the last-day highlight in drawn game

Priyank Panchal scored a century and Karun Nair hit his second half-century of the match on the final day of the second unofficial Test between India A and South Africa A in Mysuru, before the two teams agreed to call off the game after just 64 overs of action on Friday. The result meant India A won the two-match series 1-0.Opener Panchal’s 109 and Nair’s 51 not out from No. 4 took the home side to 202 for 3 in their second innings, with the declaration coming once Nair had reached his milestone. But with not much time left on the day, South Africa opted not to chase their 220-run target.Panchal – who had batted at No. 3 with Shubman Gill opening in the first innings – was on 9 with his opening partner Abhimanyu Easwaran on 5 overnight. The two built on the Indians’ 17-run first-innings lead with a 94-run stand before Abhimanyu fell, bowled by offspinner Dane Piedt, for 37 off 93 balls with three hits to the boundary. That was in the 34th over, and Piedt struck again in his next over when he had Gill, batting at No. 3 this time after top-scoring with 92 in the first dig, caught by Senuran Muthusamy for a duck.Panchal chugged along though, and proceeded to add 92 more with Nair, bringing up his 22nd first-class century in the process. His innings included nine fours and four sixes. It continued Panchal’s rich vein of form, which had hit a temporary snag in the Duleep Trophy with a top score of 33 across four innings.Muthuswamy, the left-arm spinner, did succeed in sending back Panchal, caught and bowled, but Nair, who had settled down by then, continued his own strong form in recent times with a half-century. His scores in first-class cricket this season read: 99, 166*, 90, 20, 78 and 51*. When the teams shook hands, Nair had captain Wriddhiman Saha, unbeaten on 1 off 33 balls, for company.Earlier, after Aiden Markram asked the Indians to bat, they rode on the half-centuries from Gill and Nair as well as Saha’s 60, Shivam Dube’s 68 and Jalaj Saxena’s unbeaten 48 to put up 417.Kuldeep Yadav and Shahbaz Nadeem combined to then reduce South Africa to 142 for 5, before hundreds by Markram and Wiaan Mulder rescued the visiting side. Markram (161) and Mulder (131*) added 155 runs for the sixth wicket, and though Markram was eventually bowled by Mohammed Siraj, Mulder carried South Africa close to India’s total.Kuldeep and Nadeem picked up seven wickets between them, and Markram was named the player of the match. This match marked the end of South Africa A’s tour of India, which started with a five-match one-day series – India took that 4-1 – and concluded with the two four-dayers, the first of which the Indians won by seven wickets. The senior sides from the two countries are currently engaged in a T20I series and will then play three Test matches.

Dermot Desmond eyeing specific top Celtic signing after new transfer update

Celtic have identified a priority signing during the summer transfer window, as Dermot Desmond looks to oversee more important business.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops have been linked with plenty of potential new signings of late, as the club look to bolster the squad, regardless of what happens in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Desmond is reportedly keen on bringing in a new striker in the summer, with Celtic even willing to set aside "huge funds" to bring in a top-quality player to lead the line. Liel Abada's exit to MLS side Charlotte FC has heightened the need to bring in attacking reinforcements.

Celtic striker Adam Idah in action for the Republic of Ireland.

There is also the potential for Adam Idah's loan move to become a permanent one at the end of the current campaign, although his situation appears to be a little unclear at the moment. That's because Mark Lawwell didn't include an option for Celtic to buy the striker in his contract at Parkhead, having arrived on loan from Norwich City in January.

FC Twente left-back Gijs Smal is another player who has been backed to seal a move to the Hoops in the coming month, having been compared to AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini in the past, which is incredible praise.

Whatever happens this summer, it certainly looks as though the Hoops have identified their attack as a primary area of focus, and now a new update has emerged.

Celtic's priority summer target revealed

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Celtic have made a new winger in the summer window a top priority, following the recent exit of Abada. They are keen to "fill the void" that the 22-year-old has left "as quickly as possible" come the end of the season, ensuring they look healthy in attacking areas.

Liel Abada

While no specific player is mentioned in the update, it is encouraging to see Desmond clearly sanctioning moves for attacking stars, given the aforementioned report about a new striker also arriving at Parkhead.

This is a crucial period in Celtic's recent future, at a time when rivals Rangers are threatening to become more of a force again, and the Hoops cannot afford to let their high standards drop.

Brendan Rodgers is far from secure in his job, with a new claim suggesting that those high up at the club don't see him as the long-term answer as manager – he will likely have to win the league in order to stay in the job – and it is imperative that funds continue to be available to strengthen the squad.

Ellyse Perry powers Sydney Sixers to opening WBBL victory

Sydney Sixers launched the first standalone WBBL with an impressive 49-run victory

Andrew McGlashan18-Oct-2019Ellyse Perry has been a little in the background in Australia colours at the start of the season because of the dominant form of her team-mates, but back with Sydney Sixers she picked up from last season with an agenda-setting all-round performance with 81 off 48 balls and two wickets as the Sixers began the first standalone WBBL with a handsome 49-run victory.Last season Perry scored a WBBL record 777 runs including two centuries. She did not spend much time at the crease against West Indies and Sri Lanka over the last six weeks but made full use of being back at the top of the order with a classy innings with 58 off her 81 runs combing in boundaries.Initially, she took a backseat to Alyssa Healy who carried on from her world record T20I score of 148 not out against Sri Lanka on this ground a couple of weeks ago with 42 off 32 balls, ended when she skied to mid-on as Pakistan allrounder Nida Dar claimed the first wicket of the tournament. The Thunder’s fielding was poor with a number of balls not gathered cleanly while Ash Gardner was dropped on 20 by Alex Blackwell. Dar, the first Pakistan player in the WBBL, was heading for respectable figures until her final went for 21.In the final over of the innings there was what appeared to be a nasty injury when debutant Maddy Darke stumbled attempting her first run and remained down in the middle of the pitch. The Thunder had a chance to run her out but declined yet the run was eventually credited to the Sixers which left captain Rachael Haynes a little perplexed. In the end, however, one run was far from making the difference as the Thunder did not threaten the target with the top order dispatched inside the powerplay.Perry made immediate inroads when she trapped Naomi Stalenberg lbw then had Rachel Priest caught at backward point in the space of three deliveries. Any chances of the Thunder making an impression on the chase disappeared when Haynes skied Marizanne Kapp. However, there was the opportunity for a glimpse at the future as 16-year-old Phoebe Litchfield played a debut innings that showcased the immense promise that has been talked about. A manager who adopts a "similar" playing style to Jurgen Klopp could become Liverpool's next boss this summer, according to Reds legend Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool looking for Jurgen Klopp successor

The Merseysiders are flying high in the Premier League, still topping the table after their 4-1 win away to Brentford on Saturday lunchtime, but it is still impossible to ignore the imminent exit of Klopp.

The legendary German has confirmed that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season, following eight-and-a-half years as manager, in a decision that has left Liverpool supporters both heartbroken and stunned.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool beat Chelsea in the 2022 Carabao Cup final.

The search is now on to find the perfect successor, which is going to be an incredibly difficult task, and Xabi Alonso is the current front-runner to come in. His Bayer Leverkusen side are now eight points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, and his past as a Reds player makes him an even more popular option.

The 42-year-old is far from the only contender to be Liverpool's next boss, however, with Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi linked with a switch to Anfield, as well as Sporting CP leader Ruben Amorim.

Carragher reveals surprise candidate

Speaking to The Redmen TV [via Empire of the Kop], Carragher name-checked Benfica manager Roger Schmidt as an option to replace Klopp this summer, following something he has "heard".

"There’s the guy at Benfica that I’ve heard mentioned, Roger Schmidt. Who I think has got that link to the sort of Red Bull school. I think when people are mentioning him, it’s almost sort of the style is similar to Klopp’s style, so you think, ‘okay, would that be a good fit and would you have to change that much?'"

Schmidt could be an intriguing option for Liverpool. The 56-year-old is now an extremely experienced manager, winning the Primeira Liga title with Benfica in 2022/23, and also tasting Austrian league glory during his time with RB Salzburg back in 2013/14, highlighting his longevity.

The fact that Carragher mentioned Schmidt's playing style drawing comparisons with Klopp's could also mean that a move for him makes sense, with the Benfica boss known for adopting a 4-2-3-1 system, which certainly isn't dissimilar to how Liverpool set up, albeit with a bit more emphasis on controlling the base of midfield.

He likes to press from the front, just like Klopp, and the current Reds players could therefore find the transition relatively comfortable, rather than bringing in a manager with very different tactics.

That being said, Alonso still feels like the most exciting candidate, for all of Schmidt's plus points, with the Spaniard a younger, more vibrant option who looks like one of the outstanding managers of the younger crop coming through. Failing to bring him in would ultimately feel disappointing at this point.

Chelsea gem who won 9 duels v Leeds was the real hero over Gallagher

Well, that was probably a bit tougher than it should've been.

Nevertheless, Chelsea beat bitter rivals Leeds United in the FA Cup last night, are through to the quarter-finals and have bounced back from their disappointing trip to Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino's side were undoubtedly up against it at points during the 90 minutes, but the result feels like a fair reflection of the match.

While several players in Blue putting in lacklustre performances, a certain few can be pleased with their showing, including match-winner Conor Gallagher.

Conor Gallagher's performance in numbers

The Blues' hardworking all-action midfielder was named on the bench going into last night's clash, and following his multiple missed chances against Liverpool on Sunday, it was a position some players might've welcomed.

However, with the game locked at 2-2 and Leeds looking dangerous, Pochettino turned to the Englishman and brought him on in place of the underwhelming Noni Madueke in the 61st minute.

The 24-year-old didn't have the luxury of time to bed into the game, but while he misplaced a few passes and through balls early on, it took little time for him to get up to speed with the action.

It was 29 minutes into his cameo, in the 90th minute of the game, that he made the single most important contribution – he scored the winner.

This impact led to the Standard's Dan Kilpatrick awarding the Epsom-born dynamo an 8/10 on the night and claiming that he spared 'Chelsea another 30 minutes of extra-time and potentially their blushes.'

While his strike was undeniably his most tangible impact on the game, Gallagher also came off the pitch with some impressive personal statistics.

For example, he maintained a passing accuracy of 93%, succeeded in his one dribble, committed a single foul and lost possession just once.

Ultimately, the Blue's "heart", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, won the game for his side, but there was another midfield ace who was arguably just as, if not more impressive last night.

Enzo Fernández's performance in numbers

Yes, Argentinian World Cup winner Enzo Fernández was arguably the best Chelsea player on the pitch against Leeds.

The 23-year-old started the game in the middle of the park alongside Moises Caicedo and played the full 94 minutes, contributing in the attacking and defensive phases of play.

It was his driving run and brilliantly placed pass that allowed Gallagher to score the winner in the first place, and while the Standard's Kilpatrick was impressed with his performance, crediting him for being 'tidy in possession', his rating of just 7/10 feels harsh given his influence on proceedings.

That said, he also criticised Fernández for getting 'carelessly booked', meaning he'll miss the quarter-final, which is a fair complaint.

However, the young "phenomenon", as Kulig dubbed him, put up some seriously impressive individual numbers on the night, numbers that make the case for him being the man of the match.

For example, in his 94 minutes, he took 67 touches, maintained a passing accuracy of 94%, played two key passes, was successful in four of his five long balls, had one shot on target, won nine of his 14 duels, lost possession just six times, made two clearances, two interceptions, and five tackles.

Ultimately, Gallagher deserves a lot of credit for his match-winning contribution.

However, he might not have even been in the position to win the game were it not for Fernández's tireless efforts throughout the 90.
