Yuvraj Singh arrives, as India dispatch Australia in style

The world champions are taking an early flight home from Nairobi.Australia had beaten India in seven straight ODIs prior to this to be the outright favourites coming into the first quarter-final of the ICC Knockouts, but a young Indian team looking to emerge from the shadows of the match-fixing scandal made quite a statement. That it was an 18-year old Yuvraj Singh, with his gum-chewing nonchalance and elegance, and birthday boy Zaheer Khan who left their imprint on the big stage made it all the more special for India.Had new captain Sourav Ganguly stuck to his plan of dropping down to No. 4 and opening with rookie S Sriram to lengthen the middle order, Yuvraj may have not even had the opportunity to play. But he was talked out of the idea by the senior players and Aunshuman Gaekwad, the head coach, and that set the stage for Yuvraj in what was his second ODI, but the first time he got to bat in an international.Yuvraj’s 84 off 80, which powered India to 265, stood out for many reasons. He was fearless, his ball-striking was clean, ability to pick gaps top-notch and his match-awareness – twice he was alert to possibilities of sneaking in an overthrow – allowed India the opportunity to claw back despite losing more wickets than comfortable ever since Sachin Tendulkar’s quickfire start, where he got stuck into Glenn McGrath.Even with Tendulkar, Ganguly and Rahul Dravid gone, Yuvraj didn’t shelve his natural game. There was a punch to his shots that made it appear as if he wasn’t nervous, the pull made multiple appearances and just his casual demeanour at the crease – not to be mistaken for laziness – gave you the impression that he had a lot of time to play hit shots. His partnerships of 40 and 64 with Vinod Kambli and Robin Singh respectively, helped arrest a middle order collapse. But batting wasn’t his only contribution on the night. A sensational diving catch while being airborne to send back pinch hitter Ian Harvey, and a potentially game-changing direct hit to run out Michael Bevan which came on the back of Ricky Ponting’s wicket, turned the tide in India’s favour. From a comfortable 159 for 3, Australia had slipped to 163 for 5.Bevan had pushed the ball to mid-off and instinctively took off for a single, until he saw Yuvraj swoop in and effect a direct hit at the bowler’s end to fall an inch or two short. Until then, Bevan had made an industrious 42, built around working the ball into the gaps and finding the odd boundary, making Ganguly’s task that much tougher because India needed to identify a fifth bowler.Ganguly turned to Tendulkar for his bag of offspin, legspin and a deceptive googly, and the move paid off. Ganguly got more than he would have bargained for, because Tendulkar not only sent down seven economical overs but also managed to dismiss Ponting. All summer, nine months ago, India hadn’t come close to winning in Australia. This was their chance, but Australia still had the ice-cool Steve Waugh at the crease. Suddenly, the blazing start and the asking rate, which they were well ahead of courtesy fireworks up top from Adam Gilchrist, started to catch up.Soon after Bevan and Ponting were dismissed, Damien Martyn was bowled off a Robin offcutter and the pressure was back on Australia. Most of the responsibility lay on Steve Waugh’s shoulders, but the bulk of the scoring from there was done by Brett Lee, who took on Anil Kumble with a six over long-off, a sweep to the fine-leg boundary and a cut to point for four to collect 15 off the 41st over. The match was poised with Australia needing 42 off 36 and three wickets in hand, but Khan’s accurate line got rid of Steve Waugh when he made room and missed a length delivery, and Ajit Agarkar followed it with a wicket maiden that included Lee’s scalp to edge India ahead again. Jason Gillespie’s three fours off Agarkar in the 46th over gave India a scare again but he eventually handed a simple catch to Robin and India stormed into the semi-finals by stunning the world champions.

Shakib Al Hasan seeks clarity on ICC's resumption rules

“I don’t think the ICC will take a chance before they are very sure,” Shakib said of a potential return of cricket

Faf du Plessis: I’m used to taking a bit of spit on my fingers in the slips

Even though the ICC has set guidelines for cricket in the pandemic period, Shakib Al Hasan, one of the game’s most experienced exponents, is hesitant about how cricket will be played in this new era. The game’s governing body released a string of protocols designed to minimize the risk of contracting Covid-19 as countries like England and Sri Lanka have already planned return to training.Shakib put forward additional questions, ranging from the social and technical requirements which are part and parcel of the game.”Now we are hearing that it [Covid-19 virus] might spread around 12 feet, not just three or six. So does it mean the two batsmen can’t meet at the end of the over?” Shakib told the Dhaka-based . “They will stand at their ends? Won’t there be any crowd in the stadium? Will the wicketkeeper stand afar? What would happen to close-in fielders? These things require discussions.”Shakib however said that the ICC are unlikely to let cricket resume without assessing the situation properly. “I don’t think they [ICC] will take a chance before they are very sure. Whatever it is, life comes first. I am sure they will think of safety first,” he said.Shakib, who is currently serving a one-year ban, said that he is spending his time counting days to his return, too.”I am counting days in two ways. One, when will corona be over, and the other, when will my suspension end. I am going through a tough time. Although there’s no cricket going on anywhere, I know that if it starts tomorrow, I won’t be able to play cricket.”When you are restricted about something, whether others talk about it or not, you know yourself about what you are going through,” he said.

Luiz Diaz tells Mohamed Salah his Liverpool exit would 'hurt us a lot' as he implores team-mate to 'think about' U-turn after 'final year' bombshell

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Salah has admitted this is his "last year" at Liverpool, with his current contract expiring next summer. The Egypt international has scored three goals and registered three assists in three games, and Diaz believes his exit would be hugely detrimental to Arne Slot's side.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It remains to be seen where Salah will end up if he does leave, but he would become the most attractive free agent on the market. Diaz, though, is hopeful he will have a change of heart and put pen to paper on a new deal.

  • WHAT DIAZ SAID

Diaz was asked about Salah's potential exit and told Telemundo: "It would be hard for us. It would be hard for Liverpool. It's going to hurt us a lot. He still has a year to think about it, it's not easy. He always gives his very best. He has done it from the start. It would be very hard to lose a key player like him. It's his decision and we respect that, but I hope he doesn't leave."

Liverpool play Nottingham Forest after the international break. They will then open their Champions League campaign three days later, in a re-run of two iconic finals from 2005 and 2007, when the Reds take on AC Milan.

O’Neil must unleash Wolves star who’s one of the PL’s "best players"

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to end their winless streak when they face AFC Bournemouth this evening in the Premier League.

Gary O’Neil has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in the Midlands, but the Old Gold have failed to win a match in all competitions since 9 March, and he will hope this changes tonight.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil celebrates a Premier League win.

Having lost several of his players to injury during their weekend defeat to Arsenal, O’Neil could be set to welcome back a few faces in what is a vital match if the Midlands side have any ambitions of securing a top-half finish.

Wolves team news vs Bournemouth

“Rayan will be fit to start if we deem that to be the right way to go,” said O’Neil during his pre-match press conference prior to the match.

“Daws' is obviously out after the surgery he had. Pablo had a tight groin after Nottingham Forest and three starts would have been tricky, but he should be available to start the next two if we choose to. Mario is available to play.”

It appears as though several players could be ready to play a part tonight and, after starting the tie against the Gunners on the bench, Rayan Ait-Nouri must be unleashed.

Rayan Ait-Nouri’s statistics this season

Journalist Dougie Critchley lauded O’Neil’s use of the Algerian earlier this month, while also describing him as "one of the Premier League’s best players in 2024.”

Rayan Ait Nouri

Among his teammates, the dynamo currently ranks sixth for goals and assists in the Premier League (three), along with ranking seventh for big chances created (two), fourth for key passes per game (0.8) and second for successful dribbles per game (two), showcasing his impressive attacking abilities.

Against Coventry during Wolves’ 3-2 defeat in the FA Cup last month, Ait-Nouri was arguably the best player on the pitch.

Not only did he score and register an assist, but the youngster also made two key passes, completed 90% of his passes, created a big chance and succeeded with three of his five dribble attempts in what was a sublime performance.

During that match, O’Neil deployed him on the left of a four-man midfield and this appeared to suit his skill set, being able to contribute effectively when the side has the ball and are pushing forward.

Hugo Bueno operated on the left against Arsenal, but failed to create any big chances, make a key pass or even attempt a dribble, showing how much the Old Gold missed Ait-Nouri.

With the next few matches crucial with regard to Wolves securing enough points to force their way into the top half of the table, O’Neil will be hoping to unleash his strongest starting XI against the Cherries.

At the time of writing, they trail Brighton and Hove Albion by a single point, having played a game more, which indicates that a victory tonight is a must, especially with matches against Manchester City and Liverpool to come over the coming weeks.

8/10 Spurs star who completed 100% dribbles is now as undroppable as Porro

Tottenham Hotspur kept their slender hopes of returning to Europe's elite next season alive after fighting to overcome a spirited Burnley side and secure three points in the Premier League.

The Clarets entered the contest imperilled and knew that anything less than extending Spurs' losing run to five matches would send them spiralling back to the Championship, and while they took the lead in the opening half through Jacob Bruun Larsen's strike, the hosts rallied through Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven to restore that winning feeling.

For Tottenham, victory has lifted Ange Postecoglou's side to 63 points in the English top flight with just two matches left to play, while a route into the Champions League could crystallise if Liverpool defeat fourth-placed Aston Villa on Monday.

Micky van de Ven for Tottenham

But that will create a schism within the Spurs support, with the midweek clash against Manchester City possibly sending Arsenal into the title-winning ascendancy if Tottenham were to secure a sixth successive home league victory over Pep Guardiola's side.

Van de Ven stole the headlines after cherry-topping a noteworthy performance with a later match-winning goal but Porro was also fantastic for his team. He's been somewhat out of sorts recently but reminded north London of his quality on a pivotal occasion.

Pedro Porro's performance vs Burnley

Tottenham might have one eye on the Champions League but the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea are snapping at Postecoglou's heels for the Premier League's fifth spot.

It's been a season of ups and downs but it's important to remember that Postecoglou has inherited an outfit that, last season, was in disrepair and had fallen by the wayside, finishing eighth in the division and missing out on Europe as a result.

There have been many different facets that have contributed toward the resurgence but the rise of Porro – who joined from Sporting Lisbon for £39m last summer after spending the latter half of last term on loan – has been key.

He's not been playing his finest football in recent weeks but the Spaniard relished the chance of playing the role of protagonist and restoring parity just after half an hour, hammering home.

Sure, Porro could have done more to stop Vitinho's early chance and he failed to close Sander Berge down in the build-up to Burnley's opener but his first-class ability is patent and he influenced the play significantly in attacking phases.

As per Sofascore, the right-back completed the full 90 against the Clarets, taking 93 touches, completing 81% of his passes, unleashing four shots on goal and supplying one key pass. Moreover, he might have lost the ball 21 times but this is a testament to Porro's constant creative threat.

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro

He is in with a really good shout to earning Tottenham's Player of the Season award after so many influential and all-encompassing performances. Porro is one of the finest in the business.

Manchester City have been known to be lurking for Porro's signature but whatever happens this summer, Daniel Levy must ensure his dynamic wide defender remains at the heart of the project.

Not the only recently struggling Lilywhite to enjoy an excellent performance on a balmy Saturday afternoon, Porro was joined by James Maddison in returning to form.

The England star has flattered to deceive in recent weeks but has been largely exemplary since joining from Leicester City for £40m last summer and has reminded north London of his spark and playmaking prowess.

James Maddison proved his worth once again

Writing in his post-match player ratings after handing Maddison an 8/10 match rating, football.london's Alasdair Gold said of Maddison's performance: 'Back in the team and sent an early deflected effort over the bar. Dipped a bit in the rest of the first half but was excellent for much of the second period.'

Maddison has failed to replicate his early-campaign heights recently but his maiden year in London has been marred by an ankle injury that kept him out through the winter months and has left him struggling to recover his fluency and fizz since.

But his creative brilliance shone through against Burnley and Postecoglou will be delighted that his prized midfielder has lifted himself back to the position of power that he holds within the squad.

Maddison, chiefly, is a creator, but he is also a robust and tenacious player, evidenced through his five duels won and his tackle and interception – also showcasing his dynamism by winning both of his attempted dribbles and creating three key passes for his teammates.

As per FBref, the £170k-per-week ace ranks among the top 17% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for passes attempted and the top 1% for progressive passes per 90.

His ability to change games with playmaking piece of brilliance has gifted Tottenham something that has lingered out of reach since the halcyon days of Christian Eriksen.

Form is temporary, class is permanent. It's a bit of a hackneyed footballing phrase but one that rings true for Maddison's situation, with his skill set simply integral to Tottenham's fluency.

Next season, Postecoglou will seek improvements, growth, and Maddison is sure to be the fulcrum of the efforts.

Ange must drop Kulusevski and unleash Spurs' "relentless" sensation

The disruptive ace could be the one to help end the Lilywhite losing streak.

ByJack Salveson Holmes May 11, 2024

Tottenham have much to improve upon next season but for all the flaws of this still-building side, there are clear signs of future success and an effective transfer strategy this summer could see the requisite improvements made to start to narrow the gap on those at the forefront of the Premier League.

Fresh faces may arrive but the likes of Maddison and Porro have quality unparalleled by the lion's share of Premier League positional rivals and they must star as centrepieces of what could be a prosperous era.

Swiss star bid farewell to WSLEmbracing new challenge in ItalyHas already been among the goalsWHAT HAPPENED?

The Switzerland international is taking on a new challenge for 2024-25. After six years in England with West Ham, Everton and Aston Villa, the 25-year-old forward has spread her wings and bid farewell to the WSL – with the decision taken to head for Turin.

The Swiss has been doing that on and off the field at Juventus, with early goals helping to endear her to team-mates and supporters. Her first effort in the Italian top-flight was registered in a 6-3 win over Sassuolo, with Lehmann anticipating a poor back-pass and going on to lift the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Chelsea’s 8/10 "monster" outshone both Palmer & Nkunku

It might have all ended up a little more stressful than it needed to be, thanks to a momentary brain fade from Reece James, but Chelsea managed to hold on and pick up all three points against Brighton & Hove Albion last night.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are now undefeated in their last five Premier League games, winning the last four.

Moreover, thanks to Manchester United's win over Newcastle United last night, the Blues' chances of qualifying for the Europa League look much healthier than they did a couple of weeks ago.

The two goalscorers for the Pensioners, Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku, are, of course, getting plenty of plaudits, as they should, but there was another starter who was just as good on the South Coast.

Palmer and Nkunku's performance against Brighton

Both attackers were brilliant at the Amex, with the Englishman opening the scoring with a wonderfully placed looping header from a Marc Cucurella cross in the first half, while the Frenchman gave his side a much-needed buffer with his well-placed finish in the second half.

The pair impressed the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, who awarded them both 8/10s on the night, writing that the former Manchester City prospect was 'elegant, classy and impactful in everything he did' and that the former RB Leipzig ace 'breathed new life into Chelsea's attack' when on the pitch.

It might sound over the top, but the pair's statistics from the match back up the journalist's opinion. For example, in Palmer's 89 minutes of action, he registered a combined expected goals and assists figure of 0.82, scored, took 46 touches, created one big chance, had two shots on target, and even made a clearance.

Whereas in just 48 minutes on the pitch, Nkunku registered an expected goal and assists figure of 0.36, took one shot on target, scored, played one key pass, made two tackles, and even blocked a shot from the Seagulls.

In all, it was a great display from both attackers, but there was another starter last night who should be getting just as much attention for his performance.

Trevoh Chalobah's performance against Brighton

Yes, the Blues ace who should be spoken about the same way as his goalscoring teammates today is centre-back Trevoh Chalobah.

The Cobham graduate might not have got on the scoresheet himself or even provided an assist like his full-back comrades, but his contribution at the back was invaluable and became especially so following Reece James' red card in the 88th minute.

Kinsella was undoubtedly impressed with the 6 foot 4 titan as he also gave him an 8/10 on the night, praising him for the countless 'incredible blocks and defensive interventions' he 'kept making' for the team.

The journalist's appraisal of the 24-year-old's performance is not hyperbolic either. In his 100 minutes of action, the "ice cold" centre-back, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, made nine clearances, blocked one shot, made four tackles, including a last-man tackle, won five out of six duels, maintained a passing accuracy of 92%, and even completed 100% of his dribbles.

Ultimately, it was a truly titanic effort from the "monster" defender, as Kulig called him, and while he got the same match rating as Palmer and Nkunku, it probably should have been higher, as there wasn't a single thing wrong with his performance.

Arteta must start Arsenal star after 8/10 Goodison display

Winning the Premier League title would be nice, but in some ways, it would only rubber stamp success onto an incredible Arsenal side that Mikel Arteta has built over a number of years.

They say that Rome wasn't built in a day and this is especially true of the slow but steady climb in north London since Arteta dipped his toes into senior management after earning his stripes at Pep Guardiola's Manchester City machine.

Sure, Arsenal won the FA Cup before Arteta had even enjoyed a full campaign at the helm but the Gunners have crafted their sublime squad brick by red brick, Arteta now going punch for punch with his mentor in successive seasons.

Winning at the Emirates Stadium against Everton today would put this Arsenal squadron just one point behind the immortal 'Invincibles'. It may not be enough to pip Manchester City, but victory is the only way to capitalise on a slip-up.

Arsenal team news

Talismanic right winger Bukayo Saka will be monitored ahead of the campaign's culminating fixture, having been forced off during last weekend's victory at Old Trafford after slamming into an advertising board.

That blemish aside, Arteta has a fully fit team to pick from, with Jurrien Timber possibly ready to feature in the matchday squad after spending most of his first season in England sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber

Arteta doesn't tend to ring the changes with any regularity but he might consider replacing Takehiro Tomiyasu with Oleksandr Zinchenko to give his team the best chance of securing three points and pushing for the Premier League title.

Why Arsenal must unleash Oleksandr Zinchenko

Arsenal signed Zinchenko from Manchester City in a £30m deal in July 2022, with the versatile Ukrainian since featuring 67 times, scoring two goals and supplying four assists.

After starring during his maiden year, he's endured a more frustrating season and has been limited to just 20 starts in the Premier League due to injuries and the good form of Jakub Kiwior and Tomiyasu.

The latter has started the past four games but was handed a 6/10 match rating by football.london's Kaya Kaynak, who noted his lapses in concentration but tipped his hat to his tussle with the electric Amad Diallo.

But against Everton, Arsenal need control and balance, dictating the flow against a Toffees side that will be lacking the pace of the injured Jack Harrison on the right. Zinchenko, in this regard, could flourish, completing 89% of his passes and winning 61% of his duels in the top flight this term, as per Sofascore.
