  • WHAT KIERAN MCKENNA SAID

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna disclosed some of the details of Tuanzebe's injury over the weekend. The Premier League newcomers were without the defender during their recent 4-1 defeat to West Ham United as he was advised to rest after the surgery on his hand.

"He's done a hand injury, a very unfortunate accident," McKenna explained.

"He's had surgery and will be out for a while. It's not going to be a couple of weeks, probably longer. There are still discussions with the specialists. He's naturally a miss with the way he's started the season. He's going to be out for a little while."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since Ipswich's promotion to the Premier League, Tuanzebe has been a crucial part of their defence, starting in all six of the team's matches before this accident sidelined him. His strong performances made him a standout player, and his absence is undoubtedly a significant loss for the team. However, the two-week international break gives him valuable time to recover and miss fewer games.

New Cricket Victoria chairman backs Earl Eddings for second Cricket Australia term

David Maddocks believes it is important for stability as the game battles the Covid-19 pandemic

Daniel Brettig22-Oct-2020David Maddocks, the new Cricket Victoria chair, has declared that on his first impression there is a strong case for the Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings to be granted a second term when his current three-year stint expires next year, arguing that the game requires “stability in a period of great instability”, underlined by uncertainty about India’s port of arrival for this summer’s tour.A lawyer and governance expert, Maddocks cut his administrative teeth at the North Melbourne Cricket Club before it merged to form the Greenvale Kangaroos and as such has known Eddings, who is also a former president of North Melbourne, for decades. In a rocky year for CA, which has seen its chief executive Kevin Roberts moved on amid issues around Covid-19 and disputes with the states, the players association and most recently the free-to-air broadcaster Channel Seven, Maddocks argued that CA should consider the need for continuity when so much was changing around the game.”You often hear it said that board members by the time their period is about to expire, they’re really at their best, they’ve been around, they understand the issues, they understand the interrelationships and all those sorts of things,” Maddocks said. “I think at the moment in terms of CV and CA, there is a strong case for stability in a period of great instability. There are a number of issues CA’s dealing with, the upcoming Test series and so on. My personal view is I think Earl is doing a very good job and I think if there was potential for him to stay on, I think it’s something that ought to be considered.ALSO READ: Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings gains ally from Victoria board change”Do I agree with where CA is going and its vision? Yes, I do. In terms of my relationship with Earl, I know Earl very well through cricket circles going back a long time. But I understand my duty entirely as CV chair is I’ve got to exercise my own judgment on issues in the best interests of cricket in Victoria. I know Earl well enough, and I think this is a good thing, to tell him if I have concerns or what CV’s interests might be if there’s something that’s not consistent with where CA are heading.”Eddings’ predecessor David Peever attempted to continue for a second term and was re-elected as such at the CA AGM in late 2018, before the release of a cultural review following the Newlands scandal saw his resignation forced when New South Wales and its chairman John Knox withdrew support a matter of days later. Both Knox and the Queensland chairman Chris Simpson raised governance concerns at the AGMs of their respective states earlier this year, but Maddocks is of the view that structural change to the CA board – to have the direct representation of states on the board rather than state nominated independent directors – is not a path cricket should return to.”As I understand it, the fundamental concern about this old style is that decisions could be dominated more by self-interest and perhaps controlled by the larger, more powerful states, whereas decisions need to be made by CA for the best interests of cricket throughout Australia,” Maddocks said. “No problem with the dialogue, no problem with the discussion, but my personal view is the structure as it presently stands is overall a more appropriate style than that old school style”One positive side of it would be if the states understand more what’s happening, and the difficulties or issues that CA are confronting, we all might be able to contribute in a positive way to working towards solutions. The states shouldn’t just sit back and wait to be told what to do, and I don’t believe we are. I think under Earl there’s been very good communication to the states and there’s nothing to stop states from raising issues and getting more information from CA.Nevertheless, Maddocks emphasised the need for strong communication between boards, and saw no reason why CA directors should not be welcome at every CV board meeting, citing the example of Mel Jones who was Victoria’s nominee to the CA board in late 2019.”The first delegates meeting I chaired was last Monday and Mel attended, and Earl attended,” he said. “My understanding from talking to Mel is that she’s keen to attend every delegates meeting that takes place in Victoria, but also to be involved in the CV board meetings as well. Earl has also said that he is available at any time. That’s one thing I’ll be very much taking advantage of.”I accept there has been comment previously that there’s a feeling with that board-nominated person we could have more communication from them, and we will. When they are independently appointed, they’re there to make decisions in the best interest of cricket in Australia, but I don’t see how that in any way precludes them from coming back and attending any meetings to keep Cricket Victoria informed and that’s exactly what I’ll be encouraging.”Maddocks accepted, too, that there had been a high degree of criticism about CV’s cuts to community cricket earlier this year, and also acknowledged that one of his key tasks was to ensure unity across the state. “What I’d like to encourage is that we work together constructively,” he said. “A good example recently was that we’ve got a proper process for people to raise issues and vote directors in and out. We have elections, there’s always a potential for change. So, I’d really want to encourage a sense of working together and looking at solutions.”

Aston Villa could now sign "intelligent" Juventus ace as part of Luiz deal

Aston Villa have been hit with another twist in their plot to sell Douglas Luiz for players and cash this summer, it has been revealed.

Villans trying to avoid Financial Fair Play issues

After finishing fourth in the Premier League and clinching Champions League football for the first time in their history, Unai Emery's are looking to strengthen their ranks but are facing financial fair play pressures after declaring losses of £120m last year.

To get around this, it appears that the club are engineering a trio of swap deals that will be swaps in all but name. Firstly, they are negotiating with Everton over a deal for young winger Lewis Dobbin, in a move that sees Everton simultaneously negotiating a move for Tim Iroegbunam, who is set to undergo a medical at Goodison Park on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Villa have also agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign defender Ian Maatsen, in a move that will set them back up to £40m with add-ons included. In the other direction, Chelsea are set to sign either Jhon Duran or a Villa academy talent, allowing both sides to balance the books in a legal fashion, with the pair and Everton all among those under financial fair play pressure.

But by far the biggest swap deal being discussed is that for Douglas Luiz to move to Juventus, which will see Aston Villa receive around 20m euros and two Juventus players in return for their star midfielder. Samuel Iling-Junior is certain to be one of those, but there were concerns after Weston McKennie refused to be a part of the move, leaving the transfer in doubt. Now, an alternative has been found.

Villa close to signing young midfielder

That comes as the Villans have identified Juventus youngster Enzo Barrenechea as the replacement for McKennie in any deal for Luiz, according to Fabrizio Romano. The young Argentine has spent the most recent season on loan with fellow Serie A side Fronsinone, but could not prevent them from being relegated on the final day of the Italian top flight season.

The 23-year-old was dubbed "one of the most intelligent midfield prospects in Italian football" with "so much composure" by analyst Ben Mattison on X, but he will now join Unai Emery's side if all goes to plan despite still having two years left to run on his £4,000 a week deal in Turin.

For his part, Barrenechea is understood to be "keen" on a move to the Premier League and "open" to joining Aston Villa, where he will be offered the chance to play Champions League football for the first time in his career.

Though the move would certainly be an odd one, with Villa swapping one arguably world class star for two young talents, should Barrenechea be able to deliver on the promise shown at Frosinone, he could be an astute arrival.

Grealish's omission was a significant talking point prior to the tournament, with many fans and pundits expressing surprise over Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave out the playmaker. The Manchester City star has now admitted that his form at club during the 2023/24 season wasn’t up to his usual standards. However, he argued that a team requires balance in every position and believed his experience and achievements warranted his inclusion in the squad.

"I'll be honest with you – I didn't really agree with it,” Grealish said of Southgate's decision during an interview with

"You need a bit of a balance in every position on the pitch and I class myself [as] quite an experienced player now. I have won a lot of stuff now so, you asked me should I have gone, yes, I still think I should have, but obviously it wasn't meant to be."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since the conclusion of Euro 2024, Grealish has been given a second chance to prove himself on the international stage under the leadership of interim manager Lee Carsley. Grealish repaid the trust by scoring in a 2-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland.

When asked if he had a point to prove upon his return, Grealish said: "Of course, I wanted to come here and train well and play well. I thank the manager Lee Carsley for giving me that chance and having that trust in me. It obviously really meant a lot, I think throughout my career when I have played under managers who have shown trust in me and communicated with me the way he has the last two camps, it really helps me. It makes me feel that the manager really does rate me and I can't speak highly enough of him since I have been here."

Ireland hand full-time contracts to Curtis Campher, Josh Little, David Delany

Curtis Campher, Josh Little and David Delany have been awarded their first full-time senior contracts by Cricket Ireland. They are among a batch of 18 centrally contracted players for 2021, with a further two on retainer deals.Campher, a former South Africa U-19 allrounder, impressed on debut in the summer, scoring back-to-back half-centuries and taking five wickets in three ODIs against England. Little played twice in the series, picking up five wickets, while Delany has featured eight times in T20Is since his debut in 2019.Those to miss out on contracts from the 2020 group were Boyd Rankin, Tyrone Kane and Stuart Thompson – all of whom played in Ireland’s maiden Test in 2018 – while George Dockrell and Shane Getkate were switched on to retainers. Seamer Peter Chase has returned to the full-time list.Cricket Ireland announced earlier this week a change to the contractual period, with new deals running from March 2021 until February 2022, instead of in line with the calendar year. Those players retaining contracts will have their current deal extended from December 31 up until the end of February.”Two years ago the selectors embarked on a long-term strategy that aimed to identify and mould a squad of players with the right blend of skill sets that will allow us to compete on multiple fronts and in varying conditions around the world,” Andrew White, chairman of national men’s selectors, said.”A key part of this was a strategic approach to succession planning, and 2021 will see a further step in this process. We believe this selection reflects the successful implementation of that strategy – perhaps best demonstrated by the number of players under the age of 25 in our recent victory against England.”The selectors have been extremely pleased with the successful start to Curtis Campher’s Irish career, and the positive progress displayed by two exciting young talented pacemen in Josh Little and David Delany – it’s exciting for fans to see these three young players in the green, and it creates a sense of anticipation as to the potential impact they may have on the international stage.”We have also been delighted by the hard work and commitment shown by Peter Chase in improving his game – when he lost his full-time contract last year, Peter went away and worked on his action and approach to his craft, and we hope that he will once again be showing his skills at the highest levels.”Richard Holdsworth, Cricket Ireland’s high performance director, said that the decision had been taken to only offer 18 full-time contracts – as opposed to 19 in 2020 – in order to add more players on retainers. He added that “despite the uncertainty that hangs around world cricket due to the pandemic”, Ireland hoped to contest a full international programme in 2021, culminating in a trip to India for the T20 World Cup.”The limited performances in 2020 showed remarkable progress,” Holdsworth said. “Despite dealing with the obvious challenges, we can look back with great pride at wins over the West Indies in the Caribbean, England in England, and Afghanistan in subcontinent conditions. However, the result is only half the story – that many young players stepped up and began to perform on the highest stage was probably just as pleasing.”Graham Ford, Andrew Balbirnie and the selectors should be proud of the way they are moulding a competitive and confident squad. Fingers crossed for a big 2021 with many more great performances.”Full-time contracts: Mark Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Peter Chase, David Delany, Gareth Delany, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Kevin O’Brien, William Porterfield, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Gary Wilson, Craig YoungRetainers: George Dockrell, Shane Getkate

India and Australia look to test bench strength in high-scoring Canberra

Big picture

After two near-identical Australia wins in Sydney, the ODI series shifts to Canberra, but the change in scene may not necessarily bring about a change in template. If the SCG was all about bat first, bat big and win, the Manuka Oval’s ODI history is pretty much just that, on steroids. The last seven games here have all been won by the side batting first, six of them while defending 320-plus totals. The last four first-innings totals here, in chronological order, are 372 for 2, 411 for 4, 348 for 8, and 378 for 5.For all the talk about India’s team balance and the lack of penetration in their bowling, their failure to win the toss so far has also contributed to their results. But even if the coin continues to work against them in Canberra, there is a chance for a little more parity between the sides with David Warner and Pat Cummins missing.Having already wrapped up the series, Australia may have pondered changes anyway. India might make a few too, not least with an eye on managing the workloads of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami ahead of the Test series. An opportunity could open up, therefore, for someone to step in and make a statement. India have now lost five ODIs in a row – their last such sequence, back in January 2016, also featured a string of toothless bowling displays in Australia. That sequence ended with a win in their final ODI of that tour, which featured an eye-catching display from a surprise ODI debutant by the name of Bumrah.

In the spotlight

Sean Abbott came back into Australia’s squad thanks to his red-hot form in the Sheffield Shield – 14 wickets in three matches at 17.92, and 261 runs at 130.50 including a maiden first-class hundred. Can he carry that form over into white-ball cricket?Virat Kohli with his pace bowling group – Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya•Getty Images

He made bright starts in the first two ODIs but failed to kick on, and that can’t keep happening, especially on flat pitches like these, if Mayank Agarwal wants a long run in India’s ODI side. Currently, he has a strike rate of 103.61 from five ODIs, but a highest score of only 32. This could be his last opportunity in a while to show he can play bigger innings.

Team news

With Warner out, Australia could either swap in D’Arcy Short or Matthew Wade at the top of the order, or push Marnus Labuschagne up the order – he’s volunteered for the role – and hand Cameron Green an ODI debut. Judging by Aaron Finch’s pre-match words, the former option seems likelier. Sean Abbott, who has been in terrific form with ball and bat in the Sheffield Shield, looks set to replace Cummins and play his first ODI since 2014.Australia (possible): 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Matthew Wade/D’Arcy Short, 3 Steven Smith, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Moises Henriques, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Sean Abbott, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood.India could hand some of their fringe players a chance with the series already lost, but predicting their XI is never an easy task. Of those who haven’t featured yet, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur seem likeliest to get a game.India (possible): 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 Shikhar Dhawan/Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Shreyas Iyer/Manish Pandey/Sanju Samson, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Shardul Thakur/Navdeep Saini, 9 & 10 two from Mohammed Shami/Jasprit Bumrah/T Natarajan, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal/Kuldeep Yadav

Pitch and conditions

The Manuka Oval has one of the flattest batting tracks in Australia, historically, as well as some of the longest boundaries. A warm day is forecast with a high of around 26 degrees Celsius.

Stats and trivia

  • Of all grounds to have hosted at least five ODIs in this century, the Manuka Oval has been the fastest-scoring, with an average ODI run rate of 6.36.
  • India won’t have happy memories from their last ODI in Canberra. They were 277 for 1 courtesy centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, and needed 72 from 75 to win. But Dhawan’s wicket triggered an incredible collapse, the last nine wickets falling for 46 runs as Kane Richardson ran amok.
  • Kohli needs 23 runs to get to the 12,000 mark in ODIs. If he gets there on Wednesday, he will have reached the landmark in 242 innings. Sachin Tendulkar, the previous quickest to the mark, got there in 300 innings.
  • Mohammed Shami is two wickets away from 150 in ODIs.

Quotes

“The wicket is so true that it’s got nice pace and bounce in it. And once you get in, you can really cash in. It’s a beautiful outfield. It’s a big ground, so you probably get more value for your shots through the gap. You pick up twos and threes more often than what you do on some smaller grounds. You can start to accumulate quick runs there. On the flip side, if you bowl well early with that extra pace and bounce on the wicket, you can do some damage. Both teams will obviously be looking to use that new ball really well.”
